Mulatto pictures

You know, I was fairly certain that those pictures of Obama and Berry would be removed (incidentally, I came across them while on Recent Changes patrol; I had nothing to do with posting them), but I didn't do it myself. Why? Because I couldn't think of any reason they should be removed. I mean, didn't they accurately represent examples of the subject? I'm not saying that you were wrong for removing them, I'd just like to see an explanation, rather than a rollback, which implies vandalism. Did you consider their placement vandalism? If so, why? Curiously, Unschool (talk) 05:39, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

If you check out the history of the article, the addition of the images has become contentious, and it's become clear that the editor who keeps adding them from various IPs is doing it to to be disruptive, with increasingly ridiculous and insulting edit summaries (see for example, the diff I reverted). With hindsight I probably should have used popups to revert rather than rollback, but I don't think it's a huge deal, it's easy to argue it's become vandalism. --Closedmouth (talk) 07:47, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
Wow, I hadn't even noticed that edit summary; that's pretty bad. I guess I'll have to go back into the edit history when I have time and see what the arguments have been. I know the term itself has become—at least in the US—so controversial that it is no longer even uttered. But Wikipedia is not censored, ergo, the article exists, and I just thought the pictures were kinda hard to argue with. Well, maybe another day; I've got other fish to fry. Thanks for informing me. AfD Question

Hello, I recently tagged the articles Adam Kaltenhauser, Dan Duszynski, Sheldon Miller, and Matt Schuessler for Proposed deletion. The author (and main contributor other than a few bots and editors that tagged the articles for various reasons) removed them without reason and I reverted. You suggested that I should take the articles to Articles for Deletion. When I do this do I have to group them? If so, how do I do that? Thank you. DonelleDer (talk) 17:28, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Date autoformatting change

So do we just remove all links to dates in articles now? --Closedmouth (talk) 15:31, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Indeed we do, so that (1) we see what our readers see (the density of errors and inconsistencies is appalling), and (2) the readability and appearance of the text is not marred by the addition of unnecessary bright-blue patches, and (3) our high-value links are not diluted by such unnecessary links.
DA was never a good idea, and apparently was introduced to "solve" a patch of edit-warring over US vs. international dates early on in the project. We've grown up now, and have guidelines for the selection of these formats. In any case, the difference between them is less than that of lexical and spelling differences across the Atlantic. Tony (talk) 02:29, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Dates

At the moment, there's a script for auditing dates, which includes the removal of autoformatting and the ironing out of the many inconsistencies in format and wrong global selections of format (international in a US-based article, for example). If you'd like to use it, please do so carefully, by presuing the diff that is automatically generated. Improvements are still being made.

Installation and usage of date-autoformatting removal script

Instructions for installation

  • EITHER: If you have a monobook already, go to it, click "edit this page", and paste in this string underneath your existing script:
importScript('User:Lightmouse/monobook.js/script.js');
  • OR: If you don't have a monobook.js page, create one using this title:
[[User:[your username]/monobook.js]]
Then click on "edit this page" and paste in at the top the "importScript" string you see three lines above here.
  • Hit "Save page".
  • Refresh your cache (instructions at top of monobook).
  • You're ready to start.

Applying the script—it's very simple

  • Go to an article and determine whether US or international format is used. (For this purpose, it's best to have selected "no preferences" for dates in your user preferences, which will display the raw date formats that our readers see. Otherwise, you'll need to check in edit mode.) Occasionally, you'll see that the wrong format is used (check MOSNUM's guidance on this carefully).
  • Click on "edit this page". You'll see the list of script commands under "what links here". Click on either "delink all dates to mdy" (US format) or "delink all dates to mdy" (international format).
  • The diff will automatically appear. Check through the changes you're making before saving them. If there are problems, fix them manually before saving, or cancel.
  • Leave a note at the article talk page if editors need to negotiate which format to use, or need to be alerted to any other date-related issues.
  • Click on "Save page": it's done.

Afterwards

  • Respond politely and promptly to any critical comments on your talk page. If someone wants to resist or revert, it's better to back down and move on to improve other articles where WPians appreciate your efforts. NEVER edit-war over date autoformatting; raise the issue at WT:MOSNUM.

