Hello and welcome to my talk page (I'm glad you were able to find it)! I've created a special sandbox for the Percy Lavon Julian article here. If I understood what you wrote on the article's talk page, most of the improvements you'd like to make seem to be related to the article's "Oak Park and Julian Laboratories" section. So, before we jump into the sandbox and start editing, do you have any questions? -- Bgpaulus (talk) 20:46, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

The African American history in the villages of Maywood and Oak Park is complex and complicated and the Julians were a part of this complexity. During his time in Maywood Dr Julian lead open housing marches, was the first African American President of the Washington School PTA and the first black school board president of the district 89 (Maywood/Melrose Park/Broadview)school board. In addition he was the first black chemist at the American Can Company (for 6 months) and then was fired due to his race after which he went to work for Glidden in Franklin Park while continuing to live in Maywood(15 years total). African Americans came to the area in the late 1890's and settled in Oak Park and River Forest and continued to reside there in smaller and smaller numbers until 1963.Their church were burned and rebuilt and burned again at Harlem and West-gate in Oak Park in the 1920's. After such hostile treatment their first time of being there they ultimately migrated to Maywood and established a vibrant community. Therefore your statement of he was the first black resident of Oak Park is incorrect. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 168.93.97.125 (talk) 23:38, 19 June 2012 (UTC)
Lennel Grace, Member of the Maywood Historic Preservation Commision

Percy L Julians Home

Not certain who wrote your copy about Dr Julian but their research was not very good. I am a member of the Maywood Historic Preservation Commission and would like for my comments to be incorporated into the account of his life. You stated that you felt this should be included in the Oak Park section and I disagree. There should be a Maywood section created to explain clearly his time in Maywood and (as stated in the PBS special "Forgotten Genius") the fact that many of the discoveries were done by Dr. Percy L. Julian of Maywood 9not Oak Park), IL

My uncle (who is still alive) was a friend of his in Maywood

How do we get this done and set the record straight?

Sand Box / Edit for Dr Percy Julian

How do I get to it and how do we begin....new to this

Lennel Grace Maywood Historic Preservation Commision — Preceding unsigned comment added by 168.93.97.125 (talk) 23:58, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Hello, 168.93.97.125/LG. First things first:
  1. I could be mistaken, but from some of your comments, I'm inferring that you haven't yet read the introduction to Wikipedia. I urge you to do that first, before we begin, just to make sure you and I have a common frame of reference for discussing things like editing on Wikipedia.
  2. You're not required to do so, but I nonetheless recommend that you create an account. In particular, it allows your contributions to be attributed to your personalized username; some IP addresses (for example, perhaps the one you've been using, 168.93.97.125) can change periodically, and may be shared by several users, which can be confusing to other editors. Before you choose your username, though, you should also read Wikipedia's policy on usernames.
  3. The sandbox I created is here. For our reference, it contains a snapshot of the article's "Oak Park and Julian Laboratories" section, but we can easily create a "Maywood, Illinois" section before it (which I've already done). And, just to see what it looks like, I've also tried splitting the aforementioned section into two: "Oak Park, Illinois" and "Julian Laboratories".
Finally, don't worry about being new; every Wikipedia editor was "new" once. Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 21:08, 23 June 2012 (UTC)

