BC/AD vs. BCE/CE[edit]

Hi,

A user asked me not to change CE to AD and stated, "date formats should be left the way the original creator intended them to be."

Hasn't BC/AD been the original format for the last 2,000 years? Why this historical revisionism?

Best regards,

September Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Mediation_Cabal/Cases/2006-04-27_Dead_Kennedys[edit]

Dear Bottesini, you're on break, so I'm not sure how to proceed. But anyway, in accordance with your verdict, 2006-04-27_Dead_Kennedys, an attempt was made to reach a compromise on the following articles: Dead Kennedys, California Uber Alles, Holiday in Cambodia, East Bay Ray, Alternative Tentacles, Live at the Deaf Club, Jello Biafra. With much difficulty, a few facts were left to stand to balance the partisan viewpoint, but it is not much and new negative material keeps being added, keeping the articles negative and unbalanced. These articles are about living people and clearly violate Wikipedia’s NPOV policy and Biographies of Living Persons policy regarding negative material. Wikipedia is being used to promote Biafra’s agenda by his fans. (The Jello Biafra page continues to have irresponsible libelous statements up regarding Decay Music and Provident Financial based solely on a biased press release.[1]) Three compromise offers were made, see below, but they were turned down by Lgagnon, CJ Marsicano, and Rsm99833. There appears to be no alternative but to have the above articles stubbed and a NPOV rewrite done according to your verdict. Thank you. - Bob 18:03, 13 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Compromises offered, from Talk:Dead_Kennedys#Compromise_Failing:

Another way to end this battle over negative material is to remove all the negative material, ON BOTH SIDES, leave a simple and short statement about the trial outcome, and leave the back and forth to the blogs and chat rooms, here it is supposed to be an encyclopedia. - Bob 23:55, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
If I email Dead Kennedys and can get them to show the backs of the checks, will you three, CJ Marsicano, Lgagnon and Rsm99833, agree to my compromise and agree that Biafra is a very unreliable source, to say the least, and then work to set the Wikipedia record straight? What do you think? - Bob 01:57, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
However, if you [addressing CJ Marsicano], Lgagnon and Rsm99833 also recuse yourselfs, I would to. Maybe we could give some room for other people to have a go at it for a while, what do you folks say? - Bob 19:45, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Kevin Parratt[edit]

Hello Bottesini,

You helped me some time ago relating to an article about 'Kevin Parratt' which has now disappeared levaing a dead reference in the article 'Gouache'. Can you help me restore the blanking someone has done?

Regards,

Oliver Naturalhomes

I've checked the criteria for natability and he passes so I have restorred the article. Thanks for your help. Naturalhomes

Just a note for this situation - please do not advise people to recreate deleted articles from mirrors. First, its important to check why the article was deleted and second, if an article merits being in Wikipedia, for GFDL compliance the article needs to be undeleted so we maintain the editing history. But you did modify it, right? Can you tell me exactly what you did to the painting? (What photo editor did you use? What modifications did you make? etc.)--Ed Trick? or Treat? 01:32, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You are in fact the "artist" of the image, since a reproduction of an artwork does not produce a new copyright. The only thing you can't do is take the actual painting in Chicago (that's where I live!) and deface it with the EA logo.  ;) Anywat, it's your "property", so you can list it under something other than fair use.--Ed Trick? or Treat? 02:41, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh no! Did my putting it up because I loved it make you decide to delete it? :-( — Editor at Large(speak) 03:11, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tell me about it. It's good that we're trying to protect the original creator's work (I'd hate it if someone posted something of mine and claimed it as their own or used it without my knowledge), but for something like the Coffee Lounge picture... it's just for fun! November Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Mark as stub[edit]

I think the article on the North Central Correctional Institute should be marked as a stub. I am not, however, sure what type of stub this should be marked as; could you provide some insight?

(I'm hoping for this to be a chance for me to learn something more so than to critique that article) NMajik 00:32, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, I can't think of any reason not to delete it. I wasn't sure if it should have been a prison stub because it had mentioned it was a hospital. Thanks for the clarification!
