Clan MacDonald of Dunnyveg

Hi Celtus, I was wondering whether this clan is also known as Clan MacDonald of Islay and Kintyre? Regards --Newm30 (talk) 02:53, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure if they are called that specifically. Google on turns up one hit for "Clan MacDonald of Islay and Kintyre", so that's not a good sign. If a books mentions 'the Macdonalds' of Islay and Kintyre taking part in some event i'd suspect they'd mean this branch though.--Celtus (talk) 07:53, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, I found a reference to the Clan last night in a old scottish clan book which was passed down from my grandmother. I will add a reference to the article when I get home. The Clan was also known as Clan Iain Vor. Kind Regards --Newm30 (talk) 02:16, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Clan Macfie arms

thanks for pointing that out, adjusted according. I was suspicious and had emailed the clan web site about the matter, but they have yet to get back to me. re Clan Macfie arms: placed all the arms in a gallery on clan page. Not sure how to go about changing the name of Macfie_of_Macfie_arms.svg to "McPhie of Townsville arms". Yes, I noticed that some of the family arms have no name: "ARMS", but the reason I then place them under names, e.g. McIver of McIver, is to avoid the misconception that arms are attributed to names (and not persons), this could invite abuse if I was to label the arms: "McIver arms". Sorry this somehow slipped my memory. I think the best solution would be to follow the Anglo-Scottish spelling of the word, which is shenachie or shennachie (both /ʃɛnəxɪ/). If you need a ref for that, use Robinson, Mairi (1985) The Concise Scots Dictionary Chambers, Oxford ISBN 0-08-028491-4. But I'd still link it to Seanchaí, I don't think the Irish and Scottish concept are far enough apart to warrant two pages. Does that help? Akerbeltz (talk) 15:05, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Slightly different point, since you're involved in a lot of genealogy stuff. Do you reckon we should do a guidance page or something on the spelling of Irish vs Scottish Gaelic surnames? I notice a certain amount of confusion on the Scottish side regarding the fine differences between contrasting pairs such as mac Dhòmhnaill ((a) son of Donald) and MacDhòmhnaill (MacDonald) and the fact that in Irish surnames are spelled apart e.g Mac Dónaill.
