What is Around the World?

It's a collaboration!

A collaboration using advanced wiki-tools!

If everything goes according to plan, it will begin on July 15th.

The event is being co-sponsored by Wikiproject Lists of basic topics and WikiProject Geography, and participants will be "traveling" all around "the World" visiting each country online (here on Wikipedia and perhaps beyond) as they apply advanced wiki-tools to improve pieces of the profiles of each and every country on Earth!. Each pass through these pages is a "trip around the World..."

The set of pages we are working on is currently located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics.

Each page presents essential information on each country in a topic outline format, for ease of overviewing and navigating. Most of the topics presented are linkified, which turns these pages into a hypertextual map to material about each country on Wikipedia. When completed, they shall all become part of Wikipedia's contents system.

The pages share a standard format, with the information on each country presented in the same general order. So rather than getting stuck on a single country trying to complete it, each participant works on all 200+ political entities, completing a single data item or detail across all of the pages!

For this they use advanced tools like WP:AWB, Linky, etc. It goes fast, and since others are doing this at the same time, it makes "the World" feel like a beehive, and the participants are its bees.  :) The energy is contagious.

And since you are moving from country to country, the tasks make it feel like you are traveling around the world, and you get to learn a little about every country as you do so. This approach also allows for greater efficiency, because by the time you've done 30 or so of a particular item, you've figured out how to finish it faster and more effectively (such as where to find the data or how to make adjustments), and this specialization speeds up development - but more importantly it reduces errors.

The tasks are varied, which adds even more variety to the project. Some tasks are look-ups-and-fill-ins, some are copy and paste, some are image hunts, some are maintenance adjustments, some are link fixing, some are blue-linking (creating an underlying redirect so a link turns blue), some are fact checking, etc.

During the collaboration, co-coordinators will be standing by, to lend a helping hand to participants, provide instruction and tips on how to use the tools, and help them find what they are looking for. Co-coordinators will also be using advanced tools to inspect the work of participants, and touch it up as needed, or if a task was done wrong throughout, point this out to the participant so he or she can make the necessary corrections.

Co-coordinators are working on the set of pages right now, to familiarize themselves with "the World" so they can help more effectively by the time the main event starts. But there's still lots of preparation left to be done, and we are looking for editors experienced in advanced wikitools who would like to become co-coordinators.

Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser for mac?

Do you know of any tool that could be used as an alternative for the Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser tool for mac users? The page says it can only be used for Windows operating systems, however, I am running Mac OS X v10.5 "Leopard".

I know of a make-shift alternative, which is (much) better for some things, but lacks some of AWB's functionality. You'll need 3 things: Firefox, Linky, and WP:WikEd.

While AWB is a page autoloader (loading the next page in the queue after you are done with the current one), the Linky extension for Firefox is a page preloader (loading all of the pages into Firefox before you start). Firefox's tab capabilities combined with the preloading power of Linky is a powerful combination. You use Linky by selecting an area on the page with some links in it, and right click. Choose Linky from the drop-down menu that appears, and click on "Open selected links in tabs". Linky will load all of the pages (that those links lead to) into tabs. A tab is a window managed from inside Firefox. Linky will load up to 99 pages into tabs in Firefox. In Firefox, to switch from tab to tab press Ctrl-tab. The real power is in Ctrl-W, which almost instantly closes the current tab and takes you to the next tab. (Well that's how these work under MS Windows - you may need to read the documentation for Firefox and Linky to see if their instructions differ for the Mac).

Anyhow, this pair allows you to inspect lots of pages fast. And it speeds up working on multiple pages too: if you edit and save a page and want to move on to the next one, there is no server delay because all of the pages are preloaded. Just press Ctrl-W, and blam! the page is gone and you are looking immediately at the page in the next tab.

In my opinion, the nicest feature of AWB is its search/replace feature. Well, there is a wiki-editor called WikEd which you can install as a script to your Wikipedia user account. It replaces Wikipedia's edit window, and has a search/replace feature built-in. One really cool capability of its search/replace feature is that it can work on selected (that is, highlighted) areas of the page. You aren't forced to search/replace the whole document, or to cycle through all the finds to skip them (but it has a skip feature too).

A page I wrote which you may find very useful is Wikipedia:Tools/Optimum tool set. To load some powerful scripts, including WikEd, see it's first section: Wikipedia:Tools/Optimum tool set#Super fast upgrade.

Together, the above 3 tools (Firefox, Linky, and WikEd) can make up for not having AWB. This combo isn't as good for some things, and is better for others. On tasks where you need to see what you are doing on the pages you are working on, the combo wins out hands down. There is no initial view in AWB, and previewing edits is slow and tedious, and cramped into a small viewing area. The combo is also superior if you need to manually edit a number of pages.

I rely heavily on the combo, and use it even more than I use AWB. The combo turns Firefox into a super powerful browser/wiki-editor.

I hope you find my comments and suggestions useful.

