Hi - I wanted to say that I appreciate your work editing Wikipedia, so I wanted to explain why I reverted your edit to "Cold War." I believe that in the phrase "when the USSR emerged as the first major communist power", that "power" is used as a noun meaning a powerful entity. It's like calling a sports team "a power in their league." So "emerged" is OK to express the meaning that this is when the USSR first became a "power".
