Welcome to the Military history WikiProject!

[edit]

Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Starting some new articles? Our article structure guidelines outline some things to include.
  • Interested in working on a more complete article? The military history peer review and collaboration departments would welcome your help!
  • Interested in a particular area of military history? We have a number of task forces that focus on specific nations or periods.
  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every military history article in Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask one of the project coordinators, or any experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! Kirill Lokshin 15:10, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings from "the Bantu"...

[edit]

Yo. Aren't you embarrassed by that fact that the oldest comment on the current version of your talk page is 2 weeks shy of a year old? I would archive it if I were you. So, what work are you doing? Like to tell me something about that new Mantatisi vessel I saw mentioned on the news a few months ago? I could tell you a few interesting facts about the woman it's named after. I think we should just ignore that Fucksgeist troll; he and Jvb shouldn't have such strong opinions on matters they know 0 about. Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 18:23, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

She's the reason why I prefere "Difaqane" over "Mfecane", since most of it was Batlokwa attacking other Sesotho speaking clans. She attacked Bamokoteli, headed by Moshoeshoe, causing them to move from Thaba Nchu to Thaba Bosiu. Of course, along the way his grandfather's group was attacked and eaten by cannibals... His clan later grew to become Basotho with the fortress of Thaba Bosiu giving them protection. Yes, Mmanthatisi would be more correct, but there's a tendency to not pronounce the syllabic m. Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 18:25, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When Letsie was in his late teens approaching the age when he undergo initiation, there was a growing concern that his initiation could not happen without dealing with the stigma of his great grandfather's death. Everyone agreed that the cannibals should be captured and killed. Years passed and by chance they were captured with their leader and brought to Moshoeshoe. You won't believe what happened next... Sure you wanna know?

Here's the unbelievable truth: According to Peter Becker's Hill of Destiny, Moshoeshoe silenced those who wanted them killed and said that since these people's stomachs were the graves of those they had eaten, killing them would be desecrating their graves - disturbing their shadows even further. He then ordered his ngaka (inyanga) to prepare a potion for grave rites. Meanwhile, he ordered the cannibals to lie on their backs in a line with their stomachs exposed.

When his ngaka returned he told him to smear the potion on their stomachs and perform the necessary rituals. After this, he told them to stand up, gave them several heads of cattle, and bid them farewell. This is similar to what happened after the failed invasion attempt by Mzilikazi on Thaba Bosiu: As amaNdebele were running away from the never-ending hail of rocks and boulders, Moshoeshoe ordered several of his men to run after them with several head of cattle as a gift.

AmaNgwane, who had basically besieged Thaba Bosiu, were not so lucky. Although Shaka really didn't care about the Sesotho speaking clans in the interior Moshoeshoe decided to err on the side of caution. He would regularly send him cattle as a gift. One day amaNgwane attacked the boys who were sending cattle to Shaka. He threatened to attack Thaba Bosiu. Moshoeshoe explained they were under siege from amaNgwane, camped along the Caledon - you can imagine what Shaka did to them... Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 20:57, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cape Town FAC

[edit]

Well, it's done. I listed Cape Town as a featured article candidate. Take a look on its FAC page and have a vote. Thanks! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 06:15, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More books about Moshoeshoe?

[edit]

Not really. Most other texts I've read about him had bad mistakes, like his Wikipedia article Moshoeshoe I saying his father's name was Mokhachane (pregnant woman) or another history book I browsed through which said it was his father who was attacked by cannibals. Hill of Destiny is written in a very non-patronising way with assistance from story tellers and Moshoeshoe's descendents - so it doesn't tell the same old lies and misconceptions. Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 08:40, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Out of print? Just my luck - I tend to casually take out a book from a library, enjoy it, them find out 3 years later that it was a classic and it's more difficult to get my hands on it again. So, why do you love politics so much? A good source of mirth when you're bored? Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 17:06, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Could you perhaps do a little favour for me? Take a look at my user page; does it look wrong to you too? I think they may have been a change in the software. Could you fix it for me? Simply put newlines after each section header (currently there's just a single space, which used to work before). Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 17:26, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it's fixed. Thanks. I guess it was just a change in Google's XHTML translator. Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 19:35, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You ran out of time in one of those 5 Rand per hour internet cafes!? And I thought I was poor! Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 10:47, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, of course! These Capetonian Wikipedians are lucky I don't have the internet - their attitude is starting to piss me off. See my comment on the talk page for History of South Africa under Apartheid (can't remember the exact title). Zyxoas (talk to me - I'll listen) 17:54, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Apartheid redirect

[edit]

Hi lmpi -- yes, I know it's in arbitration. I've gone ahead and requested a page protect, though I don't even know if they can page protect redirects. I've stated my thoughts on the topic here, and just posted a long thought to one of your fellow South African buffs here, which you might want to read. I mean, I understand why South Africans want ownership of this word; but I really feel insisting apartheid has only one meaning is like closing the barn door after the horse has escaped. Anyway, I had no idea what I waded into when I thought I was fixing this link; I hope the arbiters figure this all out soon. Kendrick7 23:44, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please feel free to evaluate the Libya article which has become a 'Featured Article Candidate' and write you support or opposition on Wikipedia:Featured article candidates. African militaries

[edit]

Whoops Thanks for the heads-up. Fixing. -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 21:28, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually... Military of Africa could be or redirect to Military of the African Union. -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 02:50, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Options Well, even though there is no "military of Africa" per se there are also no "foreign relations of Africa" or "politics of Africa" or "transport in Africa" except as an aggregate of the foreign relations of individual African states, or the policies regarding transportation in individual states, etc. "Military of Africa" could just as easily be about militarization on the African continent in addition to the Military of the AU (who already has peace-keepers), or simply a list to individual states' pages (cf. the transportation example above.) -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 14:25, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Koevoet

[edit]

Keep your eye on the Koevoet page, it seems to also have become a target of a fairly non-NPOV seeking to introduce too much political (slightly biased) content into an article essentially about a military unit. --Deon Steyn 06:24, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seems it's the same editor responsible for most of the bias, I have just cleaned up the page for Craig Williamson to. --Deon Steyn 07:31, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Banes

[edit]

Hi Impi. I'm afraid I'm not really sure of the actually final reasons of why Banes left. I know he was becoming more and more busy, and he didn't have as much access to a computer as he would like. He did say that it wasn't anything serious or any bitter feelings that made him leave, which is good. He also wanted me to make it known that his departure is not his taking a stand against the cabal or anything like that. I guess that sometimes, people just have to move on for awhile :(

Hope this answers your question, and if I can be of anymore help, then just tell me :)

Yours, Thε Halo Θ 15:26, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
