Loveless

If I handle the recording/music aspect, do you think you and Brandt Luke Zorn could handle the critical reponse? The book somewhat glosses over that. It does briefly quote from the original NME and Melody Maker reviews by Dele Fadele and Simon Reynolds, respectively. If you can find those reviews let me know. I also found out about this the other day: http://schools-wikipedia.org/ Interesting idea (god knows no one under the age of twelve should probably be reading Be Here Now which has by my count over a dozen references to profanity and cocaine), but you have to wonder why the GA level alternative rock article makes the cut but FAs punk rock and heavy metal music don't. Can't say we do. Then again, when VH1 broadcast the second annual UK Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony, they trimmed it by an hour and completely cut out the induction of Joy Division/New Order. I've listened to the first two albums, If I Die...I Die and one with something about the moon in the title. More of the arty abrasive end of early goth. "Pagan Love Song" is pretty cool. However, two things always amuse me about the band: their insistence that they are very much not a goth band (when the cover of If I Die...I Die contains at least three indicators that they very much are) and the whole U2 connection. I bet that makes for some amusing family dinner conversations. "Oh Dik, what did you do today?" "Oh mum, played with the band down at a pub two hours down the road." "Oh, that's nice dear. I will certainly give it a check, but I need at least a couple of days before I can look up from WS. If you look at the review page, you'll see how demanding it has got now. I do remember I let you down before. I was going to help with the Yeats, but at that time I was up to my neck in responding to the heavy FAC review demands of another article (it was a Polish subject, so you can imagine the controversies) and by the time that was over, Yeats was out of gaol (congratulations on that, by the way). Grunge

Got distracted by "Hey Jude". By the way, once I rearrange the "Single release" section, expand on the "musical structure" section a bit (realized there I should probably listen to the song again before I add any more) and do a once-over on the whole article's prose, I think that'll be a save. There is the matter of LuciferMorgan's object over removing the cover songs and pop culture sections. However, I can't much on those aside from American chart positions for the covers, so I'm tempted to leave them out. I'll work on grunge music tomorrow; my immediate tasks are that I need to throw in sales info on In Utero and Vs. (in short: they sold a lot), need to work in more about the influence of heavy metal in the background section, and I need to get around to writing the paragraph about Britpop being a reaction to grunge. All these FARs and GARs have my head spinning. There's some stuff I think the project will have to take preemptive action on, but I have to make sure I don't lose sight of my immediate goals.

In better news: visiting my brother for his birthday next weekend and picking up his copies of Touching From a Distance and Unknown Pleasures 33 1/3. Expect much sourcing. At some point I want to post the work from the temp page onto the main Joy Division article because, frankly, what we've got so far is much better than what's sitting there right now.

The memory that sticks with me the most about Los Angeles is that the traffic was horrible. And I don't even drive. Oh, and KROQ-FM had two-minute promos about how great they are. The more I read about KROQ the more I hate it; if you were to listen to them they invented and popularized alternative rock. It's very much a result of reading too many comic books that involve guys punching bears in the face and throwing car batteries at criminals. I did have to take university courses on Renaissance literature and 18th century British literature, so don't worry about the youth of America too much. That entire bridge is fantastic. Honestly probably the only R.E.M. song where I actually can't understand what Stipe is saying (his vocals aren't that indecipherable) aside from the chorus, but I don't care. Oh, her taste is fine but given the type of peers I have it's strange discovering some rather jarring gaps in their knowledge. There was once a poor soul (an indie kid, to be precise) who had never heard the Who in his whole life. Now how does that happen? Many of them I've discovered know next to nothing about R.E.M. and Led Zeppelin. Once had to explain to a predecessor that, yes, Delta 5 is great, but no way in hell are they part of "the canon". While given the scope of my focus I do listen to a lot of British bands, I also have to let people know my favorite bands also include the likes of godforsaken Americans like Smashing Pumpkins and Husker Du. People seem somewhat disappointed when they find out I don't listen to The Cure as much as they think I do. Which, to some of them, means "Listens to The Cure every waking moment". Sure it's empty, I just like punning. I believe there is one FAC on a poem (a slightly longer sort of poem): The Cantos. My FACtitious fear is two-fold: when writing about an individual poem on here, an extended runaround about claims, OR or POV seems almost inevitable. Second, I cannot claim a deeper expertise that might allow me to resolve content concerns. (Disclaimer: I like disclaimers.) Still, thanks for the encouragement, truly, I'll definitely consider it!

Ouf .... You know what ... I now wanted to work on the article, and I see that another Greece-related FA (Treaty of Devol) is nominated in FAR, and will lose the star. So, what do I choose to do?! And my time is still too limited!

Battle of Greece needs some polishing, e.g. there are some interesting suggestions in the last peer-review of WP:MILHIST, I did not have time to implement. So, I must work on that, ask for a last, "fresh" peer-review, maybe a "fresh" copy-edit, and then nomination. But when am I going to do all this stuff, since I have so many things in my mind (having nothing to do with Wikipedia!), and I'm still part-time here ... Even now, I work here, in order to forget other things ... Anyway, this is irrelevant ...

Another problem is my perfectionism (you must have realized that from my previous comments). That is why I nominate very reluctantly an article (and in the case of El Greco another editor rushed into FAC before my own decision!), and still this strategy does not save me from surprises, such as Pericles' FAR!

Sorry for my babble! And I still did not make you wiser about when I'll nominate Battle of Greece! Well, I hope before 2008!!! Thanks for all the "scientific" and exquisite job you did in the article. Rather silly, in my opinion. Shields was born in the US, but spent his formative years in Ireland. Actually, I've been meaning to go through my Loveless 33 1/3 again because when the book recounts the band's career up to Loveless they don't seem anything but Irish. To use a rather quaint comparison, The Edge and Adam Clayton are actually English, but no one doesn't call U2 Irish.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm kind of disenchanted with the GA/FA processes. It seems like, without constant attention, most GA/FAs will either degrade or the standards will change such that they'll lose their status within a few years. It's not really worth the effort to me; I'd rather start missing articles so that notable subjects have a foothold to grow on. It seems to be a more permanent foundation to build off of. Hooky and the boys (both incarnations) are our sole "most favorites" overlap, although from the remainder of the list, the ones I'm familiar with (which would be all but 18th Dye, Richie Hawtin, White Noise, and Stina Nordenstam) I appreciate. Well, except for the Smiths, but that's mainly 'cause of Morrissey. They have some jaunty rhythms, I'll give them that.
