High Beam[edit]

Heya, I was stalking User:Vibhijain's pages the other day and came across some High Beam thing. I read something about "editors will have to have a 1 year-old account and 1000 edits in order to qualify for one. " You put this up on several users talk pages, [not mine], and I want to know how to go for it. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:37, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Rsrikanth05, I'm sorry I missed yours. If you ever need to apply just follow the instructions at Wikipedia:HighBeam/Applications. Thanks, Dipankan says.. ("Be bold and edit!") 10:44, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So I just need to fill it up? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:46, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what you need to do. Just sign your name. Dipankan says.. ("Be bold and edit!") 10:47, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

HighBeam Research promotion[edit]

Hi! Thanks so much for signing up to assist with the HighBeam Research project. The first step in getting this project started is widespread promotion of the account sign-up opportunity. Anywhere and anyone you can tell will help make sure that no editors miss out. We're keeping track of where the project has been promoted on the promotion page. If you notify people, please add {{done}} after an entry on the promotion page with a [link] to where you did so. Here's a sample text you might use:

  • HighBeam Research--an online, pay-for-use search engine for newspapers, magazines, academic journals, newswires, trade magazines and encyclopedias has agreed to give free, full-access, 1-year accounts for up to 1000 Wikipedia editors to use. HighBeam has access to over 80 million articles from 6,500 publications, most of which are not available for free elsewhere on the internet. Aside from a free 7-day trial (credit card required), access to HighBeam would cost $30 per month or $200 per year for the first year and $300 for subsequent years, so this is a wonderful, free, no-strings-attached opportunity. To qualify, editors must have at least a 1 year-old account with 1000 edits. Please add your name to the WP:HighBeam/Applications account sign-up page if you are interested.

Please let me know if you have any questions, thoughts, comments, concerns, ideas, or otherwise. Awesome to have your help! Ocaasi t | c 17:42, 17 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Raabta (Kuch to hai) for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Raabta (Kuch to hai) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Raabta (Kuch to hai) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Night of the Big Wind talk 00:50, 21 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User script listings cleanup project[edit]

I'm leaving this message for all recent contributors to Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts.

This scripts listing page is in dire need of cleanup. To facilitate this, I've created a new draft listing at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts cleanup. You're invited to list scripts you know to be currently working and relevant. Eventually this draft page can replace the current scripts listing.

If you'd like to comment or collaborate on this proposal, see the discussion I started here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject User scripts#Scripts listing cleanup project. Thanks! Equazcion (talk) 00:19, 25 Mar 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Have you contacted the significant contributors of Charles Dickens? ("Nominators who are not significant contributors to the article should consult regular editors of the article prior to a nomination")

On the different note, the popping head on the left is quite scary !!! ;) --Redtigerxyz Talk 06:16, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How kind of you! Thanks.... I'm well and fine :-) Dipankan says.. ("Be bold and edit!") 15:29, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, I liked the barnstar immensely. Also I enjoy Mr Wales peeping from the left lower corner of computer screen while I type in your talk page :)
I am also fine. I never met you before in wikipedia. So where are you in Hooghly? I am from originally from Barasat in North 24 parganas.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:39, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's ok. I have not attended any Kolkata meet ups; I barely missed the one in January. I attended one meetup way back in 2006 here. Do you attend the meetups?--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:46, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of recent edits[edit]

Hi, it's pointless amending the page Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of recent edits/Data for two reasons: (i) it's not supposed to be manually updated - there is a special program to do the job; and (ii) it's massively out of date. There is a better list at WP:MOSTEDITS which is updated automatically, normally every week. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:41, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted[edit]

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 14:36, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I'm busy at the moment. I can't be attending Berlin at the time. Thanks, however for the invitation. Dipankan says.. ("Be bold and edit!") 13:20, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to the April Wikification Drive[edit]

A big NPT update[edit]

Hey! Big update on what the developers have been working on, and what is coming up:

coding

  • Fixes for the "moved pages do not show up in Special:NewPages" and "pages created from redirects do not show up in Special:NewPages" bugs have been completed and signed off on. Unfortunately we won't be able to integrate them into the existing version, but they will be worked into the Page Triage interface.
  • Coding has been completed on three elements; the API for displaying metadata about the article in the "list view", the ability to keep the "patrol" button visible if you edit an article before patrolling it, and the automatic removal of deleted pages from the queue. All three are awaiting testing but otherwise complete.

All other elements are either undergoing research, or about to have development started. I appreciate this sounds like we've not got through much work, and truthfully we're a bit disappointed with it as well; we thought we'd be going at a faster pace :(. Unfortunately there seems to be some 24-72 hour bug sweeping the San Francisco office at the moment, and at one time or another we've had several devs out of it. It's kind of messed with workflow.

Stuff to look at

We've got a pair of new mockups to comment on that deal with the filtering mechanism; this is a slightly updated mockup of the list view, and this is what the filtering tab is going to look like. All thoughts, comments and suggestions welcome on the NPT talkpage :). I'd also like to thank the people who came to our last two office hours sessions; the logs will be shortly available here.

I've also just heard that the first functional prototype for enwiki will be deployed mid-April! Really, really stoked to see this happening :). We're finding out if we can stick something up a bit sooner on prototype.wiki or something.

I appreciate there may be questions or suggestions where I've said "I'll find out and get back to you" and then, uh. not ;p. I sincerely apologise for that: things have been a bit hectic at this end over the last few weeks. But if you've got anything I've missed, drop me a line and I'll deal with it! Further questions or issues to the usual address. Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 17:17, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Applications for free, full access, 1-year accounts from HighBeam Research officially open[edit]

The applications for 1000 free accounts is now officially open until April 9th. I have the account codes in my email box and we are ready to go. This week's main goal is promotion. Several editors have already done a great job of getting the word out, but there is still time to make sure people don't miss out on the opportunity. Please tell your Wikipedia friends, WikiProjects, non-English Wikipedias, and anywhere else you think people would benefit from knowing. You can record your progress at WP:HighBeam/Promotion where we're keeping track of all of the notifications. Thanks so much for your help! I'll keep you posted. Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 20:46, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Harry Potter final moment.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria. If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the file can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{non-free fair use in|article name that the file is used in}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the file. If the file has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Orphaned non-free image File:Harry Potter final moment.png[edit]

⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Harry Potter final moment.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Armbrust, B.Ed. Let's talkabout my edits? 00:00, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hyderabad[edit]

Nominators who are not significant contributors to the article should consult regular editors of the article prior to a nomination. You failed to do so, and at present, the article is clearly nowhere near FA standard, especially in the comprehensiveness parameter. I would be pleased if you could extend your reasons for it. Have you taken a look at the peer review, for instance? There are many aspects still not satisfied, and analyzing an article is to be done before undertaking any such move indicating a jump of the gun. Please do not repeat it again. Thank you. Secret of success 12:49, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I agree you are being a little too bold. This is the second time that you have done this. Please read the FAC instructions carefully. Nominating an article is a big step and candidates are expected to satisfy all the FA criteria and nominators are expected to be the major contributors.
