Copying (including translation) within Wikipedia[edit]

Hello, Beth7g. :) I came upon the copyright concerns flagged at Ralph Wormley Curtis today and believe I have figured out what happened here. In the future, if this happens again, can you please place an explanation on the talk page of the article. It would be appreciated, as it could save a lot of time!

What seems to have happened here is that you were working to create a translation of the German Wikipedia article, which that website also translated. This is not a copyright problem in terms of their translation, as yours differs. However, it is a copyright problem if we don't give due credit to the German Wikipedians who wrote the original article.

While a lot of people are confusing on this subject, content on Wikipedia is not public domain; it is simply very liberally licensed for use and modification. One of the conditions of the license is attribution. It's perfectly okay to copy content from one Wikipedia article to another or to translate it from one Wikipedia article to another, but attribution is required. Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia talks about how to do this - at its most basic, what's needed is a note in the edit summary and a template on the talk page.

I have provided the note in edit summary, here. Please note that I have linked the article; this is required. If you're not familiar with the process, it's a simple matter of putting the language code in front of the article title inside your brackets - so [[:de:Ralph Wormeley Curtis]]. This makes a quick link to the German version of the article.

The template on the talk page is a little more complicated, but not too bad. The only required parameters are the language name and the article title. You can see what it looks like filled out at Talk:Ralph Wormley Curtis. The directions for using the template, for future reference, are at Template:Translated page.

Sometimes bots will pick up translations like this even when all the formalities are met. This is not a problem; these things always get human review eventually. :) Just put a note on the talk page, and the person who reviews it will see what happened.
