Chenrezig

Dear CFynn,

I mainly write on Dutch Wikipedia (nl.), although I started Portal:Tibet here and did some maintenance here as well. I have seen your work and - to be honest - I have translated one or two articles of your hand into Dutch as well :-)

In the past few months I have been working on the Dutch version of Dalai Lama and I included a part on the reincarnations that took place before the lifes of the fourteen Dalai Lama's. I'm not a Buddhist and for the explanation who Chenrezig is and for what reason he's important to Tibetan Buddhists, I wrote about seven lines on Chenrezig that was actually based on Avalokitesvara. Although they are one and the same, I got negative commentaries on this part. I guess I explained from an rather Indian in stead of a Tibetan perspective.

Now I wondered if you were willing to write an introduction of five to seven lines on Chenrezig from a Tibetan perspective? In that case I can translate it and improve the article. It's a featured article meanwhile, so I rather have it good. I would be pleased if you could; please refuse if you don't like to.

Sincerely, Davin (talk) 19:58, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

The never-ending story about Shugden

Hi, I'm just starting another attempt to stop the NKT people from 'taking over' the Wikipedia with their continuous edit-war to promote the Shugden practice. If you agree, please leave a note at Administrators noticeboard. rudy (talk) 13:24, 4 April 2009 (UTC) Chris take a look at DS controversy discussion would you. Why cant we just get all this propaganda blocked? It diminshes the credibility of wiki after all Shutenjawo94.192.139.167 (talk) 20:34, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Thank you

To Christopher Fynn,

I am writing from DPPL, official publishing arm of the Drukpa lineage. While we appreciate your detailed contributions to the Drukpa wiki page, our lineage holders consider the lineage to be "Drukpa," rather than "Drukpa Kagyu." We politely request that you refrain from changing the entry back to include "Kagyu." Thank you very much for your understanding.

Wendy L. DPPL —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.89.241.64 (talk) 17:46, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Dear Wendy L.
Respectfully, in many traditional Tibetan sources and in many modern academic sources this tradition is generally known as the "Drukpa Kagyu" ~ and is considered to be a branch of the Kagyu tradition established in Tibet by Marpa, Milarepa and Gampopa. The contemporary Bhutanese branch of the Drukpa Kagyu also seems happy to be known as Kagyu, as it frequently refers to itself as such. Since in both traditional Tibetan sources and in modern academic sources the tradition is referred to as "Drukpa Kagyu" - this seems to be the most appropriate name to be used in an encyclopedia. "Drukpa Kagyu" also avoids confusion since "Drukpa" also frequently means "Bhutanese". If for some reason the modern Drukpa (Kagyu) institution or organisation headed by H.H. Drukchen Rinpoche, the heirarch of the main Tibetan branch of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition, has chosen to re-brand itself as simply "Drukpa" or "Drukpa Lineage" that is another matter. I presume this is being done in order to give the contemporary Drukpa school an identity clearly distinct from that of e.g. the Karma Kagyu, the Drikung Kagyu, and so on. However, understanstandable as this is, it does not mean that the widely used name of the historic religious tradition should be changed or altered in an encyclopedia article to align with a contemporay excercise in re-branding. Furthermore, your removing from the Drukpa article quotes and references to published sources in which the name "Drukpa Kagyu" is used, as you appear to have done - is IMO close to sheer vandalism. As you say you are from the "official publishing arm of the Drukpa lineage", do you represent a NPOV in this matter?

How to remove a harmful script?

{{adminhelp}} Is anyone able to help me getting an input script template Eukesh has installed on the Dzongkha Wikipedia and the Tibetan Wikipedia removed?

I get no response from Eukesh who (maybe thinking it would be helpful) put this script on the Dzongkha and Tibetan Wikipedias which is supposed to allow one to type Tibetan or Dzongkha by using translitteration - however the script (based on one for Indic languages) may be well intentioned but was obviously written by someone who understood little about Tibetan & Dzongkha translitteration or the model used for encoding Tibetan in the Unicode standard - so the script is worse than useless. It is on by default and consequently this script has to be manually turned off via a checkbox with each and every edit. This is bad enough, but the template also affects input in the Search /Go To box in the left hand column making that useless. There is no obvious way to turn it off there, and without that search box being functional a Wikipedia is totally crippled. (Then people complain that no one is using Dzongkha and Tibetan Wikipedias - this could be one of the main reasons for that sad state of affairs.)

