Sources and original summaries for shows like Table for 12

Hello, DisneyRah. I see you were never "officially" welcomed to Wikipedia, so let me rectify that by greeting you here. Thanks for doing so much work to add to the articles on WP, and I hope you'll continue to find time (between your school responsibilities) to keep up your efforts here. Welcome!

However, the texts you add to the Table for 12 article appear to be copied from one of two sources: http://tlc.discovery.com/tv-schedules/series.html?paid=2.15911.56073.37907.x and http://tv.msn.com/tv/series-episodes/table-for-12/?ipp=40 I don't know where the MSN page is getting its info, but the TLC page is obviously meant to whet audiences' appetites to see the show (e.g., "Watch as oldest daughter, Meghan,...", lots of exclamation marks, etc.). So maybe the TLC source is more accurate (or, yeah, maybe not), but it's probably too prone to cheerleading.

In any case, the MSN page has © 2009 Microsoft at the bottom. Even the TLC page says Copyright © 2009 Discovery Communications, LLC. So it's not our (or your) text to use, and material here on WP has to be free for further publication. While you're on an Editing page (as I am now), there's a line immediately below the edit box that says, "Content that violates any copyrights will be deleted." Below the Save page button is some smaller print that says, "All text that you did not write yourself, except brief excerpts, must be available under terms consistent with Wikipedia's Terms of Use before you submit it." This lets me know we need to be careful about what we put up here. The MSN and TLC texts would not be "available".

Personally, I'd rather we didn't have the show descriptions up until after they'd aired than that we plagiarize somebody's work or get somebody to start legal action against WP/WMF. Since we are supposed to base our entries on reliable sources, it'd probably be ideal if you could find some reviewer who includes a plot summary when writing about each episode. Failing that, you could try writing your own summary after you personally watch the show. This method avoids the possibility of citation, so it's a bit naughty (IANAL), but it'd be better than appropriating the summaries wholesale. The last few that you added were verbatim texts, which is definitely a no-no. If I notice more of that I'll just brutally revert the edits. I hope you see why.

Another alternative, of course, is to simply rewrite in your own words what you find at those sources. This is what I tried to do in my recent reversions of your copied-in edits. My texts are duller, but they're not copied. You can then (and should!) still use the sources as references you cite for each episode. Then we've got two sources for our content, synthesized by an editor, with up-to-date material — everybody wins. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 13:45, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

DisneyRah, the above warning represents the third time you've been admonished for cutting and pasting copyright-protected material from a source without paraphrasing it. (First offense, Second offense) It seems that rather than heed these warnings, and learn how to properly present material from a source, your only apparent reaction has been to blank these warnings from your Talk Page ([1][2]). This is your final warning. The next time you violate Wikipedia's policies by cutting and pasting copyright-protected material from a source, you will be blocked from editing. Your first warning for copyright infringement (given by me) was here on July 30, 2009, for this edit, and your second warning (by Zagalejo) was here on November 6, 2009. I already provided both of these links in my last post on your Talk Page, which you blanked from your page.

The warning by JohnFromPinckney on November 29, 2009, therefore, was your third warning for copyright infringement, by as many editors. If you failed to carefully read the links that I provided for your previous infractions, then perhaps you might consider being more circumspect when others attempt to communicate with you, instead of just blanking such warnings from your Talk Page, as you've been doing, since removing such posts, particularly when viewed in light of the fact that you resumed committing the same violation after the first two, gives the appearance that you're attempting to hide your violations of Wikipedia rules of conduct, and intend to continue committing the same violation.

DisneyRah, given this edit, in which you cut and pasted Episode summaries from The History Channel's website here, and stated in your Edit Summary, "Figured I'd update the episode list since season 2 has started, & hoping someone will help me out in summarizing the summaries into different words as I don't watch the show very often." , it is clear that you have no intention of respecting copyright law, or Wikipedia's policies regarding copyright infringement. You do not cut and paste copyrighted material verbatim into an article, and then "figure" that someone else will paraphrase it for you. You paraphrase it yourself. If you're not willing to do this, then you need to reconsider whether you wish to continue editing here. This if your fourth copyright violation warning, having received a third and final one seven days ago. Despite your having blanked all previous warnings from your Talk Page, I have restored them here, as well as Diff links, so that others who may wish to review this can do so more transparently.
