Warning others re vandalism

Thank you for your reply, but it seems that you didn't read what I wrote and didn't look into the case I reported. My opinion is that we are not dealing with a newbie or random vandal here, so the standard procedure is useless. Lovok Sovok (talk) 19:44, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Do you have evidence of this? If so, Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations is the place to voice a concern, but you need to have more evidence than they appear to know how to use wiki markup. Per wikipedia definition, vandalism is not restricted to inserting f-words into wikipedia. Any deliberate violation of integrity of text is defined as vandalism. For example if one inserts into Abraham Lincoln page a text "[[Cotton]] grows great in the [[Southern United States|South]]", I am inclined to see this as malice. It was deleted under the guidelines for speedy deletion, WP:CSD#A7 as an article that did not assert any significance for its subject. The way it reads at present, the subject is someone who works in a casino, does children's parties, and catches snakes as part of his job. Interesting job, but not particularly significant.
Speedy deletion is specifically for articles that don't assert any significance. I could provide a copy of the article for you to work on in your userspace, but ultimately articles about people need to adhere to the guidelines listed in Wikipedia:Notability (people) or, more generally, WP:GNG. If this person has appeared in multiple, non-trivial, reliable sources (independent of the subject), then they probably merit an article... otherwise you may struggle to get it past an Wikipedia:Articles for deletion discussion. Shonlock redux

You removed the PROD from Shonlock (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) with the comment, "a reference has been provided", but it was a self-published source, i.e., the subject's own website, which can hardly be considered WP:RS … even though another reference has been added, its source is also of questionable reliability (musicremedy.com is apparently not notable enough to have a Wiki article) … since it cannot be PROD'd a second time, I'm considering a AfD … what is your opinion of that, or should I just MOVE ON?

BTW, I seconded the PROD before my IP changed. :-)

It was deleted under WP:CSD#A7 as a page that failed to assert any significance about its subject. Before going any further, have you read Wikipedia:Notability (web)? Innopropriate? You had no right, or reason, the second time to delete it. It was not copied, it was accurate information, and it followed in accordance with wikipedia's policies and procedures. I'm sorry you feel that way, but it really isn't the case. The page was deleted following discussion at AfD: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Itaril. Subsequent recreations are subject to Speedy deletion by WP:CSD#G4:
A sufficiently identical and unimproved copy, having any title, of a page deleted via a deletion discussion. This excludes pages that are not substantially identical to the deleted version, pages to which the reason for the deletion no longer applies, and content moved to user space for explicit improvement (but not simply to circumvent Wikipedia's deletion policy).

Because it was deleted via AFD, then the decision there stands for subsequent recreations of the article, until such time that a substantially improved version can be written. It's too soon for this article. Leave it a few months, until a magazine article profiling the character in some detail appears. Don't take it personally. Propose deletion of an article

I propose deleting the article for Sandra Chapin, but don't know how. The article from Harry Chapin is good, and very seriously is a must... but all the family and bandmate articles show violation of WP:OR and are written in first person... etc. I can see why, since Harry Chapin's approach to music and life as a humanitarian, added to his early death left a lot of fans and family touched and brokenhearted. He made a real connection with his performances, explaining what caused him to write many of his songs... but. I'm trying to clean up the Chapin brothers articles; Jen Chapin, his daughter is a musician, as are his brothers who were in his bands and had solo careers. Years ago someone else mentioned though, on his wife's talk page that he felt it wasn't noteworthy and other than picking a great husband and giving him the idea and possibly being a co -writer for a song, "Cats in the Cradle", I do question an article about her-- at least the musician-work-group-- to be "noteworthy". What do you think? Harry, on one hand, I can see inspiring others, fans, especially, to add original research and wasn't surprised at all the unreferenced stuff that is in the other articles.. I'm trying to clean up "Big" John Wallace's biography some tomorrow- I uploaded some photos to Commons. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 08:46, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

Semiprotection?

I noticed that you've semiprotected Moving company to halt the guy(s) who are spamming links to the Tierads website. This has been going on for weeks at Transport and a variety of other places, such as Talk:Shipping. A rangeblock seems to be out of the question, since the IPs are all over the place (though they're all Comcast IPs that geolocate to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), but I don't think semiprotection is the answer either. (There seems to be no reason to prevent all unregistered users from editing the articles.) What is needed, I think, is for the website itself to be blacklisted, as it's manifestly unsuitable for linkage anywhere on WP. I've been meaning to request blacklisting but haven't got around to it yet. What do you think? Deor (talk) 16:32, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

This was deleted under WP:CSD#A7 as an article about a band that did not credibly assert any significance about its subject. I could place a copy of the article in your user space (I assume you have a registered account?) for you to work on to improve it, but you will have to demonstrate that the band has some notability as per WP:GNG or WP:MUS. A self-released mixtape reviewed by two blogs is a long way from the mark, I'm afraid.

Hi Epee, the reason I rejected it was that there are credible assertions of significance in the article, namely that she is an award-winning actress. This is obviously a lower bar than a demonstration of notability with references, but it is sufficient to stop it being an A7.

Hi Catfish. I had seen that. The reason I believe that does not satisfy A7, is that there is no indication -- credible or not -- as to the nature of the award. Winning just any award is not sufficient to stop it being deleted per A7; I imagine that both of us have won many awards for various pursuits in our lifetimes.