P.S.: you can turbo-boost the combo mentioned above and meet or exceed the power of AWB for search/replace if you have a good keyboard macro program. With macros, you could close tabs and do search replace in WikEd in the next tab automatically, with just the press of a key. Auto-repeating macros are possible, but those are considered bots and need approval at WP:BOT. Don't use auto-repeating (looped) macros on Wikipedia (but they come in very handy in applications like spreadsheets, wordprocessors, and databases, and the best macro programs can operate across windows and in multiple programs). Pressing the macro key once for each operation is fast enough, and this keeps you in the loop. As a bonus, you can use macros to automate just about any repetitive thing you do manually on your computer. And there's lots of tasks like that on Wikipedia. Definitely a tool for power-users. The only thing more powerful is programming. There's a section on macros at Wikipedia:Tools/Optimum tool set. -TT

I've always felt that the best possible outcome would be for the nominator to improve the article himself and not post an AfD in the first place - deletion discussions for category-duplicating lists are unnecessary overhead that would be prevented by simply rolling up your shirt sleaves and working on the pages. WP:ALSO

Hi. Per WP:ALSO, please reconsider adding a "see also" link to List of online encyclopedias to all articles on that list. That's not really a link related to the topic, and it will not be useful to most readers. Consider, e.g.: would it be useful to add "see also" links to List of countries, List of federal republics, List of nuclear powers, List of members to the U.N. Security Council etc. to the article United States? That an article belongs to a group of subjects on which we have a list is better conveyed by a link in the body text of the article, if at all.  Sandstein  07:24, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Setting Wikipedia time to your time zone

Wikipedia's servers record activity based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC for short). You can set your user preferences to display time for the time zone you are in.

If you do this, Wikipedia will show all times in Recent changes, page histories, and contribution histories based on your local time zone. However, when you sign a talk page with ~~~~, the timestamp is created in text, so it has to be displayed in UTC. Automated logs such as image file uploads are also shown in server time (UTC).

To show other users what time zone you are in, you could even add a time userbox to your own user page.

The reception section isn't expansive enough, the prose needs work throughout the article, and the structure would need to be changed (something I would look into finishing a good topic on the characters). I was mulling on the thought of bringing Naruto Uzumaki or Sasuke Uchiha to FAC after they were extensively cleaned up and expanded, but Rock Lee is not as key a character and doesn't have the same degree of coverage. — sephiroth bcr ^(converse) 00:05, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

I appreciate that you are acting in good faith, but principle contributors must be consulted before a nomination, as required in the featured article candidate instructions. It is best if featured articles are nominated by people who have worked closely on them. National Cancer Survivors Day

Hiya, I noticed that added a reference for Antigua and Barbuda (great!) and reverted my edits to the international section (we disagree). I did some googling before I made the change, and couldn't see any evidence of celebrations outside the US, although I missed the Antigua event. Can you find RSs for any other country listed? I'm sure it's a worthy cause, but we have standards, and the very name "National..." hints that it's primarily for people in the US. Matt's talk 13:49, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for doing some more work, it's been a very positive discussion, but we still need a little more work. The CDC article is a cut-and-paste from the NCSDF website. The home page of the Putnam County News and Recorder explicitly states it is "Providing local news, information and opinions from Philipstown and Putnam Valley, NY". These are not reliable sources, so we have evidence of one event each for Antigua and Canada. After twenty years, with major sponsors behind it, that's not much. A suggestion: change the lead and infobox to refer only to the US, and replace participating countries section with a para indicating that NCDSF wishes to promote the event abroad (sourced to their website), and has had limited success in those two countries. Re: Curious

Red really does have a lot to do with it. My signature is naturally formatted, I can find my (red) edits in a page's history easier, and as an added bonus I get to bitch at people that treat my edits like those of a new user or a vandal. That, and there's not a lot I'd put on a user page that wouldn't be obvious from looking through my contributions. I occasionally toss around the idea of making a "secret" user page at something like User:Snapper2/I pity the fools that find this, but Wikipedia keeps making it easier to track down such things. ~SnapperTo 23:44, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes, though I marked as many pages as I could "patrolled", there were some pages where I did not feel I knew enough about the subjects to mark them one way or the other. Status report on the Country outlines (Around the World) project

Penubag has been hard at work developing awards for this project. He has completed a very professional looking medal, and is almost done with a trophy that is truly awesome - both of these awards are visually stunning.

I and a few others have been working steadily on the country outlines - one for every country of the world! They're shaping up nicely. So far, 28 of them have been moved to article space - these aren't complete, but they are complete enough to be made available for readers to benefit from them. The rest of the set still includes temporary data that was generated by template (because it matched most but not all of the countries), and before the lists can be moved to article space, all the temporary data needs to be checked for accuracy, and if incorrect it needs to be replaced with correct information.

