Feels good to finish the job! - Dank (push to talk) 01:44, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
Am thinking your catering to a different audience to the orders articles (who presumably are mostly botanists?, towards a more general gardenering and flower arranging audience. I dunno, but your doing something right, and expanding my taste for sure. My hope is that your work on these FLs will push them higher in the google search rank, and open thinks up for people like me (and my mam and aunts) who just like to scroll, admire and learn a thing or two). Ceoil (talk) 01:57, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
If you're all enjoying them, I must be doing something right. Thanks for your help reviewing ... more credit should go to the reviewers. - Dank (push to talk) 01:08, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
Its been an eye opening pleasure. Ceoil (talk) 08:11, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

TFL notification

Hi, Dank. I'm just posting to let you know that List of Saxifragales, Vitales and Zygophyllales families – a list that you have been heavily involved with – has been chosen to appear on the Main Page as Today's featured list for July 24. The TFL blurb can be seen here. If you have any thoughts on the selection, please post them on my talk page or at TFL talk. Regards, Giants2008 (Talk) 18:30, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

Thanks much. Any of the family lists should be fine now. - Dank (push to talk) 19:27, 8 July 2023 (UTC)

Request for FLC help

Hey Dank! Congratulations on returning as a TFA coordinator! I was ecstatic to hear about it. If you're not too occupied at the moment, I wanted to request your help with my current discography FLC. I fully understand if you do not have the time.--NØ 01:35, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Sure thing, I'll get to it in a few days. - Dank (push to talk) 02:39, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Draft, Bill Carmody

Hi! I see you are a member of WikiProject Law. I am seeking feedback on a draft I created about trial attorney Bill Carmody, of Susman Godfrey, who has been profiled in the press several times because of the size and prominence of his cases. I have explained more here: User talk:Backyard116/sandbox/Bill Carmody/Seeking feedback. He’s a personal connection of mine, so impartial advice on notability and neutral point of view would be greatly appreciated. Backyard116 (talk) 15:34, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

I had forgotten that I was a member, I'll go remove my name. I don't think I can help with legal articles. I see you've made a post at WT:LAW, that should work. - Dank (push to talk) 15:44, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

What is this for?

There is already a TFA blurb for the article, that ran on the front page when it was TFA back in 2017. What's the purpose of this new one, on an archive page? For one thing, the first sentence of it is not accurate, as the topic includes rolling, which many organisms use. —swpbT • beyond • mutual 13:52, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi Swpb, thanks for writing that high-quality article on a quirky but important topic. Sure, I'll go look at that sentence and see if I can fix the problem. I'm following standard procedure here, I think. The scheduling coord (in this case, Wehwalt) posted their initial suggestions for September at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/September 2023, and he's suggesting that we should rerun this article. (If that's a problem, either post on that page or talk with him.) Then the coords all volunteer to write new blurbs and look at old blurbs, and we post new blurbs and rewrites to the talk page of the FAC for each article, as I did here. Standards change over time ... the 2017 blurb was fine then, but ... this is just my guess ... I think we might run into problems if we don't make at least a few edits to it this time around. The first sentence in particular needed some help. - Dank (push to talk) 14:43, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
That's interesting, no one had bothered mentioning to me that the article may be rerun. What, specifically, was wrong with the original blurb? Has there been, e.g., a shift toward shorter blurbs in the last six years? —swpbT • beyond • mutual 14:58, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
Well, first, I'm completely sympathetic when people push back against the idea of reruns. If it seems like a bad idea for this to run in 2023, for any reason, then go talk with Wehwalt and explain why ... he's always knowledgeable about these things and happy to reconsider. The 2017 RfC that set up the rerunning guidelines is at the top of this page, and that language has been at the top of the requests page ever since then. On the question of blurb standards, give me a couple of days, please. - Dank (push to talk) 15:09, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
No, I'm perfectly happy to have the article rerun, this was just a strange way to find out about it. There's more than a month to come to a consensus on the blurb, so I'm not worried about it, just looking to better understand the various changes you've made. —swpbT • beyond • mutual 15:15, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
Sure. I've asked someone for help with a couple of things, and I'm waiting to see if they're willing to help me out here. If not, I'll try to explain it myself. - Dank (push to talk) 15:28, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
I like those edits you just made that deleted some stuff ... although the first link in the blurb has to be a bolded link to the article, and the blurb is now at 869 characters; we generally shoot for 925 to 1025. Pangolins and tumbleweeds are mentioned in the article as rolling organisms ... that's one way we could expand the blurb. - Dank (push to talk) 15:35, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
Ok, let me think about how to put the bold link first, while keeping the thrust of the sentence on wheel-like motion. —swpbT • beyond • mutual 15:41, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
Okay, User:Dying is interested and "may" (quoting) do some copyediting later on ... typically (for them), that means roughly 10 days before the article hits the Main Page. I'll keep the blurb watchlisted and weigh in after they edit it. IMO the blurb is in better shape now after your edits and mine, so I'm happy. - Dank (push to talk) 12:02, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
Sounds good, thanks for the heads up and for your work on the blurb. I'm happy with it now too. —swpbT • beyond • mutual 15:09, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

Walt Disney TFA

Will you be making the blurb? LittleJerry (talk) 23:55, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

