My ER[edit]

Hello DaGizza,

I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful comments on my editor review. I have not followed your advice of editing science and maths, instead preferring to edit history and civics articles (which are tougher to learn ;) Cheers and thanks again!--May the Force be with you! Hello! I created the John Shillito Company article in response to an AfC request from 67.149.148.70. Then it vanished. :) It appears that you speedy-deleted it as an A8 (copyright violation). If that's the case, it should certainly be deleted, or at least stubbed until uncopyrighted text can be written; but I don't know the alleged source of the copyrighted text, and Web searches on a few likely phrases turn up nothing. Do you have any more information that you can provide me on this delete? I'll watch for a response on this page. Thanks! Kickaha Ota 17:04, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bot on Hindi wiki[edit]

Yes. You've guessed it right. Deeptrivia and myself are working to get the bot running on Hindi. He has sent me some data files, translated into unicode, and I was going to start testing with it. After the test runs are successful, will let the bot create articles just like here. - Ganeshk (talk) 13:58, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Urgent request for Insert box[edit]

Hi Dagizza, I urgently request you to use your admin privilages to get for all the Indians certain extremely important characters in the Insert toolbox (below every edit page) at the English wiki. You may find them at Mediawiki:Edittools. We need the following characters: T t D d R r S s N n each with a dot below, corresponding to the IAST characters for ट ड ऋ ष ण. We also need ̪, which can be used below t and d to give त द (used in IPA scheme). I have begged to dozens of sysops for this request, but no one paid any heed. Please reply me fast if you agree to it in principle, and I shall give you detailed steps how to proceed.Cygnus_hansa 20:35, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My User Page[edit]

Please restore my user page IMMEDIATELY. Otherwise I will report you for vandalism and abuse of administrator's priviliges. You stated on your user page that your contributions are Public domain. That means I can do with it whatever I like. Kidbrother 02:22, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Aryan818[edit]

Hi - I just read your message to this user, and I must take exception to your statement. Firstly, nobody "attacked" him just as he joined - he's been behaving like a WP:TROLL on Talk:Sikhism for a long time - the issue arose when I had to report him as such on WP:ANI. He has repeatedly violated WP:NPA, and several admins have warned him about this.

Also, there is still "just cause" for anyone to take offense at his username. "Aryan" is a name, granted. "818" is also L.A. area code - but it is uncanny that these two should be used in combination, because "818" and "888" are used as neo-Nazi symbols - thus his name forms a blatant neo-Nazi symbol to anybody. Who has verified if this person actually comes from LA, or that his name is really Aryan? And so what if it is - does this username stop being a neo-Nazi symbol, given the not-infrequent use of 818 and Aryan by neo-Nazis? He's entitled to have his own name - there are many nuts like Adolf Hitler and Stalin amongst Indian politicians - but not a WP username.

The offensive part is that in making this statement you insinuated that other admins don't know what they're talking about, and that this fellow is innocent - he's not, and he has to be made accountable for his trolling as well as getting this username changed. Mediawiki Edittools[edit]

Thanks for your help. Requesting at the talk page will not do--those guys never listen.

Go hence:

  • Go to MediaWiki:Edittools, then go to edit this page.
  • Go to section which is started by
  • Go to the line after the line of characters with a comma below, ie, ǪǫŲų etc. Create a new line below it.
  • Copy and paste this line I have typed below:
  • <charinsert> Ḍ ḍ Ḥ ḥ Ḷ ḷ Ḹ ḹ Ṃ ṃ Ṇ ṇ Ṛ ṛ Ṝ ṝ Ṭ ṭ Ṣ ṣ Ṅ ṅ </charinsert>
  • Now do to the section much below that starts with: . Go to the last line of this section, which looks like: <charinsert> ˈ ˌ ː ˑ </charinsert>   .
  • Append this list of weird dots with this one tiny character : ̪
  • Save the page.
  • In the edit summary and talk page, please mention : Added IAST characters and symbol for IPA dental consonant.
  • Done.

