Deb: great, thanks for your help Cabe6403(TalkSign) 13:09, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

Thank you!!! More questions... *sigh*

Thanks Cabe for your swift response. I'm glad that's sorted. Yay to me!

Also, I keep having copyright problems with photos I keep putting up onto that same page. The same page is an orphan. How can I rectify that?

Thanks, Kamran Assadi 13:07, 14 August 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kamranassadi (talkcontribs)

Hi again Kamranassadi, you're welcome. Lets tackle the easier issue first. To stop the page being an orphan you just need to include a link in another page to Mavis Amankwah. For example, I see she judged for the Ghana UK-Based Achievement Awards so you may be able to insert a link there. Doing so is easy, just put square brackets round her name (e.g. [[Mavis Amankwah]] becomes Mavis Amankwah).
Next would be the image, it's been deleted so I can't see what caused it. Unfortunately copyright isn't my strong aspect on Wikipedia so I'm not able to help too much. I would suggest you read over the image use policy and the image uploading guide. It's likely that the copyright declaration wasn't correct or was invalid.
Finally, a little tip for you, if you add four tildes (~) after your post you sign you name. So if I write ~~~~ it comes out like this: Cabe6403(TalkSign) 13:19, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

:)

Thanks. I've taken that page out of orphanhood thanks to you! :)

I'll look at the other photo thing and try and sort it out.

DRN Talk:Fascism

The new editor who proposed this has jumped the gun. This is a discussion only recently began at the article talk page. There are no great unresolvable issues presented. I reverted this editor's lead change (which appeared stable since 2010) and asked it be discussed at talk. The editor has jumped to walls of words on a variety of individual talk pages, a request at 3rdO (even though multiple editors are engaing at talk), and at the same time this DRN. Several editors have asked this editor to familiarize himself with the process. I'd like to suggest tabling this DRN for now. Capitalismojo (talk) 14:02, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

@Capitalismojo: I've only looked at the case purely from a procedural point and added the missing editors from the listing. I'm on my mobile now but if I get a chance I'll have a more detailed look later today and possibly close it. Feel free to ask on the DRN talk page for another volunteer to do that in the meantime if you'd like. Cabe6403(TalkSign) 14:05, 16 August 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. It's not that big a deal, just a bit off.  :) Capitalismojo (talk) 14:22, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I'm the one who requested an outside opinion. I'm not a "new editor." The entry caught my attention a few years back. I asked my students to read it but I realized it was highly tendentious, even propagandistic. I made some changes back then that made it a bit more historically accurate and then forgot about it. I came back a few months ago and found that some of the same old problems persisted. Briefly, the entry is skewed in such a way that it makes rightwing fascism and leftiwing socialism seem similar. That would make sense to a libertarian conservative (for whom all uses of the state are the same), but it is not historically accurate. Fascism is characterized as statist several times but no mention is made of its ultra-conservative social policies or its violence agains the Left. I think the intent is to suggest that fascism was not in fact a radical rightwing movement and may in fact have been a species of socialism. I have tried to change the entry a few times over the past few months and those efforts were all frustrated. I tried again recently with a suggestion for a small change that would make the entry more in keeping with other dictionaries and encyclopedias online by inserting the word "rightwing." Again, refused. This entry needs outside mediation. This is the first step. The entire first section should be replaced. I recently proposed a new version that retained much of the old but added material that was being left out or suppressed such as the ultra-conservative social policies of the fascists. Again, refused. The only alternative at such a point is to ask for an outside opinion. Then mediation. I suggest you look at the definitions of fascism online. The first that pops up on google is the OED and that defines it as a "rightwing political movement and mode of social organization." Most encyclopedias foreground the placement of fascism on the political Right. Wikipedia should do the same by defining fascism up front as rightwing. Mryan1451 (talk) 01:00, 17 August 2013 (UTC)mryan1451

Hi, again. Forgot one thing. This issue has been discussed extensively already (since 2009). It is not "new" and it is not "unresolved" and in need of further discussion and a tabling of DRN. We have reached a dead end with the entry. Capitalismojo refuses to budge. The only alternative now is mediation. Mryan1451 (talk) 01:07, 17 August 2013 (UTC)mryan1451

Darn, forgot one thing again. When I speak of what is in the entry, I am speaking only of the opening section. That is the one that needs serious revision to make it historically accurate. Inserting the word "rightwing" is just a start. thanks. Mryan1451 (talk) 01:09, 17 August 2013 (UTC)mryan1451

Cabe, Can you and the other editor assigned to DNR with Fascism please take a look at the method of resolution I've proposed on the Fascism Talk page? I proposed voting on a new version of section one of the entry. Please let us know what you think. Mryan1451 (talk) 13:26, 18 August 2013 (UTC)mryan1451

