Bonjour[edit]

Cordialement. --JCAILLAT (talk) 21:26, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Old Dutch Church, and nrhp hds[edit]

Hi Daniel, glad to see u at work on that one, as I am partial to the Minard Lafever ones and would be happy to see a good full article there. I was afraid i might cause an edit conflict for u, but thot i should look up and add the NHLSUM reference. I won't edit more there now, will look forward to see what you develop. I've done a good amount of pic-taking recently in cny, by the way, will be able to add pics to many articles.

About nrhp hds, i know u r somewhat aware of there having been some contention btwn me and another editor in CT articles. With time and a good amount of communication, we have made a lot of progress and have basic agreement for most types of nrhp hds which were originally all in contention. There remain a number of open merger/split proposals to address and close with decisions, and some other issues open as well or yet to be discussed, now with more moderation on both sides. The other editor and i agreed we would take it down several notches, and agree to abide by third party decisions. In particular we'd be happy if you would be willing to help mediate/arbitrate/judge: would you consider this?

There is now a pretty large body of past discussion at Talk:List of RHPs in CT including an RFC there and including a corresponding archive, at Talk:List of RHPs in VT, at Talk:List of RHPs in RI, and at individual NRHP HD articles and town/village/hamlet articles referenced from those. I wouldn't want to ask anyone to go through all of that, and a lot was said which does not need to be rehashed. What we'd appreciate is someone willing to be an invited discussion leader and then closer in merger/split proposals in selected specific cases, to be decided on the merits of information about the extent of geographical and historical overlap in those cases. It would be important, I think, to have at least some decisions close in favor of merger against my own previously stated opinions (and I would hope for some decisions closing in favor of splitting/no merger, too). What I myself have argued is that two separate articles should be allowed, at least until adequate information is developed, and then a merger proposal could go either way. Additional information has developed in some cases now and some would probably be ready for a closing-type decision, perhaps following one more flurry of moderate discussion. Would you be willing to help, in a limited way, in resolving some of these, in that kind of role? doncram (talk) 16:30, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:TPM logo.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:TPM logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 04:47, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum[edit]

Hi Daniel Case/Archive 13 7/24/2009-12/25/2009,

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".

Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.

  • Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
  • It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
  • Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
  • I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

What you can do now:

1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
2. If you're a law student,
(You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)
3. Introduce yourself to me. Law editors on Wikipedia are a scarce commodity. Do knock on my talk page if there's an article you'd like help on.

SoWhy 08:14, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Would an article like this be notable?[edit]

I'm thinking of making an article for Albany streets along the lines of articles on streets in other cities, such as List of streets in Baltimore, Maryland, and List of streets in Hamilton, Ontario, probably more like the last one than the others. Listing only the important streets and their name changes, who/what they are named for, historical significance, notable buildings along the street, etc. I thought of this because several of our articles mention by name certain streets and it might be good to have a central article they can link to. That's my thought. I didnt know if these other list of street articles were frowned upon. Your opinion is appreciated. There are lots of sources I can use including the NYS museum website on colonial Albany history, their page about street names has been used several times, including in Clinton Avenue Historic District and Pastures Historic District talking about name changes (the entire state museum website is down until Monday for maintenance so all links are out right now).Camelbinky (talk) 19:04, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Panel[edit]

Thanks for your kind words, I do remember our conversation at the conference. Yes, getting editors to work together can sometimes be a real challenge, it can be like herding cats! Not surprising really, since each Wikipedia editor has to be self-sufficient, a self-starter and all those things. I think that a few of our editors probably never look at the Project talk page or the Project page. I may send a few people a reminder that sometimes really important and interesting things come up there, so it is worth checking in every so often. It's really a delicate thing to handle other people right, not to be too pushy, and to respect people's individual strengths while still trying to get the overall project into reasonable shape as it grows. Good luck with the Fashion and Urban studies and planning Projects. Actually as it happens I do know a fair bit about fashion and fashion history, but I am not active in that on Wikipedia, although once in a great while I do a few edits to a garment-related (like boardshorts or fabric-related page (like linen). Question[edit]

I'm getting articles going for all the Van Rensselaers that were patroons but at least a few of them were named Kiliaen or Jeremias, and none of them have suffixes (i.e. Jr, II, III...). How do I distinguish them in article names, especially since some of them have no known birth or death dates? Would Kiliaen van Rensselaer (fourth patroon of Rensselaerswyck) be prudent (and if that's the case, should the first one get a rename to conform to that system?) Seems too much, but it may be the only way... Let me know what you think. wadester16 15:49, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sulgrave club.[edit]

Greetings, Daniel Case. I'm interested in creating a page on the Sulgrave club in the District of Columbia, in Washington D.C. I have a sketch of the article worked out in my sandbox, but I'm not sure it's ready for creation yet. As you are in the WikiProject related to National Register of Historic Places, and an administrator, I was hoping you could help me; if there are any tweaks or fixings you think could be done to improve the page so it is its best before creation, I'd appreciate the information. Where do I find the NRHP Reference# and the exact date this was added to the NRHP? PLEASE DELETE MY ACCOUNT[edit]

Hello, admin. Could you please delete my account completly, every trace that I had of it?

