Guild of Copy Editors March 2023 Newsletter
 
Election results: In our December 2022 coordinator election, Reidgreg and Tenryuu stepped down as coordinators; we thank them for their service. Incumbents Baffle gab1978, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis and Zippybonzo were returned as coordinators until 1 July. For the second time, no lead coordinator was chosen. Nominations for our mid-year Election of Coordinators open on 1 June (UTC). Drive: 21 editors signed up for our January Backlog Elimination Drive, 14 of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. Between them, they copy-edited 170 articles totaling 389,737 words. Barnstars awarded are here. Blitz: Our February Copy Editing Blitz focused on October and November 2022 requests, and the March and April 2022 backlogs. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine claimed at least one copy-edit; and between them, they copy-edited 39,150 words in 22 articles. Barnstars awarded are here. Drive: Sign up now for our month-long March Backlog Elimination Drive. Barnstars awarded will be posted here after the drive closes. Progress report: As of 12:08, 19 March 2023 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 73 requests since 1 January 2023, all but five of them from 2022, and the backlog stands at 1,872 articles. - A community RfC is open to discuss whether reports primarily involving gender-related disputes or controversies should be referred to the Arbitration enforcement noticeboard.
Technical news
- Some older web browsers will not be able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis starting this week. This mainly affects users of Internet Explorer 11. (T178356)
- The rollback of Vector 2022 RfC has found no consensus to rollback to Vector legacy, but has found rough consensus to disable "limited width" mode by default.
- A link to the user's Special:CentralAuth page will now appear in the subtitle links shown on Special:Contributions. This was voted #17 in the Community Wishlist Survey 2023.
Arbitration
- The Armenia-Azerbaijan 3 case has been closed.
- A case about World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been opened, with the first evidence phase closing 6 April 2023.

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter
The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:
Iazyges (1040) with three FAs on Byzantine emperors, and lots of bonus points.
Unlimitedlead (847), with three FAs on ancient history, one GA and nine reviews.
Epicgenius (636), a WikiCup veteran, with one FA on the New Amsterdam Theatre, four GAs and eleven DYKs
BennyOnTheLoose (553), a seasoned competitor, with one FA on snooker, six GAs and seven reviews.
FrB.TG (525), with one FA, a Lady Gaga song and a mass of bonus points.
Other notable performances were put in by 
Sammi Brie, 
Thebiguglyalien, 
MyCatIsAChonk, 
PCN02WPS, and 
AirshipJungleman29.
So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

- Progress has started on the Page Triage improvement project. This is to address the concerns raised by the community in their 2022 WMF letter that requested improvements be made to the tool.

- The proposed decision in the World War II and the history of Jews in Poland case is expected 11 May 2023.
Miscellaneous
- The Wikimedia Foundation annual plan 2023-2024 draft is open for comment and input through May 19. The final plan will be published in July 2023.
As you probably know...

A silly thing
In Special:Diff/1128331148, I mentioned my belief in the lack of Wikipedia:PERSISTENCE in various Elon Musk topics, pointing out the crash in pageviews experienced by Twitter Files. Since I posted that comment on December 19, 2022, the combined average pageviews of both articles in question has decreased from ~11,000 to ~800 (only ~30-40 of the latter coming from the December article) - that's still a lot more then most other Wikipedia articles, but it makes me wonder what the results of a longer, ten year test would be. (I'm genuinely quite surprised by the Twitter FIles managing to stay relevant for longer than a month, though - so it actually probably will pass such a test. On cis people's previous names
A while ago I jotted down User:Tamzin/Disfavored name as part of a radical idea for changing how we handle names, after a chat with ScottishFinnishRadish. I never got around to writing the CHANGEDNAME and DEADNAME parts, but I think what I've written gets the central idea across. - I've been putting a lot of thought into the on-going name discussions recently, normally while building sheds or doing yardwork. I haven't added anything to any of the discussions because, to be honest, I can't decide on exactly what I think is the best way to go with a lot of this. There needs to be some good way to balance privacy, BLP considerations, offense to BLPs, the offensiveness of using a name the subject rejected in life when they are dead, the encyclopedic interest in providing the birth name or other names they were known by. There's just so many factors in so many situations that it's hard to nail down a solid way to handle it. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 18:56, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- As in "Excellent; awesome"?I think the core idea of a "disfavored name" really gets at the point of having the policy in the first place. (I personally think due weight / encyclopedic interest is a more contributing factor then it seems like everyone else thinks, but that's probably fine.) Minor criticism: "disfavored name" is liable to become an unintelligible WIkiped-ism like "notability" or anything that has ever been written in SHORTCUTUPPERCASE. I can't think of any good ways to get around that, though. Overall, I like it! (I do think just extending the current guidance on "living transgender people" to just "people" is probably a simpler solution, but I think the disfavored name idea leads to more wiggle room on the matter, which is likely to help it gain consensus.) casualdejekyll 20:42, 12 May 2023 (UTC)
- I think the problem you'll run into with just expanding to "people" is situations where a name's been changed as part of a cultural custom—say, upon marriage. I recall Masem saying that this had been a sticking point in past attempts to generalize DEADNAME. With this in mind, I've thrown some more thoughts at the "Disfavored name" not-even-a-draft, just to give a rough idea of how one might apply the principle to article content. And I do agree "disfavored name" would become a term of art, but often terms of art are the only way to succinctly discuss complex topics. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 20:01, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news
- Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
- As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.
Technical news
- Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.
Arbitration
- The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.
Miscellaneous
- Following a community referendum, the arbitration policy has been modified to remove the ability for users to appeal remedies to Jimbo Wales.

WikiCup 2023 July newsletter
The third round of the 2023 WikiCup has come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 175 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:
Thebiguglyalien, with 919 points from a featured article on Frances Cleveland as well as five good articles and many reviews,- Unlimitedlead, with 862 points from a high-scoring featured articles on Henry II of England and numerous reviews,
- Iazyges, with 560 points from a high-scoring featured article on Tiberius III.
Contestants achieved 11 featured articles, 2 featured lists, 47 good articles, 72 featured or good article reviews, over 100 DYKs and 40 ITN appearances. As always, any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.