Hope you will be able to do it. Thanks in advance. Cygnus_hansa 11:46, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edittools[edit]

Thanks a lot. The IAST characters are done, but not the diacritic for dental consonant. Please ensure that this tiny character is inserted as requested above: ̪ (PS: It is rather difficult to trace it, but please bear with me.Cygnus_hansa 17:26, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder[edit]

You still havent inserted the symbol for IPA dental consonant. Cygnus_hansa 11:41, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oops sorry! I just checked the sourcepage at MediaWiki:Edittools and found that you had made the insertion. But it is NOT visible on my browser. I have an alternative to suggest. Please insert these two combination symbols for त द at the very beginning of the IPA list, ie, before ʈ ɖ . The two symbols are : t̪ d̪ . I guarantee that these will be visible, since the tiny underbridge symbol is well-attached with t and d. You may remove the lone ̪ symbol that you inserted earlier.Cygnus_hansa 12:01, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Work done. Thanks a lot for your help.

Assessment[edit]

I was thinking about that since so many other projects have it but I really think it is wasted energy. Instead of assessing articles, editors could be editing and writing other articles. Besides we can barely get participation in Hinduism article of the week and peer review. Plus, Hinduism has lost FA status.--D-Boy 19:28, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mortgageboard deletion[edit]

I was in the process of updating the Mortgageboard page that was one of the first niche job board sites on the web. Please alow me the time to post the full info and I believe you will see its relevance. It is a rather unique subject but there is really nothing of note on Wikipedia concerning the subject and I was hoping to enrich the wiki-community with the content.--Tkaul1224 07:29, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What defines notability?[edit]

Several pioneering sites in the niche job board industry are notable, though they may not have the individual traffic #'s you would see with generic boards. How do we as a wikipedia community give these sites the credit and footnote in history they deserve and researches the access to these sites that they need?--Tkaul1224 00:32, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Have you seen "UK Hindu Identity" proposed deletion?[edit]

ave you seen the article

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_Hindu_Identity

and discussion about its proposed deltion?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/UK_Hindu_Identity#.5B.5BUK_Hindu_Identity.5D.5D

Please take a look. If you have a view about the article, please state that in the discussions.

The article addresses a difficult topic which is very non-PC. The British Hindus feel that they are invisible; they are supposed to be included in the term "Asian", however that is the term that UK Press has used for referring to rioting Pakistani/Bangaldesi youths etc.

I believe that it is a significant issue and the facts about it should be available to Wikipedia readers. --ISKapoor 03:24, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disagree with using Infobox Aust school private on Sydney Grammar School[edit]

I disagree with your proposed use of the Infobox Aust school private on Sydney Grammar School and , indeed, elsewhere. The Secondary school infobox is used standardly across the board for GPS, CAS and ISA schools as the best infobox for the respective - and indeed, all - schools. Purely because the Aust school private infobox is there does not mean that it is the best one to use for private schools: the current "Affiliations" line is better than "denomination"; "slogan" is very crass; "key people" rendered inspecific when compared to the wide options in the secondary school infobox such as "Headmaster", "Principal" and "rector"; "num_employ" is the same as "faculty" in the SSI; "revenue" is irrelevant; "products" crass and unspecific yet again (of course the products are students!); while all the rest of the lines are in the Secondary school infobox. Cheers, Jpeob 00:24, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It was a vandal who changed the name of NKP Salve, and it stayed there for a month before you caught it today. The way the article is at the moment removing the story, as you did, seems the right thing to do. Tintin (talk) 12:18, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Formulas[edit]

Hi, I've ran across your recent question at the help desk ("Rydberg constant"), and wanted to explain something about formulas: The browser can display a formula either as text (html) or as an image (PNG). html is small and cannot handle all the symbols; PNG is larger, nicer and powerful, but due to its size it is sometime clumsy and cumbersome (when appearing in a line of text). The browser's choice of which format to use depends mainly on the user's preference settings, in the math tab. The default is, if I'm not mistaken, "HTML if possible or else PNG", which displays html unless the formula contents objects that html cannot represent. With this setting, formulas that are too simple will appear smaller. In case the larger form is desired for a simple formula, there are some ways to "trick" the browser into rendering the formula as PNG. The most common trick here on the English Wikipedia is to add \,\! at the end of the formula. These represent characters that html doesn't recognize (forcing PNG rendering) but which, together, don't actually display (leaving the formula intact).

You may also want to take a look at Help:Formula. I hope this was helpful. -- Meni Rosenfeld (talk) 17:43, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