Hey thanks, but is it possible that you can remove every trace of me, like my account nevered existed?

I will respond here since I deleted your talk page. If you're asking me to oversight all your contribs, that's beyond the limit of the oversight policy. It might be possible to selectively delete them from each article. But the right to vanish has never included the ability to make all your contribs go away.

What you might want to consider doing is asking a bureaucrat to rename the account, if you want to distance yourself from it. Daniel Case (talk) 18:07, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GoRight[edit]

Hi Daniel, can you give just a little more clarification of your reason for unblocking GoRight? "Per Hersfold's comment" is a little cryptic, especially since Hersfold never actually said he wanted GoRight to be unblocked. Thanks - Short Brigade Harvester Boris (talk) 03:06, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. I had interpreted "another admin can review your request" as not being an instruction to unblock, but that an admin could review the request and decide one way or the other. I can see how it might be taken another way. Short Brigade Harvester Boris (talk) 03:19, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Daniel. I appreciate the assistance. I still had a bit of trouble with the autoblock but Mangojuice took care of that. As you can see I am working again. --GoRight (talk) 04:52, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Clearly unfair block and admins taking sides[edit]

Hi Daniel case,

I see you are very active on the incident boards and there was recently an incident here [1] which I reported with all the evidence needed and I also explained the situation, yet a senior admin took sides against me and even blocked me when there was clear evidence against the other user and I had done nothing wrong, In fact a number of 'Indian' editors shad been canvassing against me, including with that administrator that blocked me, such as here [2] and this can be easily verified. I would appreciate it if you could help or advise me on this matter. Regards. Khokhar (talk) 23:27, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Laurie Geltman.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Aspects (talk) 16:21, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

re Wikipedian usernames editors have expressed concern over[edit]

Hi Daniel,

I understand you are only trying to ensure the safety of Wiki. The name sydtrolls is one I have used for over 15 years and it is a non computer reference. I have no plans on disrupting any pages. I simply wanted to use my screen name. I have used the same name in Lostpedia and felt it would be accepted here. So far I have only made one edit and that was to add an actor in the "bit parts" to the American Werewolf in London page. Which, I have noticed has already been taken down. I am new to editing and have only contributed a few pictures and made one change in Lostpedia. I am a casual reader and appreciate Wiki. Honestly, I am still trying to figure out how to contribute more. If this is not satisfactory please let me know.

Sincerely, Kevin sydtrollsSydtrolls (talk) 18:47, 2 September 2009 (UTC)sydtrollsSydtrolls (talk) 18:47, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

re re Wikipedian usernames editors have expressed concern over[edit]

Daniel, I am not sure if I am supposed to respond on my page or yours. I don't believe that a a username request for comment should be necessary. Since sydtrolls does not fall under any of the other 3 specifically disallowed user names, I assume that you may consider my name to be "considered outright trolling". If that is correct, are you assuming I plan on disrupting Wikipedia? Please take a second to Google sydtrolls and you will find my youtube channel, Ih8mudd forum posts and even an old eharmoney account. I believe I should be judged on the quality of the work I do (which I admit is currently poor as I am still learning) not the incorrect meaning of my user name. Which for record actually stands for Syd trips and rolls. Sydtrolls (talk) 19:28, 2 September 2009 (UTC)sydtrolls[reply]

Read this over?[edit]

I just finished a months long rewrite of Kiliaen van Rensselaer (Dutch merchant). I'm wondering if you'd be interested in reading it over and possibly copyediting it? Don't feel obligate, but I'd like to bring it to GAN sometime in the next month, so a fresh pair of eyes would be helpful. upstateNYerformerly wadester16 02:12, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Removal of all non de jure diplomatic Missions in List Articles[edit]

I would like to seek your view as to whether we should eliminate from the lists of diplomatic missions by sending/receiving countries all references to representative offices of sending states that do not have formal diplomatic missions with the host states. This would affect a large number of articles which relate to Taiwan, Palestine, Kosovo and other states. Please provide your views here. You have received this notice because you have regularly contributed to either kind of article, or have had dealings with editors concerning the conduct of this dispute. Thank you. reason?[edit]

Would u pls tell me why someone called Blueboy96 blocked my ip address and you declined my request of lifting thet block?

!!!=[edit]

just this? i even dont know who is that mr Adollahi. which edit of this person is/was similar to mine exactly? which page(s)? if a hacker uses my ip then you'll blocke me? any one can block someone else just becoz he/she thinks that someone's edits are similar to someone else's edits? it is really funny.