Re: Vandalism on User:SummerPhD

Re your message: The IPs and new accounts are angry at SummerPhD because xe was reverting their attempts to vandalize the Casual game article. The worldwide IPs are due to the attack against the article and a few others being originated from 4chan. It common for video game articles to get attacked this way. -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 16:50, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Wowzers. Thanks for the explanation; I hadn't seen anything quite like that before. -- Bgpaulus (talk) 17:40, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi regarding this IP user, I have added I higher warning given the seriousness of the vandalism. Callanecc (talkcontribs) talkback (etc) template appreciated. 13:03, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up, Callanecc; I came within a gnat's whisker of doing that, myself. Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 13:06, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
I saw that you are already a member of the CVU, but a trip through the academy would probably be useful. On the warning - I rarely go 1, 2, 3, 4; if what they do is clearly disruptive, especially offensive (etc - like the IP's edit), or especially if they do the same thing after a warning I usually jump levels (primarily jumping lvl 1 or lvl 2). Callanecc (talkcontribs) talkback (etc) template appreciated. 13:11, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
This page which I created may also be of interest to you. Callanecc (talkcontribs) talkback (etc) template appreciated. 13:16, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
I appreciated the advice. I've often been tempted to jump warning levels, but WP:AGF and the second criterion at WP:AIV ("The user must be given enough warnings to stop their disruption.") together usually give me pause (there have been a few exceptions, of course). It's my hope that I'll never do anything that would earn me a trout or, worse, one of the "uw-tempabuse" warnings, so I generally try to take the high road and err on the side of caution -- even then, however, I'm the first one to admit that my track record isn't (and likely never will be) perfect. Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 18:07, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
Hello, Bgpaulus/Archive 2! The instructors at the Counter-Vandalism Unit Academy have seen your hard work reverting vandalism, and we would like to thank you. But do you want to go to the next level? Would you like to know how reverts, warnings, reports, blocks, and bans all come together to keep this Encyclopedia free from disruption? Then consider enrolling today! Callanecc (talkcontribs) talkback (etc) template appreciated. 13:04, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for the invitation, Callanecc. I'm always looking for better ways to do things on Wikipedia, so I'll gladly throw my name in the hat in just a bit. Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 18:07, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

On behalf of the new user who I just falsely accused of vandalism ...

Mea culpa

Whack!
You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know you did something silly.

Oh, the irony. -- Bgpaulus (talk) 23:22, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Counter Vandalism Unit Academy

Hi there Bgpaulus, welcome to the Counter Vandalism Unit Academy. As your instructor, I am here to answer and questions you might have and to give you support - please feel free to ask me anything as and when you need it. I have also created you an Academy page which can be found at User:ItsZippy/CVUA/Bgpaulus. Please add this to your watchlist, as I will use it to take you through my course and to give you various anti-vandalism tasks. Your first task is waiting there for you now. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 14:56, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Thank you, Zippy. I've added the page to my watchlist and will reply there in short order. Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 20:36, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Oklahoma State motto change

What I wrote is factual. Research it yourself. I even included the house bill number. Do you own Wikipedia? Why are you scouring pages to find things to delete? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.13.241.238 (talk) 14:50, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi, 68.13.241.238, and thank you for your note. First, I think you might have me confused with someone else; as far as I can tell, I've never edited the Oklahoma article. I believe the only article you and I have both edited recently is the one on Jessica Feshbach.
To answer your specific questions, in the order in which you asked them:
  1. No, I don't "own" Wikipedia. In fact, Wikipedia's conduct policy on Ownership of articles explicitly forbids "ownership". All Wikipedia content is edited collaboratively and no one, no matter how skilled, or of how high standing in the community, has the right to act as though they are the owner of a particular article, let alone the entire encyclopedia.
  2. One of the great things about Wikipedia is that it can be edited constructively by anyone, including you and me. For my part, among other things, I'm a member of Wikipedia's Recent changes patrol, a voluntary communal patrol in which editors check recent edits made by other editors to ensure that they're in line with Wikipedia's three prinicipal core policies of neutral point of view, verifiability, and no original research.
Before you continue editing, I encourage you to please take a look at the wikilinks I've sprinkled throughout this reply, as well as this introduction to Wikipedia. I know there's a lot of information to absorb, so you may want to start with Wikipedia's fundamental operating principles, which have been nicely summarized in the form of these five "pillars", and go from there. Taking some time now to become familiar with the basics of Wikipedia might save you some frustration later.
I hope this answers your questions. If you have any other questions, or if I can help you in some other way, you're welcome to drop another note here on this talk page. Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 17:09, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, but exposure does not count as a spoiler.

