Recent software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf17) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on March 6. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on March 11, and all Wikipedia wikis on March 13 (calendar).
  • You can now use the new search tool (CirrusSearch) on all Wikiquote projects. You can now enable it in your Beta options. [1] [2]

VisualEditor news

  • It is now easier to edit templates. Complex tools are now in the "advanced" mode. [3] [4]
  • It is also easier to edit images. You now have more options and they are explained better. [5]
  • VisualEditor adds fake blank lines so you can put your cursor there. They are now smaller and animated to be different from actual blank lines. [6]
  • We have improved the tool to add special characters. The buttons are now larger. More changes are coming. [7]
  • You can now use new keyboard shortcuts to undo the last action, clear formatting, and show the shortcut help window. [8] [9] [10]

Fathers and Daughters

It's CBS news clearly stating when filming begins, and covering that the locals have an opportunity to be cast, not a casting call. It's three days away, surely there's some wriggle room for an exception? Rusted AutoParts 23:19, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Title of article, "Extras Casting To Begin Soon For “Fathers And Daughters” Movie" It is a press release retransmitted by the TV station.
You have complained about Assassin creating articles before filming has started. You created two articles before filming had started. Do I hold Assassin to one standard and you another? Do I say, Assassin, it is ok to create an article if an iffy ref says filming will begin in two weeks? month? two months? I did not move this request. I moved this request only after gets valid refs. See, I'm not making a film that's months away from production, this has been clearly stated by two different sources with a definite filming start of March 14. I don't make articles in my sandbox so I can ask for them to be moved so I can claim credit for it. I start the article as the article is needed. Iffy ref? It's CBS news, their outpost in Pittsburgh, reporting this. It's a sturdy reference as Pittsburgh is where the movie is being shot. The site has used casting calls as reference for filming starts before, mainly because a casting call is something that requires the actors to start a certain date. The casting call informs actors when the film starts shooting. Wouldn't that be something you'd want, as an actor, to know so you aren't left in the dark and get in trouble for not fulfilling your part? I only ask for an exception because, like I said, its only three days away. I'm not the one who needs to ask permission to make an article. If you want to wait until the 14th, so be it, but I cannot see why you're deeming CBS news unreliable. I've even found the casting department's website, stating the date. the casting department of a film would not lie about the production start. Rusted AutoParts 23:50, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
You added Silence (2015 film), which wasn't going into production for 5 or so months. You complain about Assassin and then you turn around and do the same thing. I have asked you repeatedly to drop it, you cannot and then you make hypocritical statements. You also reverted me twice, which is against the rules of your probation. I guess you have never heard about bad weather, an actor getting sick or "production delays". I am holding you to the same rules you want Assassin to be held to. I was going to redirect Silence once I had all current info on it so it would be up to date when filming began and all I would then have to add was filming beginning. I won't persist on, but come March 14, it will become an article. CBS is reliable. I wasnt provoking anything, that wasnt the intention and I'm not expecting different treatment, I was only hoping for a bit of an exception as the production is only three days away. No Bgwhite, it doesn't matter whether filming begins or not now (because Rusted is trying to create it)...but when I was in it he was always the first to chase me and comment against me. When I was in it he made these issues of WP:NFF but now he needs exceptions to create a film article when its not started yet. I think SummerPhD should check this, he thinks I'm the only one here in the future articles. Bgwhite stopped me last time to comment in Rusted's conversation at my talk page so I stopped, but now Rusted is really insulting me by creating all these future articles and redirects like he did here on Fathers and Daughters, Silence (2015 film), Pan (2015 film) and Tarzan (2016 film). SummerPhD should see this Tarzan article, why did Rusted create this? SummerPHD should see Fathers and Daughters and Pan (2015 film) too, which Rusted created even with wrong contents adding in them. What are all these? Do these all need exceptions now?
Please take a look HERE when Robsinden reverted him, Rusted talked HERE and now he has reverted Bgwhite two or three times in the article. BG doesn't want us to squabble, so I won't, I'll only address what's been said here. I'm not creating redirects for the hell of it, I'm creating them as they are films in production so when filming comes around, all I have to do is make the article. I'll admit, I kept a few future films intact. Jurassic World and Silence as I felt they had enough sources each to sustain an article. Obviously I was wrong, so they're redirected. Fathers and Daughters was different seeing as filming is merely three days away, I figured we could take an exception here. I was again wrong, so I didn't further the article until the exact day. The difference between me and you is you had a chronic edit pattern for starting film articles when a), they weren't filming, b), you'd push an already existing redirect out of the way to obtain credit and c) created redirects for films that haven't been announced yet. How to Train Your Dragon 4? Peanuts 2?. See, with Pan, Tarzan and the others, they are film in production, so it makes sense to create a redirect as there'll be an article there soon anyway. But what you did was the wrong way of doing it. Feel picked on all you want, that's not the goal here. I'm simply starting the foundation for a film that's been confirmed to be made. See, I don't have a problem with you personally. I just don't understand why you want to make all these redirects/film articles. I looked at your created articles section, and in the span of 10 months you created 56 film articles. It took me 4 years to create over 30. Don't you want to make contributions in other areas as well, balance it out and allow other editors to make an article? I make articles on occasion, and balance that out by editing the Deaths section, actor bios, wrestling, etc.
Again, I'm only annoyed with the shady way you're operating. You originally moved redirects to unnecessary locations, and now it seems you doing something similar, but via sandbox. It's just me reading into things, I believe, but I can't help but feel its still a dishonest way of creating articles. I really don't want to start anything. I admit I was wrong with them redirect which I created even when the announcement made of a film, but I've stopped. But as you are saying about Silence and Jurassic World, the Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Tarzan (2016 film) has enough sources now, I think it should be created then. It is also in production, has enough sources, so you also opposed to it just because I created it...but when it's your article you would say "it has enough sources to sustain an article". What now? Please don't remind me all those redirect...I was 100% wrong with them, but look at present what you are doing and what I am doing. I've simply submit it for creation but you created articles' edit history even with wrong information just to take credits of them. And you always criticize me that Assassin wants credit of them...what about you? I've also nothing personal problems with you at all, ask Bgwhite...I've told him already that I tried many times to make even with you, and to finish all fights between us. But you always started them, I even always tried to keep away from your discussions even I've got many chances to get into your discussions but I kept myself away. But you...you always get into my discussions and opposed me, Bgwhite can say that. Now about film articles...I'm actually most interested in films so that's why I usually work on this topic...and about creating articles, actually I'm best in creating new articles. And you can see my latest articles, I've expanded them as much as I can find sources for them. I'm no saint. I never attempt to say I am. We're all flawed because we're human. It's not often that I make articles, I only create them or redirects when I know its a sure thing. Pan, Silence have been in production for awhile, as well as casting, so to me it made sense to make them. I don't establish edit history so I can have the article and save it from deletion. I am simply saving those the hassle of making an article in their user space, requesting the redirect be merged, wait, then delete it and move the user space. I didn't vote Delete so I can spite you, in fact I also optioned for Redirect. Since it did get deleted, it made sense to me to create the redirect again as it is a developing production with cast. It's just not filming yet. And same goes with the rest. It's for necessity. Those articles will be created eventually, may as well get a start on them. I was only against your methods because it inconvenienced alot of people. And I'm not saying don't create film articles. I'm saying at least let others do some of the work from time to time. We are a collective of individuals willing to provide our services to this site, we should let them contribute as well. That's what I do. Buren Fowler's work with Combat Veterans, Alumni with WWP.

