Hope Abbey

I suppose that you did not see my previous response about the cemetery. That is that SmackBot only (by and large) dates such templates rather than adding them.

However you raise some valid points about biting newcomers. There are two aspects to this: firstly the adding of the templates. These are not meant to be reprimands or warnings but to encourage all readers of an article to address its shortcomings - and most articles have significant shortcomings one way or another at the moment. In particular the editor who added these tags commented "needs work--I'll try to get around to it soon". The second aspect is the wording of the templates. Bearing in mind that they are targeted at a wide audience, in most cases significant effort has gone into keeping them short, simple, and to the point, and providing links to help pages on the clean-up in question. If you think that the wording can be improved, you are welcome to suggest alternatives on, for example Template talk:Refimprove.

Clean-up tags serve another purpose though, and that is to categorise articles into hidden dated clean-up categories, such as Category:Articles needing additional references from February 2011. These are used by the various task-forces to try and ensure that all clean-up jobs do eventually get done. Rich Farmbrough, 21:25, 8 February 2011 (UTC).
