License tagging for Image:Logo 140x105.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Logo 140x105.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 18:09, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

July 2007[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent contribution removed content from 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. Please be more careful when editing pages and do not remove content from Wikipedia without a good reason, which should be specified in the edit summary. Non-free use disputed for Image:Logo 140x105.jpg[edit]

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Logo 140x105.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 01:54, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spamming MTV links[edit]

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam policy for further explanations. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. --JYi 20:53, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are spamming because you are clearly affiliated with MTV/the MTV website, and your only contributions are to add external links to MTV.com. Please stop. --JYi 21:02, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Logo 140x105.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Logo 140x105.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 00:10, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

MTV links (August 2007)[edit]

Hi Chasingemy. It might not be your intention, but your contributions are making it at least appear to other editors that you are here primarily to promote MTV websites. Are you affiliated with MTV? Again, it might not be the case, but this could be an assumption that others here make, based on what your are adding to articles. It might be worth reviewing Wikipedia:How not to be a spammer. Feel free to ask any questions about this. Thanks, --Paul Erik 17:17, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Paul,

I am affiliated with MTV, but I'm only trying to update the content. What articles are you pertaining to? I'm only trying to be a contributor not a spammer. Any of your guidance can help. :)

Thank you -Emily— Preceding unsigned comment added by Chasingemy (talkcontribs) 20:52, 17 August 2007

Hi Emily. Your honesty is much appreciated here. I hope you did not take offense at my indirect accusation of you being a "spammer". I had noticed that you continued to add links (e.g. at the article Foo Fighters) to MTV websites after another editor had cautioned you about this. I think the document Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, which has wide acceptance among Wikipedia editors, can offer much guidance. If, as an example, your edits to articles tended to advance the interests of MTV then we would wonder about how much you were truly here to contribute to a neutrally written encyclopaedia. One suggestion in the guideline is that if you want to make a change to an MTV-related article, or add an MTV external link, that you first discuss it on the article's talk page. (Don't forget to sign by adding ~~~~ at the end of your comments.) The exceptions would be if you were simply removing vandalism or correcting spelling mistakes. Welcome! --Paul Erik 07:16, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Emily. You are continuing to directly add MTV-related links to articles, contrary to the guidelines I have cited above. If you think a link should be added, please ask editors on the article's Talk page instead. The A.D.D. Bio links are definitely contrary to Wikipedia's guidelines for external links because their primary content is a video that cannot be viewed outside of the United States, and this is an international project. I will revert them; please do not re-add them. Let me know if you have any questions. --Paul Erik 01:06, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have now also looked at many of the other MTV links you have added. Again it appears that most of the content consists of videos that are not possible to view for those of us outside of the United States, so they are not acceptable under the guidelines here. --Paul Erik 01:35, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly Paul, I don't see why these links are being deleted. An A.D.D. bio is a very good resource for band information and MTV.com itself features exclusive articles. I understand that Wikipedia is in fact an international project, however the content that I am adding with the external links is valuable to those living in the US. What kind of links can I add then? Thank you and I apologize for not abiding by the Wiki rules. --Chasingemy —The preceding signed but undated comment was added at 19:33, August 22, 2007 (UTC).

Emily, there are two issues here.
There is an issue about conflict of interest. The linked page explains the rationale for our conflict-of-interest guidelines better than my attempt in one of my previous messages to you. To be direct: Please do not add links to MTV sites and please do not edit articles related to MTV unless it is to correct spelling or remove simple vandalism. If you think a link should be added, bring it to the article's Talk page. Ask other editors of the article if they think the links should be added, and then let them do it.
Beyond that, there is the issue of the appropriateness of the links. This page—Wikipedia:External links—is a set of guidelines developed over years by countless Wikipedia editors. Under the heading Links normally to be avoided, #7 says, "Sites that are inaccessible to a substantial number of users, such as sites that only work with a specific browser." I interpret this to inlcude sites such as the ones you have added, where non-US readers would be frustrated by the message saying they are denied access to the videos. Yes, some of the MTV-exclusive news articles might include something new (and accessible to everyone internationally) but I think the way to include them (and not run afoul of point #1, "Avoid...Any site that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a Featured article") is to incorporate something from the news item into the Wikipedia article and then cite the MTV article as a reference. This is in keeping with the idea of building an enclyclopedia, rather than a directory of links.
I hope that answers your questions, Emily. Best wishes, --Paul Erik 00:02, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On talk pages[edit]

Thank you for requesting the external links on talk pages; that is in line with our conflict of interest policy. May I suggest that you identify yourself as an MTV employee when making such recommendations? That would dispel any impression that you are just an interested fan rather than a paid promoter, but would still allow the editors of the articles to decide whether to include the links. — Carl (CBM · talk) 20:52, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Carl,

I am just adding content that I feel enriches the article. The A.D.D. Bios are exclusive on MTV.com but they do give a neat insight on various musicians. I am an MTV employee but I do care about the music and I am putting these links up on the talk pages for the right reasons. Putting the articles on the talk pages gives the editors the opportunity to put these links up at their own discretion and thats why I did that. Thanks for your input though--Chasingemy 21:07, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The wording of your message "Hey guys how about linking to Akon's A.D.D. bio on MTV.com? Its exclusive content and Its a pretty cool piece on the band. Check it out and see if you want to add it to the external link page. The URL is..." does not disclose the fact that you are being paid to promote the band. Its informal tone appears to be intended to suggest that you are an uninterested party suggesting a link, rather than someone paid to promote the link. Moreover, you have added a very similar message to numerous articles in a short time, which is ordinarily discouraged. I hope you will consider disclosing your employer when suggesting links that are in your financial interest, and limiting the number of such suggestions, to avoid any appearance of impropriety. — Carl (CBM · talk) 21:17, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Carl...its a talk page. I apologize if my "informal tone" was not appropriate for Wikipedia. I will do it in a more sensible fashion next time. Thanks and i sincerely apologize.--Chasingemy 21:20, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Emily, you are sidestepping the main issue, which is the conflict-of-interest issue. This has nothing to do with your informal tone being "inappropriate for Wikipedia" talk pages; it is that it appears to be part of your attempt to actively hide the fact that you are an employee of MTV, which is not in the spirit of Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, which I have been repeatedly pointing out to you.--Paul Erik 21:47, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