According to Wikipedia: A spoiler is a piece of information in an article about a narrative work (such as a book, feature film, television show or video game) that reveals plot events or twists, and thus may "spoil" the experience for any reader who learns details of the plot in this way rather than in the work itself.

The method to a magic trick does not count as a a spoiler. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.12.92.78 (talk) 20:30, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

NeoGAF vandalism

I was told by a gay Moderator of Neogaf (AmiRox) to perform these changes.

I don't see the problem, everything I have posted is 100% true and factual. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.49.135.90 (talk) 22:52, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Your recent edit history gainsays your claim of innocence, however, on the absolutely slimmest chance that you just might try editing Wikipedia constructively, I suggest you start by reading this. -- Bgpaulus (talk) 23:11, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Any help would be appreciated, but we have to be carefull, as i think some of his edits are ok.Jason Rees (talk) 21:02, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Yeeshk. Okay, I'll start at the "bottom" (oldest) and work my way up. I find it hard to believe that every one of the 1995/6 hurricanes really needed to be "corrected" like he did on 1 July, but if you can give me an example of one of the "good" edits, it may speed me up a bit. Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 21:08, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
This one is definitely ok, but generally if hes changed the pressure to the nearest 5 or whatever then it probably needs RVing. Thanks for the help :)Jason Rees (talk) 21:12, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. I'll be extra careful on the more recent stuff. Glad to help. -- Bgpaulus (talk) 21:29, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
Honestly, I'm not sure if I'm making things better or worse. When I started digging into the Tropical Storm Faxai (2007) article, for example, I ended up making these changes. I'll keep chipping away at it, but half the battle is that I'm not very familiar with the subject matter (hurricanes, cyclones, typhoons, etc).
Generally i think your edits are ok. There are one or two that ive reviewed and done a very partial RV on.Jason Rees (talk) 00:03, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
  • Is it correct to say that, since this is the English-language Wikipedia, the JTWC naming convention prevails? For example, if only the JMA calls something "severe", then that's not reason enough to change its name all over the place, right?
Generally we tend to follow the World Meteorological Organisation's official warning centre for the naming stuff which in this case is the JMA, however there are some exceptions to this rule and i eprsoanlly would not call it reason enough to change whats in the article already unless doing something else.Jason Rees (talk) 00:03, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
  • Also, I found this and this for verifying dates and pressures -- are they reliable? And, should I be directly citing them (in case other editors come along and think I'm the one doing the subtle vandalism)?
Their both reliable with the first one in particular being very reliable since it is the JTWC's own post season reviewed data (Best tracks in other words). However for pressure we have to go back to the JMAs ones as the JTWC do not do pressure even though they do. Jason Rees (talk) 00:03, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 23:03, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
I should note that i have been through most of the edits now and RVd where appropriate.Jason Rees (talk) 00:03, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
Okay. I'm sorry I couldn't have helped more, but I do appreciate the learning opportunity; I know way more about storm names now than I did when I woke up this morning (interesting stuff (no, really!)). Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 05:22, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
Don't worry about being trying not to be sarcastic with me, as i find the naming stuff rather fascinating as well. For example between WW2 and 2000 what is essentially todays JTWC, named TC's in the WPAC, while the Indians only started assign names to TC's in 2004.Jason Rees (talk) 16:07, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Kansas City Storm and number of WSFL Division Championships

The Storm did not earn a championship in 2011 as they were removed from the WSFL for unprofessional conduct by the ownership and can be verified by WSFL owner and management. The Missouri Phoenix was awarded the WSFL division championship which the team used storm players but the team played as the Phoenix.

