Hatnotes

Hi Cowdy - thank you for all the work you're doing on scuba-related articles. I know it's a steep learning curve, but I'll try to keep helping you where I can.

It's not immediately obvious, but Aquathlon needs a hatnote while Aquathlon (underwater wrestling) doesn't! That's because someone looking for Aquathlon (underwater wrestling) could type 'Aquathlon' into the search box and arrive at the (wrong) Aquathlon article so we have a hatnote on that article to direct them to the one they wanted. On the other hand, you can only arrive at Aquathlon (underwater wrestling) by searching for 'Aquathlon (underwater wrestling)' so visitors looking for the page about running and swimming will never arrive at the underwater wrestling article - therefore we don't use a hatnote there because there's nobody who would need it.

Generally, if the name is already taken, then something like (politician) or (Australian politician) is preferred to using year of birth/death, as a reader is likely to know he's a politician but is unlikely to know the birth year. BSAC

I've just put back the ref to Geraint's book, as the web sites that you supplied don't mention Underwater sports, just octopush/underwater hockey. I'm pretty sure it was me who added the Geraint book as I remember being struck by the fact that it documented BSAC's recognition as the governing body for scuba diving from 1954. I can see where you got the idea of "England and the UK" from, but it really makes little sense at first glance unless you explain that Scotland, Wales and NI have their own governing bodies - and then you have to wonder in what sense BSAC could be governing body for the whole UK? (answer is: it isn't, in any meaningful way). Anyway, that's far too detailed for a general article, so I'd recommend not labouring the point. I should also mention that per WP:OVERLINK, we don't link geographical locations when a reasonably-educated English-speaker would be expected to know where they are (unless our article on the place was particularly relevant to the article it was being linked from). So generally, we wouldn't link England and United Kingdom.

Have another look anyway, and see if we should check out The Wayback Machine for any other dead links (doesn't work for Google Books). Thanks for the info re The Wayback Machine. After reading the NGB section on the Sport English website, I have done the following. An explanation about the NGB situation for ‘SUB AQUA’ in the UK has been added to the following articles - WASAC and NIFSAC. On the SSAC article, I have mentioned its status as the Scottish NGB. The Sport governing body article has also been edited to include more explanation about NGBs using the example of NIFSAC. I plan to do the same for the BSAC article and possibly for the SSAC article via the addition of new sections within these articles.Cowdy001 (talk) 21:08, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Latitude & Longitude for the Santiago wreck

You asked me "Where did you get the latitude & longitude for the Santiago wreck site?". I'm from Adelaide and I know where the Garden Island Ships' Graveyard is, so I looked it up on GoogleMaps. The List Of Shipwrecks page had the Santiago listed where the Postboy is. I see what I came up with isn't the same as the Santiago_(1856_ship) page. I didn't know that this page existed. It is probably advisable to change the List_of_shipwrecks_of_Australia page to match the Santiago page. I'll leave that to you as the custodian of the page. Degei wreck off Donington Reef, Port Lincoln

Hi Cowdy001, Just saw you and your interests in SA and diving. I'm aware of a shipwreck off Port Lincoln but don't know exact details and can't find any sources. I've always known of it as "the D-G". It isn't on List of shipwrecks of Australia. There is a reference to it here as Deigi [1]. The top of the mast can be seen just below the water surface about 50m west of Donington Island/Reef. Hi Philiashasspots, I do know of the 'Degei' - I have dived on it several times. I heard a story that the master using GPS to navigate out of the Port. It is not in List of shipwrecks of Australia yet because there is about 800 known wrecks off the coast of South Australia & it going to sometime to get to that particular vessel. There is some info on page 43 of South Australian Shipwrecks 1802-1989 which you can download a copy of from this page - https://sites.google.com/site/suhrpublications/south-australian-shipwrecks. There is also an entry in the Australian National Shipwreck Database at https://apps5a.ris.environment.gov.au/shipwreck/public/wreck/wreck.do?key=5286. Hi Peter, It is about 'half ready for uploading'; probably about half a day's work. I could probably get it upload sometime later next week as I am very busy until next Monday. I would also prefer to use the title 'Underwater orienteering' as this is consistent with the CMAS rules and with the usual practice amongst divers within the anglosphere. The term 'Scuba orienteering' can be included as an alternative name. As previously mentioned, photos would be nice as the inclusion of these in an WP article immediately counters any scepticism about the validity of the article.Cowdy001 (talk) 21:39, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Hi Cowdy, I admire your work, and so wanted to take the time to let you know that I plan to revert your recent change to the Southern Ocean article that I am presently working on, and I do not want to cause you any annoyance. I had spent considerable time hunting for a representative Lead Section image over the last 24 hours and when I found the 1912 map File:Antarctica_1912_edit.jpg I was elated. In my eyes, it is a scrumptious image that well depicts the subject matter (shows the subject, locates the subject, and shows provenance of the subject, all at the same time) as so is well worthy of being a lead article image in the Infobox position. I was extremely pleased when I also realised that the image is both a featured picture and a picture of the day, both helpful attributes in trying to bring the article up to 'featured' status. I feel that the navigation box that you moved up to Lead Section Infobox position only serves the purpose of taking readers away from the page and needs no prominence on the page (I had been tempted to just delete it previously). (In my opinion, that sidebar, when originally created, should have been a collapsed navbox at the bottom of the page because the page real-estate it consumes has caused some problems with pushing other images down the page on some screen sizes.) It appears that you tried to give Great Australian Bight Marine Park a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. Hi Doug butler, Geoscience has a 'bounded locality' called Finniss (feature no. SA0023992) on west side of Lake Alexandria at 35º 23' 1 S 138º 49' 27 E. If you search for the same feature on Property Location Browser, you will get a better view of where it is (i.e. NW of the Finniss River) plus the location of a town that probably was never built. You can use both the Geoscience and Property Location Browse results as citations, although the latter will require a basic description on how to find the information in the citation's title. Eavesdropping in, have you found a way of citing or linking directly to a page of the gazetteer in PLB? There used to be a Placenames Online site with the gazetteer that was handy for citing derivations of names, but now that website is gone, the dataset can be downloaded en masse, or accessed through PLB without an obvious way of linking to an individual entry. Don't know of a way to cite PLB in the same manner as the Geoscience Aust Gazetteer; this is probably a question for somebody with knowledge of the WP code et al. Another option is to see if there is any reference to the SAG Gazette and if the reference is post-1999, you can go to the SAG Gazette archive (at http://www.governmentgazette.sa.gov.au/) and read the actual entry & then cite it if it meets your needs.
