Update to tl:Administrative divisions of Ukraine[edit]

I did not erase old template, but rather moved it to tl:Regions of Ukraine. The template truly represents regions rather than an administrative divisions as it presents regions such as oblasts, autonomous republic, and important cities. Honestly, I found it cumbersome to change all the instances of tl:Admin divisions of Ukraine to tl:Regions of Ukraine on bottom of all of the oblast pages, city articles, etc when the template you created isn't used on very many.. I instead took the liberty to move yours to the new template page and vice versa.. Much easier way to fix the situation! lol.

Btw, I also added some of my info I have been working on in my own /Oblasts of Ukraine article.. I think this warrants a similar Federal cities of Ukraine or something like that (don't worry--that's just a placeholder name, since no one refers to Kiev and Sevastopol as federal cities.. I'm just brainstorming here... Perhaps Ukrainian cities with special status?

Just take a look at how Federal cities of Russia is created. They too have two "federal"--err central government cities. Creating those two articles can enable us to make Administrative divisions of Ukraine an overview rather than an exhaustive and extensive article... _dsergienko 03:18, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Created an article "Cities with special status". Also DDima, the templates for the administrative divisions of regions need to be reviewed. It is impossible to list all villages in such a template and moreover pointless. I believe it would be much simple to create a separate template for each raion and regional cities (of regional importance). The rest can be addressed through the general article Regions of Ukraine. Yeah, we'll have to also create articles on Cities of oblast subordinance and the like.. And yeah, I'm aware of that problem, for right now I was just linking to the village articles we had for that specific oblast... In the case of Lviv, there were just too many such village articles created and they were removed from {{Lviv Oblast}}. I wouldn't have a problem removing villages from these templates altogether...
I've been reviewing each of these templates last month (and still attempting to do so today), trying to make them all alike with one another... The problem is that some oblasts have way too many UTS (upwards of a hundred, c.f. {{Donetsk Oblast}}), and agreed, it's ridiculous to list each and every single one. On the other hand, some oblasts, such as {{Chernivtsi Oblast}}, only have a handful of UTS, and it really doesn't hurt having them in the template, since there are only 8 for that entire oblast..
I've been trying to make them all follow the same general pattern/scheme, as well as trying to make all of the UTS articles created/blue, c.f. {{Ternopil Oblast}}, although knowing me, I can't make a simple one-word stub about a location,.. What do you think about this one^^ Villages are nuked, and I simplified the template by removing the Ukrainian flag (we are really over patriotic on here :)), and replaced COA with a flag of the subdivision (smaller, and takes up less room) For comparison, other countries don't have their flags on every single article/template of their subdivision (c.f. {{Indiana}} and {{Krasnoyarsk Krai}}.
Someone raised a concern at Template talk:Ukrainian oblast about the confusion surrounding "cities of oblast subordinance" which can confuse readers who aren't familiar with Ukrainian subdivisions.. Per the concerns, I changed "oblast subordinance" to "major cities" and to distinguish from the two added another subgroup for "regional cities" -- not under any provincial-level subordination. --ddima (talk) 19:59, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I just posted onto the talkpage of Template talk:Ukrainian oblast and then I saw your reply here. I like the idea to call the cities major, while the other ones could be called minor. After all there are only two types of cites other than Kiev and Sevastopol, they are either of regional importance (major cities) or district importance (minor cities). Concerning the template I think it would be wise to include only raions (districts), major cities, and district seats. Then for each individual raion (district) or city there should be a separate template. For example, cities of Kiev, Donetsk, Sevastopol, Kharkiv, and others should also have their templates. Honestly, I'd rather have the UTS in the templates since it provides the reader with all of the administrative subdivisions of that specific oblast in one place, and they can see the entire list of towns without having to go elsewhere (provided we include the entire list, as only a couple of oblasts templates I've updated with the entire UTS list). And in some cases, the UTS is also the raion center (c.f. Mlyniv is admin. center of Mlyniv Raion), among others in that province, and perhaps in other oblasts as well. --ddima (talk) 17:11, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Added in the "below" line to the template below listing links to UTS and villages.. Couple options:

If removing the UTS let's at least keep the links to them like so, it doesn't clutter up the template and still gives readers another link to click!
Or we just keep the UTS all in the templates except for the few oblasts with upwards of like 30 or so (Donetsk, Luhansk, etc)... there are just to many to list and most of them are red links anyways and for the few in say Chernivtsi (where there are 8 UTS), we just list them and leave it at that. --ddima (talk) 17:22, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think it looks great. Regional cities as I understand it implies that those are district seats (administrative centers). Is that right? We need also similar template for raions and, may be, some city's municipalities. Also beside "Major cities" and "Regional cities" there could also be cities that are part of bigger municipality such as Vynnyky that is part of Lviv city and I think there are few such cities in the East Ukraine as well. Another issue, I tried to compose infoboxes, however they did not come out well. May be you would have time to take a look at them. Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 18:29, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I'll update the templates probably later on tomorrow.. Actually, the "regional cities" I was referring to are the remaining cities in the oblast (oblast subordinance - which are listed under "Major cities," and the rest of them -- which for right now is listed under "regional cities") Perhaps a better name would be "minor cities" ? And actually not all of them are administrative centers: as you can see there is a "city" Khorostkiv but no Khorostkiv Raion. I don't think we should just pick and choose the cities by which ones are administrative centers and take the other ones out of the template. Let's have a full list of cities, just divided on their status (cities of oblast subordinance -- "major cities", and the other ones, possibly under a label such as "minor cities" or the like). --ddima (talk) 21:10, 5 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I second your observation here. But it also might be because the "To do list" on Wikipedia:UKRAINE is not really appealing now. Maybe we can have a good discussion on what we should focus on on Wikipedia:UKRAINE (preferable something "all people who want to improve Ukrainian related articles" have an interest in; maybe first ask for interests and then for ideas) and then all do a bit on that. Dear DDima, I'm afraid I will need to ask you to protect the page as we're having a bad case of history repeating. You may have remember disputes around this article, mostly involving me and user Lvivske who was trying to bring one-dimensional negative coverage of Rinat Akhmetov biography. We even managed to come to some consensus after your interference and the article took the shape of more or less balanced biography, mentioning both positive and negative moments. Yet, a couple of days ago user Lvivske attacked the page again, reverting to all before-the-consensus edits. I will try to resolve the issue on my own, as recommended by Wiki, but still may I count on your kind support if it's needed? I vehemently deny these accusations of me "attacking" the page. No consensus was ever really established, just some adjustments made and I happened to take a wiki-break. I've since reviewed the edits you made and seen a lot of issues with trouble maintaining a WP:NPOV and WP:UNDUE. Your recent reversions were not constructive and I even started talk page discussions on them because they were borderline vandalism. Exactly, I do have the same feeling. We've had a lot of quarelling here and finally came to the version which contained both positive and negative information, supported by reliable sources only, and that created the utmost unprejudiced appearance of the article, to my mind. Now, with all that edits done by Львівське, the article looks biased again. MSU Interview[edit]

Dear DDima,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Anatoly Dneprov (writer)[edit]

Thanks for your edits in Anatoly Dneprov. Two three days ago I read two of his short stories 1) Maxwell Equation 2) Iva (In Bengali translation, I do not know Russian) and highly liked those stories (mainly science fictions). But I was surprised to see there is not any article on this prolific writer in Wikipedia. In Google Search (English, Russian) too, I could not find sufficient amount of information on the writer. What I have found, I have already posted in the article. I am an Indian, I am facing trouble to collect more information for the article. If you know about Anatoly Dneprov, can you help to add more information in the article?

Collage pictures[edit]

Hello DDima, I noticed you uploaded quite a number of collage pictures of various cities. Can you please provide an account of the provenance of the individual component pictures in each of them? If you are yourself the photographer of every individual component image, then please say so explicitly. If you used freely licensed photographs already existing on Wikipedia or Commons, you still need to credit the sources and authors. You cannot release such images as your "own work". Please make a list of this type:

No problem, I was glad to help out. Thanks for starting the article! We could use some pictures perhaps, and maybe nominate it for the WP:DYK section on the Main Page? I've been editing since 2006 and learning the markup and ways of Wikipedia just sort of grows on you over time... there are some guidelines which can help out (WP:STYLE, etc). But mainly, with the links, you have to make sure not to over link, for instance if you have one link to Crimea another one to Crimea later on in the next paragraph doesn't need to be linked again.. --ddima (talk) 23:25, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Templates[edit]

Hey. Check out {{Regions of Ukraine}}, I've updated it to something more streamlined and a lot simpler to read. As such, I really don't think there is a need for {{Administrative divisions of the Ukrainian SSR}} since they are essentially the same thing (I've added a bottom row with the former subdivisions) and currently there are two templates taking up space when we can have just one. What do you say?