2nd[edit]

No i didnt, but i do right now, what will i get if i do? i was blocked for a couple of days. may valuable times was robbed by someone. also your review was wrong as well as that boy who blocked me. i asked you which page(s) are similar to my edits? i wanna visit those edits myself and see weather they r really similar or not! but anyway the problam is: this system of blocking is wrong, tell me pls how can i prove i dont know that mr abdollahi? who is responsible for this unacceptable blocking? how can i get my times back???

3rd[edit]

Ok dear, i wrote a messege in his talk page, hope i'll get an answer, some one should do his job right and see we r NOT same persons, also i need that apology as well. about my time, its not about money, charge ... it is about my freedom (that i guess you know we always have concern about it coz we r iranians :) if you were in middle east you could understand how much is freedom important for us) that somebody has stolen it becoz of his wrong ideas about me, am loosing my motivation becoz some one thinks wrong things about me which am not responsible for it, why should i pay for that? i just want my freedome of edit becoz am working hard in wiki as a responsible good editor. also i have a question dear, how can some one be an administrator? tnx for your answers and patience and sorry for my broken english :) regards,

Pournick[edit]

Just had a look at that IP ... there is definitely a possibility that this was collateral damage from that sockmaster's block. Maybe have a checkuser take a look, just to be safe? Blueboy96 20:01, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Idiota[edit]

Hi Daniel,

I picked the username idiota from Catholic tradition - it was the pen name of a Catholic in the 900's. There is a wiki article about him here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiota

Calling myself an idiot is intended to be in the spirit of Socrates, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socrates who upon being told by the Oracle that no one is wiser than he, concluded that on the cosmic scale we're all pretty much on the same level.

777 is a play on being not - 666, as well as by way of commemorating the Motu Proprio of 7/7/2007 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summorum_Pontificum I hope this is ok?

God bless,

65.95.139.168 report comment[edit]

Hi, the comment you made on the 65.95.139.168 report as "Edits are not vandalism" I think is wrong. Most of the edits to me, look like vandalism. If I'm mistaken, please contact me. Thanks. Chevy Impala 2009 (Sign me!) 01:34, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've also looked at the edits again. The first one is arguably an attempt to add (unsourced) information. The 2nd I was suspicious by the name... Randy Meare --> Randy Mare. The 3rd and 4th edits are pure vandalism. Could you look at this IPs contributions again? They all look like vandalism to me. If you say I'm mistaken, no worries - but I'd appreciate it if you would just double check their contributions. Thanks -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 02:32, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Here are the edits made on 15 September between 01:17 and 01:54 (although the previous edit on that IP at 02:12 on 14 September was removing information, it could be someone else):
  1. 01:17, 15 September 2009 (hist) (diff) Emirati people ‎ (→Numbers of Emiratis) added "The Emirais are know to have small dicks."
  2. 01:21, 15 September 2009 (hist) (diff) Dubai ‎ (→Transportation) added "Dubai's oil factorys has enough oil to fill texas."
  3. 01:24, 15 September 2009 (hist) (diff) Dubai ‎ (→History) added "In the late 1740's Dubai discovered they had oil. That's why they are a rich country now."
  4. 01:47, 15 September 2009 (hist) (diff) Strathroy ‎ (→Places) added "Strathroy was founded by Randy Lauffer, a loyal Canadian and named the town after his daughter." - A Google Search does not confirm this
  5. 01:49, 15 September 2009 (hist) (diff) Strathroy ‎ (→Places) changed "Randy Lauffer" to "Randy Meare" - again, a Google search does not confirm this
  6. 01:54, 15 September 2009 (hist) (diff) Strathroy ‎ (→Places) added "Strathroy is home of Cuddy Farm, a famous Canadian farm that grows corn." - A Google search confirms there is a Cuddy Farm in Strathroy in Canada - but after the previous vandalisms, I assumed that this was also vandalism.
It was suspicious behaviour over the course of 37 minutes that made me think a block might be in order. As you say, nothing further has happened on that IP since 01:54 according to the Special:Contributions. I just wanted to show you that I hadn't made an arbritary decision to warn and report this IP!
Anyhoo, unless the IP is used again for vandalism, that's the end of it! Regards, -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 04:08, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Albany Union Station[edit]

