Welcome[edit]

Hi,

Welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions; however, please remember the essential rule of respecting copyrights. Edits to Wikipedia, such as your edit to the page No._14_Squadron_RAF, may not contain material from copyrighted sources unless used with permission. It is almost never okay to copy extensive text out of a book or website and paste it into a Wikipedia article with little or no alteration, though you can clearly and briefly quote copyrighted text in the right circumstances. Entries that do not comply with this legal rule must be removed. For more information on this, see:

If you still have questions, there is a new contributor's help page, or you can write {{helpme}} below this message along with a question and someone will be along to answer it shortly. You may also find the following pages useful for a general introduction to Wikipedia:

I hope you enjoy editing Wikipedia! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. Feel free to write a note on the bottom of my talk page if you want to get in touch with me. Again, welcome! Mechanical digger (talk) 12:50, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note on my talkpage. I prefer to try and keep conversations in one place so please reply here. Wikipedia cannot just accept text copied and pasted from another source, if you read the links about copyright you will understand why - it's effectively stealing the work of others. I can help you write a better article but first can you confirm that you understand why your edits were undone? Bigger digger (talk) 14:23, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. The reason and procedure is noted! The website and the text are in fact both owned by myself and the secretary/historian (both ex-members of the squadron) so although copyright permission is implicit I'll work out how to go the full distance and show it accredited as such. I wrote that I like to keep the conversation in one place! It's more relevant here as well because others can see what's going on with your association to the article. It might be worth you considering WP:Reliable sources (click and read) as well, I'm not sure how the article can be sourced when its based on the WP:Primary sources. If you need a few more pointers let me know (by replying here, and possibly pasting {{wb|DougieR14}} at the bottom of my talk page) and I'll have a quick check for you. Your addition to No. 14 Squadron RAF has been removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other websites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites or publications as a source of information, but not as a source of article content such as sentences or images. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Repeated copy pasting of text from http://www.14sqn-association.org.uk/14_Squadron_Association/History.html will result in you being banned from editing. By all means use the information but please rewrite it so that's in your own words