Being a close friend of the Fowler family, I was up with Paula and her children and friends and warriors of the WWP project all night trying to find the words to capture the beauty of what Buren did for everyone - was what I had written done so in the wrong format? It is extremely important that this wiki page be absolutely factual and historically accurate. Your edits are greatly appreciated - I'm new to the wiki scene - but with Buren's passing being only hours ago the information posted on the wiki needs to represent his life accurately and and in a timely manner. Thank you for all your work, there will be a plethora of edits to come - Buren's work in music and charity spanned his lifetime - not just the years he spent in a few bands. Averyhise, I removed two paragraphs. First one started out as "Buren Fowler was not only one of the greatest guitar techs in the industry - he was a great American." This is called puffery It is not encyclopedic nor neutral to say these things. He may have been the greatest tech and a great American, but how does one quantify this or references this?
The second paragraph on the WWP project was not referenced and also used puffery. There needs to be an independent, reliable reference about his new technique and that it was "proved highly successful" . Bgwhite (talk) 22:52, 11 March 2014 (UTC)


Bgwhite - thank you for your commentary on puffery.... I've contacted the WWP, there will be substance enough to satisfy your needs, I'm sure. Also, as someone who served in numerous combat tours... Buren was in fact a great American - (ref: 5th pillar of Wikipedia). Thank you for your kindness and your humanity. Although your methods of editing are surely tier1, Buren's unorthodox teaching were very much indeed highly successful... He, with purpose, saved numerous high risk combat vets from suicide, drug abuse, homelessness. This can of course not be verified due to HIPPA. again, please ref wiki pillar 5.

