Hi! Saw your recent edit to this article and was wondering which country allowed women to stand earlier. This source does suggest that it was Australia. Are you thinking of the right to vote as opposed to the right to stand? Frickeg (talk) 08:00, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wasn't that more because the constitution of the US didn't specifically forbid women from standing, but it was kind of implied? I mean, they couldn't vote. I think it's still worth including in the Australian article with a note about the American situation. Frickeg (talk) 07:30, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well that's certainly not true. Women's suffrage and the right to stand were both granted in Australia in 1902; four women stood in the following election in 1903. Frickeg (talk) 21:06, 7 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I presume you are referring to Aboriginal women? Which I think is an unusual distinction to make. All Aboriginal people in certain states were refused suffrage and the right to stand, not just women. The source which states that Finland was the first country in the world to have "full gender equality" - I just can't see that, it's factually incorrect. Are we saying that men were not granted the right to vote until 1962? Even if we were to include qualifications by footnote, I think it's hard to dispute that Australia is noteworthy in this instance. Frickeg (talk) 05:04, 8 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't that shifting the goalposts? The article originally stated "Australia was the first country to allow women to stand in elections". It didn't say "all women" or "remove all restrictions". I submit that the original statement is factually correct and so should remain. Given that the previous sentence makes clear the exception regarding indigenous women, I still think the original sentence should stand. Frickeg (talk) 22:19, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Cheers.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
