Help[edit]

Hi, ages ago I spoke to you about the Clan Fraser article. Anyway I have recently been banned from wiki for uploading images with the incorrect copyright status. I need another user to unban me. If you could do so I would appreciate it. My username is User:Mjgm84 Thanks, 195.137.109.177 13:00, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi User:Mjgm84, I do not have the ability to unban you. Only administrators can do that, unless it's a permanent ban. In that case, I would advise you to first take a break from Wikipedia, then familarize yourself with our policies on copyrighted media (i.e. that we do not use copyrighted material). After this, you may either talk to the administrator who banned you about how you would go about getting your account back, or make a new account, and then continue contributing to Wikipedia without infringing on copyright laws. Clan Fraser[edit]

Great article - you've done a lot of work on it. I had a quick look and amended the headings. WP:MOS is quite clear that unless they are a proper noun all but the first word should be lower case. Don't know why and I think it looks weird but there you go. Also, the <ref> mark should be placed without a space after the text. I've fixed a few and there are probably more. WP:CITE provides guidelines for the refs. They suggest e.g. Grant, Neil (1987) Scottish Clans and Tartans. New York. Crescent Books. There appears to be a bit of leeway on this and I doubt the form you use would be a big problem for a GA, although I suspect it would for FA. (Ref 17's format is dodgy btw and there are stray quotes in 4, 18,19, 20 etc.). It's all a bit footery but I don't make the rules. I am not an historian but the article is without question GA standard in my view. Whether its approaching FA I don't know, but a weakness is the lack of references more than the content I would have thought. (For example Origins is un-referenced, as is the poem composed at Auldearn (just noticed it's spelled wrongly in the article). For FA status just about every fact should have a ref. You should use the <ref name=> tag so that JR Harper is not displayed umpteen times. (See e.g. Mingulay for examples). I will come back and have another gander at the content asap. In the meantime the only things I noticed are that the Lead paras need attention and that Keith is in Moray not East Lothian - and the sentences there seem to be mixed up. User:AndyZ's amazing auto peer review is a great help on this sort of thing if you can get it to work. Ben MacDui (Talk) 11:56, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A few more notes: 1253 'A copy of this charter may be found here'. Not sure why but I think this should be a footnote or a 'See also', not in the main text. It's possibly a matter of taste but there are too many red links for my liking. Clan wars: how were they 'Prevented from battle by the Earl of Argyll'? 'Robert was also a faithful friend of Mary' - redundant sentence? Black Aurther Forbes - sp? I know who Bonnie Dundee is but not all readers will and a brief phrase of introduction would be useful. 'The infamous Simon the Fox was also chief.' Why also? 'the Lovat estates were transferred, by entail' I don't know what this means, and I think it should be explained or have a link to somewhere that does this. 'When Simon the Pater's descendants first acquired the Lovat lands of the Ard' - who is he? Aird? 'There is, of course, some cross-over of opinions, Frasers tend to respect each other as fellow Frasers, regardless of where they come from.' Although this too is my experience its the sort of remark that is likely to get a {fact} tag. Distinguished Frasers - if you are sure they are all descendants of Clan Fraser, as opposed to their inferior Lowland cousins I think you should say so. (If they are not so descended they should be removed). Also, whilst I enjoyed the list I suspect that WP:MOS doesn't like lists. Well you did ask! No images in signatures, please[edit]

You are using an image in your signature. The guidelines at WP:SIG prohibit this quite sternly. As a compromise, I offer you this CSS construct: —dgiestc 19:02, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your concern, Dgies. I am well aware of the guidlines of WP:SIG, and I must stress to you that they are simply that; guidelines. They are not law. As such, they merely suggest that signatures should be without images, to prevent long load times. The flags I use are part of a set of very small images, uploaded to the Wikipedia specifically for the purpose of being placed in sigantures. This is Wikipedia, not the Military. If you want to press the matter, I may envoke WP:IAR, which, I might note, is an official policy. File:Icons-flag-scotland.png Canæn File:Icons-flag-scotland.png 08:58, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not going to make a formal complaint, I just wanted to point out a no-no. This is the last you'll hear on it. —dgiestc 15:54, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would love to be adopted. My email address is Special:Emailuser/Alec1990 (Please forgive me if im not allowed to put my email address on) if you want to give me some things to do for me to learn or you can leave them on my talk page :-) Thanks Alec1990 18:54, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Admin[edit]

