Confused

[edit]

Aren't the Roman Catholics and the Syrian Christians the same? I saw an edit somewhere claiming Latin Catholics are a part of Roman Catholics. Please clarify. R.COutlander07@talk 06:17, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Actually many Eastern Syrian Catholics of Kerala (the Syro Malabar and Syro Malankara) call themselves as "Roman Catholics" unknowingly, it's actually wrong they are to be referred as Eastern Syrian Catholics as they form part of the Eastern Catholic Churches, meaning they would retain their Syriac tradition but they would be under the Catholic Pope.

The Roman Catholics are the Catholics who are under the Roman Rite of the Latin Church, they are also known as Latin Catholics. These Catholics do not have any affiliation to any other church or Rite (prarthana kramam), they are solely under the Catholic Pope Cochikkaran (talk) 07:25, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Roman Catholics were the ones who stood against the Coonan cross oath and deviated from the Syrian rites as of the council Synod of diamper, is that right? R.COutlander07@talk 08:17, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

or the Eastern Syrian Catholics? Which one?. R.COutlander07@talk 08:20, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User:Outlander07, Actually the Roman Catholics (Latin Catholics) were never under the Syriac Rites. There are 2 Eastern Syrian Catholics in Kerala the Syro Malabar (which uses the East Syriac rite which was the rite which all the Saint Thomas Syrian Christians used under the Church of the East) and the Syro Malankara (which uses the West Syriac Rite, the West Syriac Rite was adopted by the Syrian Christians who never wanted to be under the Catholic Pope as the Syrian Christians who were using the East Syriac rite was brought into Catholic faith).

Initially all Syrian Christians supported the Koonana Kurish Sathyam but later Palliveettil Chandy of Kuravilangad was convinced that they would not loose their Syriac tradition even if they joined the Catholic Church, thus a huge chunk of Saint Thomas Syrian Christians joined the Syro Malabar Church.

The Roman Catholics (Latin Catholics) had nothing to do with these events (Cochikkaran (talk) 08:41, 23 July 2021 (UTC))[reply]

User:Outlander07, please read the following: "After the Coonan Cross Oath, the Portuguese missionaries attempted reconciliation with Saint Thomas Christians but were not successful. Later, Pope Alexander VII sent the Syriac bishop Joseph Sebastiani as the head of a Carmelite delegation that regained most of the Saint Thomas Christians, including Parambil Chandy of Kuravilangad and Kadavil Chandy Kathanar. Palliveettil Chandy was consecrated as the Metropolitan for the Chaldean Syriac Catholics who professed to obey the Catholic Church in 1663", Quoted from the Article Coonan Cross Oath (Cochikkaran (talk) 09:04, 23 July 2021 (UTC))[reply]

I get it. Anyhow what about their ethnicity & heritage?, can hardly find the mention anywhere on Wikipedia. R.COutlander07@talk 09:09, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User:Outlander07, About whose, I didn't get you. Can you specify Cochikkaran (talk) 09:13, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just curious about the Roman Catholics of Kerala and their origins. I have a newsletter that affirms they form a part of the Syrian Christian community. They claim the Latin Catholics also share the common church rites but have the heritage unalike. Is there any truth or just a hoax? R.COutlander07@talk 09:23, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User:Outlander07, Actually Some Saint Thomas Syrian Christians had joined the Roman or Latin Catholic community of Kerala but the numbers from the Hindu castes which converted overlaps it...Latin Roman Catholics cannot be grouped with the Saint Thomas Syrian Christians as they are a complete different groups with a different culture, Region, occupation, social status, Rite etc..In the book "Anthropology of Syrian Christians", Iyer clearly states that the Anjuttikkar and Ezhunuttikkar subgroups among the Latin Catholics were trying to assert their relation with the Saint Thomas Syrian Christians...There are various sub-groups among the Latin Catholics itself, the "St Thomas Latin Catholics" an endogamous subgroup are descended from the Saint Thomas Syrian Christians (Cochikkaran (talk) 09:30, 23 July 2021 (UTC))[reply]

Owh now I get it. Anyway, thank you so much for explaining in detail. R.COutlander07@talk 09:57, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
