Introduction to contentious topics[edit]
You have recently edited a page related to Armenia, Azerbaijan, or related conflicts, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.
Extended-confirmed required[edit]
It has come to my attention that you have recently started to edit in articles related to Armenia and Azerbaijan. This editing area is under a community imposed extended-confirmed restriction, specifically "Politics, ethnic relations, and conflicts involving Armenia, Azerbaijan, or both—broadly construed and explicitly including the Armenian genocide—are placed under an extended confirmed restriction." Your number of edits is below the threshold for editing in the area, thus you cannot currently edit in articles and content under the scope of WP:GS/AA. - Please note that this applies to topics related to Azerbaijani and Armenian politics and history broadly construed: edits at Treaty of Kurakchay, Mammad Hasan agha Javanshir, and Sabirabad (city) violate this restriction. In this case, I've investigated the individual edits and find them to be unobjectionable, so I will not be enforcing sanctions at this time, but do not confuse this with an invitation to edit the topic further prior to reaching extended confirmed status. I would recommend avoiding Caucasus and Eastern European history topics entirely until you reach extended-confirmed status, as even nominally-unrelated articles, such as those about Georgian history, could be construed to be relevant to A-A based on their interaction with Russian and Turkish history. signed, Rosguill talk 16:39, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the clarification, since only one of my edits to an article related to the 1991 war had been reverted I was under the impression that the sanctions only applied to the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict, and not the entire region in general. I will refrain from making edits to such articles in the future.
- I was intending on and doing research for a major expansion to the article for the Emirate of Tbilisi, which is an article which would largely relate to Georgia and Arab and Persian history, and which only marginally intersects with Armenia and Azerbaijan in passing. Would I still be able to expand this article without controversy or should I stick so something safer and find another topic? Clystad (talk) 14:10, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