I would recommend we keep {{History of Ukraine}} and {{Ukrainian statehood}} together as well, since in all reality they are one and the same thing. Ideally, I see the difference between these two templates, where {{History of Ukraine}} would have articles along the lines of History of Ukraine (1922-1991) and History of Ukraine (1991-Present) as well as events (Ukraine during World War I), with {{Ukrainian statehood}} having articles on the nation-states themselves (as it is now). But we are quite a long way away from having those articles and I figure it is best to keep them merged together for now (until a larger influx of Ukrainian Wikipedia editors!!).

Wow! I love the look of the template "Regions of Ukraine". It looks simply great. Some changes should be made, though. It would be better to rename the template to more general description such as subdivisions of Ukraine (currently titled as such, but named differently). Also, some categories are out place. For example, there is no difference between districts of cities with special status or any other cities, all those districts are created in the individual discretion of city government, thus, categories "Districts of cities with special status" and "Districts of regional cities" should be combined into one. Moreover, the city districts pretty much are the same level of subdivision as a conventional districts in Ukraine. I should point out also to the fact that the template does not include an important category of cities of raion (district) significance. That is a unique category for all cities other than of special status and of regional significance. Those cities usually are small and along with urban settlement can be considered as towns, yet unlike those urban settlements, they have a degree of autonomy within a district jurisdiction where they are located. There is very little information available about those cities and analysis of the category. Other than that the template looks more than wonderful - it's simple, easy on an eye, and very informative covering all major aspects of the administrative division of modern Ukraine. Great job!!! I've made some tweaks to the template. Merged the two raions (cities w/ special status and cities w/ regional importance together). The only reason I had them separate was because of the way KOATUU had them listed (separately). You're right, either way they are one and the same thing. I also tried to make it easier for the reader by changing "District city" to "District-level city" since it would be easy to confuse the former with "City district" for readers who are not familiar with the administrative scheme of Ukraine. Either way they need to re-do the entire administrative scheme of the country from scratch since all of this confusion is left over from Soviet times!

What do you say about {{Ukrainian statehood}}?

Great! But there is no need to create a fourth level. Rural settlements (selyshche) do not have any forms of representation or governments, they are like oscillated neighborhoods and usually are part of some settlement council, may it be urban (including city) or rural. I designed a table in the main article about the administrative divisions of Ukraine#Structure based on the 2001 Ukrainian Census. Frankly it is a certain degree of original research as there are no such tables and was created out of a personal perspective. For simplicity the administrative division in Ukraine is based on a structure: region-district-council. Council or "rada" (local name) is a representative body of any settlement and it was inherited from the Soviet administration. Districts are divided into several rural councils (silrada) and/or include other entities such as city councils (miskrada) of district-level cities (district significance) and settlement councils (selyshchna rada). Settlement councils always correspond to urban settlements, therefore other settlements that exist as part of rural councils are not taken into consideration and not mentioned in the Constitution of Ukraine. However that conclusion is based on my own perception and should be reviewed by a real expert, yet I came to it after reading various legislative materials of Verkhovna Rada and conducted a separate web research on the matter. But one should be aware of a fine difference between administrative division and a simple locality. Anyway I hope you will understand where I am coming from. At any rate the look of the template as I said before is terrific and provides an additional appeal aside of technicalities. Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 18:46, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Once I ran across some article about the cities of district significance and wanted to interpret it into the Anglophone Wikipedia, but just did not find a time. It is a great article that explained history and reason on creating of such an entity. Maybe later... There also some discussion and I believe a bill on the administrative reform in Ukraine. So, maybe there will be more changes in a future. Considering all your contribution, I feel like you should be aware of all that if did not. Thanks I appreciate it! I think I've spent more time and effort on designing the templates in my entire wiki-career than writing articles themselves.. Anyway, yeah the whole admin. structure is hard to understand (I still struggle with it sometimes lol) but you seem to have a better grasp of it! I removed the fourth level and tweaked it again "urban-type settlements" >>> "settlement councils" since we are sticking with the region-district-council method.

I've been considering re-writing the entire series of Administrative divisions of Ukraine to reflect consistency between names and terminology because the way it is now only you and me can understand it :) as for the casual reader.. I'm sure they will have a more difficult time understanding.. Anyway, for the past year I've been working on creating articles on Urban-type settlements and lately creating Raion articles for those that don't exist.