Would you be willing to move Albany Union Station to Union Station (Albany, New York), I cant because the second name already exists as a redirect to the first, and it said I need an admin to do it. The second name is prefered in my opinion because 1- it keeps the format already existing for all the other similarly named stations on List of union stations and at Union Station; and 2- the station, when in operation or afterwards, was not listed as "Albany Union Station" in any newspaper or publication I can find (other than the NRHP), its a made up name, most likely created by the NRHP to disambiguate from any other "Union Station".Camelbinky (talk) 19:26, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! The article was on my watchlist and I just noticed Daniel Case implementing the move. Came here to comment that there is nearly complete Requested Move discussion about similar case of Springfield Union Station at Talk:Springfield, Massachusetts (Amtrak station)‎#Requested move, and recently completed fully discussed other requested moves, going differently than how you are just now leaning. In my view, it seems in the past that the "Union Station" name was misapplied to places where the actual station name is different. It is not necessary or desirable to change article names to make a disambiguation or other Wikipedia list look better in some way. For example, an NRHP list can display the NRHP program name for a place while pipelinking to a differently named article. In particular what shows in the Union Station disambiguation page is currently Albany Union Station and that is fine if Albany Union Station is the name of the station. If the primary name for the station is Union Station, and the article will be changed to show that, then your move is fine, though, and the Union Station list can be updated. But if the primary name for the station is Albany Union Station, and that is what is shown first in bold in the lede of the article, then it should be moved back, in my view. (To Camelbinky: Also, I'm not checking now, but I believe that Albany Union Station is the NRHP name for the place, and whatever is the NRHP name for the place should be kept in the NRHP infobox, even if the primary name is now deemed to be different.) That's my view, anyhow. Happy to discuss further here or for there to be a formal Requested Move discussion if it would be helpful to get more input. doncram (talk) 01:26, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As I stated above I have not ever seen the station referred to as anything other than "Union Station" (or "Union Depot" in Albany Revisited by Don Rittner) in books, articles, in references to the building today by the various bank companies that have owned it through the years (currently BofA), or in newspaper articles in the Albany Times Union. If someone finds a different name actually used by the owner of the station when it was a station then ok, but I think the move was needed since only the NRHP listing had it named as "Albany Union Station". Being a "union station" in the generic term means that more than one railroad served the same station, this particular station was a "union station" along with having its name as the Union Station, I assume but do not know for sure that it was the NY Central who actually owned it for most of the buildings existance as a station.Camelbinky (talk) 16:14, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, i updated the lede in Union Station (Albany, New York) and updated its mention in the Union Station disambiguation page. Keep in mind that you can use the wp:RM service process to request either quick expected-to-be uncontroversial moves (no discussion required) or to open discussion for possibly controversial moves (with discussion to happen at Talk page of the article proposed for move, and with invited comment and closing by non-involved RM people). I consider all train station moves to be possibly controversial, because in fact there has been disagreement in past cases, although I don't think any more notice or discussion is needed for this one, now. doncram (talk) 16:34, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I saw the problem that user De Sable is having, being blocked under the accusation that he is a sockpuppet of user Top Gun. And he requested to be unblocked. But you declined him. I would like to clear some things up. I am user Top Gun and De Sable is not a sockpuppet of mine. He is an innocet user. You can confirm this by conducting a checkuser operation or whatever you do. Check his IP also or whatever. I am coming out clean on this because I can not stand by and let an innocent user be accused of something he didn't do. This is a result because user Nick-D is on some strange personal crusade against me to the point that he already blocked one other user that is not me but he was convinced that he is me, that other user is 98.156.123.135. I tried to tell him this but he wouldn't listen to me. You can check this other user also by checking where his IP is originating from in comparison with my IP. User Nick-D has become out of control on the question of blocking users, his blocking too many of them, it's come to the point that a few days ago he blocked himself also. In any case, these two users shold be unblocked immediatly and you should block me insted, I would take whatever punishment you have but don't drag other users into this.89.216.239.65 (talk) 13:48, 18 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

IP sock[edit]

You just semi-protected Sister Roma. The IP editor who most recently joined the fray is by their own admission a sock of the banned user User:Fredrick day, see [3]. Please block the IP addresses 193.35.132.148 and 193.35.132.149. They've claimed on their talks that it's a dynamic IP, but I think that's misdirection. They've been merrily vandalising while evading a ban for months. Fences&Windows 23:44, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm doing an overhaul of this. Is the NRHP app considered public domain (i.e. can I steal quotes and use in the article?)? I think we discusses this once before, but I can't remember. upstateNYer 23:49, 6 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

content dispute[edit]

