This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in the Arab–Israeli conflict. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Note especially the 30/500 rule: editors who have been registerd less than 30 days, or have less than 500 edits should not edit in IP (=Israel/Palestine) area, cheers, Huldra (talk) 21:33, 18 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Eight Gifts of Hanukkah moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Eight Gifts of Hanukkah, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Hello and thank you for your time and effort! I'm still a beginner when it comes to editing, I'm happy to learn. For the technical stuff (like movie title and actors' details) I put in the IMDb link in the 'External links' section. For the plot, a friend sent me these movies and I had watched and summarized the plot myself, which seems to be sufficient on other movie pages? The plot part is often a summary rather than based on an online source. I've seen stubs on Wikipedia with less information, so I'm honestly a little confused on why this wasn't enough? Very much looking forward to your answer. Thank you again! Darren.enlight (talk) 10:22, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

December 2021

Information icon Before adding a category to an article, as you did to Call Me by Your Name (film), please make sure that the subject of the article really belongs in the category that you specified according to Wikipedia's categorization guidelines. The category being added must already exist, and must be supported by the article's verifiable content. Categories may be removed if they are deemed incorrect for the subject matter. Thank you. DonIago (talk) 03:44, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thank you for this message. I am honestly confused and would like to understand, in what way did the category not match the film? All of the main characters in CMBYN are Jewish, but more than that, being Jewish is brought up, referenced, is made visually present on screen (the repeated emphasis on the Star of David necklaces) and is a part of the connection within the main romance of the film. Why wouldn't CMBYN be classified as a Jewish film? Thank you, I appreciate your time and effort. Darren.enlight (talk) 10:05, 18 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
See Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2012 May 11#Category:Jewish films. – Athaenara 19:08, 19 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Athaenara! Thank you so much for the link. I wasn't an editor on Wikipedia in 2012, I wasn't aware of this. Where can I make my contribution to this debate? Because I feel like what appears in the link you kindly shared with me is insufficient. The way Jewish films are currently categorized on Wikipedia is in a lot of sub-categories that don't converge, when there should be a bigger category for all of the films that cover different aspects of the Jewish experience. I have found Jewish films under the category you mentioned, but also under 'films about LGBT and Judaism' and under 'Hanukkah films' and under 'films about antisemitism' and under 'Holocaust films'. Also, if there are Jewish film festivals, there are logically Jewish films. There really should be a category like that on Wikipedia IMO and I would love to get the chance to present this POV. If an educator, for example, wants to find films they can present to a class about the experience of being Jewish, they should be able to draw from all of the categories mentioned above and to be able to find them easily, without hopping between categories or going on a hunt to find all the different categories that make up the many diverse angles of what's tied into Jewish identity and experience. Thank you so much in advance! Darren.enlight (talk) 23:14, 21 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Darren.enlight: I wasn't involved in that, either, it came up when I clicked "what links here" that day for the category. Now it brings up Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2021 December 20#Category:Jewish films too. – Athaenara 23:21, 21 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Pistol mention

[edit]

Thanks for adding a reference, but that article is behind a paywall for me. Can you please provide a direct quotation that verifies the pistol claim? I read elsewhere that the hostage taker had a rifle but have not been able to find a reference to a pistol. I am not trying to say that he didn't have a pistol, but sometimes weapons are misidentified by sources. Cullen328 (talk) 07:44, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cullen328 and thank you for the kind words, I'm happy to help! The article describes the scene right before the moment when the forces breached the synagogue, saying that the hostages ran out "followed by a man with a pistol who ducked back inside." I've also seen this footage myself (I think on MSNBC), so I'm sure this isn't the only source confirming that the perpetrator was clearly not using a rifle, it's just the one most readily available to me. Darren.enlight (talk) 09:51, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't sure where in the article as it's worded now this direct quote can go. I just noticed that the footage I referenced is mentioned elsewhere in the article, so maybe the direct quote about the pistol can go there, what do you think? Darren.enlight (talk) 10:12, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A lengthy welcome

[edit]

Hi Darren.enlight. Welcome to Wikipedia. I hope you don't mind if I share some of my thoughts on starting out as a new editor on Wikipedia: If I could get editors in your situation to follow just one piece of advice, it would be this: Learn Wikipedia by working only on non-contentious topics until you have a feel for the normal editing process and the policies that usually come up when editing casually. You'll find editing to be fun, easy, and rewarding. The rare disputes are resolved quickly and easily in collaboration.

Working on biographical information about living persons is far more difficult. Wikipedia's Biographies of living persons policy requires strict adherence to multiple content policies, and applies to all information about living persons including talk pages.

If you have a relationship with the topics you want to edit, then you will need to review Wikipedia's Conflict of interest policy, which may require you to disclose your relationship and restrict your editing depending upon how you are affiliated with the subject matter. Regardless, editing in a manner that promotes an entity or viewpoint over others can appear to be detrimental to the purpose of Wikipedia and the neutrality required in articles.

Some topic areas within Wikipedia have special editing restrictions that apply to all editors. It's best to avoid these topics until you are extremely familiar with all relevant policies and guidelines.

If you work from reliable, independent sources, you shouldn't go far wrong. WP:RSP and WP:RSN are helpful in determining if a source is reliable.

If you find yourself in a disagreement with another editor, it's best to discuss the matter on the relevant talk page.

I hope you find some useful information in all this, and welcome again. --Hipal (talk) 20:10, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Hipal and thank you! Is this in reference to something in particular? Darren.enlight (talk) 22:33, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, [1]. Ethnicelebs.com not a reliable source. --Hipal (talk) 00:41, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, ok, Hipal! Got you, thank you! I was just looking at WP:RSP, it's extremely helpful! And I'll be going over all of the resources you've provided, thanks again! Darren.enlight (talk) 01:15, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Whoopi Goldberg into another page. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. KyleJoantalk 00:54, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, KyleJoan, and thank you! As I contributed a big chunk of it and also changed things in both entries as I was copying, I'm really not sure what is attributable to whom, nor how do I discover the answer to that? So I would really appreciate any help, if you could help me figure it out! Thank you in advance! Darren.enlight (talk) 03:28, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No problem at all! My understanding is that it is sufficient to reference and link the article containing the original text when copying within Wikipedia since that article's history already includes all of the users who contributed to the copied text. Hope this helps! KyleJoantalk 04:09, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
KyleJoan, it does, thank you so much! Darren.enlight (talk) 20:24, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ARBPIA articles

[edit]

Hi Darren. I am happy to discuss issues on the talk pages of Vanessa and The Palestinian. We may be able to work out some of the conflict issues that have arisen.
