Mike Garcia (talk · contributions) This user constantly vandalizes the "Judas Priest" article, deleting relevant and accurate information, while adding irrelevant and inaccurate facts, as well as slang and inappropriate language. Please try to reason with this obnoxious and irrational individual.

At first I also didn't understand how Garcia's name didn't show up. Then I understood that he each time just reverts it to his original version.

What I saw as vandalism was his insisting to use the semi-slang word "hugely" instead of "immensely", as well as deleting essential information, adding inaccurate facts and forcusing on the least important facts. He did this about 12 times since 4/20/05. Please compare the current version with his.

Some concerns, questions and suggestions for WP

Hi Danny,

I don't exactly know if this is the appropriate place to do this, but since you have more experience and authority here, I guess you'll be able to channel this to the right place.

First I have encountered a merely technical, though improtant issue; there seems to be some problem or confusion in how capitalization is processed by WP. If you type in an entry consisting of more than one word(s), and it is not capitalized exactly as it appears in the existing article, it sends you to the "create this and this article" page or "not found" (search) page. This extremely frequant with album titles. I suggest to make the browser window case-unsensitive. I also believe that it would be beneficial to capitalize all words (even "of", "the" etc.) in titles of articles, even if gramatically incorrect, especially considering the fact that in most cases partial capitalization is anyway incorrect. (eg. "Sad Wings Of Destiny" vs. "Sad Wings of Destiny" are both incorrect, but only the latter will direct you to the desired page.

1. The wiki image syntax for the picture is broken, so "right" appeas as the tooltip. In my usual meddling way I was going to "fix" it but I can't for obvious reasons :-)

Gangnihessou - translation of the week

Hi. I have translated the Gangnihessou article in Romanian. And that gave me an idea, after looking at how great it looked to have so many interlanguage links for an article that not many people know about! How about, each week, we have an article that is translated from en: in as many languages as possible - the article should be a relatively obscure one or one that isn't that well-known, in order to promote greater interlinguality. Anyway...many people want to move forward with the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Fact_and_Reference_Check project instead of waiting for 'smart' footnotes to be coded into MediaWiki. The first step is agreeing upon a formatting template used to fact check new articles. Several candidates are up for vote, and everyone is encouraged to vote and/or submit their own proposal. Comments on proposals are also very much welcome.

Recent occurances

Hi Danny,

You have recently claimed that you often argue on my behalf. You have also claimed that you blocked me on meta with an expiry period of 24 hours. You have also claimed that "people" were talking about me and that I was very close to being banned by these "people". You have also claimed that you are a strong supporter of linguistic pluralism in the Wikimedia foundation.

However, I have found all of these to be false, with a little investigation.

Apparently, you have in the past said many a bad thing about me and there are others who I would not expect who stand up for me much more than do you.

Your block of me on Meta will not expire until after 00.00 on the 9th - this is longer than 24 hours since you blocked me.

It has also become apparent that while there are a few people who are in favour of banning me, most people seem to think it is too severe a punishment and in fact most seem to be more against it than you do.

As is readily apparent from your recent discussions with numerous Wikipedians, you are clearly not for absolute linguistic plurality. In fact, Anthere, Jimbo, Elian, and even in some respects Angela appear to be more for linguistic plurality than do you, by a long shot.

You have recently claimed that I have been acting histronically, however, a detailed review of your actions and then my actions has revealed that you are the one who has been acting histrionically.

For example:

In the past 3 days, how many posts have I made to all MLs combined? What sorts of actions have I taken regarding recent linguistic issues on Wikipedia? How have I dealt with the conflict between you and I? It is beginning to appear to me like you're Jim Carrey in that movie Cable Guy, being all wacko and then trying to make everybody think that I'm wacko.

It also appears that many people have condemned your recent actions, and many people believe moreso than do I that you are not a nice person, just a couple of examples being one person saying you are a "prick", and another person saying you are extremely condescending.

