H. E. A. Cotton[edit]

Sorry, my sources do not mention the years when H. E. A. Cotton was at Jesus College, Oxford. I would love to have The Times obituary, particularly if I can add something to the article from it. His book, Calcutta: Old and New, is extensively quoted or referred to by anybody writing on Calcutta. Regards. - P.K.Niyogi 02:20, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Amateur Achievement Award of Astronomical Society of the Pacific[edit]

The Amateur Achievement Award list has been promoted to Featured List. I would like to thank you for your support vote and for your valuable comment concerning its title. Jan.Kamenicek 20:45, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That is exactly what I was not sure. In a coherent text it is usually written that way, but the Society themselves omit it in a title, see e. g. the award's home page. So I decided to name the article in this way too. Jan.Kamenicek 07:20, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help / Adoption[edit]

Hi,

I'm hoping to make improvements to the Salford Quays article, but could do with some guidance as to how best to structure the content and avoid common pitfalls. Not a total wiki-newcomer, but definitely uncertain about the best ways to go about things!

Not even sure how you will respond to this message, so I guess I'll check my account and this page from time to time!

Cheers,

I've just noticed that you're a Welsh-speaker. I have asked a couple of other Welsh-speakers if they would help with this but they haven't replied. I wonder whether you could provide a note to explain how to pronounce the name Llŷr. It needn't be anything technical. In fact, I wonder how useful those very technical pronunciation guides are - how many people understand them? It would be nice to know what to call him. I guess it's something like chloo-er. Quaere re templates[edit]

Hello and thank you for your recent welcome when I joined the Law Project. Could you help me understand a couple of things regarding templates?

  • First, let's use the Law Project for an example, say I come across a page that obviously should be part of the project and is a stub. Should I tag it as a {{law-stub}} on the article page, tag it as Law Project article on the talk page and assess it as a stub, or both? Is there any harm in it being both? Will it get double reported if it is tagged in both places?
  • Further, do I understand correctly that if I should happen to create the stub, it would be fine to tag it as a {{law-stub}}, fine to add the Law Project Template to the talk page, but inappropriate to then give it any class rating or importance assessment? If someone else, or some group of editors of which I was only a minor contributor, later built the article up beyond stub class, would it be appropriate for me to assess it then or should I forever abstain as the article's creator?
  • Finally, when tagging a talk page, should one sign the tag? or is that sort of an exemption from the signing rule? Is it better to make a comment as to why one thinks the article is within the project or why one is assessing it a particular way? There have been a few articles I have run across that have no project tag, clearly belong within law, and have no comments at all. Upon tagging the article, I've added my signature after the tag, but later if a comment is made, it does look a little odd. In these cases, the tag itself didn't seem to require comment as it wasn't a borderline article.

Thanks.--Doug.(talk contribs) 20:38, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FL Main page proposal[edit]

You either nominated a WP:FLC or closed such a nomination recently. As such, you are the type of editor whose opinion I am soliciting. We now have over 400 featured lists and seem to be promoting in excess of 30 per month of late (41 in August and 42 in September). When Today's featured article (TFA) started (2004-02-22), they only had about 200 featured articles and were barely promoting 20 new ones per month. I think the quality of featured lists is at least as good as the quality of featured articles was when they started appearing on the main page. Thus, I am ready to open debate on a proposal to institute a List of the Day on the main page with nominations starting November 1 2007, voting starting December 1 2007 and main page appearances starting January 1 2008. For brevity, the proposal page does not discuss the details of eventual main page content, but since the work has already been done, you should consider this proposal assuming the eventual content will resemble the current content at the featured content page. Such output would probably start at the bottom of the main page. The proposal page does not debate whether starting with weekly list main page entries would be better than daily entries. However, I suspect persons in favor of weekly lists are really voicing opinions against lists on the main page since neither TFA nor Picture of the day started as weekly endeavors, to the best of my knowledge. See the List of the Day proposal and comment at WP:LOTDP and its talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/tcfkaWCDbwincowtchatlotpsoplrttaDCLaM) 19:46, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good. I don't know how many professors at the University are considered "notable" for Wikipedia, however, if it is a decently large amount, say 40+, then it may seem prudent, and perhaps useful to eventually delineate the categories into part-time, associate, emeritus, full-time, etc. --Emesee 04:06, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reply to an email that I was sent[edit]

