Return of Quiet Days

Hi Closedmouth,

Not sure why, but you put a notice on my talk page saying "Please do not move pages to nonsensical titles" in connection with "Return of Quiet Days." This is puzzling, since I moved the article from that title back to Kadena Air Base about five minutes after a vandal had moved it. This vandal has been active over the past several months, and I undid a similar move a couple of days ago. Let's unite in opposing this vandal.

Best regards, Fg2 (talk) 21:43, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Buffalodaughter.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of descrption pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Chris.B | talk 17:32, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

I've been waiting for this message since I uploaded that image. I can't think of a reason why it's not replaceable, so it's gonna get deleted.--Closedmouth (talk) 02:24, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Lateral aperture

I might be wrong, but I am under the impression that when an editor deletes a page which consists of their own edits only and no other edits, it is a request for page deletion. The page move that I am suggesting is from "Lateral apertures" to "Lateral aperture". This is to change it from the pleural to the singular, which is uncontroversial, I think. Any editor can make a page move that is not controversial, so in this case, I think, that it need not be a requested and listed for discussion. I was working on wiki pages that have been requested for more than one year, after I was asked to look at the list of Anatomy page requests. Lateral aperture was one of the pages that has been requested, but not sorted out, for more than one year. Snowman (talk) 11:20, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

November 2007

Hello. I understand the change you made to Saul Kaiserman removing the link I put in. I put the link in because someone else created the page and made it a redirect page to his brother's article listing, which seemed silly. Either create the article itself or don't bother creating the page in my opinion. But that's water under the bridge.

My concern is the tone of the post you left me. Perhaps it is simply a template you leave in lots of places, but the tone of the post on my user talk page treated me as if I was a newbie editor making some grossly offensive edit for my own personal benefit. I thought Wikipedia was all about assume good faith. I appreciate that you are taking the time to check articles for vandalism and for spam links. My suggestion is that the notes you leave for editors assume we are not idiots, new editors, or malicious in our actions. Thank you. JerseyRabbi (talk) 12:54, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

I will take up my concern with the tone with the originators of the warning. But the post came from you, so as you use it in the future, be aware that editors that users - or at least this one - don't like being treated as newbies or spammers. Thank you for responding so quickly and for your good faith efforts in helping Wikipedia. Maybe consider altering the user warnings you use to a less judgmental one. JerseyRabbi

About the Hanoi - Amsterdam High School international awards

Dear Closedmouth, Thanks for your notice. Indeed, I did not clear texts from the article but merged it into the main article of Hanoi Amsterdam High school. I think it will be neater if those texts are contained in the article on the school.

Thank you again for your advice. But something wrong happened :D. When I click on the link to Hanoi-Amsterdam High school International Awards, I was otherwise directed to the list of Hanoi National University of Education High school International Awards. I'm sure that Amser would be down a little bit if they know this. I have corrected it already. Chabad related controversy

If you wish wikipedia to have any credibility on this subject within Judaism, you will need to remove this page and split up each item into its own page. There is no reasons to entries on people such as Lew, Levitin and Jaffe when each on their own may or may not merit a page on wikipedia. Judge each one separately, and set up a separate page for them.

Additionally, the title is misleading. Some of the issues there are scandals, not controversy. Controversy implies that Chabad supports what they did tacitly or otherwise and others don't. What they did was simply a scandal for which each suffered the consequence. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.113.50.83 (talk) 18:02, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Stop, Look and Laugh

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Stop, Look and Laugh, and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: Stop!, Look and Laugh. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 04:41, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

User:206.213.251.31 - incorrect TW vandal warning?

