Introduction to contentious topics[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to articles about living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Information icon You have recently made edits related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them. This is a standard message to inform you that gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them is a designated contentious topic. This message does not imply that there are any issues with your editing. For more information about the contentious topics system, please see Wikipedia:Contentious topics. Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page List of Upper Canada College alumni, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A "missing title" error. References show this error when they do not have a title. Please edit the article to add the appropriate title parameter to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help)

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 18:37, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:59, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Autoblock[edit]

Block message:

Autoblocked because your IP address was recently used by "Kaksk". The reason given for Kaksk's block is: "Vandalism-only account".

Accept reason: You're  Confirmed to a vandal, which is pretty suspicious. However, the IP address looks to me like it's allocated to a cloud security provider for a shared IP. I lifted the hard block, so you should be able to edit from that IP now. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 03:35, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What is the relationship between this account and B2005 and Kaksk (for example, there are others)? There are multiple instances of B2005 and Kaksk logging out and this account logging in immediately after. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 19:09, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
B2005 is my former alt that I haven't used in months. I have no idea who Kaksk is. The only other account I have is Bear6811 which I lost the password to a few years ago. -- Cosmic6811 🍁 (T · C) 19:12, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
well, this account and Kaksk are on the same IP, and the same device apparently; perhaps you might explain your situation. --jpgordon𝄢𝄆𝄐𝄇 19:42, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'm at school right now. Is it possible that there's a proxy server between Wikipedia and myself causing us to show up as being on the same device? -- Cosmic6811 🍁 (T · C) 19:44, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The IP that Wikipedia:Get my IP address gives is the same as the one given on whatismyipaddress.com and according to that website, this IP is a VPN server. The logging out and this account logging in must be a coincidence as I don't know who Kaksk is and have never heard of that name. -- Cosmic6811 🍁 (T · C) 19:57, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Revert[edit]

I do not think it was adequately justified, considering it was a huge chunk of adequately sourced material, which I then made the IP specifically aware of. Consider the "vandalism" directed as a patch to them, and not you. Cheers! Remsense 05:34, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That makes sense. The warning you left though states that the edit summary didn't "appear to be appropriate, civil, or otherwise constructive" which isn't exactly true. Perhaps a different message would be more suitable as the problem is the removal of sourced material, not the edit summary itself. -- Cosmic6811 🍁 (T · C) 05:42, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I mentioned the issue with source material at the end, where I can add an extra comment. Would've been better to forego a template entirely, I will admit. I would characterize it as inappropriate and uncivil, considering it abruptly assumes and targets "activist editors" for adding the information. Certainly I don't think someone who wrote an edit summary of that tone regularly would be seen as being adequately civil, but it's a matter of perspective. Remsense 05:45, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah now that I've read it again it's certainly a matter of perspective. I personally didn't find it inappropriate or uncivil but others very well may so it's probably best to characterize it as uncivil. -- Cosmic6811 🍁 (T · C) 05:49, 5 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Al-Ashqar[edit]

Hi. We can not say that this shaykh was "a salafi and Muslim Brotherhood scholar". He could be only a salafi or an Ikhwani (M.B.). These two are opposites. Anyways. He was from Muslim Brotherhood, so he was not a salafi. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.60.29.11 (talk) 00:31, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I see. Next time it would be useful to explain that in the edit summary so that people know. Thank you! -- Cosmic6811 🍁 (T · C) 00:37, 16 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback[edit]

Hi Cosmic6811. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Please keep the following things in mind while using rollback:

  • Being granted rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle or Ultraviolet. It just adds a [Rollback] button next to a page's latest live revision - that's all. It does not grant you any additional "status" on Wikipedia, nor does it change how Wikipedia policies apply to you.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear and unambiguous cases of vandalism only. Never use rollback to revert good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war, and it should never be used in a content-related dispute to restore the page to your preferred revision. If rollback is abused or used for this purpose or any other inappropriate purpose, the rights will be revoked.
  • Use common sense. If you're not sure about something, ask!

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Fastily 04:45, 2 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
