It's not quite true that nothing gets by. We try, but vandalism, nonsense edits, and just plain wrong info gets in all the time. Your teacher's actually right. A lot of us try to keep an eye on articles (for some reason, people are always trying to add false information to Charles Dickens so I keep a watch on that one). Wikipedia may be a good first step in researching, to find pointers to other places to look, but don't rely on everything here being gospel. Confirm everything from other sources.
