Welcome!

[edit]
Although some prefer welcoming newcomers with cookies, I find fruit to be a healthier alternative.

Welcome to Wikipedia, Block1945! I am Fetchcomms and I have been editing Wikipedia for some time. I just wanted to say "Hi!" and welcome you to Wikipedia! If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page or by typing {{helpme}} at the bottom of this page. Don't be afraid to leave a message! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some important pages that you might find helpful:

But don't forget to:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Oh, and when you post on talk pages you should always sign your name using four tildes (~~~~); that should automatically produce your username and the date after your post (AKA your signature). If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, visit the help chat, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question there. Again, welcome!  fetchcomms 22:35, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Citing

[edit]

For your article, you cited it fine, but you need to use inline citations (see WP:CITE). To do so, put: <ref>Citation info stuff here</ref> after each sentence you are citing for. Then at the bottom, delete the list you have made and add <references />. This should make the citations you had after each sentence appear automatically.

An example of the census would be:

U.S. Census Bureau. (2007, January 12). State & county Quickfacts: Allegany County, N.Y. Retrieved January 25, 2007, from http://quickfacts.census.gov.

If it is on a webpage, then add that as above, otherwise just leave it out. There isn't any "set" method for citing (some like MLA, Chicago, etc.). For making a section,

==Section name here==

Use two equals signs, name, and two more. For subsections, use three equals signs on each side, use four for sub-sub-sections, etc.  fetchcomms 20:15, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Er, don't worry about this message... actual editing is more important than your userpage.  fetchcomms 23:25, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel Block

[edit]

I have cleaned it up some, but if you could find some more sources so as to establish his notability, per WP:N, that would be excellent.  fetchcomms 23:39, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure where the photos are... but if you could just do the same inline citing as before, that would be all. Thanks!  fetchcomms 22:21, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Pair_of_Sauceboats,_ca._1765.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Pair_of_Sauceboats,_ca._1765.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 20:59, 31 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have now got my new article up for approval. It's Mungo Mackay. And the jpeg of the Sauce Boats is now part of the article. So it's no longer an orphan. Remove your deletion warning please. Thanks for the reminder. Block1945 (talk) 18:59, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mungo Mackey

[edit]

Hello. I just stopped by to congratulate you on the very nice article you've written about Mungo Mackay. Of course there's always something a reviewer can find to complain about. So I have a couple of minor things I noticed: first one is that when citing a book it's best to put in page numbers that you're referring to (or even a chapter if that's easier) to help anyone looking for the material and background; the second one is that Wikipedia, being an encyclopedia, aims for, let's be honest, a rather dull style. It's generally thought best to avoid "we" and "us" and even "one". You'll have noticed that the sauce boat picture was deleted. When it comes to pictures, things tend to be very automated and ruthless. And we tend to be really quite restrictive about what kind of copyrighted pictures can be used. Basically, if you could go somewhere and take a picture yourself (or ask someone to do it for you), then we say that that is what we should do and that a copyrighted picture isn't really acceptable in that case. So, no more sauceboats I'm afraid. If you know where the originals are, it could be that we can find a brave volunteer to go and photograph them. Let me know if you do. And if you have any questions about images, you can either try Wikipedia:Media copyright questions or you can ask me if you like (but I'm more likely to be wrong). Again, thanks for contributing this fine article. Very best regards, Angus McLellan (Talk) 01:56, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