Sure, I can do that. There are options with this one, for instance:
Walt Disney (1901–1966) was an American animator, film producer and entrepreneur. A pioneer of the American animation industry, he holds the individual records for the most Academy Awards earned (22) and the most nominations (59). On October 16, 1923, he founded the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio with his brother Roy. He achieved his first major success with the creation of Mickey Mouse and the introduction of sound cartoons. As the studio grew, he expanded into feature-length cartoons such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio, Fantasia (both 1940), Dumbo (1941), and Bambi (1942) and eventually made live action films like Mary Poppins (1964). He opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California, in 1955, and began work on another theme park, Disney World, in 1965. Disney was shy and self-deprecating in private but adopted a warm and outgoing public persona. He is widely acknowledged as a national cultural icon. (Full article...)
1022 characters. Is there anything you'd like to include or exclude?
- Dank (push to talk) 12:14, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
No Mickey Mouse? LittleJerry (talk) 22:02, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
We're at 1022 characters, what should I take out to make room? - Dank (push to talk) 22:16, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
Made changes. LittleJerry (talk) 22:38, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

[my version:] Walt Disney (1901–1966) was an American animator, film producer and entrepreneur. A pioneer of the American animation industry, he holds the individual records for the most Academy Awards earned (22) and the most nominations (59). On October 16, 1923, he founded the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio with his brother Roy. As the studio grew, he introduced synchronized sound, full-color three-strip Technicolor, feature-length cartoons and technical developments in cameras, seen in features such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio, Fantasia (both 1940), Dumbo (1941), and Bambi (1942). Cinderella (1950), Sleeping Beauty (1959) and the live-action film Mary Poppins (1964) were also commercially and critically successful. He opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California, in 1955, and began work on another theme park, Disney World, in 1965. Disney was shy and self-deprecating in private but adopted a warm and outgoing public persona. He is widely acknowledged as a national cultural icon.

SchroCat, you nominated the page at FAC ... do you have a preference for either of these versions (or for something else)? - Dank (push to talk) 00:01, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

You have to mention Mickey. He's his most famous character and way more important than mentioning Technicolor, cameras or Sleeping Beauty. The two are synonymous. LittleJerry (talk) 03:06, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

I'd split the difference and go with the following. It includes MM, but also the technical developments, which are actually more important than just the one character, given the impact they've had on film making in general:

Walt Disney (1901–1966) was an American animator, film producer and entrepreneur. A pioneer of the American animation industry, he holds the individual records for the most Academy Awards earned (22) and the most nominations (59). On October 16, 1923, he founded the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio with his brother Roy. This comes out to 955 characters, so works OK on length. Let me know your thoughts. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 09:13, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

(ps. When it ran as [Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 5, 2016 TFA in December 2016], it didn't mention the mouse, and I don't recall seeing any comments or complaints about it's absence. - SchroCat (talk) 09:17, 13 August 2023 (UTC))
I don't mind this one. LittleJerry (talk) 11:44, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
Works for me too (although I'll probably break up one long sentence). Thx. - Dank (push to talk) 14:14, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

Generative AI and Wikipedia research

Hi Dank,

My name is Dr. Tim Koskie and I am a researcher at the Centre for Media Transition (CMT) at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). We are conducting a study on the implications of content-generating AI systems such as ChatGPT for knowledge integrity on Wikipedia, and are approaching you because you have participated in discussions on this topic on Wikimedia pages.

If you are interested, we would like to invite you to participate in our study. It would involve joining either a focus group discussion or an interview (around 1 hour), in person at Wikimania in Singapore if you are going to be there, or online at a future date. At these sessions we would ask you questions about how you think generative AI will impact Wikipedia, as well as about the kinds of work you do on Wikipedia.

The project is funded by the Wikimedia Research Fund grant programme. You can find out more about the project here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Implications_of_ChatGPT_for_knowledge_integrity_on_Wikipedia If you are interested, let me know and I will forward you some more detailed information on the project. Just saying hello!

Hi, Dan, just dropping by to say hello. This year has been an active one for me. Not on Wikipedia, obviously, but in real life. I had thoughts of doing some Symphyotrichum article updates or expansions for the genus or a species or two before aster season began, but that's over in most of the Americas now. If I get back to them sometime soon, I could try to do more on the Central and South American ones because they will continue to bloom. Had any DYKs, GAs, or FAs you've worked on and feel proud of this year? – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 04:25, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Elizabeth, good to hear from you, and I'm delighted you're feeling better. Featured lists are the best vehicles for doing what I want to do; they're all on my user page. I got re-elected this year as a TFA coordinator; I'm working on January at the moment. - Dank (push to talk) 04:32, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
That's great! I am sure you are very good at that. I spent a lot of time outside in the sun and warmth doing some flower gardening. Fall and winter are harder times, and now I'm back to a lot more pain. But it will pass. Not the pain, but the intensity of it. A good time to hibernate. Keep in touch! – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 04:57, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Ugh, sorry to hear that. - Dank (push to talk) 04:59, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, but not unexpected. What was unexpected was the wonderful spring and summer. In general, it has been an exceptional year with only a few blips. I hope you are doing okay and had a good Thanksgiving. Please keep in touch. – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 05:12, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