Notes

  • [1] Treats only square-bracketed dates. The script removes square brackets only, which mostly involves the main text and footnotes; it's acceptable for citation-generated dates to be of a different format, particularly ISO (which must not be used in the main text).
  • [2] Piped year-links ([[1989 in baseball|1989]]). On purpose, the script will not touch these.
  • [3] Date-sorting templates in tables. As of August 23, a minor tweak must be made to the script (which will update automatically), to deal with the column-sorting template in tables. Please be aware of this in relation to Featured Lists and the like (i.e., hold off there until it's fixed). The "dts" and "dts2" templates are at issue, and can be identified in display mode by a small clickable item at the top of a column. This should be fixed soon.
  • [4] Antiquity-related articles. Articles on topics such as ancient Rome should be treated with caution, since the script removes year-links as well, and some editors may argue that there's a case for retaining the simple year and century links from ancient times (e.g., 212). It's better to ask first in these cases. In any case, such articles contain few if any full dates.
Thanks, that helps a lot. I've already been using the script, but it's good to have some clarity on how best to use it. --Closedmouth (talk) 03:53, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Deleted tag for "pages for deletion"

Dear closedmouth,

Thank you for fixing the "PROD" template which i placed here and here. But there seems to be a small problem; i was just going around Wiki and found this user (page dosen't exist), who looks like a person who created his account just to remove "deletion-logs" (see his contributions page)... I don't mean to trouble you, but what do you think i should do about this guy? Have a good day. Rehman (talk) 01:15, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Oops, sorry, forgot about your message. Unfortunately, the contests by this user, although they seem to be in bad faith and the account to be an SPA, are legitimate unless it can be expressly demonstrated that they're vandalism. The user may have been genuinely contesting the deletion of these articles. I would suggest taking the articles to AfD if you still want them deleted, and just forget about the "de-prodder" unless he starts becoming a proper nuisance. --Closedmouth (talk) 15:06, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Ok. Thanks for the tip. Have a good day. Rehman (talk) 08:39, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Reverts

Hey there, I had intended to comment on your talkpage, but then discovered that there had apparently been an MOS change regarding dates and got caught up in researching its origins. Sorry about that.— TAnthonyTalk 18:58, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Citect

The fixes for Citect and related articles were relatively simple, and given it's sufficiently notable perhaps you would like to review your AfD? I don't think this should end up in Schneider Electric as it's quite a separate topic and the company appears to be still trading using its old branding even if acquired by them. Hi - I see you have recently created one or more new stub types. As it states at Wikipedia:Stub, at the top of most stub categories, and in many other places on Wikipedia, it is recommended that new stub types are proposed prior to creation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals, in order to check whether the new stub type is already covered by existing stub types, whether it is named according to stub naming guidelines, whether it is otherwise correctly formatted, whether it reaches the standard threshold for creation of a new stub type, and whether it crosses existing stub type hierarchies. Your new stub type is currently listed at WP:WSS/D - please feel free to make any comments there as to any rationale for this stub type. And please, in future, consider proposing new stub types first! Grutness...wha? 00:15, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

S'alright - as I pointed out at WP:WSS/D, it makes sense, not that it's a template that will see much use, probably. As for being bold, that mainly applies to articles rather than templates, since they have a few more far-reaching effects. In the case of stub types, it's mainly a case of constantly struggling to keep all the ducks in a line and let the stub-sorters know what types exist :) Grutness...wha? 02:16, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Rosemary Ellen Guiley's wiki page

Dear Closedmouth,

It appears that Ms. Guiley's page is being edited by people that may have a personal problem with her. I am her manager and I want to see her page state only the facts. Not a paragraph that says that "she claims to have cleared ghost" and why would it be bias to leave her media credits on her page? That is indeed a body of her work.

Also, she has now written 41 books. Every time someone changes her page, it becomes outdated.

