"Traditional counties" of Scotland

The County Watch and ABC are at it yet again: trying to claim that Scotland has "traditional counties". We knocked that myth on the head last year, when we merged the Traditional counties of Scotland article with the Administrative counties of Scotland article. Well now they are trying to say that the situation in Scotland and England is equivalent, see Template_talk:Scotland_counties#Merger. It is not. I am sick to the back teeth of this. Wikipedia:WikiProject Scotland

I am beginning to think that the Scottish Wikipedians' notice board is not the best vehicle for pushing up the quality of the Scotland article (we ought to try to get it to WP:FA, in order to get into Wikipedia:Version 0.5, or, failing that, Wikipedia:Version 1.0), and the other key Scottish articles. It is becoming increasingly obvious to me that we really ought to start up the long-mooted WikiProject Scotland.

Most of the stuff at the notice board (at least on the bottom half) is actually WikiProject material anyway, and the Talk page is really being used as a WikiProject talk already! The notice board should be just that: for bunging up brief notices and signposts. I am thinking of launching a Wikiproject and correspondingly radically clearing out, and chopping down, the noticeboard (a re-launch if you like). The Scotland Portal concept is fine (but currently mediocre/undynamic content), but in stasis: it needs a good kick up the jacksie.

Whats up? Hi, I'm trying to gather some more interest and support for the Wikipedia:WikiProject Punk music. Please check out the topics and lets get our WikiProject to function better. I've taken an interest in the Wikipedia:WikiProject hip hop and I consider that WikiProject to be better developed. Hopefully we can all work together to improve articles relating to punk. Actually, I'll tell you something that almost did bring a tear to my patriotic eye a few days ago. It is not particularly well-written, nor, perhaps, as heavyweight and researched as it could have been, but the goodwill and warmth of the underlying sentiment shines through. Here is a person who truly came to really, really like Scotland and the Scots (and in my opinion to like something is a far more valuable sentiment than to love something - love is fleeting after all):

I think that I will make a point of it to read more of Hugh MacDiarmid. Have you read the Uncyclopedia entry on Scotland? It puts the nation in a very favourable light, stock-full of marvelous inventors, and an ever-growing list of things which we've invented over the years. Forest history of Scotland (and more...)

Hi. I was pleased to find your note in the "History of Scotland" discussion page, under the section I started on Forest Loss in Scotland. I'm still in Scotland touring around at the moment -- but headed to London and then back home in just a few days. The Scots are wonderful, warm-hearted, friendly people! (There are MacAlister's in my family background.)

I got some first-hand information from an old (retired - due to fishery destruction, we might put it) fisherman in Lybster, in the eastern coast (the south-end of the Highlands, I believe you'd say). The situation with the large-fish fisheries here is very sad... halibut, cod, and other large fish are so few that the commercial fishery can't operate in Lybster and many other places like it. The lack of an effective 200-mile limit to keep the predations of large purse-seine boats from over-fishing was said to be the biggest problem.

I believe this needs to be brought into the article, too. What can be more fundamental to the history of Scotland than elements like the glens and the fisheries?!

We need to find the people who can write these sections, or portions that can be inserted into the sections that are already there.

I agree with you entirely. I believe that the Scottish National Party has some articles about the state of Scottish fisheries, though I'm not sure what their take on it is. I'll check it out at their website, and I'd suggest that both of us look around for Scottish environmental websites. Scotland's IMC is bound to have some information, and I'd bet that the Scottish Greens have something or other as well. Greenpeace will have something, in either a Scottish or UK branch's website. Miwok Set

Hi Canaen -- You suggested a Miwok template idea on the discussion page. I finished the subgroup pages as follows: (1) Valley and Sierra Miwok, Coast Miwok and Lake Miwok. Thank you for volunteering to 'whip up' a nice template that lists this little group ! I look forward to see it. Hi, thanks for the message. I've just got back from a long trip to a country that (although I didn't realise it beforehand) prevents people from accessing Wikipedia. I probably could have made something myself I suppose - don't know how to make an actual userbox template but I could probably subst and edit one - never really thought about it that much until I looked at the history of the Scotland-related pages and guessed I must have been opening a can of worms. I'd love to call myself Welsh but I do feel like an imposter now with living in England most of my life (and being half Irish). Actually I feel kind of flattered if a Welsh person says I'm Welsh but have never really asserted it myself. Perhaps I'll make a "This user lives in the United Kingdom" box or something - I'm confused about my identity :-). I've not yet looked at where the Scotland discussions went but I think I'm going to leave it - might not even read them. My original changes were accepted at first and didn't have anything to do with the England/ Europe thing (at least in my mind) - I just thought it read better but I really don't want to annoy people and don't particularly care what the page says. Re:Galwegian Gaelic

Firstly, the current name was decided after a discussion with Angr. He did not want it called "language" because there is little scholarly treatment of Galwegian as a distinct language; thus the page was moved from Galwegian language to Galwegian Gaelic. Under those circumstances, an AfM seems the only way to proceed. Secondly, moving a page by cut and paste is frowned upon because it deletes the edit history and in this case implies to future readers that you are the author of pretty much the whole article. Whether or not I agree with Galwegian Gaelic language being a better title than Galwegian Gaelic, I still had to revert the move. Regards, 23:17, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