I fixed the link for Independence Day of Ukraine, but the other ones I believe you can add yourself, there shouldn't be any protection level on there.. Just make a quick sentence for it, something eye catching! They also have their own criteria for including these articles, like the main article the date links to can't be a stub.. just as long as you make the main article Ukraine and just link to the other ones (Constitution, Flag Day) you should be fine! Good job on the articles, I think if Independence Day of Ukraine is expanded a bit it can qualify for WP:DYK..

Template:Ukrainian statehood[edit]

The reason for the template was to demonstrate the development of the Ukrainian statehood. I do not see how both templates History of Ukraine and Ukrainian statehood are the same. The template on history of Ukraine is all mess as it is just a collection of topics in chronological order connected only with the national idea. The collection consists of selected events and collection of some random countries such as Hunnic Empire and Khazars that have little or no real relevance to Ukraine. Can you really explain how and why Yamana culture or Cimmerians relate to Ukraine, but then Pechenegs, Circasians, and Karakalpaks do not? I just wonder why the template does not mention dinosaurs that existed on the territory of Ukraine. There were mammoths, I heard. Now jokes aside, I must point that there more archaeological topics related to ancient history. Also there are some random geographical concepts such as Right and Left banks of Ukraine. The template definitely needs a major redevelopment.

Now the template on statehood introduces the reader not only with the national idea, but also how the idea of statehood to which Ukraine traveled so many years. It also shows how and why Ukraine was divided and the reason for its reunification in 1919. The template on statehood is not only and exclusively a historical template, but rather is geopolitical. It also does not confuse a reader with some stuff that took place thousands years before and events that would be part of a separate template. To me, the Statehood template looked like the History template in many ways, give or take a few links. Many of them are present in both of these templates, and I felt it was excessive to have both templates on some of those pages. I feel like there are too many templates as it is and we could cut down on them if anything. I would recommend making the Statehood template look similar to the History template so that it can "collapse it" and let it take up less room on the page as some of these pages are pretty short, and inserting a large bulky template makes them quite unsightly..

Also, if we are to keep it strictly to "statehood" entities, then I suggest removing such links as Soviet resistance or the Golden Horde; while the former does deal with Ukraine directly, it really wasn't a statehood entity... and the Golden Horde can't be considered a Ukrainian statehood entity much like the notion that "Moscow is the capital of Poland.." But then again, we need to introduce a link to Ukrainian State in {{Ukrainian statehood}} since that pertains to the topic quite well.. then again, it is also present in the History template, which is why I merged them in the first place, since both of these templates cover very similar topics and have many of the links that the other one has and vice versa..

Honestly, I think it would be best to do away with both of them altogether and leave them for a few main pages {{History of Ukraine}} obv. on a page like History of Ukraine and so on.. They just make the articles too cluttered and take up a lot of room IMHO..

I like the way is the {{Polish statehood}} template. I agree that the template needs some revision. There should be an article about the Golden Horde period on the territory of the East Ukraine, therefore I added Desht-i Qipchaq along with the Grand Duchy of Ruthenia. There is a very interesting subject on the history of Ruthenia about intercultural and diplomatic relations with Cumans, certain tribes of which were at service of the Grand Duchy of Ruthenia. I am a strong believer that there was more to it than a constant stance of war between nomads and the Medieval Kiev. What was the reason behind the establishment of the Crimean Khanate by the Tatar diaspora (Lipka Tatars) from Vilnius?

Also I used a Latin name variation rather than the transliterated Russian derivative which sets certain degree of confusion and implies the direct inheritance of statehood from the political polity based in Kiev to the political polity based in Moscow. Grand Duchy of Ruthenia was split (disintegrated) soon after the establishment of the Golden Horde empire by the mid 13th century. By the 15th century most of those territories allied either on a side of the Grand Duchy of Moscow or the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Ruthenia and Samogotia. Some other territories ended up as part of other states as for example the Kingdom of Ruthenia that was occupied by a number of other European states (Poland, Hungary).