Sincerely,

Jana S. VanDyke —Preceding unsigned comment added by Janaofmm (talkcontribs) 17:16, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

I find it suspicious that some interviews with artists/bands are accepted while others are not

I posted a few interviews with bands that I thought would be good additions to their pages. I am not spamming, and I fully understand what no follow tags are. So, why are interviews from places like 'The Scenestar' accepted while other interviews are not? It's very suspicious. If external links can only come from official websites and MySpace pages, then interviews from all sources should be taken down. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ohnoerino (talkcontribs)

You seem to be saying that because there are other spam links on the page, it's okay to add more. Logic would say that you'd remove those links rather than add more. I don't see anything suspicious about it. --Closedmouth (talk) 08:24, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Duplicate image

Dear Closedmouth,

I have accidentally uploaded two identical-images on Commons and Wikipedia. I've tagged the image on wikipedia for speedy deletion, but it looks like i screwed up. Can you please see whats wrong? The two images are:
1. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Daily_temperature_in_bahrain.PNG
2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Daily_temperature_in_bahrain.PNG
Can you see whether i did anything wrong in the tagging-process? Because i am really confused... If possible, try to delete the image on Wikipedia, and leave the image on Commons (thats what i wanted to do). The deletion stuff is the only thing i cant get a hang of on wikipedia! Hope you can fix it, thanks in advance. Have a good day. Rehman (talk) 09:51, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to make constructive contributions to Wikipedia, at least one of your recent edits, such as the one you made to Freddie Benson, did not appear to be constructive and has been removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and read the welcome page to learn more about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Unwarranted change for the article. (GameShowKid)--(talk)--(evidence)-- 20:56, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

I had a talk with GSK about this, and don't think your edit was vandalism. You did cause some people quite a surprise, though ... the navbox for the iCarly show pointed at "Freddie Benson", so when people were trying to find out about their favorite children's show character, they got pointed at a an article about a rugby player.Kww (talk) 21:19, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
I'm on a dialup connection from now until sometime in 2009. As a result, WP is very slow for me. I tried to cancel twinkle from adding the warning notice (after I initially clicked it) by closing out the box that pops up, and thought it was canceled. In layman's terms, I apologize for that warning up there. It wasn't my intention to add it after I remembered WP:DTTR. --(GameShowKid)--(talk)--(evidence)-- 23:09, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

I am aware links have nofollow tags,I added the links as they all had some copyright content that you could not add to wikipedia. Whether images, production notes, news or reviews. So is an interview or review acceptable - a gallery? Would be handy to know whether their is a policy or just subjective. We already have thousands of links from Wikipedia where writers have used our content as reference or quoted from them. I was going to advise my staff to add any reviews or interviews they do to the appropriate person or movie.

Let me know when you get a chance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by FattyB1420 (talkcontribs) 11:10, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

There are hundreds of links to interviews with artists in the external link sections of their wikipedia pages. It even says under the 'external links' guidelines that interviews are fine to be added in that section. Especially for an artist like Lindstrom or Brian Eno, of whom there are few interviews available online, adding them is providing valuable information to the page.

I'm aware the links have nofollow tags - as I say, they were added to provide information, rather than to spam. Why were they deleted and not countless links like them?

Cheers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jokeandalaugh (talkcontribs) 10:16, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

If you have any commercial interest in the website you're promoting, you have a conflict of interest at the very least. If the link has genuine interest to the reader, an unconnected editor may add it to the article. Mass additions of links to a single site are strongly discouraged, especially if you have a connection to the site linked.
Underneath almost every album entry is a link to Pitchfork Media's review, for example. I could buy that these were added by an unconnected editor due to their size, but liks to reviews by sites like Tiny Mix Tapes (also frequently added) were clearly linked by people connected to that site, and (rightfully, as they add information and opinion) are allowed to stay. I'm not a paid employee of FACT's, but I don't see why this appears to the case for certain sites and not for others.
Out of curiosity, did you copy the format of the message above yours (on my talk page), or is this a sockpuppet account you're operating? It's preferable you don't operate sockpuppets, but as long as you're not disrupting Wikipedia, it's not really a problem, I'm just curious.
No, I simply copied the format. Could see why you thought that was the case - apologies for the confusion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jokeandalaugh (talkcontribs) 11:11, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Please forgive me. I said what I said in a fit of anger. I promise not to get that mad again. I offer you an honest apology closedmouth. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikicitiess (talkcontribs) 14:41, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

