Invite

Hi Daniel Mietchen!

I noticed you were a member of WikiProject Education, and thought you might be interested in WikiProject Homeschooling. In this "WikiProject," we have been together working on the collaboration of Homeschooling-related articles. As a member, I really hope you can join, and let me know if you need any help signing up or with anything else. If you have any questions about the project you can ask at the project's talk page. Cheers! RC-0722 communicator/kills 23:21, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the invitation, but I prefer to stick to my core topics of science and sustainability. My educational focus is on the tertiary level. -- Mietchen (talk) 18:54, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Germany Invitation

Hello, Mietchen! I'd like to call your attention to the WikiProject Germany and the German-speaking Wikipedians' notice board. I hope their links, sub-projects and discussions are interesting and even helpful to you. If not, I hope that new ones will be.

Hi, i oppose the move, pls, see Talk:Transparency_(research)#move_opposed, so we can discuss the matter there. thanks. Mion (talk) 19:54, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Mion wants to move this article back to its original name, then split out parts of it into a new article called Transparency_(research). If you agree to do so, please leave a note on Talk:Transparency_(research)#move_opposed so that I or another admin will do the move. I instructed Mion on how to request the correction in that case. Orphaned non-free media (File:Logo_of_the_Open_Access_Scholarly_Publishers_Association_(OASPA).png)

Thanks for uploading File:Logo_of_the_Open_Access_Scholarly_Publishers_Association_(OASPA).png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 02:04, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I have moved the logo to en, so it can be deleted over at Commons now. -- Daniel Mietchen 02:30, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Added template for SuggestBot

Hi,

Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.

We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.

We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.

If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 22:04, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

PS: I noticed you archive SuggestBot's posts to a sub-page, so I added the template there, so the bot will post new suggestions there instead. Hope that's not a problem! DS.

Thanks! ---- Daniel Mietchen 02:39, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:16, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

Wikiproject Open Access

Your proposal for Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Open Access is great and I appreciate the work you put into the Wikimedian in Residence on Open Science position. I want to set up the Wikiproject Open Access page. Have you or anyone else done any work preparing a draft for this? I do not want to duplicate work, but am happy to do all the setup.

Also please help me define a scope. I just made this navbox - Template:Open navbox - because I was interested in organizing all articles about the concept of "openness". Can you tell me what you think is the overarching term which describes every kind of open topic? For example, is "open access" the top-level descriptor for all other terms, such as "open science", "open source", "open communication" and the rest?

How would you feel about this Wikiproject being about improving all articles on the topic of "openness", and not just science or journal-related articles? I have a list of such articles here; in your vision, would they all be included in this wikiproject to be formed?

Thank you for your attention and I hope we can work together. After this is set up I think that I can recruit others to join. Blue Rasberry (talk) 06:53, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi Lane,
thanks for dropping in so productively!. It is indeed not simple to put "all things open" into a hierarchy or to define an overarching term. Transparency (behavior) may be worth a look in this regard, though. As for the title and scope of the WikiProject, I am open to both options - "keeping" it under "Open Access" (and thus limited in scope) or starting something under a broader heading (on Twitter, I use "Open X").
As for navboxes, I have so far primarily used {{Academic publishing}} (which could do with a more open illustration than File:Scientific journals.jpg) but having this complemented by {{Open navbox}} is certainly a good idea. I also maintain a list of OA-related topics that probably merit articles on the English Wikipedia, I have started an open access userbox that could be used for recruiting further participants, and I am looking for ways to get community engagement with Open Access File of the Day. Currently under consideration are a DYK for Research Works Act and a Wikipedia ad for the Wikiproject OA and/ or the Open Access File of the Day. Any help with that would be appreciated.
Looking forward to fruitful collaboration!