The effort on the lists has been on 3 fronts:

1. Working on the lists in article space to complete them so they will be good examples for editors working on the rest of the set.
2. Adding or correcting other data (fixing redlinks, filling in blanks, etc.). The main type of work participants in "the contest" will be doing. The reason we're doing this is to get a feel for it, to develop the fastest methods for each type of task, etc.
3. Improving the overall design and implenting changes on all 247 pages, whether in article space or not.

There has been some opposition to us running the contest based on edit counts or iterations. The concern is that we should reward quality work and not quantity, for fear of crappy edits done quickly without thought. I pointed out that the collection of pages are drafts in the Wikipedia namespace (therefore posing no danger to article space) and that most of the work needs to be done with power tools like AWB and Linky (which are specifically designed for repetitive work), but the reply was that we shouldn't set the precedent of rewarding barnstars for numerically-based tasks, and implied the threat of continuously MfD'ing the contest if we attempted to do so (like they did with the Awards Center - I was very surprised and disappointed that participants didn't step up to defend it). So we need to be careful in determining what exactly the awards will represent, and how they will be awarded.

Since rewarding iterations (passes with AWB on all of the pages in the set) are out, we really don't need the globe in stand anymore. Two awards should suffice.

Once we get started with the contest, I'd like to kick the whole thing off with a round of medals for those dedicated few who have worked hard on the project so far.

Humanism

Hello, I know this is not remotely related to Wikipedia, but I figured you could help me. I am currently doing a research paper on humanism, and as you say Humanism comprises your personal values, I was wondering if you could answer a few questions:

1. As a humanist, what does humanism mean to you?
2. Why do you find the philosophy attractive? and
3. Could you direct me to any good examples of Humanist literature?

I'm glad you asked. Note that "humanism" (h) means something different than "Humanism" (H). Uncapitalized, it refers to all humanistic philosophies (seculuar humanism, religious humanism, etc.). Capitalized, it refers to the life stance known as "Humanism". A life stance I have wholeheartedly adopted.

Humanism = getting along. Wars and conflict are the antithesis of Humanism, though this isn't to say that humanists are pacifists - you can't let tyrants run amuck. As a Humanist I reject supernatural sources of leadership, such as "Do this because God commands it", and I recognize that such commands actually come from the humans who are either pretending to pass along the commands from God (or some other mystical source), or who believe they are doing so. Spiritual leadership is manipulative, it's dishonest, and it gets people killed (by promoting rules such as "you'll be rewarded for eternity in heaven if you die in battle", etc.).

Humanism = world-wide perspective. We're in this together. Political borders and nationalism create unnecessary tensions (xenophobia, discrimination, etc.) and pit humans against humans, often in violent ways, and that's not good. We need to work together for the wellbeing of all. Transcending borders as world citizens and promoting world government are common themes in humanistic attitudes and polics.

Humanism = humanitarianism, applying our intelligence and resources to solving the problems of humanity, reaching out to others and reaching for our greatest potential, individually and collectively. It's a prescription for the Human Race to grow up.

That's what Humanism means to me, and that's also why it's attractive.

In studying humanism and Humanism, the very best place to start is with the 3 versions of the Humanist Manifesto (the original, and its 2 revisions). Then browse the material on Wikipedia about humanism, which you can find listed on the Topic outline of humanism. And then to see where it's all headed, read The Singularity Is Near by Ray Kurzweil, and you'll understand why I'm a transhumanist and a singularitarian. I believe it is blatantly shortsighted to stop at humanism (h). Transhumanism (h+) takes a hard look at the future and its implications for the Human Race - what the next step is in our evolution, whether or not it can be controlled humanely, and what will happen to us. Technology is advancing so far and so fast that it may soon outadvance us (all of us) - and that's not something that should be ignored or taken lightly, because it will likely change everything. EVERYTHING. On Wikipedia, you may find the Topic outline of transhumanism helpful in browsing that subject.

stupid cousin

I live with my cousin, and I use his computer(i.e. no e-mail, no chat, no lulz) I'm pushing the envelope as it is. and guess what? my cousin down loaded, like a gig of porn, and he blames me! can you belive it? Apparently, now my uncle(who is nice enough to let me live with him, because I'm cheap and can't afford a house yet, and am working a medium-high paying job.)is so TO'ed at me! I am totally am gonna get back at my cousin. any ideas? Sorry about my lag in thanking you for your help, I have been rather busy and away from my computer for a few days. I greatly appreciate your helpfulness with my research, it was very kind of you to help me out with this. In response to your question, I did find it helpful, as it gave me a place to begin in my research, and allowed me to build from there. I even quoted you in my research paper! In the end, I focused mostly on Renaissance humanism, as the report was for a Literature class, and humanism essentially created the Renaissance and, consequently, lead to most western literature, but your resources provided a great way to contrast how humanism has evolved and expanded into a modern worldview that continues to influence literature and its movements. Naruto reception

The new content recently added in reception is what it needs some flow. Some parts need a bit flow such as the fights to focus a bit more on Naruto.