If you should wish to discuss any of this with me, I will remind you that I attempted to initiate dialogue yesterday, but you declined giving the reason that you were busy (but apparently not busy enough to be chatting in #wikimedia, as well as exchanging PMs with various other Wikipedians).

hey there danny, i'm really quite excited to get this up and running. i am defineately prepared to spend a lot of time working on it as i beleive it will prove to be a very valuable resource for learning. unfortunately my 'wikiskills' arent that great, what i'm trying to do is bring, for example, the image of venus on the wikipedia article over to the category of venus for the solar system module, it just does not seem to work. can you help? oh and i'd like to transfer and simplify tables as well. --Larsie 17:39, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Ivory Coast - I hadnt noticed the French name. I remember a long time ago getting jeered for proposing that we use the originating local-language phoneticisation in place of Anglicized names... You may have been under the impression that the disparaging of subpages applies outside the article namespace; to the contrary, users' archives belong as subpages in their own respective talk namespaces, not e.g. in the talk namespace of User:Danny Archive, whose username would be a bit confusing but still perfectly acceptable. I took the liberty of doing the moves rather than making the fuss of describing them either precisely or confusingly.

Now that i've gotten my talk page down from 70-some kB to below 30, i'm in the position to urge you to get yours down from 108 to below 30. (Have you been archiving without dropping the corresponding sections from here?)

Arbitration election dates and timing

Since nobody else has stepped forward, it looks like we will take you up on your offer to administer the Arbitration Committee election again. First of all, my very inadequate thanks to you for doing that, not only this time but previously. Adjusting the dates as you mentioned, so that the election starts and ends on the weekend, should not be a problem. To get the rest of the process firmed up, I also wanted to ask when you want the list of candidates finalized. If we start the election on December 4 (at 0:00 UTC or would something else be better?), can we allow new candidates to declare up until the last 24 hours, or should we use an earlier cutoff? --Michael Snow 21:05, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

I was looking at the U.S. city/state articles and noticed that you've made a number of changes. I've chosen to multi-license all of the rambot contributions under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike Licence. I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license your all your contributions (or at minimum those on the geographic articles) so that we can keep most of the articles available under the multi-license. Many users use the {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}} template on their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. If you only prefer using the GFDL, I understand, but I thought I'd at least ask, just in case. -- Ram-Man 18:02, Nov 17, 2004 (UTC)

You mentioned on my talk page that you'd be willing to multi-license some of your changes (the ones I noticed were made months ago to a few city articles). It's actually really simple. Here are a couple examples of what you would have to add somewhere on your user page (User:Danny):

Option 1

I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:

OR

Option 2

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain (which many people don't like to do), you could replace {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}} with {{MultiLicensePD}}

To be fair, the process does allow your contributions to be more accessible, but if someone accepts your changes under an alternative license but not the GFDL, any changes they make could not be folded back into Wikipedia. Statistics question

Danny, are you aware of a source that allows one to determine how many active editors are currently working on Wikipedia? Say within the last week, the last month, and the last six months?

Some users are throwing around claims that imply that they know the sentiment of the average editor, and I would like to be better informed as to how many editors there really are, actively making contributions to articles.

I am really surprised the developers of the Wiki software didn't see fit to build a polling mechanism into the client front end, because given the number of editors I think there may be, the error in almost every poll I've seen must be huge (as to how representative it is of the actual opinions of the editors out there).

If this is not your area of expertise, I would be indebted to you if you would pass this query along to the proper individual whom you think would best be able to provide some answers.

Per a recommendation by Theresa Knott, I will cross post this message to Elian and UninvitedCompany, in the hopes that one of you will know the answer.

