Phenakistiscope

The phenakistiscope was the first widespread animation device that created a fluent illusion of motion. A series of pictures showing sequential phases of the animation are seen through small slots spaced evenly around the rim of a disc. The user would spin the disc and look through the moving slits at the images reflected in a mirror, seeing a rapid succession of images that appear to be a single moving picture. This animation shows one such phenakistiscope disc, entitled Running rats, created by Thomas Mann Baynes in 1833.

Common house gecko

The common house gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus) is a species of lizard native to southern and southeastern Asia. The undersides of this mating pair are viewed through the glass of a window. The male has inserted one of his two intromittent organs, the hemipenis, into the cloaca of the female. The adhesive lamellae with setae on the underside of the feet adhere to the glass and allow the reptiles to maintain traction on the smooth surface.

Oecophylla smaragdina is a species of arboreal weaver ant found in tropical Asia and Australia. It forms colonies with multiple nests in trees, each nest being made of leaves stitched together using the silk produced by the ant larvae. The species is organized into three castes: workers, major workers, and queens. Workers are 5 to 6 millimetres (0.20 to 0.24 in) long; they look after larvae and farm scale insects for honeydew. Major workers are 8 to 10 millimetres (0.3 to 0.4 in) long, with long strong legs and large mandibles. They forage, assemble and expand the nest. Both types of workers are orange in color. Queens are typically 20 to 25 millimetres (0.8 to 1.0 in) long, and normally greenish-brown, giving the species its name smaragdina (Latin for 'emerald'). This video depicts an army of O. smaragdina worker ants carrying a dead gecko in Laos.

Plexippus petersi

Plexippus petersi is a species of jumping spider native to Asia and has been introduced to Africa and the Pacific Islands. The male is between 6 and 10 millimetres (0.24 and 0.39 in) in length, and the female around 10 millimetres (0.39 in). Plexippus petersi is a house spider, living indoors, and is noted for the skilful way it hunts and catches mosquitoes, flies and other invertebrates. It has also been found living in crops in the Philippines, in one instance in a rice field infested with the armyworm Spodoptera mauritia, and in another, in a corn field attacked by the northern armyworm Mythimna separata. This focus-stacked photograph depicts a P. petersi spider, approximately 7 millimetres (0.28 in) in length, on a human finger.

It is considered to be the most widespread dragonfly with a good population on every continent except Antarctica, although it is rare in Europe. Globe skimmers make an annual multigenerational journey of some 18,000 km (about 11,200 miles); to complete the migration, individual globe skimmers fly more than 6,000 km (3,730 miles)—one of the farthest known migrations of all insect species.

Xylotrupes socrates

Xylotrupes socrates, the Siamese rhinoceros beetle or fighting beetle, is a species of large scarab beetle belonging to the subfamily Dynastinae. It is particularly known for its role in insect fighting in Thailand, where they are captured and trained by their owners to become stronger and more aggressive, with the beetle that lifts its opponent up by its horns winning. An insect may also win if its opponent crawls away, falls or is overturned. This photograph of a male X. socrates beetle on a banana leaf was focus-stacked from 23 images.

Euthalia aconthea, also known as the common baron, is a medium-sized species of butterfly in the family Nymphalidae native to south and south-east Asia. In 1905, Charles Thomas Bingham recorded it to be found throughout peninsular India, except in the desert tracts, and the higher ranges of the Himalayas; Assam; Burma; Tenasserim, extending to the peninsula, and Sumatra. This E. aconthea caterpillar was photographed on Don Det, an island in the Mekong, and part of Si Phan Don, an archipelago in southern Laos.

Ambigram

An ambigram is a calligraphic or typographic design with multiple interpretations as written words. Alternative meanings are often yielded when the design is transformed or the observer moves, but they can also result from a shift in mental perspective. This animation shows a half-turn ambigram of the word ambigram. The word is written calligraphically with 180-degree rotational symmetry, such that it reads identically when viewed upside down.

Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is a town in Vientiane province of Laos, lying on the Nam Song River. It is surrounded by karst topography. The town was first settled around 1353 as a staging post between Luang Prabang and the Laotian capital, Vientiane. Originally named Mouang Song after the body of the deceased King Phra Nha Phao of Phai Naam was seen floating down the river, the town was renamed Vang Vieng during French colonial rule in the 1890s. During the Vietnam War, the United States military constructed an air-force base and runway in Vang Vieng, known as "Lima site 6". Since Laos opened up for tourism in the late 1990s, the town has grown substantially due to the influx of backpacker tourism and associated business development. This view of the town and surrounding karst was taken from the top of Mount Nam Xay in June, during the monsoon season.

Argiope versicolor

Argiope versicolor also known as the multi-coloured Saint Andrew's cross spider, is a species of orb-weaver spider found mostly in Southeast Asia, from China to Indonesia. Like other members of the genus, females sometimes decorate their web with a zig-zag stabilimentum of white silk, which varies in shape from discoid in juveniles to cruciform in mature females. The stabilimentum may be associated with predator-avoidance behaviours. The female usually sits head down in the centre of the web, with legs held spread-eagle in an "X" shape. The male is smaller and duller than the female, is brown- and cream-coloured, and its web not decorated by zig-zag white bands. This A. versicolor female was photographed on the island of Don Det in Laos.

Apollo 15

Apollo 15 (July 26 – August 7, 1971) was the fourth crewed mission to land on the Moon. It was the first J mission, with a longer stay on the Moon and a greater focus on science, including the first Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV). David Scott and James Irwin landed near Hadley Rille and spent 18+12 hours on extravehicular activity (EVA), collecting 170 pounds (77 kg) of surface material. At the same time, Alfred Worden orbited the Moon, operating the sensors in the SIM bay of the service module. During the return trip, Worden performed the first spacewalk in deep space. The Apollo 15 mission splashed down safely, with all goals accomplished, but was marred when it emerged that the crew had carried unauthorized postal covers to the lunar surface, some of which were sold by a West German stamp dealer. The crew was reprimanded for poor judgment, and did not fly in space again. The mission also saw the collection of the Genesis Rock, thought to be part of the Moon's early crust, and Scott used a hammer and a feather to demonstrate Galileo's theory that absent air resistance, objects fall at the same rate regardless of mass. This photograph, taken by Scott during an EVA on August 2, shows Irwin giving a military salute beside the U.S. flag. The lunar module "Falcon" is in the center, with the LRV on the right.

Torii path with a lantern at Fushimi Inari-taisha

Fushimi Inari-taisha is the main Shinto shrine of the Japanese deity Inari Ōkami, located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto. It sits at the base of a mountain, also named Inari, located 233 metres (764 ft) above sea level. The site's earliest structures were built in 711 on the Inariyama hill in southwestern Kyoto, but the shrine was re-located in 816 on the request of the monk Kūkai. It gained imperial patronage during the early Heian period and the main shrine structure was built in 1499. This photograph shows a torii path at Fushimi Inari-taisha with a hanging lantern. Each of the shrine's roughly 10,000 torii (gates) was donated by a Japanese business, and approximately 800 of these are set up in rows, as depicted here, that give the impression of entering a tunnel.
