William Orange[edit]

Hi Bridgetfox, thanks for expanding William Orange. I've further added to it. Are you interested in receiving some feedback in how your contributions could be improved (with respect to referencing and close paraphrasing)? If yes, please say so and I'm happy to mentor you / pass on some tips. Schwede66 18:57, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tips are always good, for all of us :-) Bridgetfox (talk) 19:26, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Some editors are not appreciative of advice, so I usually ask first whether they even want to know. With respect to referencing, I suggest you make use of the cite tool that appears when the edit window is open. On the right hand side of the toolbar, it says 'Cite'. Click on it. You'll then have a second toolbar underneath, with 'Template' on the left. When you want to add a reference, have the cursor in the right place, click on 'Template' and choose the most appropriate option. From then on, it's a case of filling out a form. The field 'Ref name' at the bottom of that form is important; if you want to use the same reference again, it is provided to you via 'Named references' with the name you gave it there. Generally, if you write a new paragraph, you'd also give it a reference, and this is the easiest way to repeat it. Doing all of this avoids the problems created through bare URLs.
Other than that, I recommend that you read up on close paraphrasing, as some of the Orange article was too close to the DNZB source. If you have any queries or would like to have things explained in more depth, please say so. Schwede66 20:09, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you - I appreciate both the advice and the polite, unpatronising way in which you give it. I will try and follow these suggestions in future! Bridgetfox (talk) 22:22, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No trouble. One other thing is that most users would archive talk page items, rather than delete them. Please see WP:BLANKING. The rationale is that it is much easier to get an impression about an editor if one can look at their talk page content. You can, of course, always go to the talk page history, but it's a tedious process and gives the impression that there's something that a user wants to hide. If you think that archiving is the way to go, I can give you a hand with setting that up if you wish. I appreciate that it's hard to know this if nobody has ever pointed it out to you. WP is a complex beast. Schwede66 17:36, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Good move, Schwede66! I'm sure Bridgetfox has good contributions to make, based on what I've seen so far, and just needs some help learning all our WP dos and don'ts. Maybe you can help restore h original talk page? Figuring out how to revert things when there have been intermediate edits is not one of our easiest tasks. SergeWoodzing (talk) 19:51, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Happy to help with restoring the content (to an archive page), but Bridgetfox will have to say that this is what should happen first. Schwede66 20:41, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have noted and followed the points made, so don't feel I need to restore the conversations. If archiving talk pages means I no longer see the archived content on my current talk page, then by all means tell me how to do that for the future. I do not want to see the items already deleted. Noel Coward[edit]

Hi. Just a note to mention that I reverted your addition to Noel Coward. That is a WP:Featured Article, so information that goes into it must be of high quality. I am dubious that this snippet of information is appropriate, because it seems trivial that Coward merely attended the wedding. I'm sure lots of people in the arts did, and we already said that Coward and Prince George were friends, so it is not surprising that he would attend the wedding. Also, your source was just a bare url, so it was incomplete. Please see WP:CITE for information on what needs to be included, and also look at the other cites in the article to see the styles we are using there. Please feel free to open a discussion about this content on the article's talk page if you still think it ought to go into the article and explain why you think so. All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:15, 20 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
