Dunfermline High School[edit]

Hi, we appear to have clashed whilst both working on DHS. As far as I can see you made no major changes to the first part of the history (up to 1560), so I've added the bit I was working on. If you're not happy please get back to me here or on the page's talk page. egards, Martin of Sheffield (talk) 12:50, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Martin of Sheffield: Thanks. It look as if it wasn't so much of a clash, more of a case of two editors trying to update a tricky description using the same newly-identified sources. I have added a further source which I think will be of interest you. Drchriswilliams (talk) 13:15, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll look in more detail when I get home. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 14:24, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and use of oldid[edit]

More than anything, I'm dropping by to thank you for the copyright work. It's a lot of what I do (and so pervasive a problem). Partners in the work are everything. Please feel free to drop by my talk page anytime. As a side note, it's no big deal, but I thought you might want to know that I noticed when doing RevDeletion last week and now today that you're going one revision too new when using {{copyvio-revdel}}. The edit that removes the copyright infringement is not included in the revisions that needs to be hidden. So, for example, the one we just partnered on, Wikipedia talk:User access levels, you only needed to ask for RevDeletion of the single revision by Cheifshan. To see that that's all that was needed, I only revdeleted that single revision and yet, you'll see that by doing so, your edit that removed the infringement does not allow anyone to see the infringed text if they access that revision. Likewise, because it was a removal of text that has been hidden, looking at a diff from before the infringement, through your edit, also does not display the removed text. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:04, 15 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Fuhghettaboutit: I was starting to get a nagging doubt that my revdelete requests were ending up including one revision more than needed. Thanks for the feedback, the clear explanation and also for the offer of support. Drchriswilliams (talk) 17:26, 15 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Carronade page change[edit]

The page for the carronade claims that the science of aerodynamics had not started yet and that there was no method of accurately calculating the range of a cannon yet which is entirely false. Benjamin Robbins began studying the effects of air resistance on both subsonic and supersonic projectiles in the 1740s and came up with formulas to accurately calculate the range of cannon based on the shot's weight and charge. One of his works "A Proposal for Increasing the Strength of the British Navy" which recommended making lower-velocity guns with a wider bore directly influenced the development of the carronade. For an overview see "Muskets and Pendulums: Benjamin Robins, Leonhard Euler, and the Ballistics Revolution" by Brett Steele. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.99.79.91 (talk) 16:22, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for explaining the background behind the small passage of unsourced text that you were attempting to remove. I see that you have now got the hang of using the edit summary to summarise this reasoning. If you find the edit summary doesn't allow you enough space then you can leave a longer explanation on the article's talk page. Drchriswilliams (talk) 06:22, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:52, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion discussion about Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar[edit]

Hello, Drchriswilliams,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Also known as in the lead sentence is usually bolded[edit]

Hi Chris, Regarding your revert on Foundation doctor. Just wanted to give you a heads up that any synonyms in the lead sentence are bolded. See WP:LEAD, in particular MOS:BOLDSYN. This is especially true if there is a disambiguation page that links to the article. The disambiguation page that links here is House officer. Sorry if there was any confusion from my edit summary, I could have been more clear perhaps. If House officer is not a synonym of Foundation doctor, please let me know and I'll make the needed changes. ThanksDig Deeper (talk) 01:23, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Dig deeper: Apologies for reverting your edit and thanks for the feedback. Since the introduction of the FY grades, House officer has been a term commonly applied to these doctors, in the way that it was used for Junior House Officers before them. Drchriswilliams (talk) 01:44, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I'm on the disambiguation project and I'm just plugging away, tidying things up mainly on the disambig pages, but also to a small extent on the pages they link to. If you want to try something new, join us! Cheers!Dig Deeper (talk) 02:15, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

a wee(gie) dispute[edit]

Hi there, sorry to bother you. I have noticed a few pages I created are being targeted with unwarranted deletion tags and edits in the last day or so. Although I can't prove it (because they have an IP masker that changes it constantly) it is obvious the source is the disgruntled IP user on the Glasgow page whose edits regarding importance the term 'weegie' were politely refuted by editors including myself, Jellyman and yourself. A couple of malicious edits have been rolled back but it might happen again. Since you are aware of the issue, could you keep a wee eye on the pages in question? These (so far anyway) are Shawfield and William James Chrystal. You might want to keep an eye on IP user edits to pages you have edited recently, and if anything strange is seen I will help out too if I can. Not sure how a sulky multi-IP user can be tracked and kept happy but hopefully they will get bored and move on to something else.Crowsus (talk) 17:31, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Crowsus: Thanks for letting me know. I'll keep an eye out for any more of this going on. Drchriswilliams (talk) 18:37, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
