Hi,

I'd like to take the opportunity to advise you on two matters which, being a member or former member of the Northern Ireland WikiProject or it's sister project on Belfast, you might be interested in the following submission about a recent terrorist attack Wikipedia:Northern Irish Wikipedians' notice board#News.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to ask for your help in reviving the Northern Ireland WikiProject. Given that there are only a small number of Wikipedians from Northern Ireland or interested specifically in the region, the project needs all the help it can get.

Cheers, --Setanta747 (talk) 13:05, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Questionnaire

[edit]

In an effort to assess the progress of Wikiproject Cheshire, it has been decided to send a questionnaire to members. To answer, please copy this questionnaire and paste your answers on the answer page. While participation is, of course, not compulsory, thoughtful answers will help the project to develop and improve. Thank you.

1. The project is always looking for new members, so we want to find out which ways of attracting and approaching potential members work best. Do you remember how and why you joined?
Answer:
2. How would you describe your involvement in the project? What activities do you undertake and how often do you edit Cheshire-related article?
Answer:
3. Do you feel like you receive adequate support/contact from project members?
Answer:
4. The project talk page is intended to be the hub of the project, where members discuss articles and help each other improving them. Until very recently it has been almost inactive, but do you check the project talk page?
Answer:
4a. If the talk page was more active, would you get involved in discussions there?
Answer:
5. When viewing Cheshire-related articles, are there any issues that have stood out as needing attention or frustrated you? (Traditional counties POV, poor coverage about a particular subject, vandalism going unnoticed etc)
Answer:
6. Maintaining the Cheshire portal is one of the Cheshire WikiProject's main aims, providing a display of the best and most up to date articles that are part of the project. There is currently a drive to promote it to featured status, but input from a wide range of members is needed. Do you have the portal on your watchlist?
Answer:
7. Would you be interesting in subscribing to a newsletter covering North West England, with details of work done by WikiProjects representing Cheshire, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside?
Answer:
8. Finally, are there any improvements or initiatives you'd like to see WP:CHES undertake, or general comments you'd like to make?
Answer:

Invitation to Wikipedia meetup in London

Wikimedia UK logo

Date: 13:00 onwards, Sunday 10 August 2008

Venue: Penderel's Oak pub, Holborn WC1 map

More information: Wikipedia:Meetup/London 12

Hello,

I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.

If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.

The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!

Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.

Yours,

James F. (talk) 09:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please forgive the slightly impersonal mass-invite!

Hello. In some of your recent edits to articles you added links which did not add meaning, or repeated the same link in the article. Please see Wikipedia's guideline on links to avoid overlinking. -Fnlayson (talk) 21:59, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Coolhawks you appear to be still adding links to articles that have to be removed either because they are not needed or link to non relevant content. I appreciate you are trying to help but you need to understand that what you are doing is creating extra work for others and could be seen as disruptive. It would be a shame to see you blocked for disruptive behaviour so can you please STOP adding links until you understand the relevant guidelines and policies. Thank you. Passer rating

Coolhawks88—FYI, passer rating is not a percentage, but a number, similar to octane rating. Samer (talk) 04:09, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Improper categorisation

[edit]

Please note, adding pages to Category:Wikipedia semi-protected pages does not automatically protect pages and you do not have the authority to protect pages. If you think that a page warrants protection you need to request page protection so that an administrator can protect a page. You have inappropriately added a number of articles to Category:Wikipedia semi-protected pages today and I would suggest that you self-revert the inappropriate addition on pages where this has not already been done by other editors. --AussieLegend (talk) 07:49, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Subcategories

[edit]

Regarding several of your recent edits (e.g., [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]), please note that it is generally unnecessary for an article to be in a category and one or more of its subcategories (see Wikipedia:Subcategorization). In each of the cases linked, you added a high-level category when the article was already in one or more of its subcategories; for example:

Please review the Categorization guideline before making additional large-scale category changes. Thank you, -- Black Falcon (talk) 19:02, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