Mryan1451, your proposed method of resolution on the talk page looks fine. Might I suggest you try reduce the length of your comments and focus on one bit at a time. In the talk page some of your posts are monolithic and hard to read. Cabe6403(TalkSign) 07:22, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

CABE, we seem to have hit a dead-end with Fascism. What is the next step? Mryan1451(talk) 13:23, 20 August 2013 (UTC)mryan1451

Mryan1451, discussion seems to be ongoing to me. Give it some time to develop. There's no race to get it done. If discussion fizzles out and no one is engaging see WP:BRD before considering refiling at WP:DRN Cabe6403(TalkSign) 16:10, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Istanbul

Hello. I read your argument, thanks for the input. But it is actually incorrect. Thracian village, Lygos, is actually contiguous with Istanbul. Do you still think it should not be mentioned in the lead or Toponomy? And do you also think I should not proceed to official mediation? Thanks! Cavann (talk) 18:06, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

I stand by my rational for the close. In an article about Istanbul I don't think a fishing village is suitable. Proceeding to 'official mediation' is up to you but I think you'll face much of the same points if its even accepted. I wouldn't recommend it. Cabe6403(TalkSign) 08:39, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Cabe. It's been a few days since I've posted my latest summation on DRN. Yet, neither of the other two editors involved have suggested changes. I would like to move this forward but am not sure what to do. -Nietzsche123 (talk) 20:47, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

@Nietzsche123: I would take that as silent consensus and go with that version which looks suitable at a glance to me. At any rate, after a DRN has reached that age, if there isn't activity every 24 hours it is automatically archived as it has been now. Cabe6403(TalkSign) 07:37, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Your involvement with DRN

Hi there, I noticed that you haven't been as active at DRN as you was before. DRN has been a bit backlogged lately and we could use some extra hands. We have updated our volunteer list to a new format, Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Volunteers (your name is still there under the old format if you haven't updated it) and are looking into ways to make DRN more effective and more rewarding for volunteers (your input is appreciated!). If you don't have much time to volunteer at the moment, that's fine too, just move your name to the inactive list (you're free to add yourself back to active at any time). Hope to see you again soon :) Steven Zhang (talk) 13:13, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

That's cool. I've been writing up an IEG grant and have been flat our with everything IRL (seriously, I need a PA sometimes) and looked at DRN and it was in pretty bad shape. Any help (and ideas) you have would be great :) Steven Zhang (talk) 13:25, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

spam / advertising on WikiPedia

Hey,

I like wikipedia but I hate to see spam and blatant advertising which is not backed by 3 or more real journalistic news articles or legitimate references (as required by wikipedia rules)... Why are there pages with so many links to the companies own website and only one single reference to another site, which is not a news website, but rather a sponsored industry trade journal?

For example, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalara_International_Properties#References

46.246.93.89 (talk) 07:57, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

Hey there, sorry for the late reply. I see the article has since been deleted the G11 criteria for speedy deletion which covers things such as this which most likely contained blatant advertising. In the future, feel free to tag an article like that yourself if you believe it to be fitting the criteria. If you're not sure I'd be happy to take a look for you as I'm sure would many other editors. Cheers, Cabe6403(TalkSign) 07:13, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

"Nightclub" entry should be titled "Dance Club"!

Please see the Wikipedia "Nightclub" entry.

The term "nightclub" was well-established (long before the advent of discotheques) as a term primarily referencing what's also known as a "cabaret."

In the US at least, the term "nightclub" continues to refer to a range of establishments open predominantly at night (potentially offering food or alcohol) that exist primarily to offer various forms of entertainment.

Dance clubs are a form of nightclub, but so, too (unquestionably), are jazz clubs, comedy clubs, and many other forms of nighttime entertainment venues. The Wikipedia entry titled "nightclub," which discusses only dance clubs, is therefore grossly misleading.

The "nightclub" entry should be retitled "dance club," and an entirely new entry for "nightclub" should be created, surveying the range of venues -- or at the very least, recast as a "disambiguation" entry linking to entries for the various types of venues that the term "nightclub" subsumes.

I've entered the above as topic on the entry's "talk" page. It appears that this matter has been discussed under some of the other talk topics, but it hasn't been resolved.

To some extent, the problem may be a divergence in terminology between the US and the UK (where "nightclub" may be taken for granted as referring to dance clubs); the divergence may also be generational (derivative of youth-culture colloquialisms like "clubbing" or "club kids," generally associated with dance clubs). Ironically, I stumbled on this situation as a 64-year-old gay man from New York, now living in California, when I was seeking material on the 1970s disco scene, and the entry for "Discotheque" redirected me to "Nightclub."

Given that my father was a jazz afficionado who hung out at the 52nd Street jazz clubs in 1940s-50s NYC (my longtime sense of what constitutes a "nightclub"), I was utterly shocked!

What do you think of my retitling/disambiguation idea?

