Think about this![edit]

Hey, DatGuy,

Have you ever considered an RfA? I know it's quite brutal, but I think you are suitably experienced and I'd love to see you as a sysop. I'd be honoured to nominate you. ProgrammingGeek (Page!Talk!Contribs!) 20:39, 4 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@ProgrammingGeek: Geez, I don't think so. Not yet at least. RfA is extremely brutal. A user who passed RfA told me once that it is even quite depressing. There's a make-up criteria for most users, and I believe I won't pass. I might try it when I have 6 more months or so under my belt, but I don't believe I should. If I will want to try it, I will definitely go to the RfA poll first. Thanks for the offer though :). Dat GuyTalkContribs 20:58, 4 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

CVUA[edit]

Hi, I was wondering if I could sign up for CVUA training under you? I have dealt with a few instances of vandalism in the past, and I would like to learn how to go at that more. At the moment I haven't really been doing much with that, as I created an article two days ago, but I would like it if you could help me develop counter-vandalism skills. I will be looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you. Woodstop45 (talk) 16:38, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Woodstop45: Hello! I'm glad that you'd like to learn how to counter vandalism, however I'm going on a vacation for 3 days. I will set up a page when I return. Meanwhile, if you'd like to apply to any other trainers, just tell me :-). Dat GuyTalkContribs 08:51, 31 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Historical and Literary Society[edit]

Hello there. I have been editing a new article, Historical and Literary Society, based on a version on Polish Wiki. I stopped yesterday for lack of time. I worked on it some more this morning only to find when I tried to save it, that it had been orphaned. Why? I have a sick dependent in hospital so much less time as a result. Can you please help to un-orphan it? Regards, --Po Kadzieli (talk) 12:09, 5 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Po Kadzieli: Huh? Did you read what the tag said? No other articles link to the article you edited. It suggests to introduce links for it. Dat GuyTalkContribs 12:17, 5 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

AWB[edit]

Hi DatGuy. Please don't make edits such as [1] and [2] using AWB. The AWB rules of use specifically prohibit making inconsequential edits with the tool. Thanks. Omni Flames (talk) 11:08, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Omni Flames: Those edits were perfectly fine. In the second edit, you should always bold the title of the article in the lead section (which is what I did). For the first edit, it's a similar case to what is on the AWB talk page. Dat GuyTalkContribs 11:12, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think you misunderstand me. There's nothing wrong with the edits themselves, and if they hadn't been made with AWB I would've ignored them. However, the problem is that they're insignificant. Whether they're compliant with policy or not doesn't matter, they have little effect on the actual page. Omni Flames (talk) 11:15, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Omni Flames: Isn't that the point of AWB? To make fixes such as typos, cleanup, MOS fixes, and so-forth? Apologies if this seems mean, however I'm trying to reach consensus while being a bit bold. Dat GuyTalkContribs 11:21, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that is the purpose of AWB, however any edit which has very little effect on the rendered page which you're editing is probably too insignificant to make with AWB. See Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser#Rules_of_use, specifically point #4. Don't get me wrong, I also use AWB, and I appreciate what you're doing, I just think you should make very minor edits manually instead. Omni Flames (talk) 11:30, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Omni Flames: Alright, I'll try that ;). Dat GuyTalkContribs 11:34, 8 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fancy being a WikiSleuth beta tester?[edit]

Okay, so I've been working on a little pet project for a while which is starting to take shape - WikiSleuth. Currently only one tool is enabled (PrimeSuspect), and even then I've turned most of its features off, so currently it acts very much like a semi-live Recent Changes.. I'd really appreciate some comments on basic things at the moment (design, wording etc) before I dive into enabling the sentiment analyzing, editor reputation considering sentient back-end -- samtar talk or stalk 20:46, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Samtar: Sure! So does it work like Huggle? If the editor has received multiple 'thanks,' has lots of edits, etc. then he probably won't pop-up, and if he was reverted multiple times or has a warning, he will be a 'prime suspect?' Also, I knew I would agree when I saw that introduction image! For the design, it seems a bit boring but that could be understood as it was just created. Don't forget that on the /WikiSleuth introduction page, it says "Made with <3 by [[User:Samtar]]" (remove the extra [[ as it already links to it ;)) Finally, when are you starting to work alongside MusikAnimal for WMF! Dat GuyTalkContribs 20:59, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

See I knew there was a reason I asked you ;) I'll remove bots from what it looks at. Yes, it will work a lot of Huggle in that respect (when I finally get that working!). Design is my lowest priority right now, but yeah it's boring and I'll fix that. It's also not overly mobile-friendly. The [[ ]] are actually there by design decision, but I can remove them if they look silly? And finally, before I head off to bed, I recently interviewed for the WMF and passed the first interview and got to the technical test, but didn't progress further :( I'll keep you updated, but you can also read the devlog -- samtar talk or stalk 21:19, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If I'd like to create a user warning template, how should I do it? Should I include it in Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace/Multi-level templates? Dat GuyTalkContribs 12:57, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

John Glashan[edit]

Er . . . I'm sure that this edit of yours was well-intended, but the drivel that you resuscitated had been rightly deleted. Consider just its start: In 1889 Glashan Public School (Ottawa, Ontario) was named after the painter/writer in honour of his great work. Decades before the person in question was even born. And it gets worse from there.