Unfortunately, the project has been hampered by admins from the start. One called it a "socially acceptable back-door way of promoting anti-Americanism" designed to "minimize the significance of the 9/11 attacks". This is the kind of insularity it was up against. Others refused to allow templates on the article pages linking to the project. Each week has seen less and less contributions. Anonymous emails were sent to me deriding it's aims. Now, it is almost moribund. It would make sense to give it up and admit that Wikipedia will always be nothing more than an encyclopaedia mainly for Babylon 5 fans. - Xed 23:05, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Arbitration Committee election

Dear Arbitration Committee election organizer:

Fred Bauder has likened me to Holocaust deniers on the Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2004/Candidate statements/Endorsements page (by adding this link on top of his original statements [1]). [2] I am a professional historian; and most of my family was murdered in Nazi death camps. So I find this statement intolerable. I will no longer contribute to Wikipedia if this slander is allowed to stand, given that it is coming from someone with the stature in the community of a member of the Arbitration Committee.

Good idea!

Hi Danny. Thanks for sharing the idea of looking for uncapitalized adjectives of ethnic groups and languages in the 'fix common mistakes' project. I ran a search for such words this afternoon and I estimate there's thousands of such errors in the article space. That's a lot more than I expected. Hi, I'm having a problem with the automated voting software, as it keeps telling me I cannot vote, since my first editing with User:M7it is not three months old. Artificial Consciousness

Hi! I contacted Cimon Avaro, and explained it to him at [3] From his reply at [4] it seems that he agrees to mediate, otherwise I agree with any mediator who Angela recommended. In the only comment at [5] in response to my request for comment, one says that "I've never heard the term "artifical consciousness" used before", so this seems to be causing misunderstanding. They read it, and some even edit it, as Artificial Intelligence article, and don't find it to be a good Artificial Intelligence article, though it was never intended to be such. Artificial consciousness is a general term, which incorporates many similar interpretations, for example Digital Sentience article was previously merged into it. It is a separate field in science (qv a special edition of Journal of Consciousness Studies dedicated to Machine Consciousness at [6]). I started the artificial consciousness article more than a year ago, after a short article under that heading, created under psychology, was deleted for no content (it merely stated that no such system has been made yet). I came across the Artificial consciousness article a couple of weeks ago after searching for articles on strong AI. The strong AI heading was a stub but the Artificial consciousness heading was full of strong AI content. It was clear to me that the Artificial consciousness article was mis-classified so I posted an item about its neutrality in the discussion section and suggested that it be moved to strong AI. I later transferred it to strong AI where it looked quite good see: Article under strong AI. The only change I made was to use MS Word to change all occurrences of Artificial consciousness to strong AI and to leave behind the test and tin-men links.

Having moved the article I then wrote a new, briefer text for Artificial consciousness, keeping some of the original such as tests and tin-men links. See: New article for Artificial consciousness

It is evident from the discussion at Artificial consciousness that I am not the first to have spotted that the previous article was incorrectly classified. We now have a problem because any discussion of the classification issue is likely to descend into a potentially endless debate on Turing machines, AI, consciousness etc. whereas the issue is simply one of classification, as user Slim pointed out when he/she responded to the Request for Comment. I have a suggestion, we can see from the last week of work by Tkorrovi that a lot of his contribution is now being made at strong AI. Given this, would he consider re-instating the article that I contributed and adding to that? Re: your note

You posted a note on my talk page about my vote in the ArbCom election. You noticed that votes had been registered both by Cribcage and Cribnotes, and you stated that one had been canceled.

I've reviewed the election notices. Can you refer me to the section which states that multiple usernames cannot vote from the same IP, regardless of whether they otherwise qualify? Thank you.

Problem with the WP:CSD proposal

Since you have facilitated other important votes, I am hoping you can look into a problem with Wikipedia:Proposal to expand WP:CSD.