Also on the Storm's website it states sevaral falsified statements regarding the 2011 division championship and statements made by the WSFL owner which he didnt make. The Storm need to correct their page and stop telling lies and shut the team down. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.230.102.21 (talk) 21:45, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Replied on the article's talk page. -- Bgpaulus (talk) 18:06, 23 June 2012 (UTC)
Are you going to verify this info? if not who do i need to get a hold of? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.230.102.21 (talk) 22:41, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Verify what? I don't believe you've provided any reliable, verifiable sources, the need for which I tried to describe in my 23 June reply on the article's talk page. Especially, please note WP:BURDEN. -- Bgpaulus (talk) 23:05, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
I am currently a staff member of the WSFL and you can feel free to contact the WSFL and owner Randall Fields at WSFLfootball@hotmail.com he will be more than happy to verify the Kansas City Storm's management have falsified information on this site. The Storm have been told several times to remove the information regarding any reference to the 2011 season and false statements about league owner Randall Fields from her website and they continue to ignore requests. I encoursge you to contact the WSFL and verify the information and remove the falsified information the Kansas City Storm continue to put on this website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.230.102.21 (talk) 09:38, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
I've tried (apparently unsuccessfully) to explain this, so I'll try again: Verifiability, No original research and Neutral point of view are Wikipedia's core content policies. If you'd take a few minutes to read at least the introductions to these three policies, you might save yourself some frustration and maybe even find a way to update the article without becoming embroiled in another edit war. -- Bgpaulus (talk) 12:19, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
Well first of all you dont have to address me in that manner. Second it is apparent that the Kansas City Storm have clearly lied about the information on their page and you seem to accept it with checking facts. There is no reasoning with KC Storm management they will continue to lie and mislead as they have with you and you accept it. I am a staff member would like to have the page shut down if you cannot help resolve this matter or get me in touch with someone higher up to resolve this matter — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.230.102.21 (talk) 01:57, 6 July 2012 (UTC)
Wikipedia's deletion policy can be found here and the deletion process guidelines are here. Disputes over page content are usually not dealt with by deleting the page, except in severe cases. Improving a page through regular editing is generally preferred over deletion. You haven't been willing to try the editing approach, so I'm pessimistic about your chances of success in getting the article deleted, but I wish you luck, nonetheless. If you change your mind and want to try improving the article by adding some reliable, verifiable references, then you're welcome to drop a note here. -- Bgpaulus (talk) 12:53, 9 July 2012 (UTC)
I work for the WSFL and the Kansas City Storm are claiming they won a division that I am the director of that alone is reliable and verified proof that the Kansas City Storm did not win the 2011 Division Championship. I have been involved in this league for 3 years and just that alone should be enough evidence that the information the Kansas City Storm has listed is false the Kansas Phoenix is the Division Champion on record for the 2011 season in the WSFL. It appears that the information will not be corrected even though I am the Division Director and I am a representative on the WSFL I once again ask you to either correct the information or remove the Kansas City Storm from the website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ron Killin (talkcontribs) 23:13, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
I don't know if you're the same person with whom I've already discussed this here, but it doesn't really matter; neither of you seems to be willing to learn how Wikipedia works. Just like soccer, Wikipedia operates under a set of rules. If you want to successfully improve (or remove) any article on Wikipedia, then just like playing a soccer game, you need to first learn those rules. Until then, you're wasting both your time and mine. -- Bgpaulus (talk) 04:33, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
Who is your supervisor? Maybe I can have better luck communicating with him. Its people like you who make wiki look so bad and nobody uses this site as a reference because you allow liars to post whatever they want you deem it as good. Send me to someone who can help me because either you cant or you dont care. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.54.83.198 (talk) 15:21, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
You managed to get one thing right in your last post; I no longer care to keep leading this particular horse, only to have it repeatedly refuse to take even the smallest sip. I suggest you try here next. -- Bgpaulus (talk) 15:53, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
Just be sure to inform everyone that contacts you that you do not care about the facts and you do not care about wheather someone puts lies and false statements on here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ron Killin (talkcontribs) 19:05, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
