What Sparked my interest in WikiProject Systems[edit]

I had a question about fish vision and thought that the topic Sensory Systems would be a kind of major topic that organized knowledge around both biological and artificial "sensory systems." On reaching the page, I was puzzled by reading a description of "sensory systems" from only a physiological standpoint.

But then, I wondered whether my viewpoint was a matter of discussion rather than fact. My question is: being very new to Wikipedia, how do I begin? Do I "be bold" and start editing the page (not my first choice) or do I begin a discussion on the page? Bmarmie (talk) 02:06, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I have taken a look at the sensory system, which seems to be focussed on the Human sensory system, but I am not quiet sure what you mean. Where you expecting to find information about biological sensory systems and/or artificial sensory systems, and do you want to start add this info in that article!? -- Mdd (talk) 12:30, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is a good thing you made a sandbox and a draft verson first. But I am quiet sure what your intentions are. Do you want to create a more general article about sensory systems? Yes, you are correct. I want to create a more general article about sensory systems. One that fits into the broader "Systems" context by describing both the environment of sensory systems and the organism-environment interaction. Also, I want to capture the idea that many robots possess sensory systems (e.g., Rodney Brooks work) and that the common purpose shared by all sensory systems is that they allow some "thing" (biological or artificial) to exchange energy with their environment in order to enable action.-- Bmarmie (talk) 21:39, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok suppose we want to create a more general article about sensory systems. I can give you a few directions on how you can work on that.

First thing is to leave the current article as it is. The the current sensory system article which is about "human sensory systems" reflects the dominant meaning of the term "sensory systems".
Second of all is that this is a rather complicated case. It is easier to focuss on designing a new article about artificial sensory systems and or biological sensory systems.
In the end the easiest format to connect these two, three (or more) articles is a common disambiguation page, see also Wikipedia:Disambiguation

One thing you should do any way is create a "see also" section in your draft version and add their all current Wikipedia articles about this subject. Ok. Questions? -- Mdd (talk) 21:58, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That will do 2 things for me, 1) set me on the path of seeing what is already in Wikipedia, and 2) help me organize my article around concepts.