Here are the other edits by the IP who added the drivel. An IP very rightly removed this crap. (No edit summary, but was an edit summary really necessary?) Ah, then look what I dream of horses then did.... Hoary (talk) 01:37, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I make them too, I dream of horses. No hard feelings. That said, however, recently I have noticed a pattern: (1) somebody adds infantile material to an article; (2) IP deletes this, with no edit summary; (3) established editor [almost-] automatically reinstates it. This is of course a pity in itself, but I suspect that it could be worse than this: that at least some of these anonymous, taciturn crap-removers are dabbling their toes in editing for the first time and potentially are creative as well as restorative editors. (Of course this kind of criticism is easy for me to make, as a glance at my edit history will show that for every one of my own garbage removals, another editor may be making dozens of restorations, the great majority of which are of restoration-worthy material.) -- Hoary (talk) 05:00, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: Thanks for noticing. It would've really helped if the IP editor gave an edit summary (not trying to say I didn't make a mistake, I did), therefore I gave him a notification about edit summary on his talk page. Cheers, Dat GuyTalkContribs 06:49, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

DatGuy vs Datguy[edit]

I am pretty inactive on Wikipedia, but I noticed today that it allowed you to create DatGuy even though I've had the Datguy account since 2014 (pay no attention to the fact that I never created my user page). What's more troubling is when I logged in today I had two alerts that look like they were meant for you (mentions in other people's talk pages). Is it common for Wikipedia to confuse users this way? Datguy (talk) 16:30, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Datguy: Really? What were the notifications? And hello, brother. Dat GuyTalkContribs 16:32, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@DatGuy: Greetings, DatGuy! I looked further, and it appears it was user error - in both cases they pinged me in their first edit then corrected it in the next edit:
So it looks like there's no problem, other than possible confusion. It's not a new problem though; I have an old post on my (neglected) blog about various Datguys on the internet... Datguy (talk) 17:16, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Datguy:: You added a header that read: This article is an orphan, as no other articles link to it. Please introduce links to this page from related articles; try the Find link tool for suggestions. (August 2016).

But this is not an orphan article. there are dozens of links within the article. I am not sure what you are missing but I made sure there were ample links introduced. Sociology is linked. Several grant institutions are linked as well as non profits. And several categories of sociological study are linked. I reverted your edit, ok? Before we go back and forth, I wanted to reach out on your talk page. Thanks for your cooperation! --sheridanford (talk) 20:31, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@SheridanFord: The template states 'as no other articles link to it'. That is different than a deadend tag, which says that you should introduce links from this article to other articles. Also, you re-added the template with this edit. Dat GuyTalkContribs 20:36, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request on 15:59:59, 20 August 2016 for assistance on AfC submission by Cheveners[edit]

Cheveners (talk) 15:59, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hullo DatGuy,

Sincerest apologies for disturbing you!

Through this entry 'Cheveners' I wish to share with the Wikipedia users about the word 'Cheveners'. In old England, it was a trade-craft. People who used to embroider on hosiery or lace were called as Cheveners.

I did submit a lot of significant references. I really want to learn from you why is the article 'Cheveners' as an entry in encyclopedia isn't acceptable in the present way.

I do recognise that I am making mistakes. But a little hand-holding in the initial stage will be really helpful and much appreciated.

But there is a modern meaning, as recent as couple of decades, but caught up only in the past couple of years. Chevening is a programme like Fulbright. The awardees are called Cheveners. I have given only one citation of a British government website. Many more could be given. Many modern Cheveners, around the world, are serving parliamentarians, leading authors, heads of state etc. So, the word has a clear significance.

Later, I will update more information and citations of the old usage.

I am reproducing the details of my entry after my name.

I look forward to help.

With every good wish, Cheveners

There are scores of informal groups of Chevening scholars, fellows, and alumni on various social media like LinkedIn, facebook, etc.

In many countries there are more than one formal groups registered with various country-specific government registering/regulating authorities, eg., Registrar of Societies, Registrar of Trusts, Registrar of Companies etc. Such formal groups are generally territory (country) or theme (eg environment) oriented only.

Cheveners UNITED is the informal, inclusive, independent, and complimentary confederation of positive minded Chevening scholars, fellows, alumni, and our groupings. We embroider synchronisation, integration, and leveraging of our individual & united energies. We better the world. We do this via, inter-alia, strengthening relationships with the UK and advancement of mutual social, professional, and personal lives.

The group first debuted on WhatsApp, as a group of Chevening alumnni from India, on 16th January 2016. Within a short period of time, it emerged as the largest and the most communicative group of Chevening alumni on any mobile chat application in the world, with a typical chat history of about 100 pages a month.

As a response to increasing number of requests from Cheveners outside of India, especially from China and Africa, it soon adopted a global outlook. While the WhatsApp group continues to be for India, Cheveners UNITED started new country specific groups, on other mobile chat apps like WeChat for China & Hong Kong SAR, and another one for Russia, and the republics of the Former Soviet Union.

While the mobile chat app presence of Cheveners UNITED is country / region specific, all other presence on other social media is for Chevening alumni from the world over.

Edit to page "Hiberno-English" 2016-08-26[edit]

You undid an small edit I made on the page "Hiberno-English" as it was "not constructive" and marked it as a test/vandalism. The edit was not a test, a vandalism, or an experiment. A sentence in Dialect was marked as requiring clarification, so I placed a standard English version of the sentence beside it to provide that clarification. If you feel that was not the clarification being sought, what do you think the clarification should be? Otherwise what do you feel was inappropriate about my edit so that I can avoid mistakes in future? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seonaxus (talkcontribs) 23:03, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
