Literary Criticism

[edit]

Hi.

Depending on your opinion of/tolerance for Ayn Rand, you might find her Romantic Manifesto and her posthumous The Art of Fiction interesting reading. (Both books originated in the 1960's, so very recent literature will be missed, and modernism/postmodernism is given short shrift). The first book is a collection of essays on aesthetics, not all focused solely on literature, but commenting on naturalism versus romanticism, from Victor Hugo to Mickey Spillane.

The second book is a transcript of a ten part lecture series on fiction writing. It goes into detailed criticisms of good and bad writing, with excerpts from authors like Thomas Mann and Sinclair Lewis. The principles apply today. If you benefit from those works there are also academic works like What Art Is and others.

Vandal you blocked

[edit]

The vandal you recently blocked has been vandalizing pages related to the Kuwaiti and Omani royal families consecutively for the last four days with several different IP addresses, adding the same meaningless phrase every time. They change their IP every time they reach a certain number of warnings. Would it be feasible to impose a longer block on this user, and would this even be effective on an IPv6 address? I'm unsure at this point whether to request multiple page protection, provided that all the vandalism is coming from one user. Elspamo4 (talk) 00:54, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Victor Ponta image

[edit]

You probably don't know this but you should not be re-creating the same image that is available on commons under a different name, and in a lower quality, the image is automatically cascade-protected once added to the ITN template..the only time images are brought over to enwiki is when it would stay on the main page for a while, most images do not stay longer than 3 days ..If people started bringing images from commons over to enwiki everytime it was used on the main page, we would be filled with low-res duplicates on enwiki..--Stemoc 11:38, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Right now the Main Page is outbalanced. Can you restore the St Vincent elections? --George Ho (talk) 01:40, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind. The Page is already updated, and it is balanced. George Ho (talk) 00:04, 19 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps we'll let fate decide. I previewed the Next Day Main Page, and the left side will outbalance the right. Of course, there are newer nominations, but they are very unlikely to reach consensus. A tag has been placed on File:Bouteflika (Algiers, Feb 2006) cropped.jpeg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. IagoQnsi (talk) 20:31, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't want to spam your talk page, so I'll stop posting speedy deletion warning tags, but I'm CSD tagging a bunch of old temporary main page images that never actually got deleted. You can check my contributions if you really wanna see all the images I'm tagging. Cheers, IagoQnsi (talk) 20:53, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request to re-evaluate article deletion based on notability for Joseph Atwill

[edit]

I would like to appeal a decision made in 2007, that Joseph Atwill fails to meet Wikipedia notability criteria. Here is the original decision record:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Joseph_Atwill

Since this decision, Atwill has continued to accumulate references in reputable sources as well as individual blogs, and his book was translated into German and published by Ullstein Buchverlage. Contrary to the original decision, Ulysses Press is also a reputable publisher in the field of spirituality. Atwill's book, Caesar's Messiah, continues to be a best-seller in its category, and it is covered in an article in German Wikipedia. While many reviews are negative, the importance of his work is in some ways vindicated by the vehemence of the replies.

He has also published another book, "Shakespeare's Secret Messiah", through CreateSpace. In Atwill's view, the greater revenues from self-publication outweigh the importance of any reputability criteria that Wikipedia might establish -- but every effort has been made to ensure a quality product.

Here are links to secondary sources on Atwill's work, at varying quality levels.

Good Day, and may the Schwartz be with you. The above referenced page appears to be an advertisement for an offshore vendor, with a trade name masquerading as a product type, whereby the vendor or surrogate appears to seek some free exposure courtesy of Wikipedia but cannot trouble himself to come up with any sort of back-up, like product or application photos, outside references etc. There was also a firestop product by this name some years ago out of BC, as I recall, which seems to be rather different from the subject matter of this article. I thought I'd nominate Firesleeve for deletion. The authors have had plenty of time to put meat on this bone but have not done so. Normally, I am an inclusionist, not a deletionist, but pure product advertising is a tad much, even for me. I have no idea how to nominate an article for deletion, so I am asking your assistance, Oh Mightiest of Queens. All the best, --Achim Hering (talk) 00:12, 5 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I've opened a GAR on the Industrial Revolution article for which you are or have been a significant contributor. I have concerns that it does not quite meet current GA criteria regarding a number of issues, including layout, image use, and inline citations, and that length, prose, and use of external links also need discussing. Following the guidelines at Wikipedia:Good article reassessment, I'm letting you know in case you're interested in helping to resolve the concerns, though you are under no obligation to do anything. ASL Hungary Flight 7332 and aviation template

[edit]

I think your actions are highly inappropriate. You closed an AFD after 4 days as WP:SNOW and its hardly a show with two editors arguing keep. Note- I nominated the crash article for deletion. Your actions before hand at the yearly templates verged on edit warring. The consensus of the WikiProject Aviation is that any article with a existing article can go in the templates. A article at AFD remains in the templates till the AFD is closed.

IMHO you improperly closed a AFD. You may have violated WP:INVOLVED because of your actions at the template which clearly mark you as unbiased so far whether a AFD should be closed or not. See you at ANI....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 12:34, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I first removed the link to the article from the template because I saw no reason to think the article had any realistic hope of surviving the AfD and therefore was about to close the discussion in the first place, per WP:SNOW. My net connection comes and goes, so I was planning to close the discussion slightly later when my connection was more stable, which I indeed did within a couple of hours, as closing an AfD was a more complicated process than simply removing the link. It was a simple administrative job but perhaps my edit comments weren't detailed enough, but I am not involved in this matter; I simply have noticed the AfD while passing by. The number of editors arguing keep are irrelevant as it is not a vote. The only rationale they've offered is that it is "not really that common," which is, frankly, absurd. But you know what, if you'd like to have a fresh set of eyes to look at it, please feel free to try at AN/I. --BorgQueen (talk) 13:00, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, BorgQueen. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi BorgQueen.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help in Japanese Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi from Germany! Please excuse my English as it is not my mother tongue. A German text from me would sure be more polite. I just wrote a new article about a very special lake at my hometown: Bucket Lake. The lake and its genesis is documented by film. From the beginning, the lake has also attracted attention in Japan. And so the short documentary is now translated to Japanese by German pupils (see this article in German Newspaper). I would be very happy if you could start at least a stub at the Japanese Wikipedia. The article Monster Girl has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Complete WP:FANCRUFT, no indication of notability whatsoever.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time, and that you have not been inactive from administrative tasks for a five year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. Further, following a community discussion in March of 2018, administrators suspended for inactivity who have not had any logged administrative activity for five years will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. — JJMC89 bot 00:05, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I really don't know a lot of admins right now. I am glad you are back. There seems that anyone that is an administer is pretty busy. I hope you can help me. I check my stats probably once a month to check the info. I am having a problem. I was startled to see that 9,000 edits of mine have been deleted. The last time I looked at my reverts a year ago the number under a couple hundred. First of all can you see these of these reversions? I am concerned at this point that there might be an ongoing issue. If there are thousands of reversions that I don't know about I won't really be able to understand and prevent any future er specific issues. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well BQ. MarnetteD|Talk 17:23, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.