Questions

Hey-- how's the mop? I haven't been well.. still am not. I have some silly questions and so fotth, so here goes-- (I have them listed in the first of my sandboxes, too). Stupid questions

  1. Why do we have a section in the musician's infobox for individual musicians, asking to list past members and current ones? WTH?!
  2. Just because a person is both a vocalist, aka a singer, and they happen to compose songs, does not make them a "singer-songwriter! That's like a genre into itself, especially for musicians of the 1960s and 1970s.
  3. I despise the shells that "nest" the various Wikiprojects together, in particular as a Wikignome. It makes it necessary to open the edit tab there just to see if a photo has even been requested, and I feel obligated to place the {{Reqphotro}} request AFTER the whole nested thing (with date, of course) just to be sure anyone who, like me, trolls for possible photos for articles.
  4. I question the redundancy of the wikigroups that are added to talk pages. Example: a person is born in Toronto, Canada. Then they are raised in Dallas Texas, and move to Charlottesville, VA where they gain fame. If they are a guitarist, who plays Jazz, the talk page has a Biography work-group, musicians-work-group, one for Canadians, one for People from Toronto, one for those from Ontario, not even mentioning people from Dallas, or Texas, or Charlottesville, or Virginia, and the guitar group, and the Jazz group, (the two biggest offenders, so far as I can tell as to stubs created and abandoned with one reference or less) and almost every "work group" but two or three have so little to do with anything I want to throw my hands up in the air, since they all say "auto-inherit" if people are honest about it! If the biography musician group passes the article to GA you can be fairly certain, suddenly the others follow suit. What is the benefit in that to the Wikipedia, I wonder? This needs some resolution.
  5. I keep thinking there are so notable left handed guitarists and bass guitarists, as with Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Doyle Bramhall II, that there should be a Category for them. If there's one for fingerstyle guitarists. why not this?

  1. Template:Infobox musical artist covers bands as well as individual artists.
  2. I don't know if it's as clear-cut as that. I tend to avoid arguments about musical genres because (IMHO) it's kind of an artificial construct.
  3. I don't know much about nested wikiprojects, I'm afraid.
  4. I agree in part about the over application of wikiprojects... sometimes it's useful, sometimes not. Doesn't really cause much harm though.
  5. Yes, this could be useful, I suppose. There's already a list of them at List of musicians who play left-handed. It's an interesting topic... When I played in bands a while back, around half of the musicians I knew were left-handed, but most played right-handed. I'll cobble something together... Yes about left-handed thing. I was actually thinking of guitarists who play the instrument left handed, like Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Also, those who were left handed but forced to learn the instrument right handed, like Martie Maguire and especially, Ringo Starr who to date has refused to play the drum rolls others do since he was forced to learn on a right-handed drum kit. I can't believe some Wikipedians! Reality check

I have posted an RFC inspired by a speedy deletion in progress in which possibly I overstepped my authority a bit and am asking your advice on how to proceed - no harm has been done, to the contrary, but I have left myself vulnerable to allegations of overstepping and would rather nip things in the bud and request advice on how to proceed. I think the main issue is whether the text should be restored to the mainspace while the speedy delete is under consideration, or whether things are fine the way they are. Basically what happened was that I moved the article to user space before someone deleted it and then repasted it onto user space which turned out to be a bad idea because it would confuse people to no end. It might look like I had posted the article to begin with. So - should I just revert all my own edits and leave the hapless newbie to the tender mercies of the undelete=request process? That would certainly cover my butt, however it seems that I may be on to something with my preference for userification. You seem very fair and wise in these matters, and I am quite distraught over the prospect of enduring a round of hostile posts from anonymized, experienced users, not all of whom are nice. What should I do?? User:Chloeburns15/A_Wake_Up_call is the original article. The page isA_Wake_Up_call. The RFC inspired by all this, FYI, is posted on the User page. It would be great if you could update your graph! I think you should just upload a new version of the image at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:NILT NIRELND2.png instead of creating new images for each year. Scottish Gaelic place names

Hi Catfish without the Soapdish, Michellecotter (talk · contribs) has been changing the Gaelic spelling of several Scottish Gaelic place names (eg at List of Scottish Gaelic place names, Cupar and Dundee), including breaking some interwiki links. I've left a comment at their talk page about it in more detail (rather than repeat it all here).

Hi, she appears to be correcting the names as per the guidelines given in Ainmean-Àite na h-Alba. I am not particularly familiar with this organisation, but it looks to be fairly 'official', being connected with Ordnance Survey and various councils, etc. It looks to be a useful attempt to standardise Gaelic placenames. I can see what she's trying to do, but in my experience, Ainmean-Àite na h-Alba tends to go for (quasi-)English forms, almost by default! There are some dreadful howlers on it, such as the idea that the name for the Tweed is "Tweed", despite "Tuaidh" being used in a number of writings. There's worse in there. Thanks guys. I see that Akerbeltz has changed gd:Cupar Fìobha to match the new version of Cupar (but not Fìobh. My Welsh is not good, but my Gaelic is worse, so I won't tackle the Gaelic Uicipeid.
I've gone through her edits, making a few corrections, but if I've read you aright, I think the someone now needs to move/rename these Gaelic articles (or revert the English):

A lot of these are variants, but I think it's important to point out that some of the suffixes are important, e.g. with Largs, the "Ghallda" part distinguishes it from places called An Leargaidh elsewhere. The "mor" (big/great) part in the name for Alloa, distinguishes it from Alva which is "Allmhagh Beag".--MacRusgail (talk) 13:14, 15 June 2011 (UTC)