Thanks for defying talk page consensus at Scarlett Johansson. I wasnt edit warring, I was upholding the result. Three editors disagree because there's no confirmation. Stop jumping into things that you aren't familiar with because you want to get at me. User:Tenebrae wasn't warning me, he was letting me know another editor was making pointy reverts. European vs. European

On the Nationalization of history page, BG19bot changed from European to European, with the comment "WP:CHECKWIKI error fix for #61. Punctuation goes before References." Is this the correct way to make an adjective a link? Morfusmax (talk) 14:15, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Morfusmax, the description only described one act that was completed (moving punctuation before the reference). However to answer your question, yes that is the standard way to make an adjective or a plural form into a link ([[Europe]]ean not [[Europe|European]] or [[cat]]s not [[cat|cats]]). Script for WikiProjects

Do you know if there is a scrip or something, where one can be able to choose which WikiProject an article belongs to and adds a template to the talk page? This would be great to have, if an article does not belong to a WikiProject yet.

First off, you shouldn't create film articles until filming starts. It doesn't matter if there is or isn't a redirect, a person still can create an article and put it there before you. A merge would have to be done on your part... you can edit the page and add/remove what you see fit. Bgwhite (talk) 17:24, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Page hijacking

I see you reverted me here on Nagapuri. What is page hijacking?

A while ago I noticed after editing restrictions were put into effect on List of programmes broadcast by MediaCorp Channel 5, a redirect was shaped into an article very much like the original. Is that what "page hijacking" means? Why do people do it? I patrol recent changes, so if there were signs I could look for that would be nice to know. Help me

Hello Bgwhite, I have seen that you operate one or more than one bots. I'm typing this message to ask you for some help. Actually I'm creating a new bot. Its feature are:

  • It will detect vandalism
  • Revert suspicious changes by IP users.
  • Detect and report repeated vandalism from a single user in 24hrs.
  • Will archive discussions

over all it will result a retirement of Cluebot I and Archiving bots. It will be a two in one. I have created the source code in py (python) language. But after some hard works I suddenly realised that I don't know how to implement the scripts so that the bot start working (i.e testing) and I don't know how to operate a bot by a seperate account. So, I'm here to ask if you can help me do this. Or give me instruction, how to implement it (I prefer step - by -step instructions) and how to take that bot for approval. Jim Cartar, sorry for being late as I've been sick the past few days. You can run the bot at your home computer or at http://tools.wmflabs.org I do both methods as one runs everyday at the same time while the others run when I can watch the output. Easiest if you get it working at home first. Wikipedia:RFBOT is where you request approval to run a bot. You can create a secondary account anytime by using the same methods to create your user account. Just have to have the name "bot" somewhere in the username. Bgwhite (talk) 20:23, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Valérie Donzelli Changes

chronophoto, looks like Arjayay already beat me to it. There are some "problems". We can't use Wikipedia as a reference. Wikipedia is unreliable because anyone can edit. There is no need to add links to the French Wikipedia version of an article when one already exists in English. IMDb is also unreliable because anyone can edit, so its best not to use that as a link too. It can however be used in the external links section. Bgwhite (talk) 18:13, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

Automotive lighting

Hello, Bgwhite. I come to respectfully object to the blind-revert (looks like the automated revert with the Twinkle) you have done on the Automotive lighting article. You gave the reason in the edit summary, "unexplained removal of referenced material". I think you have maybe taken not a close enough look at the editwork you reverted. In it, I addressed the template/tag issues, I removed the unverifiable and questionable material (some with very old "citation needed" tags), I replaced the stroudy image with the clear image, and, the important part, I added good WP:RS refs as well as cleaning up some strange kind of formatting on some of the existing refs (e.g., the ISO symbols). Of course I don't say I made the article perfect, and maybe I might have introduced the new problems (for example, my English is not a native level). I respectfully ask if you find the new problem, please just fix it or tag it, instead of just blind/auto-revert the whole productive edit thus deleting much new improvement and referenced material, whether the editor has the IP or the logged-in name. 24.87.84.143, careful with accusations when you don't know your way around here. Twinkle does not do reverts. It was not an automated revert.
You did remove valid references. You did change and broke valid references. You broke some other things too. You removed sourced content. You did add some good material and refs. It is hard to separate the wheat from the chaff when there is one huge edit. Instead of making one huge change, you should break it up into smaller chunks. Hello, friend. Thank you for pointing to the references I did remove. I have replaced them (and fixing one that was rotten and no longer worked). I have also taken away the pure WP:OR fancy stories about the possible maybe future of the distributive lighting systems (swivel driving lights on mirrors, etc) that were not supported by any of the references and, according to my deep and broad search, are not supported by any evidence anywhere. They were added to the article long, long ago and never had any support at all. This is the example of "questionable/unsupported material may be removed", so I removed it, a valid thing for an editor to do on the Wikipedia. That is the explanation for the material removal.
Now, excuse me please: I did not make the accusation at you. I made the objection. I am sorry if I did not fully make the success, but I do also object to the quickness you assume I "don't know my way around here", maybe because I have the IP instead of the login name (then you don't really know my contributions history on the Wikipedia going back how many years), and the way you revert/sweep away the valid contributions that are including the addition of the new valid refs because you don't like some other part of the edit. At the same time, you do exactly the thing what you say you don't like (remove the valid refs and the valid material from the article). I do not want to fight, that is not why I am here. Recent software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf19) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on March 20. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on March 25, and all Wikipedia wikis on March 27 (calendar).