Districts of Kiev[edit]

I do not really care about raions or districts, but Kiev has way to many neighborhoods and they are not part of the official administrative division. More over, it is consistent with the same content in other languages. I think it is a good idea to keep separate historical localities and actually designated admin. divisions. Many raions of Kiev city coincide in a way with their historical toponyms, but in actuality are two different things. Thanks I found them; I was only looking on the main category page at Commons. When you have time please can you check the references about "the style being newer the further from the gates" I think it should probably be more eastern or Islamic (I've taken a chance and altered t in the page anyway. It also says Scottish Baronial which I have left in, but I dont see any Scotish Baronial there at all.

I would like to prove a connection with Blore to this English house Sezincote House as I suspect it may have been the inspiration, I wold love to know if Blore was approaching the Islamic architecture from a purists point of view or from the Anglo-Indian architecture perspective; I'm think it's the latter. However, until we know for sure, we have to call it Islamic rather than the Anglo-Indian which it really is. Yeah I was leaning towards Anglo-Indian as well , but we can't be too sure without a good source, Doing a quick google search on Edward Blore brings up a nice book "Towers of Crim Tartary: English and Scottish Architects and Craftsmen in the Crimea, 1762-1853" There is a whole chapter devoted to Edwards Blore and Count Vorontsov.... Unfortunately there's no book preview available and I'm not sure where I can pick that book up! I'm sure it would have some great finds, though.

Hmm, not sure. What browser are you using? Because on all of mine it works just fine and that link takes me to the Ukrainian Wikipedia. Besides, wiki uses language codes for its http addresses so that's why a country code like ua probably won't fly. Can you try to clear your browsers' cache and cookies?

Compatibility of Ukraine, Russian, and Crimea pages[edit]

Hi DDima; Now that the page count stats at the Crimea page have started to settle down, it seemed time to start to bring the three related pages into some degree of agreement (Russia, Ukraine, Crimea). This morning when I looked at the Crimea page it was marked with templates and requests to clarify the current Russian military occupation in Crimea and various U.N. votes regarding Crimea. By looking at both the Ukraine page and the Russia page, I then constructed a minimum edit to at least answer the template request for why Russia has troops in Crimea. The previous version was too threadbare and bereft of dates and cites to even answer that simple question. User:DeC appears to be concerned about over-"tinkering" by other editors, but the page count stats suggest that this is longer a problem (it was different last month). User:DeC still has concerns. Honestly, I've always tried to stay as far as I could from such high-profile articles (at least until the dust settles, but at this rate--it could well pick up again) Anyways, I agree, there should be some form of consistency between the articles, but we will all need to keep tabs on them to make sure they stay that way because every day it's something different. Some event happens and one article says one thing and another says another.

User:RGloucester has brought up on talk that we should remove the #Politics section from the main Crimea article altogether--and I agree. It just seems like it will get too messy with us having to list the constitutional structure/laws/events of both Crimeas, where they could just as easily be described in detail in their own respective articles. I was just trying to get them under the same format like the rest of the district templates (including every locality, settlement). There's just so much work to do with Ukrainian subdivisions! If you ever wander over to the Polish-related articles or other countries, they had bots create a bunch of stubs with the information that was fed to them from their own language Wikipedias. See, the thing that bugs me is that when using {{Ukrainian oblast}} for the city administrative divisions templates, then a few kinks appear--the template's "below" field at the bottom links to nonexistent categories and sections (by sections I mean the List of urban-type settlements in Ukraine by subdivision). It works well with oblast templates, since the oblasts do have urban-type settlements and it is helpful to the reader by linking to the list, but when {{Cherkasy municipality}} is created, then it's an unnecessary link at the bottom since the city municipality doesn't even urban-type settlements under their jurisdiction. DDima, I know therefore I am seeking some consensus. May be it is possible to add some switch to the template. It is just all populated places are in a big mess. Some cities are identified as towns, some do not have infobox, some like Mospyne is part of Donetsk city, while it is not identified as such and there are many other issues with categorization and consistency. Doing all these corrections by hand, I agree, is a monstrous workload. I wish more people would be involved in it.

Also, talking about consistency, the more I write articles in the English wikipedia, the more I lean to the thought that may be all Ukrainian administrative division terms should be simply translated in English otherwise it only adds confusion and diminish a reading appeal. It seems that the term city of regional significance (Ukraine) corresponds to the English equivalent municipality, but on the other hand the Polish related articles introduced such terms as urban gmina (if I am not mistaken) which seems more related to the Ukrainian term. Writing "city of regional significance" is cumbersome and in a way disruptive during a reading, "regional city" is brief but is not widely used. I know, it it sure is cumbersome writing out the full terminology.. Interesting what the PL wiki did with regards to that, I haven't taken a look at it quite yet. If we write articles with "regional cities" then will we be distinguishing the rest as "district cities" or just leave them as they are right now?