How can I most productively proceed in trying to resolve this without gargantuan effort? I'm not able to monitor the "talk" page constantly, and (as a Wikipedia non-member) I'm not sure whether the proper metaphor for what I fear I'm confronting is "major surgery" or "quicksand," but I'd be happy to receive and respond to email: mitchell@mitchellhalberstadt.net 173.241.20.165 (talk) 13:32, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

@173.241.20.165: I doubt it'll change, for why please refer to this policy: Wikipedia: Common Name. The jist of it is that we tend to use the common name for things such as this. The majority of readers will know a nightclub as what it is in the article and not the, perhaps outdated term may be. Cabe6403(TalkSign) 13:39, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Auchenstoshan.png

Thanks for uploading File:Auchenstoshan.png. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Granger (talk · contribs) 16:23, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

Dear Fellow Wikipedians,

Please see the idea at meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Wikipedia_likes_Galactic_Exploration_for_Posterity_2015. Please post your suggestions on the talk page and please feel free to edit the idea and join the project.

Thank you for your time and attention in this matter. I appreciate it.

Hello, I have raised a request on the DRN noticeboard re the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranveer_Brar . The article as you can see has been nominated for deletion. I have tried my best to convince the editor in question about the points raised but sadly instead of being guided towards a solution, I find newer issues being raised and I am running between pages adding my comments and defense everywhere! The latest is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest/Noticeboard#Ranveer_Brar . I have extensively discussed the problem with admins on the wikipedia-en-help and edited the article to the best of my knowledge. In fact one of the admins, +Chess, has also helpfully commented re notability issues on the AFD page at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Ranveer_Brar Apologies if I am not right in contacting a volunteer after having submitted a DRN request, I am seriously looking for some constructive help instead of being harassed with technical and unhelpful terms. TIA Coolkrc (talk) 13:19, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

  • Update* There is another concern w.r.t the editor in question. Not to make a personal remark ,but I feel they have serious problem understanding English, case in point, their reply at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest/Noticeboard#Ranveer_Brar - The editor states "you are contributing/learning since 1 year but your contributions is not indicating that you are really interested in Editing on Wikipedia" - but I cannot see any such claim made by me in my reply!! It seems clear that the editor has misinterpreted my statement. Please help Coolkrc (talk) 13:44, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

Help needed at DRN

You are receiving this message because you are signed up as a volunteer at the Dispute Resolution Noticeboard. We have a number of pending requests which need a volunteer to address them. Unless you are an inexperienced volunteer who is currently just watching DRN to learn our processes, please take a case. If you do not see yourself taking cases in the foreseeable future, please remove yourself from the volunteer list so that we can have a better idea of the size of our pool of volunteers; if you do see yourself taking cases, please watchlist the DRN page and keep an eye out to see if there are cases which are ready for a volunteer. Help with old edits to my page by Qworty

Hi Cabe,

I am in need of advice as to how I can get my "Deltina Hay" page restored. Qworty redirected it in 2012, and I would really like it back. I have no problem correcting anything that may violate policy, but his page is now blocked, so I can't dispute anything.

Can you please direct me to the proper place to address this?

Thanks in advance,

Deltina

Hello Deltina. I've moved a copy of the Deltina Hay page as it was in 2012 before it was redirected into your userspace as a draft. You can find it at User:Deltina/Deltina Hay. I suggest you familiarise yourself with WP:RS, WP:SPAM, WP:BIO and WP:BLP. Additionally, as your username is Deltina I presume you are the person in question so I suggest you read WP:COI. I would encourage you to work on the article within the draft page I have created for you and seek someone to check it before moving it to mainspace in order to avoid having it removed again. DRN help needed and volunteer roll call

You are receiving this message because you have listed yourself on the list of volunteers at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Volunteering#List of the DRN volunteers.

First, assistance is needed at DRN. We have recently closed a number of cases without any services being provided for lack of a volunteer willing to take the case. There are at least three cases awaiting a volunteer at this moment. Please consider taking one.

Second, this is a volunteer roll call. If you remain interested in helping at DRN and are willing to actively do so by taking at least one case (and seeing it through) or helping with administrative matters at least once per calendar month, please add your name to this roll call list. Individuals currently on the principal volunteer list who do not add their name on the roll call list will be removed from the principal volunteer list after June 30, 2016 unless the DRN Coordinator chooses to retain their name for the best interest of DRN or the encyclopedia. Individuals whose names are removed after June 30, 2016, should feel free to re-add their names to the principal volunteer list, but are respectfully requested not to do so unless they are willing to take part at DRN at least one time per month as noted above. No one is going to be monitoring to see if you live up to that commitment, but we respectfully ask that you either live up to it or remove your name from the principal volunteer list.

File permission problem with File:Dreameye.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Dreameye.jpg.

You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. czar 09:14, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