The best way to think about WP:Categories on Wikipedia is a structured hierarchy, like a large pyramid, with articles contained within small granular categories at the bottom and these categories contained in fewer, but increasingly larger categories as we get closer to the top. The model of subsidiarity applies, so articles are always contained within the lowest suitable categories. An alternative model would be the "keywords" model (as used on sites like flickr.com) where an article is placed in all categories that are associated with it, even if the connection is vague. Wikipedia does not use this model. MRSC (talk) 17:00, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated Category:Golf Wives and Girlfriends (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) for deletion. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at the discussion page. Thank you. — ξxplicit 00:00, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Subcategories, again

[edit]

I have noticed that you are more frequently applying lower-level subcategories to articles, and I want to express my appreciation to you for that. I want to ask, however, that you take even greater care to not add redundant categories. For example, it was not necessary to place:

  1. Kiss (band) in Category:1972 establishments (diff) because the article already is in Category:Musical groups established in 1972;
  2. Quiznos in Category:1981 establishments (diff) because the article already is in Category:Companies established in 1981;
  3. Rita's Water Ice in Category:1984 establishments (diff) because the article already is in Category:Companies established in 1984;
  4. Council Rock High School South in Category:2002 establishments (diff) because the article already is in Category:Educational institutions established in 2002;
  5. Harrods in Category:1834 establishments (diff) because the article already is in Category:Companies established in 1834; and
  6. Samantha Cameron in Category:British people (diff) because the article already is in Category:English businesspeople.

I also ask that you be more cautious with adding categories in general, for example:

  1. The Chinstrap Penguin (diff) is a bird found in the Antarctic region (the region surrounding the South Pole), but not a bird of the Arctic (the region surrounding the North Pole).
  2. Nick Clegg should not have been placed in Category:British atheists (diff) without a source in the article to confirm this; see Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Categories.

Thank you, -- Black Falcon (talk) 05:22, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Railway station categories

[edit]

Hi, regarding these edits: 1, 2 - we don't normally use [[Category:xxxx establishments]] on railway stations: these categories have special subcategories [[Category:Railway stations opened in xxxx]]. Since the two stations concerned were already in Category:Railway stations opened in 1906 and Category:Railway stations opened in 1852, there was no need for them to also be in Category:1906 establishments and Category:1852 establishments, so I have reverted both. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:17, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I see a number of warnings/complaints on this page, and that you have never responded to any of them. This is a collaborative work and communication with other editors is vital and not optional. Liverpool F.C. wiki

[edit]

Hello, I am the lead sysop on the Liverpool F.C. wiki. It is a wiki dedicated solely to Liverpool F.C.. We aim to make the ultimate database for the club we all love. Since adopting the incredibly inactive wiki about a month ago we have greatly increased the article count and modernized it from it's previous state. The problem is there are not many active members on the site and we need more for the site to properly grow. It is well organized and on it's way to be a great site we just need more editors to expand. It is based on Wikia's network of wikis. Like Wikipedia it is free to use and the editing process is exactly the same. If you know how to edit Wikipedia you will know how to edit the Liverpool F.C. wiki. Now for the question you may be asking yourself. Why edit there? Wikipedia has articles on Liverpool. This is true. At the Liverpool wiki it is all about Liverpool. We allow editors to edit anything about Liverpool no matter how trivial. We allow edits on reserve and academy players, and even things as trivial as the fitness coaches for the year 2011. We also do not lock pages to registered users. That means if you have something to say about Steven Gerrard you can click edit and not view source and actually write something. I would love for you to come by and check the wiki out. Feel free to edit any page. Every time you click edit your ARE helping this wiki grow. Thanks for taking the time to read this! http://liverpoolfc.wikia.com/wiki/Liverpool_FC_Wiki --Coffeeclub213 (talk) 02:27, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, at Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge we're striving to bring about 10,000 article improvements and creations for the UK and Ireland and inspire others to create more content. In order to achieve this we need diversity of content, in all parts of the UK and Ireland on all topics. Eventually a regional contest will be held for all parts of the British Isles, like they were for Wales and the Wedt Country. We currently have just over 1900 articles and need contributors! If you think you'd be interested in collaborating on this and helping reach the target quicker, please sign up and begin listing your entries there as soon as possible!