I have suggested to Eukesh that he correct the script - here - but that hasn't happened; I have also asked him several times to remove it - here, here, here and here - but that hasn't happened either. I would remove the script myself, but don't know how to - and anyway probably don't have sufficient rights. Is someone with sufficient rights able to fix this? I have raised this issue at the Help Desk - but they say they acan only deal with issues affecting English Wikipedia. There is obviously no Help Desk or Village Pump for Tibetan or Dzongkha Wikipedias - in fact I am one of the only active contributors there. Would appreciate help to correct this.

Sorry, but English Wikipedia administrators are only administrators on the English Wikipedia ... there is nothing any of them can do to help you with this problem. You might have better luck contacting the Small Wiki Monitoring Team, as they have members who have admin privileges on many small wikis. Note: I'm not an administrator (here or elsewhere), but I treated this request as if it were a {{helpme}}. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 16:28, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks I'll try your suggestion Chris Fynn (talk) 16:30, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
On second thought it looks like that page is mostly dedicated to antivandalism ... so perhaps it might be better to go directly to the stewards' page at m:Steward_requests, though I admit I'm not sure exactly where on that page would be a good place to make a request like this. However I've had good luck the few times I've gone there for help even if I didn't ask my question precisely the right way. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 16:33, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Script

HI, if it is causing a major problem and Eukesh is not responding I'd bring it up at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) and ask for some technical assistance. Regards. Himalayan 14:19, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Dorje Shugden POV Template

The reason why I removed the template was because it's superfluous. If you look at the template that's already there, 'this article or section has multiple issues', the first one is that the neutrality is disputed (tagged since April 2009). This template therefore incorporates the neutrality issue and another POV template is unnecessary. Best wishes, --Truthsayer62 (talk) 18:56, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

The template IS superfluous - neutrality dispute is neutrality dispute, is it not? You have added more reasons why you believe the article is not NPOV but that's simply an addition to the neutrality issues that were flagged by other users beforehand. Best wishes, --Truthsayer62 (talk) 19:05, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Exactly, the issues are in addition to those flagged before and these have not been resolved anyway please do not remove the template on your own without discussion.

List of Tibetan writers

This was a translation, done on request, of the list which appears on German Wikipedia, de:Liste tibetischer Schriftsteller. I checked what I could, but I do not have the knowledge or resources to judge how accurate or appropriate all the entries are.

I also wrote the article Tibetan literature. It is minimal and based on tertiary sources, so you might want to look over that one as well. Xanthoxyl < 16:28, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Mūlamadhyamakakārikā References request

Your request for references is too ambiguous. Please give specific, prioritised examples. Also, be aware that a substantial amount of literature in this field has not been translated into English. However, the text itself has been translated many times. The initial primary author of the article was qualified enough to be able to write in a general format, and wrote the substantial body of the article before WP started going wild about requiring published sources for everything. There is little or no OR in the article, and most of the assertions are acknowledged as universally accepted.

Personally, I am particularly disinterested in finding the sources of translations - I leave it as an exercise to later authors.

Regarding the idea that Nagarjuna's MMK served as the basis of a revolution in Buddhism is, AFAIK, undisputed, and I would not consider such claims as OR. What exactly are you suspicious of?

I can supply references for the translation but not the sanskrit. What to do? Oxford73 (talk) 05:47, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Calmer Waters 08:49, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Taga Dzong vs. Dagana ?