I don't normally follow up these things, but after seeing a personal attack left by User:206.213.251.31 on User:Scarian's talk page ([3]), I had a look through his contributions, and then at his talk page. However, it seems that one warning on his talk page, from you, may be incorrect. Specifically, this warning, regarding edits to Flat Earth Society. However, this user's only edit to that article is this, which is removing vandalism. Would you be able to review the edit, and, if you feel your warning was incorrect (I assume it was an accident in Twinkle, rather than a genuine malicious intent on your part - mistakes are easily made), would you be able to retract it? Again, sorry for bothering you with such a trivial thing. --Dreaded Walrus t c 22:02, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

All in the Family dab page

While Jazzeur's actions verge on vandalism, I agree with him/her in one respect - the dab page under its current title is bad. It should be All in the Family (disambiguation). Nanoelionics

Helloy,Closedmouth! Fifteen years ago, when the paper “A step towards nanoionics” was written, Prof. Ukshe E.A., said (before he recommended the paper to Solid State Ionics): "nanoionics" is the curious word and it can be published. Now, nanoelectronics is rapid running towards his fundamental ultimate limits. In such area as the thickness of dielectric layer, it reaches a few atomic layer thick, and cannot shrink further. Fast ion transport at nanoscale will help break this limit, and at this important area of meeting, the nanoelectronics and nanoionics merge in common. It will be nanoelionics. "Nanoelionics" is the new scientific term with a rich future. Despotuli (talk) 08:52, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

All in the Family

I consider the page that I inadvertently blanked out as a useless and frivolous disambiguation page. What made it NECESSARY is the loose translation of an obscure Asian film title. So, if the the title of the new article named "All in the Family (film)" remains as is, the need for the disambiguation page totally disappears. I therefore need help in getting the proper procedure to remove this useless and damaging disambiguation page so that the original name for "All in the Family (US series)" can be moved back to "All in the Family". Thank you, --Jazzeur (talk) 05:43, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Would I be blamed for vandalism if I attempt to move the "All in the Family" dab page to "All in the Family (disambiguation)" as proposed by user:Clarityfiend? Thank you, --Jazzeur (talk) 06:01, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Thank you very much Closedmouth for all your work, which I inadvertently caused in part, after user "Blofeld of SPECTRE" had done something totally useless by renaming (moving) the "All in the Family" article and creating a disambiguation page named "All in the Family". Wikipedia was working fine at the time with the existing "All in the Family (disambiguation)" page which had been created back in July 2006. If something like this ever happens again, I'll go to the experts with WP:RM rather than try to resolve it myself. Thank you again, --Jazzeur (talk) 16:05, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Header

You have mistunderstood the article I am trying to keep alive on Wikipedia. It is not an ad to get more viewers because how could I get more viewers when I'm just a fan of the show? I doubt the creator of the show even knows about the fight for this article on Wikipedia.

I believe that this article should stay in the encyclopedia because it is currently being edited through to meet Wikipedia's standards. Further plans to edit this page have also been established. I believe the article is put in an encyclopedic manner because the article contains information about West Ville's impact on fans of the show and detailed information about almost all of the characters. More details in episode summaries will be added soon as well. Any assistance in editing this page will be more than appreciated. Now you may want this article to be deleted because you may think that there isn't any significance to the article. Let me assure you though, this article is signifant and offers important information that certain people may want to know. The animated series "West Ville" may not be very popular, but it is still an existing animated series with several fans who would greatly appreciate an article in an encyclopedia about the show. It seems like you only want shows with millions of viewers on the encyclopedia, but I believe it doesn't matter. If the show exists, no matter how many viewers it has, there is a lot of good information about it that many people would probably want to know. Furhtermore, the characters in the show "West Ville" are constantly growing. There is a lot of character growth in this show, and I believe it is necessary to record how certain character's personalities have changed overtime in an encyclopedia because some people may find it difficult to stay up-to-date with information about their favorite characters. In conclusion, I believe that if you want this article to be deleted, give the article a change and truly find the significance of the article. Several people would greatly appreciate an article about this show and I would appreciate it if you let me, and all the other people who edit this page continue editing this page. Please give this article a chance to grow, there is significance in this article that you may have not found, so please keep this article on the encyclopedia, and thank you for your time.