I don't mind, really, you obviously have anger issues, just stop yelling at people and learn to recognise when you're wrong and this kind of thing won't happen. --Closedmouth (talk) 14:47, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Help

can you please help. BrendaThaiAmerican is putting on going fake statments in the Brenda Song article this is very annoying changing the article 2 the old version like reverting on and on again. Please can someone warn this person about the changes. Please help thanx. --Mimaaimback 14:47, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm not really familiar with the situation, so I've just left a basic warning about adding unreferenced material. You might want to raise more specific concerns on their talk page as a follow up. --Closedmouth (talk) 08:19, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Incorrect Reversion

You have incorrectly reverted a page. There are postings on Flewis' talk page as to the rights of users to blank their user pages and Flewis was wrong (against Wiki policy) to revert a removal of the type of post he made (which by the by was against the facts). If you would like to get involved, there is a string of incorrect wiki bullying by Flewis some reference to which is currently available on his talk page; I suggest looking there first if you'd like to get involved. He appears to be an editor in need of supervision.96.224.42.29 (talk) 06:08, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Fine, whatever, I just reverted your blanking of a talk page that isn't yours. This isn't my dispute. --Closedmouth (talk) 06:22, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Huggle

I think I may just have managed to revert you. I undid my revert, but for some reason Huggle is being pretty random, not even glitchy random, just... random. neuro(talk) 06:55, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Pff, happens all the time. --Closedmouth (talk) 06:57, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks (3)

Revert Warring at Jerome Corsi

I noticed you're having a problem with RCBARDEN at Jerome Corsi. Just a friendly reminder about the WP:3RR. Honestly, I didn't look to see if you were an admin, if you are, you already know how to fix this problem.. if not, you should alert an admin and they can take care of it. Thanks for looking out for vandals. Matthew Glennon(Talk) 13:46, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, but I reported them to AIV and they were subsequently blocked. --Closedmouth (talk) 13:48, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the revert

Thanks for the revert for the FIL European Luge Championships 1996. It is much appreciated. Chris (talk) 12:44, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Missingno.

If you are pissed about the edit summary that's fine. I'll deal with that. But my article was very in-depth, relevant and well written, and furthermore there are NO articles about pokemon glitches up right now. The Pokemon Glitches page is just a redirect to pokemon red and blue. Please let me keep my article, O glorious administrator! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dudemeister1234 (talkcontribs) 14:27, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Uhh... that doesn't count. I want an article about Missingno., not a part of an article about glitches in general. What was wrong with my article? Explain that, specifically. Dudemeister1234 (talk) 22:19, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Red jew

It redirects to non-existant to two non-existent pages, jewfish is a disambiguation page to fish Not called Red jew. Read my explanation. cygnis insignis 03:42, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

G8 says ... or redirects to nonexistent targets. That is the reason for deleting. If the explanation is in the wrong tag, then please fix it. It can't redirect to another dab, that is nonsense. It doesn't refer to those species, and could not be referenced if it did. cygnis insignis 04:32, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Go ahead, 3RR is okay if you 'in the right'. Once again:
Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion#G8 This redirected to Jewfish, which I am converting to a dab, but actually refers (apparently) to 2 species of Lutjanus that are redlinks. Lutjanus currently redirects to the family, Lutjanidae, which is too broad a topic to include this informal name. It will be a useful redirect when the species (or genus) articles are up, but a dab with only two redlinks sucks.
I did not do this lightly, it took me some time to resolve and check these redirects and dabs. I merely wanted to finish a stub, an EXISTING page, one that links to the Jewfish dab. It is NOT called red jew, nor is the other article on the Jewfish disambiguation page. If the is a procedural problem - FIX IT. You have turned a reasonable request into an enormous waste of time. Do you deny that G8 states what I quoted, the target of this redirect does not exist. cygnis insignis 05:09, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Despite the RfD page stating: If the redirect is broken, meaning it redirects to an article that does not exist or itself, it can be deleted immediately, though you should check that there is not an alternative place it could be appropriately redirected to first. I did that. It is not the appropriate to list it at RfD, but I did it anyway. If there is a better way, please fix it. cygnis insignis 05:21, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your message, your response was encouraging/ I get frustrated when people think that I am trying to disrupt the improvement of our document. I listed it at RfD, despite my contention that it not the appropriate place to discuss a redirect that [now] links to nowhere. However, we are now well met and so on. Cheers for your contributions to the most brillant resource ever invented - wikipedia. cygnis insignis 17:42, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
