4-8-4 Photo

Hello. I am preparing an article on the SAR 500 class. I have restored a B&W picture from 1927 which I would like to add to the article. The photographer is unknown, and definitely dead, and I am not aware the picture has been published. I got lost in the Commons stuff about copyright, but noticed it was "easy"! I also have an official print from 1936 that would make a good addition. Do you think I use these?Mav62 (talk) 11:50, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Bayerische B V

Hi, I made a redirect Bayerische B V to Bavarian B V, since that is the original German name of the locs, and also added it in italics to the article. I see you are making a whole list of these. Re: German railway articles

The simple answer right now to adding articles to the Trains project recent changes list is to manually add them. The list was originally created manually, but was last updated by a bot based on the placement of the {{TrainsWikiProject}} banner on the talk pages. I was hoping that we could have a bot update the list about once every week or so, but haven't had a chance to follow through on this yet. Slambo (Speak) 10:41, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Regarding the article on the 06 class 4-8-4, I have edited the mention of these under the 4-8-4 wheel arrangement. The specification in the DRG 06 article give cylinder dimensions of 520x720mm, whereas Railway World 1952-53 gives 450 x 660mm. They also note Borsig as the builder. The information is in a table, and could be in error, but three 520x720 cylinders would be pretty hungry!Mav62 (talk) 12:38, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for checking, I'll undo the cylinder dimensions on the 4-8-4 page. Sad that we lost these, and Chapelon's 242A1, and also Gresley's P1. The 06 must have been a mighty locomotive. ICE 1 / DB Class 401

I have just noticed your renaming of the ICE 1 article back to DB Class 401. The revision history says: "ICE 1 article moved here to conform with German locomotive and Wikipedia naming conventions". I don't quite get the point of this re-renaming. Only the power heads of the ICE 1 trainset are reffered to as "class 401" while the cars in between are designated as classes 801, 802, 803 and 804. The naming conventions for rail vehicles on the German Wikipeda do not yet say what should be done in such cases. I also haven't found any clue in the English naming conventions that would require such a renaming.

From what I understand, there is no point in referring to the whole trainset by the name of its powerheads, so I would say we should rather move it back to ICE 1. What do you think? --Bigbug21 (talk) 15:12, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your prompt response (on my talk page). I have just undone the renaming. By the way: It's the same thing with the ICE 2. The power heads go by the name "Baureihe 402" while the four types of coaches have the designations Baureihe 805 to Baureihe 808...

Hi Bermicourt, I've modified the above template for "Rail transport in Germany", set up some directories in Category:Rail transport in Germany articles by quality and I've run the bot. As all the entries in the table are zero (the table is blank), there is a problem. Looking at some of your task force articles, e.g. Talk:DB Class 420 the templates are rating them for WP Germany and for WP rail transport but not for WP Rail transport in Germany. This seems the be the case for all the articles that I have looked at within the scope of your task force. The problem appears to lie in Template:TrainsWikiProject. This is a protected template, so we need someone such as User:Slambo, who is an Administrator, to fix the problem for us. Note: The bot will update the table every three days or so, but as none of the articles have a quality assessment, the table will remain empty until the template is fixed.Pyrotec (talk) 20:45, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes there are separate importance ratings for TrainsWP and for national projects such as DE and UK. I've added DE-importance ratings this morning for your two GA-class articles (only) and I ran the bot a couple of times to populate the table. The bot will run automatically. "English spelling"

Hi! Why did you move München Berduxstraße railway station to München Berduxstrasse railway station with a remark "English spelling"? You removed the ß - okay. But what about the umlaut-ü? Is that part of English spelling nowadays? I think the move is somewhat senseless... --FloSch (talk) 19:53, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

This has been debated before. English speakers have a problem with 'ß' and tend to pronounce it as a 'B' so it is worth changing. On the other hand umlauts tend to be ignored. To anglicise it fully it should be retitled to 'Munich Berduxstrasse', but so far I have resisted the temptation to make such a sweeping change as there are so many stations with 'München' in the title. The ß is perfectly acceptable in the English Wikipedia, and pages like Uhlandstrasse (Berlin U-Bahn) where the page title disagrees with the bolded name in the article and the picture just look ridiculous. Please do not move any more pages to incorrect spellings without discussion (and please don't start another discussion like the WP:LAME edit war on Voßstraße). I wasn't expecting you to know the history of the lame ß debates (if you want to get bored, read the archives of WT:GSWN and WT:GER, where this topic comes up every now and then). Thank you for agreeing not to do any more ß-related page moves. Use of {{translated}} template

Hi - I see you are creating some new articles using the {{translated}} template. You may not be aware, but this template was nominated for deletion recently, and consensus was to delete it (see Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2008 December 11#Template:Translated). The template {{translated page}} should be placed on the article's talk page instead.