Well, I completely miscalled that one. :) Noting how often the article had been created and deleted, I hoped that going through AfD would eliminate drama by allowing clear-cut salting and enabling future incarnations at variant titles to be G4ed. This is my first major encounter with the world of SPAs. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 17:56, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

I know that swirly-minded feeling. I spent half of yesterday in a medicated haze. (Flu, yay.) I do wonder how many individuals we're actually dealing with. The similarities in their formatting is telling, as is the slip where Jennifer18 referred to her own comment in the third person. Peculiar error. :) After I pointed it out, she changed it. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:52, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
If this AfD is the end of it, I wouldn't bother. If they persist, most definitely. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:27, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Long comments

You recently added a "long comment" on a page which had just the {{wi}} template in order to prevent the page from popping up on Special:Shortpages. I've seen that often before but have never found the template used to add the long comment. I'd like to put a reference to it on Template talk:Wi. Could you drop me a link when you have a minute? Thanks. Rossami (talk) 05:42, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Interesting. The comments were so similar that I just assumed that they were the result of a template. Well, I've now created one. I put it at Template:longcomment for lack of a better name. It seems to be working when I test it but I'd appreciate other feedback and corrections. (In particular, if you know how to force the notice when someone forgets to subst the template, that might be helpful.) Thanks. Rossami (talk) 18:53, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

"Nihongo" template

On this edit of yours: Using your favorite OS/browser combinations, when you look at the resulting page, what do you see?

When I look at it via the computer in my office, I see a mysterious and disconcerting gap after just about every series of kanji. When I look at it via the computer at home, I see a mysterious and disconcerting little "i" in its place. Uh-oh, the "nihongo" template.

What's it all for? As I understand it, for two purposes:

  1. It does something via CSS (I can't be bothered to look into the external stylesheet) to suggest to the browser that the browser should display Japanese.
  2. It links to Help:Japanese.

The first seems superfluous to me. Browsers that can handle UTF-8 can do this, if there's a font available. But I suppose it's harmless enough.

The second is all very well. But I wonder how many links to Help:Japanese are necessary. It's not as if there's any explanation of the particular kanji (cf the individualized pages generated from ISBN links); they're just link after link to the exact same page. Gods know how this repetition might help anyone.

Moreover, do you have any idea of the HTML payload of all this? Here's just one sample:

<i>Camera, Eye x Iron, Construction</i> <span style="font-weight: normal">(<span class="t_nihongo_kanji" lang="ja" xml:lang="ja">カメラ・眼×鉄・構成</span><span class="t_nihongo_norom" style="display:none"><span class="t_nihongo_comma" style="display:none">,</span> <i><span class="t_nihongo_romaji"><i>Camera, Eye x Iron, Construction</i></span></i></span><span class="t_nihongo_help"> <span style="position:relative; overflow:hidden; width:9px; height:{{{height}}}; z-index:2;"><a href="/wiki/Image:Info_Sign.svg" class="image" title="Info Sign.svg"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/21/Info_Sign.svg/9px-Info_Sign.svg.png" width="9" height="9" border="0" /></a><span style="position:absolute; top:0; left:0; padding-top:3px; z-index:3;"><a href="/wiki/Help:Japanese" title="Help:Japanese"><span style="float:left; width:9px; height:{{{height}}}; font-size:{{{height}}}; line-height:{{{height}}}; word-spacing:9px; cursor:pointer;">   </span></a></span></span></span>)</span>

While there are plenty of opinions about what is and isn't good HTML, my own is that the style exemplified above might reasonably be called, excuse me, batshit style. (And as for the CSS, I've no idea what kind of value of "{{{height}}}" might mean.)

