Hello, Coonic17, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Ian and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please complete the student training, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

September 2015

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "Coonic17", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because it contains "coon", a derogatory racial slur. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username by completing this form, or you may simply create a new account for editing. Thank you. Username

[edit]

I apologize if my username is associated with a racial slur. It is, in fact, a combination of my last name and my husband's first name. I would prefer to keep this username if at all possible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.225.116.67 (talk) 21:09, 21 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your response. I appreciate your explanation; however, I believe that most users will see the racial slur "coon" very prominently when seeing your username, leading to a disharmonious editing environment. Since we do not agree on this issue, I have requested more opinions on your username at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names, so that other Wikipedia users can give their input on whether you should change your username or not. That discussion has been closed, with everyone but the nominator agreeing that your username is not a problem and you may continue to use it. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:15, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It also seems that the user who made a stink about it in the first place was misusing an undisclosed alternate account and has been blocked. I hope this experience has not put you off contributing here, in the end everything seems to have turned out all right, with the community supporting your name and removing the person who stirred this up.