Open access file of the day

I saw that you put the OAFD on WikiProject Open Access. How will this work? Is there any template that we can use to make this file and its description change automatically every day? If it did that, then I think a lot of people would put such a template on their userpage and look at it every day. Have you heard of such a thing? It seems like you just manually inserted today's picture, right? Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:14, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

It's manual for the moment. I am looking into template systems in use at commons:Commons:Picture of the Day, at WP:DYK and similar but didn't yet have the time to set something up for OAFD. It would be good if you could take a regular look at OAFD and make some nominations or recommendations. The criteria for selection have to be defined too - so far, I was the only participant, so it didn't matter, but getting a wider involvement is certainly desirable. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 19:28, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
I can help with this, but I have a lot to do just now. I setup the project but I am in the middle of a lot of other work just now, and I really need to focus on other things. Give me a couple of weeks and let me meet with some of my friends here and talk about all this. I also want to get other people involved and I already meet with local people about these things. If you have other ideas or other problems, please present them on the project page. If you put problems out then at least there is some chance of someone accepting them; if there are no problems posted then there is no chance of someone taking the task. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:44, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
No worries, and thanks for the help so far, especially the article assessment. I am eyeing Feb 14 for the official launch of OAFD - that's the 10th anniversary of the Budapest Open Access Initiative going public. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 21:35, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

OAFD

Hey, I split the open access file of the day to its own template: {{Open access file of the day}}. You can edit that page each day to change the image, instead of directly editing the pages which include it, which will make for cleaner edit histories. It'll also make it easier to add the image to other pages, like user pages, if desired. i look forward to working together on this "open" stuff! – Pnm (talk) 02:10, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

I checked it out and it is cooler than the past system. I put the template on my userpage so now I will see it often. Blue Rasberry (talk) 04:51, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Daniel, glad to hear that. Also, you might want to know about other some upcoming MediaWiki & Wikimedia developers' events, where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, extending functionality with JavaScript, the new Lua templating system, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing. For example, there's a hackathon in Berlin scheduled for 1-3 June. Best wishes! Sumanah (talk) 13:26, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Why do you keep adding {{WikiProject Open Access}} to Talk:Paedophryne amauensis? The article has nothing to do with open access. Yes, the species was announced in an open access journal, but that's merely a citation and open access isn't even mentioned in the article. You can't go adding {{WikiProject Open Access}} to each and every article which cites an open access source. Modest Genius talk 11:27, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback. As things stand (and we are just finding our way), WikiProject Open Access has two aims - one is the WikiProject-typical one of improving coverage of the core area and related topics, the second is, as stated on the template, "improving other articles with the help of materials from Open Access sources", which is rather unusual for a WikiProject. In any case, using such templates is one way of tagging articles to keep track of them. I agree that it may not be the most suitable option for tracking articles under the second aim but it's the only one we have explored systematically so far for this WikiProject (though mainly for articles under the first aim).
We haven't yet defined what the boundaries are for inclusion of articles under the second aim in the WikiProject. We certainly do not plan to "go adding {{WikiProject Open Access}} to each and every article which cites an open access source", but lemmata that have originated in an Open Access publication would seem like a good first guess. Other options would be articles that use a large number of files or large amounts of text from Open Access sources.
Yes, Open Access is not mentioned in the article but in contrast to many other articles started about new species, Paedophryne amauensis uses the original paper for more than a mere citation - it displays images taken or derived from figures in the paper, and there may even be text passages that have been imported or closely paraphrased, all of which would not be possible if the journal would not be (Libre) Open Access. It is this kind of reuse that WikiProject Open Access aims to encourage (e.g. by uploading the files to Commons when such articles are being started), and suggestions for a better way of signaling and tracking that are most welcome. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 13:41, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
That sounds like a very broad remit for a wikiproject. Even if the article does include information from the OA article, that's no more a reason to include it in a wikiproject than text from the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britanica, or any other public domain source, would. The image description page has information on the source of the image, there's no need for something on the article talk page too. Perhaps this is an argument for using something like Category:Articles incorporating material from an open access publication? Modest Genius talk 14:58, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
For text, we experimentally have Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating text from open access publications - we'll see where that goes. Not sure yet what is the best option for images - Special:GlobalUsage is not ideal, nor is GLAMorous. I actually made a request last night for a tool that "gives me a list of pages on a given wiki, ranked by the number of times files from a Commons category are being used therein", and I just added one for a related tool that "lists pages on a given wiki that recently had files from a Commons category (or subcategory) added or removed." There is also the possibility of moving the second aim to a companion WikiProject on Commons. In any case, the purpose of tracking file usage goes beyond the mere collection of stats and clearly includes the stimulation of editing in areas where those files are being used or could be. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 16:07, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
Well, have fun and good luck. I just don't think you should be tagging the talk pages of articles with no obvious relation to open access, that's all. That category seems a much better solution to me; other opinions may differ of course. Modest Genius talk 20:43, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback - it is much appreciated in this time when much is still in flow. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 22:07, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Stub tagging