I'd rather not reply to an email from someone I don't know, because I'd rather not have my secret identity revealed, so I'll reply here instead:

I sincerely apologize for taking your time, but I honestly don't know why I received a message saying I improperly edited or vandalized a page in February. I only signed up for an account 3 days ago, wishing to edit vandalism on pages related to The Berlin Wall. Such edits were "Jacobs [sic] cool" appearing before a section, and "Rick loves (insert name)" from a headline.
If you could help me determine how this edit, beyond my knowledge, could have happened, I would be glad to assist. As always, I am a man of honesty and integrity and I only wish to provide to and promote Wikipedia, as it is my first choice for information.
Thanks, [name removed]

I've looked through Berlin Wall and found the edit you referred to - you hadn't in fact signed up for an account, as the edits were made by someone at this anonymous IP address, which is registered to Comcast Cable Communications Inc (your ISP, I assume). What may well have happened is that the next time you have logged in, you've been given another IP address operated by your ISP, and so have seen messages on that talk page left for other editors who have also been allocated that IP address. As I have no way of knowing from your email what warning I left and where, I can't take it any further. If you didn't make the edits in question, then the message wasn't meant for you. Don't worry. I suggest that you sign up for an account if you have not already done so, to avoid being bothered by irrelevant messages for other users of your ISP. Feel free to pop back here and say hello if I can help further. BencherliteTalk 11:41, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Featured List of the Day Experiment[edit]

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. You may submit multiple lists for consideration.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 19:01, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Counties of Wales[edit]

Hello,

I came across some discourse between yourself and User:Owain. I'm a little alarmed by Owain's (continued) contributions to assert that the historic counties still exist with the former boundaries, which is in breach of the Wikipedia:Naming conventions (places).

He's a well known affliate and promoter of the Association of British Counties (that's no secret). He should no better than to be categorising articles according to former counties. It's a very old debate (about 3 years!) in which his ideas have continued to be been rejected by the editting community.

I just wanted to share the link to that convention as you may not have been aware of it. -- Jza84 · (talk) 13:16, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HPJoker/216.132.71.131 not vandalism?[edit]

Under the vandalism policy it states - "Modifying users' comments: Editing other users' comments to substantially change their meaning (e.g. turning someone's vote around), except when removing a personal attack (which is somewhat controversial in and of itself). Signifying that a comment is unsigned is an exception. Please also note that correcting other users' typos is discouraged. " Why is not removing other user's comments, when he/she has been warned, not good for AIV. What can I do properly that will help my case. Thanks. Socby19 (talk) 22:37, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I understand that overall it is a sockpuppetry case, but within that evidence is vandalism by the IP what would be catergorized as :Modifying users' comments". Should I wait until the SSP case is decided? Socby19 (talk) 23:29, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with your removal of the speedy delete tag I placed on that article. The text obviously contains nonesense. This may be due to the editors ability to translate from an original (unreferenced) Dutch source. I want this article to go onto a deletion discussion please. Sting_au | Talk 00:19, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well ok. I'm all for giving editors the freedom to create articles on any subject. It definately does need a cleanup though. I'll tag it with "unreferenced" and "cleanup" so editors can see it needs attention. Cheers, Sting_au | Talk 00:27, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the kind message and congratulations on your RfA. WifeOfPedro has been muttering about setting up a "Wikipedia Widdows" website - so whatever we do never ever let your wife or my wife meet! Cheers. Pedro :  Chat  16:15, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DYK[edit]

Just a little suggestion, in the DYK next update credits, the instructions are to put which date the hook is from. This information is rarely used. It's only used if someone thinks the hook is not suitable for the next DYK and puts it back. Unlike controversial articles, most DYK hooks are not controversial. The not so good ones just don't get picked and have suggestions for improvement noted.

I also see that you adopt people. May I be adopted for a few months?

Adoption is just for some occasional advice that I might seek. My editing patterns are that I like to help out at DYK having submitted a hook myself (but I didn't pick it for next update to avoid a conflict of interest), created an article that got merged with another article (but I participated in a friendly discussion instead of getting angry of the merge and even was complimented on my demeanor and politeness), and often read about a particular topic and then start editing a few articles (such as Norway related articles or J-pop at one time or another). I've also commented on featured article candidates, trying to give (hopefully) helpful suggestions.