Hello! Can you tell me, is Taga Dzong and Dagana one and the same city? In the Russian wikipedia, we wrote an article on Dagana - the administrative center of Dagana District. Is it right, if I put a redirection Taga Dzong at Dagana? - Sincerely, Impro. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.22.163.126 (talk) 12:31, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Wikiproject Bhutan

You are a member of Wikiproject Bhutan and it is getting to inactive i think we need to do something. We should start a project to get Bhutan articles on FA or DYK. I think Thimphu article is good enough to go for GA rank. But im new to the Project and i saw you have been it longer and you expand alot of Bhutan pages. I want to help improve the project but i want to see if our members are still active. Spongie555 (talk) 04:25, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Minor edits

Dear Chris,

I have noticed over the past couple of years that you flag almost every single one of your edits as "minor edits." Please note the following from WP:Minor:

The distinction between major and minor edits is significant because editors may choose to ignore minor edits when reviewing recent changes; logged-in users might even set their preferences to not display them. If there is any chance that another editor might dispute a change, it is best not to mark the edit as minor.

A good rule of thumb is that edits consisting solely of spelling corrections, formatting changes, or rearrangement of text without modification of content should be flagged as minor edits.

I noticed that you marked the addition of the COI banner to the New Kadampa Tradition page (as well as the notifications on Truthbody's and Atishas Cook's pages) as merely minor edits, which seems inconsistent with the "rule of thumb" mentioned above. Emptymountains (talk) 17:20, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

My mistake if I flagged the addition of the COI template to that article as "Minor" - however I did directly notify others concerned -you happened to reply on the article talk page just as I was going to add a note to yours. As for additions to talk pages I may be careless about this as they are not in the body of the article itself. On user talk pages the users are notified as soon as they log in - so it seems inconsequential. Anyway your message has prompted me to uncheck "Mark all edits minor by default" in my preferences. Chris Fynn (talk) 17:48, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, Chris. Sorry I didn't mention it earlier. I didn't realize it could be set in one's preferences. Emptymountains (talk) 18:17, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Nomination of Chandas (typeface) for deletion

A discussion has begun about whether the article Chandas (typeface), which you created or to which you contributed, should be deleted. While contributions are welcome, an article may be deleted if it is inconsistent with Wikipedia policies and guidelines for inclusion, explained in the deletion policy.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chandas (typeface) until a consensus is reached, and you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.

You may edit the article during the discussion, including to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Ajbpearce (talk) 17:00, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Paro Takshang

Look. I told you to ask an admin to move it. There is no use whining at me about misinformation. We only wrote the article based upon given sources. If you know there are errors why not fix them? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:53, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Your archive is in a category needing Tibetan!

Hello! I've been adding Tibetan script to pages that need them per the Category:Articles needing Tibetan script or text. Your talk archive appears in that list. In order to keep an up-to-date list of articles needing Tibetan, would you mind removing the category from your archive – perhaps by adding <nowiki> tags? Thanks for having a look! JFHJr () 05:41, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

It's been a while, and I realized you haven't made edits in a while. I'm going to "nowiki" the category in your archive. I hope this won't offend! JFHJr () 03:03, 20 February 2011 (UTC) P.S. it just needed a colon. Cheers! JFHJr () 03:05, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Help with Tibetan script

Hello CFynn. I noticed from your userpage that you have an understanding of the Tibetan language and script, and would like to ask for your help, if you don't mind. Are you able to read the Tibetan script within the following images: (image1, image2; sorry if some of the images aren't very clear, they're the only ones I could find) and type it into plain Unicode text, so that it can be included in the table at Resident Identity Card#Identity cards in ethnic minority areas? Thank you very much for your assistance. -- 李博杰  | Talk contribs email 04:31, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

nkt page

Hi Chris We dont know each other but both have some experience of the NKTs machinations on the article about the group/ Recently, Wikipedia place page rating surveys a the bottom of each article and, after receiving a number of complaints about the page, appear to have focused their attention on it-User Truthsayer has had his backside well and truly kicked and the rest of them seem t have gone to ground for fear of showing their true colours as dedicated NKT cyberworkers.

I would therefore strongyl urge you to revisit the page and amke whatever adjustments you feel necessary-A WP editor has asked for comments on the articles discussion page.