Why have you blocked an IP editor for a content dispute with Benboji? I can't say I'm impressed with his edits to that page either and neither is another editor, so why are you favouring one editor in a content dispute? Also are you aware it's the orange mobile network and you are likely blocking thousands of people? --Cameron Scott (talk) 08:14, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cameron Scott, your personal grudge is both distasteful and misplaced. That banned editors evading blocks are iusing socks are defended by you tells a lot more about what seems to be your personal gripe than any concern for improving Wikipedia articles. You have utterly failed time and again to show any COI editing was taking place yet you show every sign of continuing to beat a dead horse in hopes that your version of reality will be newly shared by others. That simply hasn't happened likely because it isn't true. Sorry but show with reliable sources that anything on the Sister Roma article is false. I'll give you a hint, some anon targeted the article (I believe a year ago) so the entire thing was stubbed and rebuilt. yet here you are defending a banned editor who seems only to harass and Smallbones who despite numerous requests has no actual evidence of any COI content - at all. Whether it comes from me - someone who you apparently don't approve and I don't care why - or any number of other editors/admins the same answer is apt. Show there is actually something wrong with the article or move on. If you can't seem to let this go we can find some other way to help redirect your energies. -- Banjeboi 09:58, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • what* banned editor? I see no evidence that the IP is an banned editor, that's my point. Who is this banned editor? where was he banned? Where is the evidence? we can find some other way to help redirect your energies - you keep making those threats - as I've told you again and again, head over to AN/I if you have a problem with my actions - the last three or four times you tried it, it went nowhere, I'm happy for you to do so again because I'm happy with my actions. Nobody at the LGBT project did when you tried your bullyboy tactics there. --Cameron Scott (talk) 13:42, 8 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If you were a bit less focussed on assuming bad faith on my, and apparently anyone who doesn't oppose me, part you may have noticed this which links to a self-disclosure of a self-admitted sock of a banned user. It would be more helpful if you focussed on content rather than contributors. -- Banjeboi 03:16, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That indicates that at some stage last year, the account Frederick day used a mobile internet ISP used by over eight million people. It means nothing, the system only has a limited number of IP addresses and assigns them dynamically to users as they use their phones. --Cameron Scott (talk) 08:03, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It failed the duck test, apparently. Next time they are blocked you can appeal in their defense. -- Banjeboi 14:51, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I imagine these are the same user, just he forgot to log in on one occasion. I strongly recommend unblocking with this in mind as he has withdrawn his legal threats. Stifle (talk) 18:53, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I also support unblocking. However, to clarify, the article has been edited in like fashion by several IPs for a period of some months, all apparently the same person. See [5]. Note that my April 10 edit removed "Mr.s" and other evidnece of COI edits. That's not a big thing, and I don't want to make a federal case out of it, but I think it's reasonable to ask that only one account be used, and that the user confine himself to the talk page. I've pleaded with one or more of the past IPs for quite a while to bring his/her concerns to the talk page but only in the past day has he/she done so, and for the purpose of making a legal threat. --JohnnyB256 (talk) 19:32, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure myself, but I had a look at Template:Did you know/Queue/1 and the user appear to copy and paste everything across and not just the hooks. I think you should do the same. And if you view it in edit mode then you'll see that you need to add something stating the Daniel Case made the update. Jolly Ω Janner 23:53, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, review the recent Wikipedia Takes Manhattan, plan for the next stages of projects like Wikipedia at the Library and Wikipedia Loves Landmarks, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, for example particular problems posed by Wikipedia articles about racist and anti-semitic people and movements (see the September meeting's minutes).

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and generally enjoy ourselves and kick back.

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

To keep up-to-date on local events, you can also join our mailing list.

Hallo Daniel, I am preparing the x-lation of the Nyack post office article into DE at the moment and looked into the village's article. Please stop by there, I guess the sections Historical markers and Landmarks and places of interest should be rearranged somehow since they don't have to do with demographics. your bad faith[edit]

"And you wonder why we're suspicious"??

Indeed. I find you very suspicious. I was clear; I used to edit with a username, but I got immensely tired of wikipedia, of all the games and nonsense . Just for you, oh danny boy, I've made one. Feel free to do whatever you like to me, because once I've left this note to you, I'll do what I did with my previous account and just salt the password anyways. Wikipedia long ago ceased to be worthwhile, and the epidemic of WP:BITE style behavior and random, unfounded sockpuppet accusations that trumped-up little trolls with far too much power and far too little accompanying brainpower (such as yourself) jump on as an excuse to be abusive is nothing short of breathtaking.

It's small wonder that Wikipedia is losing editors at an alarming rate, with people like you behaving in ways designed deliberately to drive new and old editors away.

For the record, I'm not the first editor, but I was the editor case of the page I link to above. I see you are as always too stupid to comprehend the idea that a good samaritan, seeing the usual trumped-up trolls that comprise the majority of wikipedia's administrator corps participating in their usual gang attack mentality, might offer a response to potentially get the less than 1% and falling (of which I know you're NOT a part) of honest and decent admins to take a look. That is, if any of them are left at all.