But then again, if you take a look at what User:Ezhiki did with the Russian regional cities at City of federal subject significance, it appears that the article translates the Russian text directly as it is translated word for word (some of the cities listed in that article are called" urban okrugs," some are "cities under republic jurisdiction," etc, with no one-size-fits-all umbrella term). At one time I was trying to write up such an article, but gave up due to this exact same issue. I just have a feeling that tinkering around with the terminology and using a "more convenient one" for us could be going against WP's Original Research policy, which prohibits "original ideas, defining terms, coining new words, etc." What do you think? § DDima 04:31, 6 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Accusations of Russia 'invading' Crimea[edit]

I had adjusted the text to reflect the fact that Russia did not invade Crimea. The identity of the pro-russian militia is disputed, however Russia has officially repeated that they did not send troops into Crimea (except the recognised Russian military bases) and Putin also said that Russia did not train them... however I guess it is possible that some of the individuals involved could have served in the Russian millitary (purely my though - no evidence just a bit of logic). What kind of references? They're obviously going to be skewed towards their propaganda. BBC and CNN are very reliable sources and are well respected in the international community. BBC and CNN being very reliable sources is not really true either. If you look at the previous major international crisis in which their respective governments (UK and US) had a role, ie the War in Iraq, you'll see that they also ran articles on how Saddam was conspiring with Al-Qaeda, how he was trying to buy yellowcake uranium from Nigeria, etc. Basically fabricated propaganda supporting their governments' point of view. In times and contexts like these not a single source is reliable and/or unbiased, neither Russian nor Western. Hi DDima: During the last two or three days I had noticed a subsection blanking at the Russia page dealing with the annexation. After the section blanking, there was a full rewrite added by another user and a substantial change of NPOV compared to the text before the section blanking. No new information was added, yet the NPOV was substantially altered. The diff for the before and after of the section blanking is below. I tried to return the wording into neutral form. User:Irin seems to disagree about preserving neutrality. Could you look at this?

There is reference by ITAR-TASS that claims that a business card of the organization was found in completely burned down vehicle (I mean the whole car burnt down except for the card). Now based only on the reference the user claims involvement of the above mentioned organization. The user apparently was posing threats against me instead of finding a common ground when I addressed the issue at his talk page. The best thing about Wiki is consensus--I didn't see anything on the talk page regarding this, so let's bring it up there. And unless we all agree that PS should be included in the infobox, that information will stay out of the article (as it should, because that business card was deliberately planted there!). Otherwise, if, without consensus, he keeps including that information and keeps reverting our stable neutral version, then that would qualify as a 3RR. Subsection on Crimea encapsulation is vanishing[edit]

Hi DDima; Thank for your correction edits at the Russia page. Recently, I noticed that the subsections on "Annexation of Crimea and 2014 Geneva Pact" has become almost comically short. After further deletions by other editors, the subsection now does not even give the date of the 2014 Geneva Pact which is a part of the subsection title. My thought was to possibly revert to some safe point a few days ago so that the subsection would at least present a neutral version of the facts, and not to pretend that there is some sort of historical encapsulation of events magically between 21Feb2014 and 21March2014. Possibly you have had some thoughts about this neutral version issue. This is the diff of what looks like a safe point on the "Russia" page to find the last neutral reversion of the subsection:

There is even the extra clarification that there are no direct ties to Femen participating in the massacre.

We are not discussing other articles, we are merely discussing FEMEN itself. Alleging that someone participated in a what you call "a massacre" where many people were killed breaks Wikipedia's BLP policy, which states in a nutshell: "Material about living persons added to any Wikipedia page must be written with the greatest care and attention to verifiability, neutrality, and avoidance of original research."

The reference you added is not a credible source of information to back up the claim that the FEMEN leader participated in that "so called massacre." Please find credible sources and don't waste time on such speculation. If this is such a big deal to you, bring it up with other editors and see what they say. You know my point of view on the topic and the other editor you contacted as well . Images from Ivan Bohun article[edit]

I've raised the question on the talk page of the article. But it seems, you meant your talk page.

