Touch not the cat "bot" the glove

[edit]

Hi there! You seem to be a bit confused about the word "bot". Bot is Old English and Scots. It is not generally used these days. It is not a misspelling of "but". It means "without". So if you want to update the motto you need to change it to: Touch not the cat without a glove. Hope that clarifies the issue. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 197.229.142.111 (talk) 22:23, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your message. I can assure you that I am not at all confused by the motto. I know the mottoes of the various clan chiefs of the Clan Chattan clans very well :). I have provided on a number of occasions a 'translation' alongside 'bot' i.e. 'without', and have corrected use of this word a few times on two pages - once when it was used when 'but' was the word used (Clan Chattan page) and once when 'but' was used when 'bot' should have been (Mackintosh page). Others editing these pages have got the precise words and spellking of words of these clans' mottoes incorrect.

One cannot change a motto using a word that isn't in that motto, since the motto is part of the legal matriculation of each Chief's arms from The Lord Lyon. Thus changing 'Touch not the cat bot a glove' to 'Touch not the cat without a glove' is not possible, but showing the latter as an explanation of the former may be helpful. Hi Thank you for the clarification and your edits! Kind regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 197.229.142.86 (talk) 18:22, 21 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