So I shall simply leave you congratulations on being just another of wikipedia's problem trolls who, sadly, gained admin weaponry and abuses it regularly. MilwaukeeForever (talk) 14:12, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I need hardly tell you that not all Milwaukeeans wish to be associated with the above remarks, Daniel. If we ever meet in meatspace, I'll be glad to buy you a Sprecher Brewery product of your choice! --Orange Mike | Talk 15:22, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK problem[edit]

Hello! Your submission of Kingston Stockade District at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! LittleMountain5 15:41, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just finished an expansion on this article and was wondering if you could give it a look and possibly suggest some improvements. I don't have much experience in writing about architecture, but decided to give it a go after falling in love with the ruins last time I was in New York. AniMate 21:03, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think I missed the window on DYK, and I haven't really contributed much in that project, so maybe next time. I've noticed the majority of the NRHP entries are basically two or three sentences that only say when they were built and when they were added to the registry. While I doubt all will be as interesting as I found the hospital, there are others that will likely be good DYK candidates in the future. I was planning on going through New York and working on those, but have decided to switch to the Los Angeles area instead. I think it will be a lot easier for me to track down information if I have to drive somewhere rather than ask people on the other side of the country. Still, thanks for the help. This should be an interesting area to work on. AniMate 04:22, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please feel free to write about the building and nominate it for DYK. Credit is not too important to me, I just think it's a really interesting place. Should you find yourself in NYC, go to Roosevelt Island at night. Very creepy and beautiful at the same time. AniMate 09:11, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for adding the building information and for the DYK nom. Life is pretty hectic right now and I wouldn't have really had time to do this without your help. Thanks again. AniMate 23:28, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Assume good faith[edit]

Have you ever read assume good faith? In a nutshell it says:

  • Unless there is clear evidence to the contrary, assume that people who work on the project are trying to help it, not hurt it.
  • If criticism is needed, discuss editors' actions, but avoid accusing others of harmful motives without clear evidence.

Now we know WP:DUCK is only an essay and is not clear evidence, and could not be used to support your decline here. Now could you please explain to this new editor why they were blocked after two edits, neither of which was disruptive. --Domer48'fenian' 18:58, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Don't be a condescending dick, Domer. You know Daniel Case has read AGF; there's also such a thing as "not being a fool". AGF is not required in all cases. Tan | 39 19:08, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AGF is not required in all cases, yes I agree, like obvious vandalism or disruption! That is not what we have here. Now I made a comment on the unblock request, and I asked a reasonable question. Now if I'd wanted your opinion I'd have gone onto your talk page, but I didn't because your condescending dick. In your case AGF is not required, so let Daniel Case respond to a valid concern I have with their handling of this unblock request. --Domer48'fenian' 20:28, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, but I still need for Tan to do the same. Daniel Case (talk) 12:46, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Both of you apologize to each other, and stop insulting each other on my talk page. Until then I'm not responding to any request. Daniel Case (talk) 22:10, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Don't be too surprised. Danny Case is another of the psychotic Judge Dredd or Queen of Hearts "Guilty until... aw fuck it just guilty" types that pervade the ranks of Wikipedia's administration and ruin the encyclopedia today.
Another Houston-area Comcast account? Daniel Case (talk) 01:35, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please address the concerns I have raised thanks. --Domer48'fenian' 17:03, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I really wish Tan would apologize, given his status ... but apparently he won't. So, since you have, you deserve one:
  • The first edit was a little atypical for a first edit. New editors usually don't make changes so sweeping to a potentially controversial article.
  • The article in question is covered by the Troubles ArbCom case, as noted elsewhere. To me this limits the good faith we might otherwise assume.
  • The wording of this edit does seem to leave it open that someone else might have put him up to this. Daniel Case (talk) 20:14, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I also give weight to the fact that two other admins in good standing (i.e., I have no reason to distrust their motives) have looked at this. One made the block, the other upheld it.
  • If someone else wants to unblock and keep an eye on him, I have no objections. But since I don't edit those articles and don't know the habits of regular editors there, I would prefer that someone who does do that. Daniel Case (talk) 20:14, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that Daniel Case, and if I may draw your attention to some minor considerations you may not be aware off.

  1. While I agree to some degree with the point you make, I would not at all consider it to be so sweeping or potentially controversial as you suggest. It has in fact be reverted three times [8] [9] [10] and this was done without any discussion at all.
  2. As to your second point, I really have to point you to this section here I opened for this editor. This illustrates the level of disruption which is tolerated on articles covered by the Troubles ArbCom. The editors two contributions were in no way disruptive. They also indicate that they have edited before as an IP with no adverse reaction. This was their first account? They used the talk page to explain their edit.
  3. On this point I really have an issue. The editors who were accused of this, one being me and the other being BigDunc have both had editors and Admins come forward and say that this not our style at all. When you compare editors and admins who may have an issue with us, and who regularly edit in this area say they don't believe it was us I'd take that over admins who don't know us from adam. In addition, some of the accusations have now been withdrawn.
  4. On the final point, the editor who made the block withdrew their accusation, and the editor who up held the block has been cautioned about their accusations and attitude towards a named group of editors.
  5. In light of the above, the editor should a) not have been blocked, and b) should not still be blocked. If they were to remain indef blocked then the current list on their page of genuine disruptive editors should all be blocked. If the editor turns out to be a sock or a disruptive editor so be it block away. They will slip up, they always do. Block them and back it up with evidence, that is how we have had all the sock, meat and puppet masters blocked. In light of the discussions in light of this block, the fickle finger of faith could be pointed in the direction of editors who wanted suspicion to be pointed in a particular direction. Personally I like the editor to edit, and if they slipped up, trust me, I'd take pleasure in shopping them. However, we must first and foremost assume good faith and that should have been given precedence over WP:DUCK which had no supporting evidence. To me that's reasonable? --Domer48'fenian' 21:06, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