There are three images in this article. All based on hypothetical "imagenery likeness", which with changing title could easily resemble any Cossack. All very poorly drawn. The first two show that artists are not even familiar with Registered Cossack clothes. For example the one "during battle of Berestechko", clearly was supposed to be wearing kontush. Apart from cuts in the sleeves, it looks nothing like kontush. The third one is clearly drawn based on Bohun's image in movie "With Fire and Sword", which is better and in a way more accurate than the other two. But still the article would look better/more accurate without all of them.

Yes, there are a lot of articles with hypothetical portraits of people drawn way after their death. Yet they usually tend to be a work of art, with proper historical knowledge on the subject (for eg. Jan Matejko, Józef Brandt, Illia Repin etc). While images in this article look nothing like that. OK. Well, there is a lot of things need to be done along the way as part of the Ukrainian National Movement. That subject in wikipedia is poorly represented and sometimes even being associated with Nazism for whatever reason. I remember the political smear campaign of the Communist Party of Ukraine against the People's Movement of Ukraine on the television where members of the movement were presented as fascists, anti-Semites and other groundless claims. I can see why someone might get touchy over your speedy deletion tagging of the articless, but that isn't a way in which he should respond to you.. DGG, I appreciate your clarification. My speedy deletion were not aimed to disrupt wikipedia editing, the articles were without attention for some time and their issues were not improved. Would not you agree? Yet, you accused me in vandalism and did not even make an effort to explain it. Such templates like Donetsk People's Republic topics contain category like geography, while there is no clear definition of the political entity. Moreover, many other articles are disputed and artificially separated to confuse the reader and do not really reflect the real situation. Hello, again. With the correction reducing the subdivisions of Ukraine to the appropriate three levels I now have an additional question of the placement of the level of a particular council. It would seem to be that urban districts/districts in cities would be on the lowest level and not on the second level. To say it another way, if an urban district is subordinate to a city of regional significance, it can't be on the same level as a city of regional significance, right? So, why is it listed in the sidebar as such? Perhaps it's like a half-step between a city of regional signifance and the lower-level councils? Guideline and policy news

A discussion to workshop proposals to amend the administrator inactivity policy at Wikipedia talk:Administrators has been in process since late December 2016.
Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment 2016 closed with no consensus for implementing Pending changes level 2 with new criteria for use.
Following an RfC, an activity requirement is now in place for bots and bot operators.

Technical news

When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

The Arbitration Committee released a response to the Wikimedia Foundation's statement on paid editing and outing.

Obituaries

JohnCD (John Cameron Deas) passed away on 30 December 2016. John began editing Wikipedia seriously during 2007 and became an administrator in November 2009.

File permission problem with File:Tyasmyr RIver.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Tyasmyr RIver.jpg, which you've attributed to V. Stepovyy. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

Dear DDima, I am writing to you about the Kiev Metro article. I came across you on the project Ukraine page, and, since you say you know a lot about Ukraine and Kiev in particular, could you please, if you know it well, help me with the topic a bit? I have done extensive research on the topic (and expanded the article significantly), but I could not have found anything more, even though there is some information that I believe is true but is not cited. Some grammar and vocabulary issues can be fixed as well, since you are a native speaker of English (or at least you claim to be one). I am looking forward to hearing from you. Ukraine city division maps[edit]

I was recently discussing with someone on the urban districts of Ukraine article about some maps on the pages of Horlivka and Donetsk as just two examples. I was made aware eventually that you drew them. During the discussion I was asking this person whether when a city is divided if the entirety of its territory is divided into urban district. They told me that this is the case. However, the maps you've drawn show white space belonging to no district. I get the white space around the individual settlements (though maybe this isn't the best way to do that). I'm not sure about the white space on these maps where there are no seperate settlements, though. Is it simply that you don't know what urban districts these territorties belongs to? If that is the case, perhaps it would be best to not have the maps shown until we know definitively which territory belongs to which district. --Criticalthinker (talk) 04:54, 27 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Criticalthinker: Sorry for the delay in response, are you talking about this map right here File:Raions_of_Horlivka.png? Actually yes, the entire territory is divided. Think of New York City and it's boroughs, each geographical part of NYC belongs to one of them. Yes, I'm talking about that map and the one on [[6]] page. They are very confusing and misleading. I'm trying to figure out what they are trying to show if every party of a city with city districts belongs to a city district? I imagine they are trying to show the individual settlements and lower-level councils within these city districts? Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

2019 US Banknote Contest[edit]

US Banknote Contest

November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.