Vandal warnings[edit]

Good work at AIV, where I've seen a few of your reports today on my travels. However, but I too am uneasy about the "you've been reported" warning you've been leaving - I knew that a similar template had been deleted in the past, and then I found the link to it on this talk page! My worry is that it could encourage some vandals to go on the rampage before they're blocked (which, if AIV is backlogged, could take some time). Another point, whilst I'm here, is that shared IPs will often change user, and so a "final warning" from a couple of days ago wasn't necessarily issued to the same individual as the one currently vandalising e.g. Special:Contributions/24.63.198.207. If there's a history of vandalism from the shared IP, of course, I'd be inclined to start the warnings higher up than level 1, but personally I wouldn't find it necessary to jump straight in with an AIV report. Other wise, carry on! Regards, BencherliteTalk 13:58, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • You are right that there was a previous template that looked a lot like the one i am using. In fact, mine is just a modification of the origional template, which i found on the page of a long living vandal. I mainly use it to denote that the user has been reported, since leaving a vand4im on the users page (Telling them its the ONLY warning they will get) is rather silly (After all, i need to give a warning, even if he already received a final). However, since you are the second user that tells me not to use it, i will simply shelve that template for now.

Second, a shared IP indeed doesn't have to be a similar user, yet i deem vandalism to be vandalism. Each user gets AT LEAST two warnings from me, and those two warning cases are incredibly rare, as most previous vandals get three warnings from me. Standard non warned users get 4 warnings before getting reported, unless its 100% clear that its destructive vandalism.

Now you might wonder why this user got a level 4 warning at once. This one was actually a special case. My lupin log was about 3 updates backlogged, and in those three edits i noticed this particular user making multiple vandalism edits. For speeds sake i decided just to issue a level 4 warning, instead of three separate warnings. Hope this explains why i issued a high level warning at once :) --Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 14:09, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A question re one of your edits[edit]

Hi there.

I was keen to ask you about an article for the company I work for being deleted by you. The article was for WCRS (a Top 10 UK advertising agency). I can understand why you would conclude that the article was blatant advertising but I wanted to ask why this was not allowed when a whole host of other ad agencies are allowed (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_advertising_agencies).

Is it, perhaps, the way I wrote the article? If so, I'd love to get some tips. Thanks for your time.

Cheers, Laurence —Preceding unsigned comment added by LaurenceParkes (talkcontribs) 18:54, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We need FULL protection on Steve McClaren, not semi-[edit]

It's registered users now, thus my second request. Please review the article history, and you'll see what I'm talking about. Mr Which??? 22:29, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've full protected it, after you did. Sorry! crossed wires I think. How long did you protect for? Ah. I have checked. Longer than me! I will put it back to your version, but I must say that it may need to be reviewed rather soon - two weeks seems an awfully long time for a current events article! Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 22:36, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Cocks. I'm confused now. It is fully protected until 5th December at the moment. Registered users are 'crystal ball' editing it, but not actually vandalising it. Are you on IRC? I cannot see you. Do you think it needs taking down to a day or two? I am going to take it down to two days of full again. It will look messy, but to hell with it. Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 22:42, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to both of you. The registered editors are both crystal ball editing, as well as outright vandalizing it. It's been a pain in the ass. And to think I just stumbled upon it during RC patrol ... :( Mr Which??? 22:43, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed. Two days of full. History is a mess. I will blame this on the England fans. Job done. Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 22:45, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rhombus (band)[edit]

You deleted the page 'Rhombus (band)' after it was flagged for deletion. The page provided information about the UK goth rock band, Rhombus - including a brief edited description (i didn't get chance to add much more information before it was removed!!), a list of band members and a brief discography.

I'm not sure what part of this information warrants deletion, as i was basing (or was at least beginning to base) the layout on other pages that already exist for similar bands.

I deleted Bposter.jpg under this speedy deletion criterion, namely that it had been uploaded "for non-commercial use only", "non-derivative use" or "used with permission", with no assertion of fair use. You are welcome to re-upload the file with the correct licence, and then provide the appropriate free-use rationale as appropriate. See WP:FAIR and WP:FURG. I added my name to your user page. I hope this is ok with you. Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 17:47, 27 November 2007 (UTC) I also saw your list of other adoptees. One of them has a similar name to someone who misbehaved on wikipedia, if I recall correctly. I'll AGF and not make accusations.