The issue is that it is completely subjective; if, say, they had all won awards with 'for your pioneering railway work' as a rationale then we can include them, but otherwise it just boils down to 'so-and-so says this man is notable for his railway work, therefore so-and-so has put him in'. Your edit on Basel Badischer Bahnhof

Hi there,

I noticed you moved the page about Basel Bad Bf to Basel Badischer station, stating that this would be the correct English translation. I had to revert that change, as Badischer Bahnhof is a proper name by itself and therefore should stand untranslated - or else, we might go ahead on the German wikipedia and get ourselves a nice London Königskreuzung. ;)

Funny german word

Hello. I'm stuck on a word (it's for improvements to the MaK G 1206 article (the text is from loks-aus-kiel.de) :

Neben einem umfangreichen Ausrüstungspaket für Einsätze im skandinavischen Winter gehören dazu Drehgestelle mit Lenkerführung für eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 100 km/h und Getriebe mit einer im Stillstand schaltbaren Stufe.

In addition to equipment for scandinavian conditions.."Lenkerführung für eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit.." for a maximum speed of 100km/h were fitted as well as a very low speed gear. (Very approx transl.)

I thinks this is "yaw dampers for a maximum speed of..." as in "anti-hunting dampers" - but there are reasons I doubt this is right - what else could it be?

PS in rail transport by country Germany has it's own page but I can't find anywhere to put new articles about french etc rail. Maybe that taskforce doesn't exist?Carrolljon (talk) 19:01, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks - I think you are right (probably) - fuhrung seems to be leading/steering - so a Beugniot lever might be in there.

Things is, as you say the Beugniot lever reduces wear and tear as you say - but the impression I got was that it was saying that it could go faster becuase of the "Lenkerführung" - later on it says that the same bogies were used in a later model which was wear free - so that decides it for me.. (as yaw dampers dont reduce wear as far as I know)

Hi - I'm not sure what you were trying to do here, but I've reverted your changes as the base template has not been moved. Are you trying to rename the template, or create a similar one? If you want to move it, you'll need an administrator to move it for you as the page is protected (I'm happy to do this for you if you can show consensus). If you want to create a new similar template, then I suggest the easiest way is to simply cut and paste the source code of the template and documentation, giving the source in the initial edit summary. Hi it's not usual practice to delete others' talk page comments, in fact it is generally regarded as quite a serious thing to have done. Please see my comments on that page. I wonder if you are being a little ambitious attempting to set up such an elaborate taskforce when you don't appear to be very familiar with Wikipedia's modes of operation? Consensus is seen as incredibly important on Wikipedia, and the wider the effect of an edit, the more important consensus is. Consensus can only be built by communication between editors, which doesn't appear to have been your style on this project to date. Höllental

Hi Bermicourt, I just noticed Your article on the Höllental in the Black Forest. Thank You for creating that in the first place, but I would like to ask where you came up with Hölle Valley as an english name - never heard that before. I would like to suggest that either translate it completely (hell valley) or, to be accurate, use the proper name "Höllental", then give the explanation about the name in the introduction (compare Schweinfurt). Ohh-kay ... to a certain extent. There's a difference in the connotation. Elbe valley, or Elbtal, refers to the Valley of the Elbe, right. Höllental does not - it is not the Valley of Hölle, or Valley of the Hölle. Höllentäler get their names usually, as far as I've heard, because people were afraid of them and considered them ugly, scary, in one word, hellish places.

It seems to me that the english wikipedia is a little inconsistent here, making a difference between, say, lakes and valleys. Perhaps a difference ought to be made between valley named according to rivers running through them, and valleys named for another reason. Though you're right - but then, as far as I can tell, Elbe valley or Rhine valley are established english usage. I very much doubt that Hölle Valley is established english usage - unless it refers to a valley with a river named Hölle in it. Then, it would be Hölletal in german - not Höllental. Also, according to the examples given, now you've got two names for each valley - Rothbach valley in the Black Forest, Selbitz valley in Franconia, in addition to Höllental. May I also add that you seem to contradict yourself? "...do not translate the proper noun, unless it has an accepted English equipvalent": Sure as hell Hell's the accepted english equivalent of Hölle. Even so I question your translation - I think you'd have to include the "n" (Höllental -> Höllen Valley), but that, perhaps just me.

I'm looking for a Britannica here, to see what it did with these valleys. I'd question the use of tourist guides as orientation in this instance. Did I get that right that you did not translate yourself, but picked up Hölle Valley either from a dict., or a tourist guide?