The original author (User:Blankfaze) and another admin (User:Neutrality) have reverted and protected it to prevent addition of a new proposal which both of them personally disagree with. These two have assumed a mantle of "ownership " of the proposal all along, but protecting the page to prevent inclusion of a proposal change is outside any bounds. The page should certainly be unprotected, and the new proposal added. I had posted earlier about adding it on the talk page, and no objections were indicated. If this issue persists, then the vote should certainly be postponed. According to Wikipedia:Survey guidelines, "Consensus must be reached about the nature of the survey before it starts." Hi Danny, Thanks for your note on my talk page re: mediation with user:Jewbacca. I don't have any dispute with him, to my knowledge, except for some odd messages sent to my account after I criticized a VfD he'd sponsored. I didn't find them theatening, or even personally-directed, but did find them irksome enough to lose my temper. I saw this mediation request as being about my having lost my temper -- a means of stirring up a conflict. My position is that there isn't a conflict: I'm not gravely offended, don't believe I said anything worthy of extended offense, and have no wish or intention to communicate with this user, or others involved, again. There are certainly other more productive things to do here, and my own projects include an article just voted to feature article status. Thanks again, and I appreciate your attention. I also did an infobox for Nepal in a subpage using the new template; Mav swapped back the table when the template parameters changed and broke it. Discovery Channel Pompeii images

Hi, Danny. User:CryptoDerk tells me that you spoke with the Discovery Channel to get permission to use their Pompeii photos in the 'pedia. Could you clarify this at the image description pages at the Commons? The pages just say "Copyrighted, free for any use." without any mention that they were obtained with permission or from whom. Also, did the film creators really say "any use" (i.e., other people could copy the images ad infinitum?).

I'm Wally, and I'm representing El_C in the dispute between he and Sam Spade. We were both pleased to hear you'd accepted mediation duties on this issue.

I think all parties concerned are anxious that this be dealt with in a fair manner first and foremost and an amicable one next to that. Sam has repeatedly expressed his wish that this dispute not go to arbitration, and El_C echoes this, although we do feel that certain improper and uncivil behavior on Sam's part need to be addressed.

Mediation Request?

Hi Danny,

I'm writing regarding the proposed mediation between El_C and Sam Spade for which there was a request you act as an officiator. This was around two weeks ago, and I've heard nothing further about it since. Are you still able to act as mediator? I and El_C, whom I represent, are both very anxious that this go forward. Please contact me as soon as is practicable if you have any questions, and I would very much like to organize a time and date for you, El_C, Sam and myself to meet and begin work on this process.

EB2004 indexing

You put section breaks into Wikipedia:2004 Encyclopedia topics/1 (I fixed a missing =). I can see that's useful for a more efficient edit, but each time we cut out a bunch of blue links, the number of items in the section becomes less than 100, so it's less useful as a guide, and breaking up the list makes it harder to calculate % done. If we have divisions, would it be more logical to put them at every 100th item of the original list, so that we can get some idea of progress are we hack away? Indexing the list as it stands today seems a little arbitrary.

Come to think, is the extra efficiency worth while? Page 1 currently is about 22K.

Similar comment on the start you made on annotating Wikipedia:2004 Encyclopedia topics. Shouldn't we use the original list of items? For example, section 1 originally started with 12-Tone Music. It seems more logical - any objections if I make the change? David Brooks 05:35, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I read your explanation (User talk:DavidBrooks); division is a good thing. My point was that dividing it into 100's based on the list as it stood on Mar 18 seems a little... arbitrary. Censorship policy in Hebrew Wikipedia

I was wandering in he.WP and got to our "miznon"(where people debate policies http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/ויקיפדיה:מזנון) And I saw a debate about censoring few article that some wiki memeber translated from english wikipedia (the articles were about few porn-star actresses) at first they started that debate because they hated this guy.. and then decided to prohibit all articles about porn in wikipedia, because they say it's a display of disrespect... I tried to talk about it in the session they opened, but they even censored me! after 3 times of being censored and unable to continue the debate they did there, I turned to the "discussion" tab of this session and there tried to explain they shouldn't decide for others what to censor... they gave the same excuses and swaggered that they won't have any porno article there! (looking at the en.WP and fr.WP I saw that they don't censor this kind of stuff.. and again i remind that the person who wrote the articles translated them from en.WP)

I think it's outrageous that they took themselves the LIBERTY to limit other's LIBERTY by CENSORSHIP policy! (and this is all happening under the banner "The Free Encyclopedia").. Trying to explain them the meaning of an encyclopedia and even mentioning Denis Diderot didn't help... I debated it a bit in the irc channel of #wikipedia and #wikimedia and was told to approach you and you might help since you know hebrew and has the ability to maybe persuade them...