SPI[edit]

Thanks for inspiring me on that. I read what you said on the AFD and I figured that I might as well dive into the realm of SPI. It's good to know that you're also watching out for people like them. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 19:36, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I was actually going to notify you with a message stating something along the lines of "Back me up please." I also have dealt with this user today, so it only makes sense that I talk. First an AFD then an SPI today, I wonder what will be next. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 19:50, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh thank god you're on. I was wondering if you have been watching the threads as it seems like GaGa is writing in the style of Bravedog. I've also noticed that GaGa is attacking my credibility, something which Bravedog attempted to do. Thanks for the difference now, as you are completing what I was doing an hour or so ago. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 00:11, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No one outside of GaGa is attacking your credibility, and you may both be right that this is an obvious sockpuppet. Don't overreact to that ANI thread, Kevin. I'm merely telling you to try not to use an unproven allegation as part of an AfD !vote. Patience is your key here; simply wait for the CU results. Tan | 39 00:14, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I understand Tan. Bravedog thought that I was going hysterical on the deletion of the Perm club incident only because I wondered why I wasn't notified for something that I created. I know it is a common courtesy, but not telling one of the most contributing editors to an article is a good way to further your own opinion as they won't be there to defend something that they must like, thus increasing the likelihood that it will get deleted. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 00:27, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to thank you for the help that you provided me at SPI. I never thought that my first one would be so stressful, but I learned quick. Thanks again for backing me up against his determined defense. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 02:53, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I really enjoyed the edit summary part and the fact that he communicated with himself when we pointed it out. I think Bravedog was the dirty hand sock as he actually used it to upload a photo of his genitalia onto the site, but it seems it was deleted (thank god). I tried to keep my cool as I knew if I blew up he would try to say that I am incompetent because I blew up and he would try to discount my accusations. I did find it odd though that he was really agressive when the other SPIs I looked at had no response. Well it's good to know that I got one of the more stressful SPIs out of the way as I now won't be suprised when something bad like that happens again. Thanks again. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 15:28, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can you send me that file?[edit]

You had mentioned way back that you had a file that you marked of Oakwood Cemetery (Troy, New York). It just passed GA recently and I'd like to bring it to FAC soon. Can you send me that file if you still have it? You can note the changes in the article, too, since it was upgraded to GA. upstateNYer 22:59, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia vandal banned numerous times is back on Wikipedia[edit]

There is this Wikipedia vandal named Azayas4reel who has been banned for vandalism and self-promotion. He takes on a new alias and tries to edit the same article. He is doing it again. In total, he has been banned about 14 times because of sock puppetry. One of his sock puppets was Penumbraborealis. He is now editing under the name Penumbras. He keeps trying to vandalism the following article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banjee. Please ban him again and prevent him from committing further vandalism on the site. Thank you. Notability and buildings[edit]

Hi Daniel, just thought I'd drop you a note because I'm thinking of creating a little article about a Long Island mansion, and as I don't do many articles on buildings, I thought I would ask your advice.

Basically, the mansion seems to have plenty of secondary sources available to establish notability, but it's not AFAIK on the National Register of Historic Places or any similar list. Does this mean it would be likely to be challenged by people with more experience writing about buildings? I don't want to go to the trouble of writing it, just to have it nominated for AfD or something. Gatoclass (talk) 01:29, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo, Daniel. There is an issue with the year when Salem was settled. The article says 1761; however Salem (village), New York claims 1761. Further, the village article claims that there was a rather big conflict which had to be settled by the national guard while the NRHP article says, the both groups were living in harmony. Do you have any further information before I am going to contact the village's hsitorian? --Matthiasb (talk) 17:27, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for replying so quickly. Well the lack of the National Guard shows that I just had too much Good Faith when I translated parts of the village article into DE some weeks ago. Embarassing for me :( However, the contact with the historian would be good. Maybe I can talk him to improve the history section of the village article himself... the village homepage seems not to have a page concerning history, it seems so some correct and hopely sourced additions would help. --Matthiasb (talk) 19:29, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I certainly can enlight the discrepancy of the year in which Salem was settled: it's Salem einself who is confusing us. This page is claiming 1761, while that page tells the year 1762. Tonight I will file my enquiry request to both the towns and villages historians and will keep you informed when answer got in. Until then or until some other item about my translations of your articles, bye. --Matthiasb (talk) 23:16, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Breakout Character[edit]