"Use the original if there is no established English usage" seems to me to indicate Höllental as the best idea, still. However, the "real" german name should, in this instance, be found somewhere on the english wikipedia, even if it's just a redirect to Höllen Valley. Hope I wasn't too disagreeable. Thnx, Bermicourt. Agree with the conclusion, and, of course, your doubt. :) I certainly did not mean to propose translation. Just to think what would happen to Oxford/Ochsenfurth - that would never get straight! On a more serious note - the village named Hölle next to a Höllental does not necessarily indicate that the valley must have been named for the village. Might as well have been the other way round. Proper nouns and station names

Guten Tag! I notice you are moving some railway stations to remove the (in my opinion) redundant "railway". Nice work. However, I am concerned that the capitalization is incorrect. All railway stations are proper nouns, and so the full name, including "station" or "railway station" should be capitalized. To quote Proper noun: "Proper nouns (also called proper names) are nouns representing unique entities (such as London, Jupiter or Johnny), as distinguished from common nouns which describe a class of entities (such as city, planet or person)." To quote Wikipedia:Naming conventions (capitalization) "For page titles, always use lowercase after the first word, and do not capitalize second and subsequent words, unless: the title is a proper noun." [my emphasis]. I am aware that many railfans seem to not know the capitalization rules; I was for a while also confused after joining Wikipedia, and perhaps the majority of rail-related articles do not follow the rules of the English language. In this, the English language Wiki, the following is very desirable. The km and mm at the end become redundant. Why not use the existing templates that are template:Infobox rail network; template:Infobox rail; template:Infobox SG rail (with or without | metric = yes); template:Infobox rail line. Re Zabergäu Railway. I corrected the "problem". If there are any others that got overlooked, the fix is easy, it is all in the placement of the decimal point, one place to the left. Bermi, Nay my lad, JANE'S is British. The address that I have in my 1969/1970 edition is: Jane's Yearbooks (note the plural), 49/50 Poland Street, London, WIA 2LG England. Telephone : 01-437-0686. Jane's, which is alive and well and quite likeky still at the same address, also publishes authoritive yearbooks on other topics such as Warships and Airplanes. JANE'S lists both existing railways by country an sundry railway rolling stock and equipment manufacturers. It also lists transit and subway systems. It is "the Bible" of the world railway industry. For the whole scoop, put Jane's into Google and see. The larger public libraries of the bigger cities in the English speaking word may well have a hard copy of Jane's in their reference section. Hello! As far as I know they weren't in use. Usually sysops look if something is in use before they delete. Btw, they used templates from de-WP so are you sure they worked at all? Bermi, I took care of the gradient(s) in the boxes at the same time that I introduced 1435 by moving the decimal point one digit to the left. So, unless I overlooked an article, they should all read at the correct %. The per mille, or pro mille, symbol is not even available on my standard English language Wiki mark up or insert choices. You may also note that I had revised the box to reflect standard North American, including Canadian civil engineering, usage %. What the Brits and the Aussies do is another "kettle of fish". Bermi, old chap, you need to be much more, much more, carefull with the links that you created. Examples: Railbuses was Railbuses. Abt, Strub, Cogwheel & Piston stroke was Abt, Strub Cogwheel, & Piston stroke. overpressure was overpressure. Couplers was Couplers. catenary was catenary. My appologies. When I went thru the template itself I only had to make the following two changes: overpressure, Piston stroke was overpressure, Piston stroke. Permit me, however, to point out that overpressure and live steam are not at all the same thing. The former applies to various explosives and the latter applies to boilers, steam engines and steam locomotives. gallery

Hi, hab dein Problem mit gelöschten Galleries gelesen, drauf geantwortet (sameuser hat mir Common Kestrel gefickt). Ich übersetz das jetzt nicht, ist zu lang:

In a nutshell (I have just restored some galleries also), a simple misunderstanding.
General policy is that galleries are always inappropriate in short articles ("Wikipedia is not an image gallery"), and in such cases they are best moved to Commons (revamping is only an option in longer articles)
But for longer articles, and to illustrate the text, galleries on Wikipedia are OK "where a collection of images can illustrate aspects of a subject that cannot be easily or adequately described by text or individual images".
Which - as per "adequately" - could apply here: an overview of the line cannot adequately presented by in-text images due to layout constraints. But the gallery needs revamping: the map as first image is rather nice but might go in-text above the gallery, and the gallery should run from Cologne to Frankfurt Central Station (or the other way around), presenting notable features directly related to the rail line. E.g. tunnels, bridges, stations, but probably not File:Main 08 2006 140.jpg (that could go into a gallery at Bundesautobahn 3 though). And the images should be presented in the proper sequence, i.e. as they would be encountered by a traveller.
As a rule-of-thumb:
Galleries are cool in Wikipedia,
  • if the article is already better than Start-class, and
  • if the gallery content is directly relevant to some text paragraph's content, and
  • if 4 or more images are needed to illustrate a paragraph of text or if for some other reason (e.g. layout) the images cannot be placed alongside the text.