Hi, I saw that you added a number of stub templates to articles on academic and scientific journals. I didn't check all of them, but at least some of them were rated as "start class" and a stub template is therefore inappropriate. Also, there are many different stubs for journals (see Category:Academic journal stubs; that cat actually also says that articles should not be placed into it directly, but rather into appropriate subcats) and in general it is better to use a more specific template than "journal stub". Just a heads up. Happy editing! --Guillaume2303 (talk) 08:44, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I don't normally do stub tagging and will take a closer look before I do it next time. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 09:45, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Another useful paper

Hi Daniel, how are you?

I believe this paper and its videos could be useful on Wikipedia. For the time being I've just cropped its leading result for display on the main page of the Hebrew Wikipedia. Have a good day, ליאור • Lior (talk) 09:16, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Thank you, Lior - a fascinating paper! -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 10:02, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
I uploaded the videos and noticed that rapid inversion does not exist yet. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 13:14, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
Thank you Daniel! The main page now features the gecko's lateral video, at least until other headlines take its place. Of course I wasn't aware of rapid inversion until this very morning. ליאור • Lior (talk) 13:24, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Signpost and WikiProject Fungi

A collaboration with the MSA sounds like a great idea. I can definitely get the project an entry in next week's news sidebar as well as the weeks before and after your talk. We're currently working on a special series of interviews with sports projects which will take up all of July and most of August, so the earliest I can get WikiProject Fungi scheduled for a full-blown interview will be late August to early September. -Mabeenot (talk) 02:14, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. Please let me know if I can help. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 05:15, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

Daniel, in order to finish off the review—I'm assuming you meant to formally approve it—you need to add an approval icon. If it isn't approved, then use one of the other icons to indicate where you think the review is. In order for the software to pick up what the review status is (which it does through the icons), please be sure to put your icon (and explanation) below the red arrow icon I inserted. Many thanks, and good job on the hook rephrasing! BlueMoonset (talk) 13:57, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Done. Thanks for the reminder. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 14:59, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

GLAM-WIKI 2012

Hi Daniel,

You registered your interest for GLAM-WIKI 2012 a while ago - this is to let you know that registration, and the call for papers, are now open. Hope to see you there! Andrew Gray (talk) 22:31, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I definitely plan on submitting something. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 22:40, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Great! My next task is to track down the people who suggested topics for papers and ask them to submit something more detailed, so you're one step ahead of me ;-) Andrew Gray (talk) 22:50, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

PeerJ

I have approved your nomination of PeerJ for DYK here. Would you not like to include yourself as joint creator of the article? Cwmhiraeth (talk) 08:30, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

OK, thanks, done. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 11:07, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Request for peer review, biophysics bio

I put the Fred Richards article up for peer review but have gotten no takers so far - I'm hoping maybe you'd be willing to give it assessment as an experienced wikipedian who can help the fledgling WikiProject Biophysics figure out what really counts as GA or above in our field. As a possible inducement, Fred had a history as an influential early advocate of open access for coordinates (and even of data) from protein crystallography. Any help you can manage will be very greatly appreciated! - Dcrjsr (talk) 23:21, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jane, thanks for the pointer. Had a brief look and liked what I saw. Will try to dive deeper soon - please nag me if not. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 00:45, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