Hello. Long time no see. I came across your name at Wikipedia:Admin coaching/Requests. I'm assuming that you never got an answer. If you're looking for an admin who could give you a quick rundown, try User:Dave souza. Dave's an admin, and been one for a while, although not one of the most hyperactive ones. Don't say I sent you. Angus McLellan (Talk) 00:58, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Angus. I really didn't get any response besides an attempt at mass admin coaching by User:TheTranshumanist. I will ask him about it. File:Icons-flag-scotland.png Canæn File:Icons-flag-scotland.png 01:13, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Angus dropped me a note about this – it must be admitted that I've pretty much been hyperUNDERactive in terms of adminning, but am willing to do what I can on the understanding that a fair bit of my time is committed to other projects, and it'll involve me learning from the course at the same time: see Wikipedia:Admin coaching/Coaching methods for ideas about the course (which is new to me), and note the standard conditions. that you...

  1. don't go for your RfA or accept an RfA nomination until I think you are ready.
  2. take the advice provided by me and your fellow students to heart (this will be a group effort)

Before going any further, it'll be a good idea to decide what you want the janitor's tools for, and get going on related tasks. From your recent contributions, it's not too obvious: have a look at WP:RFA for the sort of questioning candidates get, and what sort of previous contributions are expected. Maybe time for me to see what I can learn from TheTranshumanist. By the way, I make no claims to be a Celt or a Gael, but am Scots. .. orrabest, dave souza, talk 16:05, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds perfectly reasonable. The most important thing about the janitors tools for me is this: While I primarily work on the Clan Fraser article, and am hoping to get started improving some other Clan articles, I also watch a great many other articles related to WP:SCO, and would love to be able to revert vandalism more efficiently.
I'm just proud of the Gaelic bits of me, that's all. Being American doesn't exactly give you a lot of heritage to be proud of, hah. All of us from the Isles are the descendants of neolithic hunter-gatherers, anyway. : ) Slainte, File:Icons-flag-scotland.png Canæn File:Icons-flag-scotland.png 23:06, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Right. As "wan o' Brutain's hardy sons" (to cite Para Handy) I'm still a bit tied up with the British Isles, but here's my initial suggestion. In WP:RFA evidence of anti-vandal activity is commonly requested, and as it happens I've recently pinched this advice about Wikipedia:Cleaning up vandalism (which gives a lot of useful advice) :
Be sure to put warning tags on the vandal's user talk page (such as {{subst:test}}, {{subst:test2}}, {{subst:test3}}, {{subst:test4}}). [actually, shiny new tags are recommended at Wikipedia:Vandalism.] Add each of these tags on the vandal's talk page, in sequential order, after each instance of vandalism. Adding warnings to the talk page assists administrators in determining whether or not the user should be blocked. If the user continues to vandalize pages after you add the {{subst:test4}} tag, request administrator assistance at Request for Intervention.
To practice it would be good to try out Wikipedia:Recent changes patrol – that page also gives lots of instructions. You'll note that Rollback scripts give you access to several admin tools without having to be an admin, and that there are tools available to help to automate the process. Another aspect is Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion which sets out the process for tagging / reporting articles which you think should be deleted. Try to follow processes through to requesting admin assistance, and it's also worthwhile looking in at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion and joining discussions – meta discussions are often considered in RfA discussions.
As for the Americas, it's rather annoying but your lands seem to have been inhabited long before there's evidence of habitation here – prehistoric Scotland only seems to have become habitable around 9600 BC, though perhaps evidence of earlier inhabitants was removed by the ice ages. So take pride in that past too! .. dave souza, talk 12:35, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Canaen/Archive04, as a WikiProject Scotland participant, please check out this this thread and consider adding the bot results page to your watchlist so we can manually update the New Articles page. There are some false results for the first batch, but I'm sure we can collectively tune the rules to improve the output.

