Reverting without explaining in Arabic

[edit]

Your latest revert in Arabic was not explained. Per WP:REVEXP, you have to explain why you reverted that edit. I dont see anything wrong with it.--SharʿabSalam▼ (talk) 03:46, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@SharabSalam: I apologize as I should have left an explanation. "Most eloquent" is a reasonable translation, but it doesn't really get at what الفصحى means. Lane's Arabic-English Lexicon says that the original meaning of فصيح is "divested of the froth" or "clear of its biestings" in reference to milk. From this meaning, Lane says, is derived "chaste" or "free from barbarousness [لحن]" or "pure." Lane notes that it can sometimes mean "eloquent"; but this is appears to be a further derived meaning resulting from the perceived eloquence of the chaste or pure Arabic.
The central idea of the term الفصحى must be understood in the historical context of the sudden and rapid corruption of the Arabic language due to the sharp increase in intercourse between Arabs and non-Arabs from the time of Mohammed, from which time "it became a matter of the highest importance to the Arabs to preserve the knowledge of that speech which had thus become obsolescent, and to draw a distinct line between the classical and post-classical languages. ... Hence the vast collection of lexicons and lexicological works composed by Arabs, and by Muslims naturalized among the Arabs; which compositions, but for the rapid corruption of the language, would never have been undertaken."
Really, I think the best translation is "most chaste" rather than "purest" because the former implies the latter with the added meaning of undefiledness. The perceived eloquence of الفصحى is a consequence of its chasteness. -Ciringacenjunga (talk) 12:08, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ciringacenjunga, not sure about that. I dont think that Fusha is the "purest" Arabic. It is the most understandable Arabic. Two weeks ago you changed eloquence to purest. I speak Arabic but I dont know what is the best English translation of the word Fusha. IMO, the word Fusha would mean "Standard Arabic" or "literary Arabic". In any case we dont want to do original research, we should only say what reliable sources are saying. I found this source [1] which says that Fusha means "literary Arabic".--SharʿabSalam▼ (talk) 14:16, 13 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