VisualEditor news

  • You can now double-click or press the ↲ Enter key on an image or template to change its settings. [29] [30]
  • Pages that don't exist will now show as red links in the edit mode. [31]
  • You will no longer be able to try to use VisualEditor on pages translated using the Translate extension, and you will see a warning if you try to edit pages marked for translation. [32]
  • You will now see a full warning, including the most recent log entry, when you try to edit protected pages with VisualEditor. [33]

Future software changes

  • Typography Refresh will be enabled for test wiki and MediaWiki.org users who use the Vector skin on March 27. For users on non-Wikipedia wikis, it will be enabled on April 1, and for Wikipedia users on April 3. If you don't use Vector as your skin, you will not be affected.

Your motives on Russians

What was your motive? Was the distribution of images or the size itself? Initially I thought it was the size that you didn't tolerate because you referred to readers with poor eyesight. But after you mentioned that the Ukrainians page also used the method you were proposing, it seemed that it was the distribution used that you were changing. Khazar, the reason I came to the article was to change the kludge to the template and not the size of the images. The kludge is really ugly to deal with, but it was the only way to add multiple photos. I copied the template from another article that had three photos in a row, which is why the size and layout of the photos were done that way.
I personally think the photos you had were too small. I'd rather be able to see the images clearly rather than have more quantity of photos. However, you don't have to do that. I'm not going to revert or question whatever layout you think is best. This is why I kept saying add more photos. But, I'd really like to see one big photo of Kournikova :) Bgwhite (talk) 21:58, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback. The images will probably be enlarged eventually once I get around to it. I'm thinking the best size would be 75x85 or somewhere along those lines. If that where to happen, then the rows will be changed to three and a person will be removed. You could do that if you want, I won't stop you. Redone the edits to Geocaching without the mistakes

Hey there,

I redid the edits to Geocaching that you reverted. I hadn't noticed in my first edit that I had accidentally mispasted the URL I was editing into places it shouldn't be! Sorry, that was my fault.

I would request, though, that if you need to do that again, that you'd let me know about it! I understand that my edits probably looked like spam at first, but if you had looked at the edits (and my edit summaries, which I made sure to populate - unlike your reversion), you'd have seen that it wasn't intended to be spam at all. (Plus, it wouldn't make sense to spam *that* URL.)

The -ise/-ize Br/Am thing is true of verbs (analyze, minimize, etc.), but if "surprize" actually exists in Br, then it's probably by assimilation to these. Whatever the case, a cursory look says "surprize" (noun or verb) is an older Am. spelling. The Brits tend to Frenchify more, while the Am., like most colonial language, is often more conservative in morphology and sticks closer to the Greek origin -- speaking of the verbal ending here. Wuerzele, as with articles, anybody can change the categories. It looks like you already found WP:CMOVE. Looking at the category history, it looks like the person who added the categories is still semi-active. It's probably a good idea to leave a message on their talk page, including your reasoning. Wuerzele, I also see where it is not listed on the WP:CFDS. Once it is listed there, people who specialize in categories can chime in. This is part of the process. You have to goto the page and manually add it. It's not added when the category is tagged.
Before putting a discussion on your talk page, Leyo took a look at your contribution and saw this discussion on the categories. I do the same thing. Sometimes it's best not to have two separate conversations going on at the same time. I'll ping CMBJ so they are aware of this discussion. They are the one who created the category.

I agree "there will still be a need for them to exist because of actual reproductive toxins". Jim Cartar, ah joy, vandalism. Generally, page protection isn't added for one day's vandalism spurt. Majority of people quit after a day or two, you just have to wait them out. Jim Cartar, the So Fresh article is unfortunately a normal one. There's constant vandalism, but nothing "too bad". I don't do any vandalism patrols. If I did, I'd get very angry and depressed. On my normal routine, I do reverts on 30 or so pages a day. It is one of the joys of working here. I don't know what my block or page protection rate is, but about 20% are requests. Checkwiki does find a false positive error. Whitelist is for pages that have false positives, for whatever reason. If I remember right, which is doubtful, It is related to the <<br>>. 22:37, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