If we get enough people watching the results page, we'll be cooking with gas as they say :)   This looks like a great helper in finding new Scotland related material. Cheers. --Cactus.man 22:30, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Inverness[edit]

I note your recent edit in Inverness and reference to disambig pages. The entire Inverness article is very problematic. Arguably there is no real city. Certainly there is none with boundaries defined by or under statute. Arguably the article should be a disambig page. Laurel Bush 09:13, 31 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Is British Isles (terminology) a disambig page? Or what? I am thingking perhaps we need an Inverness (terminology) article. With respect to Scotland that Inverness (disambiguation) page strikes me as pretty useless. Laurel Bush 13:32, 31 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

In truth I hadn't actually read the whole article. Boy howdy, does it need a reworking. That British Isles page is indeed basically a huge, expanded disambig page. I may be ignorant as to exactly what the relationship is between Inverness the city and the surrounding area; I was under the impression that, as a Royal City, it had limits, a council, etc., all the other things you associate with a full city. If that's not the case, I would fully appreciate any explanation you could offer me. File:Icons-flag-scotland.png Canæn File:Icons-flag-scotland.png 05:31, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Atenco protests 2006.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Atenco protests 2006.JPG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 22:28, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clan Fraser[edit]

Fantastic article! I have gone through the archived FA nom, and it probably satisfies it now. I don't know too much about the FA process, so don't take my suggestion without consulting a couple of other editors, but its still an excellent article! Well done! xC | 10:37, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, I've not done with copyediting. And, on the larger topic, I don't think the article is FA quality yet. It still reads too much like a collection of facts, not a story. Frissell Info on Fraser Page[edit]

Did you include: "The first two sons of Andrew, the 2nd Lord Fraser were thought to have died in the Battle of Dunbar (1650) in 1650, however in reality they were taken prisoner and sent to America, where they were placed into servitude. James and William Fraser changed their name to Frissell to protect themselves from Oliver Cromwell. James Frissell was placed in Roxbury and William in the Carolinas. Together, the two of them are responsible for almost all of the Frissells in America." in the Frasers of Philorth article?

If so, where did you find this info? Frissell 18:16, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You know, I don't know for the life of me where that line came from. I believe that someone other than me added it a long time ago, and I never thought to question it. It sounded reasonable enough. I wonder, because of your Username, do you know anything about the matter? File:Icons-flag-scotland.png Canæn File:Icons-flag-scotland.png 05:28, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, the reason I was interested is that James and William Frissell in America are well documented but their exact origin is not. This story matches family legends but could be the sort of geneological fiction that is so popular and hard to separate from real geneology. Frissell 14:07, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

non-commercial use only[edit]

While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, this is in fact not the case[1][2]. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License, which allows anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial. Signature[edit]

Canaen, it seems you have been asked to remove the images from your signature several times, and I am here to do the same. The fact that WP:SIG is a guideline does not mean that it can be ignored, and clearly states "Images of any kind may not be used in signatures". It does not say images should only be used in certain circumstances, it says they may not be used. Please remove them. Thanks, - auburnpilot talk 01:00, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You, and others, may be interested in reading the top of the top box on any Wikipedia Guideline. It says, and I quote,

This page is considered a content guideline on Wikipedia. It is generally accepted among editors and is considered a standard that all users should follow. However, it is not set in stone and should be treated with common sense and the occasional exception. When editing this page, please ensure that your revision reflects consensus. When in doubt, discuss first on this page's talk page.

I am perfectly happy to abide by Wikipedia's policies, for the most part. And I am compliant with them, generally. This is no exception to that rule. I am perfectly within policies here. File:Icons-flag-scotland.png Canæn File:Icons-flag-scotland.png 02:13, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I found it interesting that you paid special attention to the phrase common sense, because if I was repeatedly asked to remove images from my signature, common sense would tell me to oblige those who asked. Clearly, we have different sense of common sense. Having a signature free from images is a requirement of all users. This comes up much less frequently than it used to, but users are always required to remove images when this is brought up on WP:AN/I. So, I ask again, please remove the images from your signature. You may also be interested in bugzilla:6379. - auburnpilot talk 02:35, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I find it interesting when people attempt to beat around the bush, calling things interesting, assuming that blatant lying will keep up appearances, and hide their insulting words. Regardless of precedent set by WP:AN/I, the issue is still very much up in the air. When the time comes that images in signatures are outrightly banned, the images in my signature will go away. However, we have yet to come to that bridge. File:Icons-flag-scotland.png Canæn File:Icons-flag-scotland.png 23:24, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I see you've continued to sign talk pages without removing the images. Ignoring this does not make it go away. - auburnpilot talk 23:07, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize for not being on Wikipedia to answer your every beckon & call, but sometimes I've more important things to do. You might mind the label at the top of the page. But, with a condescending stalker, there's hardly a need to take actions of my own at all anyway; you'll invent them for me, and then talk down to me about them. Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Honor_Fraser_of_Lovat_Green.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy.