Please help me make he.WP free for all opinions and not ruled by SOME people that THINK they know what's GOOD/BAD and wish to ENFORCE their opinions on ALL of the others.

Armenian Genocide Mediation

Hi Danny,

In my role as an admin, I've been following the developments over the Armenian Genocide article. I've been asked to step in on several occasions and now things are getting way out of hand.

Coolcat and Fadix both accuse each other of POV editing and as a result the page was reverted numerous times, and the talk page was left with a grand total of 11 archives of discussion.

An anon posted an order on Fadix's user page to have his edits checked by Coolcat, but requests to developers (User:Jamesday) to check whether this IP is Coolcat or some other disputant impersonating him, have given me no results as of yet. Coolcat has denied it was him, and as he seems to know IPs can be tracked, I'm leaning towards thinking he's telling the truth.

It looks like both parties are willing to mediate, but Jwrosenzweig (preferred mediator of User:Fadix) seems to be absent. I know RFM is currently not fully functional, but would you be willing to sort out this mess, or at least get an other mediator to look at it. I'm afraid RfC or arbitration would be detrimental to the already tense atmosphere between the disputants. -- Mgm|^(talk) 08:46, Mar 23, 2005 (UTC)

Ah, hello. I'd come to believe you were incommunicado.

The Mike Garcia situation is as follows: two users, an anon and MrHate, have come to the AMA regarding the pages for Ned's Atomic Dustbin and the System of a Down Hypnotize/Mesmerize controversy, respectively. In each page, Mike Garcia is specifically noted as reverting others' changes more often than is acceptable and making rude comments (including threatening a revert war: see Talk:Ned's Atomic Dustbin). I've referred them both to you and Guanaco, as you two have authority with this user that is better utilized than the normal channels, with the hope that it can be settled outside the dispute resolution process. However, if the AMA receives anymore complaints, an injunction will be necessary against this behavior.

On an unrelated note, have you received my messages regarding the El_C/Sam Spade dispute? Are you still available to mediate for this? Thanks in advance. Wally 00:47, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well, if the situation for one of two is resolved, please let that user know to withdraw their request for assistance — all too often, users post asking for help, solve the issue themselves and then forget to tell us that!

Biweekly special article

Dear Fact and Reference Check member,

After many months, the biweekly special article has been brought back! The article we will be referencing is Titan (moon). Please do your best to help out!

I'm asking all members to verify at least three facts in the article, and I'd really appreciate it if you could try and help with this. We have about 19 members, so if even 3/4 of us try and fulfil this 'dream', that'll be 45 references!

If you need some information on how to use footnotes, take a look at Wikipedia:Footnote3, which has a method of autonumbering footnotes. Unfortunately, they produce brackets around the footnotes, but it seems to be our best alternative until they integrate the footnote feature request code into MediaWiki. You may be interested in voting for the aforementioned feature request.

Several "lists of things Wikipedia hasn't got"

We have Wikipedia:2004 Encyclopedia topics, Wikipedia:1911 Encyclopedia topics and Wikipedia:List of encyclopedia topics (generated from various sources). I think the lists should be kept separate. When checking for redirects, I know the sources of each list, and this makes it easier to eliminate articles. Please do not merge them! Danny 20:28, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Ok, good that I checked first :). What I actually had in mind was to create a merged list but equipped with three columns of tick boxes to indicate whether the title came from 1911, 2004 or Magnus' list. The idea is that if the same name appears on several lists it will have several ticks and stick out as a particularly important topic for us to cover. The ticks will mean that you will still be able to refer to the correct source, and so your life will not get any more difficult. What do you think? Pcb21| Pete 08:02, 29 Mar 2005 (UTC)