A BC is a minor character who becomes a major character. 2nd billed is a major character to begin with. Chuck Bass is widely considered to be the show's BC, as he went from a recurring character to a full cast member, and gets considerably more focus than he used to. Even the CB wikipedia page says that he "serves as" the show's breakout character. Drolz09 22:29, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, your point about the definition is fair. I don't think I agree about "stolen the spotlight" being the same thing though, because this term is very often used in reference to actors (and isn't that from an article about Meester?) rather than characters. Also, doesn't the fact that, however much Blair increased in importance, Chuck Bass increased way more, going from recurring to full regular, necessarily eclipse her as breakout character? And by the way, I like Blair, I'm not on some anti-Blair crusade, it just seems like a really silly thing to call her the breakout character. Drolz09 23:19, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There seems to be one guy who believes, against all reason, that Blair is a breakout character. You indicate that you also disagreed with this, but that he made a fuss when you deleted the entry. I would also not that, insofar as I am familiar with those shows, none of the other characters listed on the page support the claim that someone who starts as second billed can become a breakout character. Given that the two of us seem to agree on this basic precept, and that this other user has not showed up to complain again, I don't see why you insist on reverting me. Drolz09 22:34, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I would love to hear him explain himself, given that he is the only person I have ever heard claim that Blair is a breakout character, and I want to understand his rationale in this. Drolz09 22:40, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure, but you might be misunderstanding me. I'm not saying a character who only attains second billing can't be a breakout. I'm saying that a character who starts with second billing can't be a breakout. Or at least, there would need to be very clear evidence of a major shift in show dynamics (which there hasn't been on GG with respect to Serena and Blair) to support the claim. Advice for expanding a Historic District stub[edit]

Hi, I am looking to expand the Texas Technological College Historic District article with an ultimate goal of FA status but unsure what sections should be used. Looking over the only two GA historic districts, articles you have made a lot of contributions to, they both have the sections: Geography, History and Significant contributing properties. The first two sections solved most of my problems but the "Significant contributing properties" section is my largest hangup. For the Texas Tech district article, I'm looking to include: 29 buildings, one structure, one site, and one object. Since only four buildings are noncontributing should I not include them in that section or since there are so few contributing resources, rename the section and include the noncontributing properties? Thanks for any advice or suggestions! NThomas (talk) 02:26, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for making this one active. I made Asgardian aware of the RFC before I even posted it; he says he will likely post a response after the holidays (or at least after Christmas). Nightscream is also aware of the RFC. BOZ (talk) 07:03, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, BOZ already alerted me, and as you can see from that page, he pasted what I told him about my recent conflicts with Asgardian. Should I put my signature there too? I'm unfamiliar with the significance of doing so. Is it to affirm that I'm one of the people who's had problems with him? Happy Holidays! Nightscream (talk) 15:34, 24 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'll sign the Users endorsing area. As for a testimonial with diffs, well, I'm not an "outsider", but I did detail my conflicts with Asgardian over the past year to BOZ, who then pasted what I told him onto that page already, so I think that's enough. Breakout character[edit]

Sorry for the late response. I think the problem is that the article's opening definition appears to be inaccurate. The article asserts that a breakout character has to begin as a minor character. I haven't found that to be the case when examining its sources.

According to the definition in the article, a breakout character is a figure who "evolves from a minor role to a major role." Having examined the citation which immediately follows, I did not find that definition in the source. I merely found the following:

"Originally, the Arthur 'Fonzie' Fonzarelli character was to be a comic relief dropout type, put there for comic contrast to the whitebread Richie and his pals. He was a tall, lanky guy, but when Henry Winkler blew everybody away at his reading, they decided to cut Fonzie down to Henry's size. Ultimately, Winkler molded the character around himself and everybody, including Ron Howard, realized this would be the show's 'breakout' character."

At no point in that description is Fonzarelli described as originally having a "minor role." It merely states that he was set to become the show's "breakout character."

According to the second source presented within the article, a breakout character is defined as follows:

"'The Fonzie' was a very popular character from the 1970s TV show 'Happy Days.' A 'breakout character' from a show is the character that becomes the most popular and talked about, and perhaps imitated."

According to the sources, the second definition appears to be the primary one. It's true that in some cases, a breakout character begins as a minor character, but that doesn't appear to be a necessity. Therefore, I think the opening definition needs to be removed, rewritten, or properly sourced. In the meantime, I'm returning Blair's entry in accordance with WP:V. Love to hear your input. Thank you very much for informing me of this. -- James26 (talk) 08:02, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alamanth[edit]

Based on his editing history I have unblocked Alamanth (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). The edits for which he was blocked were reasonable. Fred Talk 23:01, 25 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