I suspect that the parliamentary stationary office probably has a copy (for a fee). It's generally the sort of thing that's very hard to find though normal means. If it helps your search it's a private act of parliament listed as 'Relief of Thomas, Lord Lovat from the effect of the attainder of Simon, Lord Lovat.' Hansard ought to have the bones of the act somewhere if you can get hold of a copy for that year (1854 or Victoria 17/18) from a major library. Alci12 12:21, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure. I've heard a hell of a lot of indigenous stories about it. Every American Indian tribe in North America, pretty much, has stories and legends about them. So do lots and lots of indigenous Asian populations. I've heard stories from Kentucky, too. And the people who tell them, man do they believe it. I think that Gigantopithicus was around for a lot longer than most Zoologists say, at least. I'm not really sure if I believe it outright, but I don't really doubt it too much. Help with references

I saw on Esperenza that you were having trouble referencing articles. It's not that hard really. This is how to do inline references:

  • After the sentance you wish to reference, use the <ref> and </ref> tags. This puts everything between the tags into a footnoted reference at the end of the article.
  • At the end of the article, add a section called ==References== and under that put the single tag <references />.
  • For example, if you wrote <ref>[http:www.google.com Google]</ref> it would put a little 1 in the article where you put it AND it would put the word Google in the references section, hyperlinked to the website listed in the reference. Its that simple.
  • There are also {{cite}} templates, but I am not good with using those myself. For most purposes, simply citing:
    • the author, title, website, and retrieve date for websites
    • author, article title, journal title, pub date for magazines
    • author, title, publisher, pub date, and ISBN# for books is how to do it.
  • To use the same site for multiple references, replace the <ref> tag with <ref name=foo> tag (replace foo with any easy to remember text) for each occurance of the identical reference, and will group the references in the References section.

I'm all in favour of dull, boring article names, so I went with Simon Fraser (d. 1306). I don't know if you've seen it or not, but [[Simon Fraser (d. 1306)|]] gives Simon Fraser. Saves a bit typing. If the refs stuff above doesn't make sense, give me a yell. I've never used the {{cite}} stuff either, but I know of a few articles that do, so it should just be a matter of copying what they do. UFETA

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Unitarian Universalists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree, discuss the issues raised at Talk:Unitarian Universalists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. If you remove the {{dated prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. WikiProject

I would like to see the project expanded to cover all means of Transport/Transit in Scotland, covering roads and airways and biking and ferries and anything else relevant. Naming isn't really a big thing for me, but I would like to see something more inclusive, like "Transit in Scotland" or something similar. I've finally started on the WikiProject page (still a user page) and there are a lot of Section-stubs as i am not exactly sure what to put in those areas. This is my first WikiProject, covering an area i only know a small amount about but hoping to contribute somehow. Admin coaching, etc.

Are you ready to get started?

The waiting time over at Admin coaching is long (some people have been waiting in line since July). I'm an admin coach with the project, and for my students I set up a group discussion page so that we could all learn from each other. The scope of this concept has expanded into the Virtual classroom, which is an open forum for the teaching and learning of advanced Wikipedia skills.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to participate, as a student, as a coach, or both. Every week or two a new major topic of discussion or classroom assignment is introduced, usually with a guest writer who presents his or her expertise on the current subject and who remains on hand to answer questions. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the discussions, such as sharing your expertise, asking and answering questions, etc.

The current topic of discussion is vandalism, and our guest writer is Budgiekiller.

All discussions are open-ended, so all previous discussion topics and classroom assignments are still there for viewing and further participation. There are also sections for posting miscellaneous topics and questions, requesting coaching assistance, etc.

In addition to inviting those who would like to learn, I routinely invite experts from all over Wikipedia to come and contribute for the benefit of all. The VC is rapidly turning into a clearing house of the best resources, methods, and techniques known for working on Wikipedia.

You are cordially invited to participate.

Your advice

Well, I'm getting ready to make the big jump and I'm asking all the vegans I know for a bit of advice on nutrition. I asked a lot of my real-life friends about what if any vitamins they take and most of them don't take any, which doesn't sound too great to me considering all the stuff I've read. Do you take any vitamins or minerals (like B12, A, iodine etc?). I've also heard something about flax seed oil and omega fatty acids. Any help would be great. Thanks. Thanks for the help. I was looking at multivitamins today in Raley's and all of them that I saw had at least one non-vegetarian ingredient (usually gelatin and/or fish derived stuff). Grrr. Where can you get vegan mulitvitamins? And why the heck is the lowest dosage of B12 pills 500 mcg when that is about 1660% of the recommended daily value? Is it hard to absorb or something? Oh, and how important is the calcium one? My mom was thinking that would be a big problem, but aren't there lots of veggies with calcium like broccoli? Ok, well, thanks for the help. WP Prussia

Welcome to WP Prussia. The project page itself is a little bare, since I have spent most of my efforts on its parent Former Countries project - but most of the guidelines for the Former Countries project also hold for the Prussian project.

As you commented on the Prussia talk page, it is very important that this main article be presentable. At the moment, it is better than it was before, but it could be better. Some attempt has been made to come up with a broader layout for the Prussian articles (see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Prussia#Series_layout), but that has come to a halt with those of us involved being busy on other things. Please put forward any suggestions of your own and maybe we can get this started again.
