Vandalism

Hi Bsherr, would be so kind as to take a look at Edward Hargraves? Tried to fix the vandalism but screwed it up I am afraid. Thank you fory our time. Maybe protect the page temporarily? Lotje (talk) 17:16, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

@Lotje: Fixed, I think. Good catch. Thanks for calling on me. --Bsherr (talk) 17:40, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

very useful

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:WikiProject_Wikipedia&oldid=1008836213 - the scope issue was a muddle about 8 years or so ago when some lunatic ideas (probably me) aspects crept in, I have noticed you have removed a vast number of allocations from my perspective - I have no problems about that - the big problem is that I think (I could be wrong) wikipedia has no sense of having a project that might/could manifest as maintenance or some similar term that is an organising principle that most editors seem to have no interest in whatsoever, so probably limited chance of such an idea manifesting in any way... cheers JarrahTree 09:38, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

I was hoping for a reply - in terms of whether it is worth (or supported) for the notion of a maintenance project that might carry the weight of otherwise un-attached to anything categories and topics that could then be 'managed' to reduce the mis-application of something like the wikipedia project tagging of items. Or even an argument against. Here's hoping. JarrahTree 02:21, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

@JarrahTree: What would the goals of the project be? --Bsherr (talk) 05:27, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
when you consider the range of items that have no project scope that can handle the material - a good example of a project that deals with material that is not content per se is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:WikiProject_Short_descriptions
if ever such a project evolved would be very similar to the instructions in blue that claim categories and articles that are not related to content, rather to maintenance of the project - an oft found claim in strange places - establishing a benchmark for assessing and keeping track of items - categories and article space that is not in main space that sustains the larger project.
To answer your question in the rules of the short description project and its scope - a maintenance project would capture and produce metrics and astonishing statistics as to the effort and space required to manage background processes that are not content specific that are essential for wikipedia to work... JarrahTree 11:07, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
It sounds like the Wikipedia:Statistics Department, in part. An overall maintenance WikiProject has been proposed before and criticized for being too vague, so I would suggest there be some quite concrete tasks that one would propose such a project accomplish. --Bsherr (talk) 00:14, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Article history

Please let me understand why you'd implement a feature that doesn't show me where a DYK was discussed, and where archived? Example Andréa Guiot. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:43, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: The nomination is linked from the phrase "fact from this article" and the archive, from the date. --Bsherr (talk) 17:51, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for explaining, but it wasn't obvious. Many times, what was discussed in the nomination will NOT be the fact (changes occur in prep, and sometimes even while on the Main page), and she will be archived 9 March. While I agree that the credit we had so far was clumsy, something almost misleading is not necessarily better. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:58, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: Indeed, you're quite right, it's not very intuitive. If you started a discussion at Template talk:Article history, I would gladly support a clearer solution. I'm afraid I'm not very expert with module design. --Bsherr (talk) 18:37, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
I am busy writing articles, and several planned reviews are overdue. I don't think module design is the problem, just clearly saying what a link is about. Could I just return to before article history? I am no friend of collapsed content anyway, and don't see why we hide anything about a DYK, but if we hide something it should not be the fact, rather the two other things. Where did the stats go, btw? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:53, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
@Gerda Arendt: I don't mind starting the discussion, then. We do have a practice of using the article history template in place of two or more constituent article history templates, so this will likely arise again. --Bsherr (talk) 18:58, 8 March 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, that's nice! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:00, 8 March 2021 (UTC)

@Goszei: Not that I initiated. Worthwhile, though, I think, as a trust you do. --Bsherr (talk) 01:01, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

Change on Ks Wiki

Hello Sir, I noticed your change on a module on Ks Wikipedia. You changed it back to English language can I know why ? Link Here signed, Iflaq (talk) 07:32, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Template:Flaglist+link

From this discussion:

I can't figure out what purpose Template:Crossreference serves. I found it being used with the "see also" link at the bottom of this article section:

I don't see why a normal wikilink isn't enough for that "see also" link in that section. What does the template add to it?

Also, in your reply to me at the the TFD discussion I am not sure whether you were referring to my asterisk idea, or to "more".

I don't think Template:Crossreference would be necessary for an asterisk? If so, why? The asterisk is not linked.

If it were linked to a note on the same page, would it need Template:Crossreference? --Timeshifter (talk) 04:00, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

From looking at Template:Self reference am I to assume that Template:Crossreference also prevents text from appearing in the printable version of an article? --Timeshifter (talk) 13:04, 3 August 2021 (UTC)

Selective transclusion

I noticed your remark about selective transclusion at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2021 July 25#Template:1897 Philippine presidential election results (diff). Would you consider raising this idea at Help talk:Transclusion? I think it would benefit from a wider discussion.

In addition, I'd be interested in your thoughts on the use of Seltrans in line 5 of Government of Vichy France in order to transclude the Infobox defined at Vichy France. The seltrans part of it was my work (though the content existed prior) and I considered the use of a separate template, but rejected it for reasons which might be worth adding to a wider Seltrans discussion. I recall not being certain of my decision at the time, and wishing there were some guidance about it.

In another case, I apparently took the opposite approach and opted for a template, in {{Operation Car Wash sidebar}} (which despite the name, is actually an Infobox, though a non-standard one). Although I created the Template file, the content existed prior and was spun off from Operation Car Wash revision 928150652 so it could be used in other, related articles, namely these four.

Either of these cases could've gone either way, and guidance would've been welcome. Is the absence of V-T-E links your main objection to seltrans in cases like Vichy? I'm a template writer, and this may not be insurmountable; I've played with custom V-T-E links before, although not for this purpose, and I think they could be included, although the functionality might look a little different. Not sure if it's worth it, thought.

If you do create a discussion, please ping me to it; and thanks for your comment at the Tfd. Mathglot (talk) 10:32, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Bsherr/Archives,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.
