Doreen Allen

[edit]

Thanks for your message. I am intrigued by this and am interested in looking into it further. I wrote the Wikipedia article on Doreen Allen; I find it hard to imagine two suffragettes operating under the same assumed name.

I have found a Dorothy Mary Arnott born in Littlehampton in 1890. Do you have any other details to help such as her married name?

Hello Jack. Thanks for your interest in this. I’ve received the following from my friend (Sandy Blair). “I've culled the following from notes made by my cousins John ( now dead) and Allan ( now over 90)

Dorothy Arnott born in 1890's, youngest of 7 children. Her eldest sister Grace worked for Mrs Pankhurst. Her other two sisters emigrated to Canada then moved to USA where they trained as nurses and served in France in WWI.

Dorothy left home at 15 and joined the Suffagette movement and apparently changed her name to Doreen Allen to save her family from embarrassment when sent to prison. She served three terms.

Following the outbreak of WWI she was one of the Suffragette factions that agreed to support the war effort . initially as a nursing auxillary and then as an early member of the Womens Auxillary Army corps was one of the first Women NCO's. By the War's end she was The Clothing Controller and in 1919 she was awarded the MBE Military Division, in her assumed name.

She subsequently married Dr Henry " Bruce " Blair and lived as the wife of a country Doctor in Cornwall bringing up three children. With the outbreak of WWII she was commissioned into ATS and commanded Anti Aircraft Batteries in Plymouth and Bristol.

Her grandaughter has some momentoes of her time in Prison and the grant of MBE

I hope these facts give some useful clues for further research.” ... and so do I. I’m going to do some digging in ancestry.co.uk

Regards