May I now draw your attention to Shōji Ueda. It's no great shakes as an article, but it's fresh on my mind as I twiddled with it just today. It has a minimum of "nihongo" and a maximum of "nihongo2". It looks a lot less distracting than if I'd used "nihongo", the HTML is a lot less bulked up, and there's still a conspicuous link to Help:Japanese

In the future, could you consider adding "nihongo2" rather than "nihongo" where possible? -- Hoary (talk) 15:52, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

PS The guidance to the browser that this is Japanese is probably limited to lang="ja" xml:lang="ja". That may help with audio browsers. I continue to be puzzled by Wikimedia's use of XHTML Transitional, which has no advantage over HTML. Of course, it can't move to (X)HTML Strict, not only because of all the people who love the FONT tag and similar junk but because of the fundamentally anachronistic and paper-based approach to italics and bold ("Forget about the function, just think of the appearance"). -- Hoary (talk) 01:30, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the amicable response. Cat and pigeons! -- Hoary (talk) 09:45, 9 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello, Closedmouth ...

Please see this talk page and tell me what you think of my newly created Template:Oldprodfull ... would you use it, or update it if you encountered it?

Please forgive this WP:CANVAS, but I noticed that you converted a second PROD to a PROD-2, so I thought that I would solicit your feedback. :-)

Also, what are your thoughts on my proposed WP:FLAG-BIO and other flag templates?

Finding vandalism

Hey, question: Where do you go to find edits that might be vandalism? I want to fight vandalism but don't know where to start. Thanks! Gary King (talk) 09:49, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Just as an FYI, I reverted you here. dihydrogen monoxide (H20) 07:39, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Fat Cunt

My edit was not a joke. Readers looking for information regarding Admiral Ackbar will not be offended. Please reference [4] for further information.

Thank you. 15:43, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

No, it is clearly not a joke edit, and you've been told numerous times to stop removing it from the article. This is Wikipedia, not Encyclopedia Dramatica. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.164.201.64 (talk) 17:43, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

England national sports team managers thingy

Yeah, it was a mistake. I've speedied it myself. Thanks. --Dweller (talk) 14:29, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Lol. I missed the "Category:" off the front of it. I couldn't work out what I'd done wrong till I got your speedy notice... never occurred to me to check my contribs. Duh. --Dweller (talk) 07:29, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Buddha disambig-cleanup

Hi Closedmouth -

Given that you changed the dab tag to dab-cleanup on Buddha, could you please add a few words to the talk page to help us understand what you feel needs to be cleaned up? I hope you can understand that by articulating your concerns it would help direct our efforts. (Just to be clear: I do not disagree that the page could benefit from a "clean up"; it's just that guidance about such would be beneficial for many reasons :-) ) Thanks so much. Best wishes,

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to make constructive contributions to Wikipedia, at least one of your recent edits, such as the one you made to Maxwell's silver hammer cartoon, did not appear to be constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Closedmouth (talk) 14:20, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the belated welcome - I have been editing for about three years now :) It wasn't vandalism, but a deletion of a page which had been put up, as far as I can see solely to give false information for the purposes of supporting the sale of fake memorabilia. There is a long history of this. Look at the deletion logs for Last Memento of The Beatles and you will see what I mean. DavidFarmbrough (talk) 16:21, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Admin

Ever considered becoming one? --Dweller (talk) 17:18, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

The extra tools are the only reason to become an admin. You don't need to be an admin to be involved in the "bureaucracy or policy discussions or anything important like that", so that's an excellent start. I see what you mean about article writing - you would get objections for that, that's for sure, but the question is how many. I've seen plenty of good candidates who dont write articles pass RfA; I've also seen em fail, but they've usually got other failings too. The main criteria people want to see are (IMHO):
  • civility
  • experience
  • understanding of WP policies surrounding the tool usage the candidate says they'd be interested in.

So, if I trawled your recent history, would I find (much) any civility? Experience, you seem to have plenty of. How bout the third one; I guess you'd like to be able to do your own speedying - do you ever participate in deletion debates? Do admins often knock back your speedy tags? --Dweller (talk) 16:34, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