E.g. Oriental Turtle Dove is what I would just barely consider OK... the second pic is quite useful, the others not so, so at face value it should not stand. But it improves layout quite a bit, so it is more helpful than disruptive. If it had like 3 rows of such images, I would mercilessly <!-- outcomment --> it (not delete, that is too harsh!) and let someone from the Commons crew deal with it. River moves

Hi, I see you have been moving several German rivers from titles like "Leda River" to titles like "River Leda". AFAIK "River X" is primarily used in the UK, and "X River" in the USA, Canada etc. There has been quite some discussion about that at WP:RIVERS, the outcome was that both forms can be used, but local usage (in English speaking countries) is followed. The latter doesn't apply here, but since all German (and French, and Polish, and Italian, ...) rivers were at either "X" or "X River", I think it's best to leave it like that. I'm not sure I agree with what you wrote about adjectives. In cases like "Red River" it's clear, but it's not so clear for Athabasca River, Columbia River, Coeur d'Alene River etc. Personally, I would prefer using "X (river)", in order to make it clear that "river" is not really part of the name, but that was deprecated. Articles on places in Germany

Good work with the various articles you created on places in Germany. Congrats! Just two minor points:

  1. Following a lengthy discussion some time ago, it was decided that {{coordinate}} shouldn't be used and replaced with {{coordinate}}. Please use {{coord}} directly instead. Especially since, e.g. de:Template:Coordinate has other defaults [1]. I took the liberty to revert the redirect at {{coordinate}}
  2. According to WP:LAYOUT, in many cases, "References" and "Further reading" are preferred to "Sources" or "Literature".

Wenn du weiterhin so vorgehst, dann würde ich dich bitten, bei allen Fotos in der Wikipedia.de die Fotos umzubenennen in File. Sonst sind sie nicht mehr zu sehen. This should not be an issue. I copy all images from de.wiki to Commons using Commonshelper. If the software subsequently deletes the de.wiki image without re-linking it to Commons, that is surely not my problem. However I haven't found a single case of this problem, including the one above. Old house types

Hi' I'm realy happy somebody has done some more translating for de:Fachhallenhaus and de:Ernhaus. I had done some for the Fachhallenhaus but as you may have guessed from the list on the discussion page ran into translation problems. As a suggestion for the english articles I think both are rather house types than styles. Actually both may be regarded as families of closely related types that have been built in many styles over the centuries. Speaking of relationships, it may be of interest, that the Middle German house is very closely related to the south german house types with the southermost examples in some valleys of the Swiss Alps. A better known close cousin is for example the de:Schwarzwaldhaus of the Black Forest between Bavaria and the southern Rhein Valley. But of more interest for the English speaking world may be the relationship to the crosspassage house of England and therefore also to the Wealden hall house(e.g.Bayleaf farmhouse and Pendean farmhouse, for more info on these see Weald & Downland Open Air Museum) house types. As for the Fachhallenhaus You may want to study the discussion page to get an idea of the naming difficulties and relationships of this house type. I was desperatly looking for some publications in english to see if there was some english tradition in naming these types of buildings and construction details as I dont think it good to come up with knew translations for objects that have been translated otherwise in history. The Ernhaus describes the way a house is organized inside. The Vierkanter and so on describes how the yard or farmstead is organized. So there are Vierkanter with the main house being a Ernhouse, Mittertennenhouse or something completely different. Some people use the same term to describe both farmsteads in Austria and Denmark, although the individuel house types included may vary considerably. As for the Ernhouse text, it was largely written by someone from the northern border of its destributation, so a lot of details from its southern variants are indeed missing. By the way the northwestern extend of this housetype is considered by some to be Ireland. (see [3] and [4] As for the railway subjects...the de:Lübeck-Büchener Eisenbahn is the one that build my local line and stations. I remember the special carriages of the de:Doppelstock-Stromlinien-Wendezug der LBE as a child shortly before they were taken out of service in 1977. moving to redirects

Hi, "normal" users (like me) can move a page over a redirect, but only if the edit history of the redirect contains only one entry. If the edit history is longer, an admin has to do it.
